A hypothetical trade
So it doesnt seem as if Bobby Carpenter will ever get a shot here. (Granted he could with Pasqualoni gone).
But lets the Boys are destined to move him, would you trade him str8 up for the Chris Mortensen hyped Matt Jones?
http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...
Members of the Jaguars' offensive staff want to cut the cord with WR Matt Jones, a move head coach Jack Del Rio has resisted since last season. However, Del Rio is finding it increasingly difficult to defend Jones. The offensive staff has gained Del Rio's respect, mostly because of the team's resurgent 2007 season. While Del Rio has held out hope for improvement from Jones, he's close to giving in to his staff's wishes.

If I had a choice
of QB turned WR, I would take Stanback and Crayton over Matt Jones. He hasnt shown the speed that made him a #1 draft pick and has shown the hands and route running of a QB. No freakin thank you. We dont need to trade one 1st round bust for another.
Noooooooooooooo
He catches what, like 1 or 2 passes every third game? We get more production than that from the guys we have.
B-U-S-T!
And this is coming from an Arkansas Razorbacks fan.

Im not saying I would do it either
but thats likely the value you would get for bobbby carpenter.
maybe zimmer in cincy would take a flier on him and bobby would get to return to ohio (welllll)
I'd take Jones over Austin or Hurd
6'6" 232lbs..4.3 40. 42" verticle..24 years old...I consider that a weapon. I wouldn't care if he just came in during red zone offense. There is certainly more upside to this guy...I would not call him a bust, I would call him a first round project that hasn't come to fruition as of yet.I believe he gets better, It takes natural college receivers 2-3 years to learn all the in's and out's of the NFL offense...what makes you think it's easier for a college QB...just like Stanback, you can't expect him to be all pro by this upcoming season...we were in position last year, and even this year to take a flyer on some mid round picks, although I don't prescribe to taking anymore QB's and try to convert to WR in 2008... IF Pat White of WVU was available in this years draft, I'd certainly take him...he's going to succeed at the next level.
2007 final game against Houston/ Matt Jones: 8 receptions 138 yards and a TD...what did Carpenter do in 2007 ?
I don't want to hear about Carp not getting a chance...even if he was given a chance...Kevin Burnett would clearly beat him out.. Carpenter is a 3rd string ILB on a defense that isn't built for him. Of course i'd rather package Carp and Spears to Detroit to obtain Roy Williams-wr or to Miami for their 2nd round pick.

He has certainly flashed signs of promise...
during a few games during his NFL career. I'm all for shipping Bobby Carpenter out on the next train out, but as intruiging as it is, I'm not sure of bringing Jones to Dallas is the right move.
Negtives
*he doesn't contribute on special teams
*we are already developing a QB converted to WR on our roster
*he takes plays and even games off, lacking focus
*long strider - lacks short area quickness
*poor route runner and mediocre hands
*not motivated
Positives
*unbelievable combination of size and speed
*still learning the position (?)
*great red zone target
*Ray Sherman....can he motivate Matt Jones?

Why Matt Jones has been a bust....
....We all read about the Arkansas QB coming out of college. He was a laid back good old boy blessed with unbelievable size and speed. Welcome to the NFL, where very few can get by on natural talent alone. Jones' inability to put forth the time and effort it takes to take his game to any level has been the main reason the Jags have little hope for Jones to fulfill his promise. That and, in my assessment, a lack of short area quickness necessary for precision route running.
You can take Jones out of the country, but you can't take the country out of Jones.

Also...
He was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars...
Was Keenan McCardell the last decent receiver they had? Reggie Williams might have started to turn a corner this year, but the Jaguars have not drafted and developed a single good wideout in their history...
Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell
Formed a pretty good tandem for several years with Mark Brunell throwing them the football.
Reggie Williams had 10 TD's this season....pretty impressive considering he had just 38 receptions in an offense that led the league in rushing yards.

ahhhh...Jimmy Smith...
One of my favorites coming out of college...I was elated when the Cowboys drafted him...unfortunately...He became ill, apendectomy, infection, lost weight, and fell out of graces with Jimmy Johnson...They gave up on him way too early...shame we let him go...He only turned out to be a Hall of Fame receiver....

I too loved that pick
one of few bad decisions of the Jimmy Johnson Era to cut him.
No, I wouldn't do it.
Carpenter is at least good on Special Teams, and as he showed against Atlanta last year there IS some ability there. Jones is a physical specimen, but then again so was Mike Mamula.
Jones is a classic workout warrior bust
Jones was simply just another guy until he ran a 4.2 at the combine which had the scouts drooling and even then I was shocked to see him picked in the first rd. Jags were desparate for a big time WR, and still are, which is why they pulled the trigger on him.
I personally feel, like others above, that Hurd and Austin are better. I'd rather trade Carpenter for a draft choice than Jones.
Seems different with Garrard

Wait until he is cut
If the Jags cut him, then I would bring him to camp at Veteran minimum. He hasn't shown anything that would warant giving up a player or draft pick in a trade.
Jones has less trade value than Carp...
At least with Carp, you can kind of point to the fact he hasn't gotten consistent opportunities for playing time to explain his lack of production... Same can't be said for Jones.
He's not a guy I even consider trading for, because regardless of how much he's got left on his contract, it's too much. If he's released, bring him in on the cheap and give him a chance to make the team.
I agree....we wait...
I have a good feeling he'll be cut..you know Jerry will be keepin' an eye on his fellow Arkansas alum.
