Shaun Rogers to be Released or Dealt... NT Fix?
Per ESPN:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/s...
The Lions have decided to trade or release Rogers, according to reports. Coach Rod Marinelli and team spokesman Bill Keenist have both said they expect all players under contract to return.
Rogers, who has served one four-game suspension for taking a banned dietary supplement and could face an eight-game suspension if he tests positive again, has three years left on his contract.
Rogers, who has been to two Pro Bowls, had a good start to the season and was named NFC defensive player of the week after returning a 66-yard interception for a touchdown and recording 2½ sacks in the Lions' 44-7 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 9. But in the six-game losing streak that followed, he disappeared.
"He was a good player for us for nine games," Marinelli said at the time. "But it's the endurance all the way through the season, that's what I'm looking for."

Here's what he has left on his current deal...
- $4,250,000, 2009: $5,250,000, 2010: $7,000,000
My biggest question about this move, is why Matt Millen would make this known this early, and subsequently kill his whatever trade value Shaun might have had left...
Anyways, Shaun is BIG. He needs to shed some pounds before next season, and you'd think anyone taking him at this point would make that abundantly clear upon his arrival... He's one of the best down linemen in football when he's motivated, but that's been the biggest question with him during his career. Can he stay focused and motivated enough throughout a season to maintain an elite level of play over the course of 16 games?
It might be a little risk, but Shaun is a better fit at NT than Jay Ratliff (who belongs outside at DE). and he's definately an upgrade over Jason Ferguson and Tank Johnson. Is this a guy you take a serious look at for the right price through trade? Do you wait and see if there's any other takers first, and let the Lions cut him before you make your move? Do you leave him alone all together? I like him alot, and know him personally so I may be a little biased, but I make a move for him if all it costs me is a 4th or 5th rounder... No way the Lions are getting a first day pick for the guy at this point.

If you know him personally...
Then I won't be as harsh as I was going to be.
Every game I watched with the Lions, I saw Rogers only playing half the snaps, having to be rested on the sideline at critical points. He wasn't near as dominant as he is made out to be, although 7 Forced Fumbles is nothing to shake a stick at. I think he would def excel in a system like ours where he rotates with another topline NT, but NOT for the money that he is making.

Conditioning & Work Ethic
If Shaun Rogers committed himself to getting and staying in shape -- from a conditioning standpoint -- there's no reason in the world that he couldn't be and stay a legitimate DT force in the NFL.
The problem is that even the marine sergeant type drill leader Marinelli can't get Rogers to improve his stamina.
Here's a link from the Detroit Free Press http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/a...
and an excerpt from that piece:
But in the six-game losing streak that eliminated the Lions from the playoffs, Rogers disappeared.
Marinelli gave Rogers a long leash last off-season because he was coming off knee and shoulder surgeries. The hope was that Rogers would be in the best physical shape possible so he could perform on Sundays. But Rogers, listed at 340 pounds, weighed at least 360 and didn’t sustain his level of play.
Rogers made an impact Dec. 23 against Kansas City, but that was after the Lions were already out of the race.
After a news conference Jan. 17, Marinelli said he expected every player under contract to report for the Lions’ off-season conditioning program, including Rogers. He acknowledged Rogers’ weight would be an issue.
"He was a good player for us for nine games," Marinelli said then. "But it’s the endurance all the way through the season, that’s what I’m looking for."
Now if an authoritarian style of coach can't get the big guy to up his endurance level, what makes anyone think that Wade Phillips' type of leadership will get Rogers to respond any differently?
Just my opinion, but I have a hard time pullin' for lazy people. I'd rather see someone bustin' it and givin' that 100% each and every chance that they get... trying to take their respective game to the next level.
Can we count on someone like Shaun Rogers?
If we judge him solely on his NFL history, I'd have to say "no."

Coaching Style...
Now if an authoritarian style of coach can't get the big guy to up his endurance level, what makes anyone think that Wade Phillips' type of leadership will get Rogers to respond any differently?
I think there are plenty of guys around the L that may or may not respond to that type of coaching/motivational efforts... Some guys just don't like being approached like that. There's a reason drill sergeants and screamers like Marinelli don't typically last long in sports anymore... It took Tom Coughlin making a promise to be more pleasant and enjoyable to save his job in NY, and look at how those guys responded this year?
Now, maybe Shaun does or doesn't respond to Wade, but to write him off based on not responding to an authoritarian type like Marinelli is a bit much... His work ethic issues are definitely a concern, but weren't we saying 'TO will chew Wade up and spit him out' last year when Wade was hired? Same thing about Leonard Davis last year when Jerry broke the bank on him? It's not out of the realm of possibility to think Shaun could/would turn it around in a new situation.

I couldn't have said it better. I appreciate player who don't have ALL the skill but give it their all but I have no respect for guys who don't put forth the effort. (example Pacman Jones)

our NT position is just fine
I disagree that Rodgers represents an upgrade over Fergy and Johnson because he's lazy and fat and has no work ethic whatsoever. Sure he's huge and talented when motivated, but when is the last time he's been motivated?
Phillips 3-4 defense requires the NT to be active and Rodgers simply is too lazy to fit that bill.
I say pass on this guy as Fergy and Tank will man that position just fine in 2008.

Tank is a 3 technique DT
T Johnson isn't really a NT. He did most of his damage during Nickel and Dime defence when the Cowboys go to a 4 man front. I still see a need for a backup NT.
I agree Fergy, when health, is a very good run-stuffing NT.
I would wait and see if Detroit cuts Rodgers. Then offer him a similar deal to what Hamlin got last year. Let him prove his commitment.
Otherwise, I'd like to see a mid-round draft pick spent on a NT.

damn...I can't send diaries..glad you did it 4 me
I am totally on board with us getting this guy to shore up our NT position... He would be a huge upgrade, and give us a dominant interior presense.
He is a premier inside pressure DT...This year, coming back from injuries overweight, and out of shape still put up 7 sacks, several pressures, 3 passes defensed, and an INT return for a TD.( That is more stats than Spears has produced in 4 years total).
I think we are in great position to deal with Detroit. They run a 4-3 defense, are in desperate need of a good LB ( Carpenter), could replace Rogers with a viable, reasonably priced vet like(Spears)....
I propose we offer Marcus Spears straight up for him, or add Carpenter and a 1st or 2nd to throw WR Roy Williams into the equation.
We could then put Ratliff out at DE, Tank would back him up. Canty, Rogers, and Ratliff would make for one of the best lines in the league.
We could then cut Ferguson, at 34 years old coming off injury and have him reunite with the Tuna..
His contract is fairly reasonable for a top tier DT like Rogers. There is no bonus money to worry about for now. We can always extend his contract and lessen the cap figure.
Either way, I'd rather pay 4-5 million a year to Rogers than give the same money to Ferguson, who is six years older than Rogers.
Get it done Jerry...I know Wade would be all for this trade, this is comparable to Jamaal Williams- type NT in SD. At 6'4" 340lbs....Nobody will be pushing this guy around.
I know there are some that will question his work ethic, but if you played for a perrenial losing team for 7 straight years...your motivation would be lost as well...We have one of the best strength and conditioning coaches around,(if he hasn't jumped ship to Miami yet..lol) and just the thought of playing for an elite team like Dallas, and coming home to Texas, just might be what this guy needs to turn the corner. All's I know, When this guy is healthy and in shape, there are no better DT in the league. This would be such a "huge" signing...in every sense of the word :-)~

Maybe not broken...
But I've never been a huge Jason Ferguson fan, and Jay Ratliff is better suited as a defensive end... And Tank Johnson ain't the answer...

A couple years ago he was a hot commodity
Now, he's an undisciplined, out of shape, underachiever.
If he signs a one year deal for a million, and can prove he is worth more, then I'm all for signing him. But, I bet he's going to want more. In which case, I'd say we have enough talent in Dallas already not to go for such a risk.
Plus with the draft coming up, we might find another guy to come in and compete with Tank for Fergie's
backup.

You think Fergie plays forever ?
come on guys...
"IF" Fergie even comes back, what are we going to do in 2009 ???? Fergie at 35 doesn't appeal to me, Tank's contract will be up and he's not a legit NT....spend a high pick on a DT in this years draft ? when we have much more pressing needs. I know of maybe 3 DT players in this years draft that would pan out to be good NT's...and no...Dorsey won't be available..
Shaun Rogers, when healthy, is one of the best DT in the league. He is 28 years old. And would cost us the same amount as 'ole Fergie. We would be able to rotate Tank in often to keep him fresh.
Detroit would make for a great dance partner in the trading game....
They need to rid themselves of a expensive underachiever, only because they signed his fellow DT Cory Redding to outrageous money in a contract last year.
We need to dump a overaged and overvalued unspectacular DT name Ferguson, A complete waste of a draft pick in Carpenter, And a viable, experienced, still young with some good skills, underwelming DL in Marcus Spears.
I am sure Detroit would be interested in Carp, and Spears. Let's get it done.

I think Fergie plays another season , at least
We can find a guy in the draft to come in and compete
for the back up spot. Maybe Tank even gets better. Ratliff can play NT, he's proven that and gotten locked up for 4 more years.
Why trade our young backups for a guy that may get cut.

Wasn't the same argument made about Davis
Before he came here to dallas, I would not agree with paying a lot of money to him, setup a one year deal that will show the cowboys what he has and if he is committed to getting himself turned around give him a bigger deal in line with his output.

Wrong area of emphasis...
My thoughts...
- I don't like the idea of spending FA money on front-seven players this off-season. I thought our front-seven was solid all year. We certainly held our own against the run, while getting more pressure on the QB than we have since Charles Haley was lining up for us. If we are going to re-sign Hamlin and possibly get MB3 locked up, we are not going to have the financial flexibility that we have had for the last few years. We are going to have to be very careful about how we spend our money, addressing mainly need positions.
- I just don't see Phillips style being able to motivating him when Rod Marinelli struggled to. Tank, remember, has always played hard but he's had off-field issues.
- Rodgers has never manned the middle of a 3-4 defense. I agree that he's a beast, and when healthy and motivated he's one of the best in the league, but I don't know if he has the discipline to anchor the middle of our front and I'm not willing to spend several million dollards to find out if a career underachiever can learn a new position.
- We know Tank will be back for at least one more year and Fergy's contract (although expensive) still has too much pro-rated signing bonus money (est. $2-3M) for us to release him this season and then turn around and pay market value for the services of Rodgers.

Very well put
We aren't playing fantasy football here.
If we signed Shaun we would very likely strengthen the NT position. WE WOULD ALSO BE COMMITTING $9.875MM TO THE NT POSITION.
Has anyone even begun to consider the ramifications of:
- Having 8.5% of the salary cap committed to one position.
- Having 3.5% of the salary cap committed to a back up. Given that Ferg and Shaun would be on the bench in a lot of passing situations that is a lot to pay for a couple of guys who will combine to see 75% of the defensive snaps.
- Making a backup the 4th highest paid guy on the defense.
- The locker room impact of signing a fat guy who was cut and takes plays off to a contract bigger than the ones key contributors like Ware, Ellis, Ratliff, Spencer, James, Ayodale, Burnette, Barber, Hamlin, Henry, Glen etc get.
- Signing this guy would ensure that we would lose Hamlin.
- What sense does it make to commit $4mm to our deepest position at the expense of our shaky secondary... AND PLEASE DONT SAY YOU THINK WE SHOULD SIGN SR & ASANTE SAMUEL & TURNER & RESIGN FLO & RESIGN MB3 & TRADE FOR CHAD JOHNSON....
Ugh. If we do this can we at least join hands and sing HAIL TO THE REDSKINS?

good pt
imagine the nickel package:
CB T Newman
CB D Hall
CB PM Jones
SS K Davis
FS Hamlin
Seriously, who else could field such a tough group: A CB guy who shoots people, a SS who gets shot, a CB who jumps guys on the field, a FS who gets jumped outside night clubs, and T Newman alone and scared.
I hope we could sign a Parole Officer to replace Bowles
