Gibbs Done
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7...
Gibbs is retiring.
Honestly, I'm pretty suprised. I thought that the success that they had this year would lead us to see him for the next couple of years. In a way, it kind of reminds me of our situation with Parcells. Parcells was great at putting teams together, but seemed to struggle in dealing with this generation of players, as evidenced by how many people were happy to see him go. It seems like Gibbs has done a pretty good job of getting them into a better situation than they were in a few years ago (still not out of the woods), but he has made some key errors in managing games and can tend to get conservative when it comes to play-calling. It's gotten them to where they are, but change is probably not a bad thing for this team.
I kind of hoped he'd stay because I don't think Gibbs outcoaches people very often, and that's the type of guy you want coaching your arch-rival. Here's hoping DannyBoy picks someone worse..

I'm not surprised
I thought he would retire after the Buffalo game, he looked exhausted. Some may say so,but I wouldn't compare what Parcells did with the cowboys and what Gibbs did with the skins, not even close. The skins might be a little better than before he was hired but still have a roster full of square pegs trying to fit into round holes, they still have a long way to go to, Bill reorganized this franchise from top to bottom and has filled the cowboy roster with alot of talent. Some of that reorganization now seems to be departing in droves... thats becoming a worry.

I wouldn't call Ireland and Sparano droves
they are only 2 indivduals so far. We'll probably lose a couple meaningless FAs and thats it. Jerry won't allow any lateral moves, you can bank on that.
I'd hate to live like you Deke, always worrying and concerned about everything.

That is surprising news. I thought things were looking up for Wash.

When Gibbs delayed the signing of a 2-yr ext...
... it raised a flag -- IMO -- that he may not return.
On the heels of last year's non-playoff stinker of a season, the slow start in 2007, the death of Sean Taylor, and his 2-year-old grandson battling leukemia... I could see how he would honor this final year of his contract and ride off "into the sunset" for good.
The Skins are in better shape -- from a personnel standpoint -- than they were before Joe Gibbs arrived.
However, thanks to owner Daniel Snyder, they're gonna have like 20 UFAs... so there will be a lot of restructuring of contracts and releasing of players this off season on the heels of trying to find a Gibbs successor.
Smart thing for Washington to do: Hire from within, DC-Gregg Williams or OC-Al Saunders.
What Snyder will probably try to do: Make a splash by contacting big names like Bill Cowher and Pete Carroll.
Being a Dallas fan, I hope he hires a Head Coach with a totally different scheme -- offensively and defensively -- than their current systems. That would make their learning curve that much steeper and their adjustments next year that much greater.
:)

On a serious note however...
... I do pray that Joe Gibbs' grandson recovers from leukemia and goes on to lead a long healthy life.

I am with you on that...
Joe Gibbs is a gentleman and a fine human being. I wish him God's speed and join you in praying for his grandson. I am sure that his grandson's condition weighed heavily in his decision.

Brian Billick
There are two coaches out there with rings: Cowher and Billick. I expect the 'skins to go hard after Cowher but I think he is waiting for the Carolina job to open. I could see them hiring Billick.
That said, we should worry about Jason Garrett. Snyder has gone the college coach route, he has gone the Hall of Fame coach route, he has gone the good resume coach route (Schottenheimer), but he has not yet gone the young NFL assistant route...yet.

This departure was forecast
more than a year ago by proffotballtalk.com. This site has no love of the Cowboys and so remains a love/hate relationship for me but they do get scoops on regular basis and had this one the earliest so I am not surprised.
I don't see Coach Parcells and Coach Gibbs as parallels either except as you say with some generational issues. However Coach Parcells did clean house on the knucklehead in Dallas and Coach Gibbs may have left this job undone.
Speaking of Coach Parcells this is a link I found today (probably a Giants fan) that would not have been funny for Dallas fans in 2003-2006 but now that we are past that time really is funny and true of the time.
