Cowboys expected to announce Dave Campo hiring this afternoon
Nick Eatman says the Cowboys have hired Dave Campo and will announce it at a 2 PM (CST) press conference.
Former head coach Dave Campo, who was fired after three straight 5-11 seasons in 2002, visited with Wade Phillips and his staff here Monday afternoon and is expected to be named secondary coach at a 2 p.m. press conference.
The Breerman concurs over at the DMN blog.
According to a source, the Cowboys have plucked Dave Campo to their new secondary coach.
The Cowboys were resolute in getting Campo on board, as the Jaguars initially turned down a Dallas request to speak with their assistant head coach. But a second shot at it got the Cowboys the permission they needed, and Campo will return to Valley Ranch. There will be a press conference at 2 p.m. to welcome him.
BTB-regular kingbillito has a diary with another confirmation, here.

don't be too hard on Campo
in his defense he had zero talent to work with when he was head coach.
by Terry on Jan 29, 2008 12:36 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
he had more talent than Campo
not to mention Parcells actually had a word working Quincy Carter who started and played well in 2003 and Campo had 7 different starting QBs in 2 years.

Terry
I know you like the positive, but c'mon, Campo was a terrible head coach. Parcells added a few players and turned the team into a 10-6 playoff team. There's no comparison.

I think Campo is unfairly criticized
Look, I'm not saying he's Vince Lombardi or anything, but he really never had a chance to succeed with the lack of talent, especially on offense.
He had 7 starting QBs in 2 years, no coach can be successful under those circumstances. Parcells was lucky his first year because Carter was in his 3rd year and started to take the game seriously. Carter was as green as grass during Campo's reign and the rest of the starters were absolute garbage, Ryan Leaf, Clint Storener, Chad Hutchinson, no way Parcells goes 10-6 with those guys.
Not to mention Parcells started adding key talent right away in 2003, Terry Glenn, Richie Anderson, Ryan Young, Dan Campbell, and rookies Terence Newman and Jason Witten.
Parcells team in 2003 wasn't the same teams Campo had in 2001 and 2002 especially at the QB position and as we know is the most important position on the team. Notice how Parcells failed to make the playoffs after 2003 until he developed the talented Tony Romo.
Also, Parcells 2003 team mainly won because of their #1 ranked defense that year which was really Campo's defense since Zimmer was also Campo's DC as well.
Campo might not be HC material, but he sure wasn't given the opportunity to succeed after those piss poor drafts in the late 90's into 2000. The Joey Galloway trade killed us during that time and Tom Landry himself couldn't have saved us then.

I agree
Campo is under appreciated.
You give him a team w/Aikman, Irvin, Emmett and he can make them go 5-11.
But if you give a team w/Stoerner, Hambone, Bryant he can lead them to 5-11.
I bet he could coach almost any group of men to a 5-11 season and that says a lot.
Terry, when Campo is inducted to Canton I hope he chooses you to give his introduction.

Now that's comedy
On a scale of 10...I give it a 5-11.

Irvin retired in 99 FYI
and Aikman and Emmitt were well past their time during their last years as Cowboys

You are correct sir
But that means that Campo is not as good a coach as you made him out to be.

don't understand your logic
by Terry on Jan 29, 2008 8:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
well
you said he was just as good a coach as parcells
i initally agreed based on is ability to turn any group of men into a 5-11 team (lets face it other than that angle, campo was a pretty ad nfl coach)
once you pointed out that he had a bit less talent in his first year than i thought, i was forced to admit that he wasn't as good a coach as i had hoped.
i know you like him, but i guess i would still take parcells.

I still don't understand what you're saying
but in any event, the fact is Campo had crap talent for 3 years and Parcells had HOF players plus a future HOF DC.
As a rebuilder of franchises, knowledge of the game, he's very elite, as a HC who produces, very overrated.
Campo is a good coach who never had a chance to succeed as a HC. I happen to think if he's every bit as good as Phillips, who went 13-3 because he had talent.
This is really all I'm saying.

I think you are
completely insane.
and i love it. You are so passionate about the team you cant say anything critical. I get that and think its OK.
OK, I give up, you are right. Terry Campo is as good a head coach as Parcells. You win.
That is why he has been fired as a HC and a DC and is now a position coach.
I am amused by people saying he is a great 2ndary coach. WHO THE HECK KNOWS? How do we have any idea what role the position coaches play? Is Wade Wilson a great QB coach, an awful one? Beats me, but most people here speak about it with complete certainty.
Has Dallas ever had a lousy coach?
Are you aware that you have just spent a lot of time saying Campo is a great coach and Jerry is a good GM and Stanback will be a great WR?
Do you ever read this stuff? Are you for real.
PS Dont change
This cracks me up.

no mr numbers, I never said Campo was
a great coach, never said that all, thats what your assuming by me defending him against unfair criticism.
Like I said, Campo really can't fairly be judged as a HC because he had complete and utter instability at the QB position and no talent on offense to speak of other than an aging HOF RB and OG.
I guess if Belichick never gets hired to coach the Pats and Brady isn't drafted by them as an afterthought in the 6th rd, you would say he's a lousy coach for all those 5-11 seasons he had in Cleveland, with no QB and no talent.
Parcells was more successful in Dallas than Campo because he starting acquiring better and more talented players than Jerry did when Campo coached, its not because he was that much better of a coach because if he was, the Cowboys would have made the playoffs more than once in 4 years.
My argument was not that Campo is a better coach than Parcells, my argument is that a coach is only as good as the players he coaches. If you think that is homerism or insanity thats fine, buts its also reality.

you said...
Regarding Campo and Parcells as coaches, I can tell you that there is no way Parcells would have done any better than Campo with 2001-2002 rosters.
Two things:
- If you are saying one coach cant do better than the other with the same roster, you are saying the coaches are equal. Since Parcells keeps getting hired and Campo keeps getting demoted (I mean Jacksonville was willing to let him walk for a demotion, his 3rd straight coaching demotion) I would disagree with the otion they are equal.
- While you said that the Parcells couldn't do better with the same roster....Aside from the fact Parcells DID DO BETTER WITH THE SAME ROSTER (and before you start saying that Dave Campbell and Richie Anderson made the team echelons better), and that Campo had young bad Qunicy Carter while Parcells had the wise cagey grizzled veteran Quincy Carter, please recall that Campo managed the same 5-11 record with Troy Aikman.

they are only equal in terms of
actually coaching abilites IMO. The reason Parcells gets hired isn't because he's a great coach, its because he's a great rebuilder of losing franchises and acquiring talent. He has a great track record of doing this, its not necessarily his abilty as a HC.
So they're not equal in terms in those terms, but in terms of day to day coaching responsibities throughout the season and getting the most from their players, theres not much difference in my eyes.
The reality you refuse to face is that they weren't dealing with the same rosters and so what Aikman played in 2000, he did so without any WRs to speak of since Galloway got hurt and Irvin was retired. They had him in 2000, the year he got knocked into retirement because of Arrington's hit and a few aging HOFers in Smith and Allen. Yeah, I'm sure Parcells could do wonders with that.

it gets worse
he also thinks Campo is as as good a coach as Jimmy Johnson.
Campo = Johnson = Parcells = INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE (insane in the brain)
by 325424 on Jan 30, 2008 7:46 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yes you did (sort of)
Jimmy Johnson also had a kings ransom in draft picks from the Hershel Walker deal plus he had Troy Aikman with the first pick in the '89 draft. Not sure he would had quite the same success inheriting the 2003 Cowboys like Parcells did.

Jimmy Johnson is not > Campo????

your logic is way off
just because Johnson wouldn't have been as successful without all that talent doesn't mean I'm saying Campo is his equal, thats just ridiculous.
Nor did I say ever say Campo was a better HC than Parcells, I said their ability to actually coach, you know, Xs and Os, was equal, I never said the anything about overall HC ability, just coaching ability which are 2 separate things.
You're infering way too much into my intial argument that Campo was unfairly critized as a HC because of his lack of talent. You're the one that brough Parcells into the argument, not me.

Campo is an excellent
assistant coach. He never should have tried being HC under Jerry.

Wow Grizz
I am officially a BTB-regular! What an honor.
I think this is a good hire. When Campo was involved with our D it was always solid. He should never have been a HC but that was Jerry's egos fault.

I Never Thought I'd See The Day
Dave Campo is a great coach who was, like those of you in corporate America can relate to, promoted to his level of incompetence. How many of you out there wonder how the hell your idiot boss got his job? Answer: he was probably very good at what he did, but finally got a job that he's not good at and will therefore never advance or be demoted from.
Campo's promotion to head coach was the final act of Jerry's idiocy. They kept promoting him, and he kept standing up to the challenge. But the difference between a coordinator and head coach is immense.
Welcome back, Dave, we missed you!!
