Cowboys miracle comeback is crushed in overtime
Cardinals 30 - Cowboys 24
I've got nothing for you.
We stunk.
We came back.
We stunk in overtime.
We lost.
It's possible I'll write something later tonight, but don't count on it.
P.S. Losing doesn't mean you can start dropping profanity bombs. So don't do it.

It was Curtis and Rogers
I went back and watched it several times. Curtis let the guy on the end run past him untouched who ended up blocking the punt, and Rogers let the other guy right thru the line who recovered the blocked punt, but he could have had a shot to block it too.
McBriar had no chance at all.

- punt block by AZ in OT to win the game for them.

This will be a fun week coming up with blog topics....
Ok, so 4-2 isn’t that bad, but even a perpetual homer like me has to admit things are wrong. Yeah, Romo looked shaky but I think the issues can be narrowed down to two things….
Offensive line.
Special Teams.
I think the defense did a pretty good dang job of holding the Arizona offense in check for most of the game, allowing just 17 points, granted those were in the 2nd half. The offensive line was atrocious, and Romo was getting blasted every single play. A lot of people are going to scream bloody murder about his fumbles, yet all but one came from a hit on his blind side. And we all know what happened on “special” teams.
Also, I know a lot of you are mad at the teams’ effort, but don’t count on Wade leaving anytime soon. You just don’t fire a head coach in the middle of the season unless everything has completely tanked.
Now, Bruce Read on the other hand…….

Yes, Brandon. What is up with our O-line lately?
They’re not consistently creating holes for MB3 like they used to.
They’re having more problems protecting Romo.
What is up?
It’s like that unit — and the skill players on O are in some kind of funk at times during a game. That’s what I’ve noticed over the last three games, anyway.

They haven't played well the past 3 weeks
I would call that tanking. Of course, I am over-exaggerating. I’m just tired of not seeing the team prepared and not having a fire lit under them. I haven’t seen a single coach get in Romo’s face when he throws an interception or makes any other kind of bone-headed play. I think this team needs a different HC to succeed in any form in the playoffs.

Now what?
I’ve been beat up on this board since the end of last season for bitching about the Cowboys lack of fire, bonehead mistakes, and overall poor play. I think that all of those problems can be attributed to one thing: poor coaching. That’s why Romo is not held accountable for his poor ball handling, the defense is in prevent the entire game, and the biggest, baddest offensive line in the game gets dominated for 60 minutes. The fact that Read is still the special teams coach at this point is absolutely disgusting.
I love this team, I like the players, and I even like Wade. But I really want to see them play to their potential. I think that has to start at the top.

by Freaky Harp on Oct 12, 2008 7:05 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
As much as we hate his turnovers
If Romo can’t take the gloves off, you get shoddy play. His new emulation of Brady is hurting his style, if you ask me.
Last year, he would have dodged the sacks, maybe run for the 1st, maybe thrown, maybe gotten an INT. This year, he takes the sack and fumbles. Let Romo be Romo. I’d take a 3/2 TD / INT ratio if we put up 50 or so TDs in a season.

Last year...
…things seemed to bounce our way for most of that season.
So far — in ‘08 — we haven’t been able to get away with playing crappy for parts of games and pulling it out in the end.
Both losses have been close, and in both cases, our team had moments of ineptitude… then rallied to take brief leads — only to lose in the end.
They need to “right the ship” and get some things corrected. I don’t want the dam to burst.

Start Planning for the Offseason...
Time for some tough talk, but accurate.
On “paper”; this is a better team than last year!
Last year, this team was 13 – 3, but lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Technically, this team, should be able to at least replicate that.
They will not.
After this loss, this team will NOT:
Win the NFC East
Will be lucky to finish 10 – 6, if they get lucky
Will enter the Playoffs, at best, as a Wild Card
Will, if lucky, win One Playoff game, the first for the Franchise in a record drought of 12 years.
Get bounced during the second round of the Playoffs.
There is something desperately wrong with this team, and I don’t know what it is, but that is it’s future, unfortunately.
That doesn’t even factor in the following:
a) Possibility of T-New not making it back this year
b) Unknown injuries to Matt McBair and Jay Ratliff out of this game
c) A suspension of Adam Jones, and the possibility of his career ending at any time
d) TO deciding it’s time for a meltdown
Not pretty, but that’s the way it will go.
In the Offseason, time for Jerry Jones to fire Wade Phillips, and give Jason Garrett a chance; though he has not been all that great of an Offensive Coordinator this year, frankly.
Oh yeah, what happens if Felix Jones is out for any length of time?

But Terry, as much as I usually agree with you, the Cowboys are not the best team in the league right now, and unless they fix ST and stop the turnovers, they don’t look like SB contenders.

You always struck me as being very objective and as usual, I agree with your analysis. Look at my post from last week. We are the most talented team in the league, but talent doesn’t win championships and you don’t get voted into the Super Bowl.

Good teams go through periods that they have to survive.
Ask Chicago, or Indy, or San Diego, etc.
Just hang on, take a deep breath. We’re no where near as bad off as the Giants were last year at this time. This is not the time to start panicking.
Kicking some butts, yes. But panicking, no.

Hate to break it to everyone but we are not going far this year......
I’m probably overreacting again but here it is….
Our OL played the worst I’ve seen in two years. Flozell and Colombo were repeatedly beaten.
Henry has to be removed as a starter. I would rather go with Scandrick, Pacman and Jenkins as the three starters. Henry has to go in the off season or moved to a backup role, or FS.
Crayton sucks…..I know he scored the one TD, but it should be a little more clearly to everyone that we need a legite #2 Wr. Teams are shutting down TO and playing Witten tight. As we can all see once that happens Romo has nobody to goto. Romo is holding onto the ball way too much because Crayton and the others are not getting open. Jerry seriously needs to consider a trade for Wr. This offense is in a tail spin right now. Teams have figured out once you shut down TO and Witten we have nobody else.
Play calling was really quesionable as well.

Garrett needs to rethink the way he is using TO. If teams use the same defensive strategy to stop him, then he needs to come up with new schemes in the passing game. I don’t remember TO having trouble getting open last year with the same WR corp minus a year of experience.

The reason why Jerry will go out and get a playmaker in the offseason or draft a player. He is too inconsistant. Woop…dee…do… he made one play in five weeks. We still lost the game and he was a non-factor the rest of the game and prior to that. The reason Romo is holding onto the ball is because players like him are not getting open when TO is doubled covered. We need a player that will make the defense pay when TO is doubled. We need to see less of Crayton and more Austin like Larry Brown said on the Ticket.
A 10-6 or 11-5 team may not make the playoffs in the NFC….

That’s what this offense needed. Missing a player like Terry Glenn is now showing in this offense. We were able to fool teams last year, but not this year. Team have caught on how to stop the playermakers on this team and it’s not difficult. Stop TO and limited Witten and you have a good chance of winning.

And this team is already loaded with playmakers on offense. TO, Witten, MB3, El Gato, Romo, you can’t have a steak on every plate to quote BP. The offense is doing well with the players out there now.
Before today: Dallas -1st in scoring in the NFC, 3rd in passing yds/game, 8th in rushing yds/game, 3rd in overall yds/game.

As I see it, The 4 division teams right now will be The Giants, the Bears, the Cards, and the Panthers. The remaining teams in the NFC who could challenge the Cowboys for the 5th seed are the Skins, the Packers, The Vikings, and the Falcons.
There will be 3 teams from the NFC East in the playoffs.

The ST was absolutely dreadful
The schemes this team trots out there for both returning and covering kicks are terrible. They can’t protect the kicker at all. PacMan, advertised as a game-changer, has been a subpar returner.
Henry has been truly bad this year. He gets burned continuously and I’m getting absolutely tired of it. If he can’t perform, let one of the rookies start. Even if they don’t perform any better, which seems unlikely based on what we’ve seen, you’ll be improving on your prospects for the future.
Crayton’s taking advantage of the attention that teams are diverting to TO’s side of the field. It’s about time.
Felix is special.
Romo doesn’t look like Romo. Whatever new style hes trying, it needs to be scrapped.
The O-line played like many words I shouldn’t use here.Gurode in particular has been disappointing since he first stretch of games.
PacMan’s playing better D than he’s getting credit for.
Larry Fitzgerald is a monster. He might be my favorite player if he wore our colors.
Ware is awesome. Rat is awesome. We still play great prevention run D, but the initial push isn’t there at the point of attack. The Cardinals abused us on third and short.
If the Cowboys make that stop on 3rd and 17, this is a completely different game. They had momentum, they had the Cardinals D completely gassed, they had a lead and they looked absolutely dominating. And then a screen pass shoots it all to hell.
FIRE BRUCE READ NOW.
Otherwise, don’t panic. This team is still absurdly talented and poised to win.

You calling for the head of the guy who leads the league in TD’s? We will all acknowledge he isn’t bringing his A game, but come on..
This week Romo and JG job is to figure out a way to get Romo on track earlier.. Once he does that we are dialed. I am starting to second guess keeping Romo strictly in the pocket. Isn’t that what teams wanted to do last year, because he was killing teams with his ability to improvise?
Romo best throws are coming on the run. The TD to Austin vs GB. The 1st down to Witten tonight.. He is precise when he is on the move. Time to go back to being Romo, I think keeping him the pocket has him thinking to much-It just isn’t Romo..

Not to Pile On
But there were some big questionable calls that went our way. Jenkins runs over Fitzgerald on a third down pass that should have been called interference; an early whistle wiped out a Romo fumble; and while the tuck rule call on Romo in the end zone was correct, it was a half inch away from being another gift touchdown for the Cardinals.
Those early bad calls helped settle the team down and keep us in the game. It could have gotten 21-0 ugly against us, but instead it was just 7-0. We look to be a jittery, uncertaint team right now. Again, it goes back to the coaching.

Alright
Now that I’ve had a nice 45 minutes to calm down, and well, 3 beers, I will respond without the profanity. Sorry Grizz for the last one..
Anyway, this team really needs to put up or shut up. Coming into the season we were a perenial favorite to win the NFC, and now, we are struggling in all aspects of the game. Special teams are horrid, and have been since the PRESEASON. And it really seems like we can never get all aspects of the game together….EVER! When the passing game struggles, the running game is dominate. When the pass defense sucks, the regular defense(for the most part), plays great. When the defense sucks in general, the offense is unstoppable. If this team wants to be successful in the post season, they NEED to win games like today. They did show a lot of poise and determination to come back, but once again, the offensive line failed. I cannot blame Tony at all today for his play, as almost all of his fumbles came from hits from behind. i really don’t know if this is due to him holding the ball, or not blocking, but there is no excuse why Barber should be getting hit in the backfield every single play. Just dreadful play on the offense.
Also, this team really needs to get a fire under them. They are no longer better than their 2007 counterpart, they are horrible. They play with little to no emotion most of the time. T.O. was right to call them out a few weeks back about getting him the ball, because atleast he cares to win.
Also, I am SICK of Tony trying to act like Tom Brady in the pocket. He isn’t. He needs to learn to scramble and move, and not sit there thinking his line will keep him safe. Play reckless. I’d rather 3 TD’s and 2 picks over 1 TD, 0 picks, 3 sacks, and 3 fumbles.

yeah
it’s like we see flashes of each unit playing up to what we expect, but not consistently and not all at the same time. they all have the potential, but need to put it all together at the same time and execute if they want to be champions.

I don’t like what I saw at all, but we are still 4-2 and we can build from there..
I am not overly concerned, considering the hottest team in sept. and oct. hasn’t won the superbowl in 8 yrs.

Urgency Starts With Coaching
Wade may have been in coaching one year too long. There’s a difference between standing up for your players and staff to the media and not acknowledging your team, the most talented in football, is dispassionate, undisciplined, and arrogant.
Tony Romo’s inability to hold onto the ball is negating his brilliance, and it needs to stop now. Flozell Adams had perhaps the worst game of his career, as did Colombo. Our defensive secondary (read: Anthony Henry) didn’t want the ball as much as the Arizona receivers. If we don’t have a new special teams coach in 48 hours, I think it’s proof that Wade’s denial of fact is a hinderance to the team. His job should be in jeapordy.
Did anyone see who missed their assignment on the last punt?
What an embarassing loss. I don’t give a damn about how good Arizona played or how valiantly we came back in the 4th quarter.

The Cardinals had a return set up on the game’s final play, but Sean Morey went for the block when the Cowboy across from him didn’t touch him.
The Cardinals had been double-teaming Kevin Burnett, the Cowboys’ best special teams coverage guy, so Read shifted Burnett from tackle to guard on the final punt. The player who replaced Burnett at guard — Morey was too nice to identify the guy — made a mistake that resulted in a blocked punt for a TD and bruised right ankle for Mat McBriar.

there isn't a qb
who can hold on to the ball when he gets blindsided, simple as that. OL gets credit for those fumbles, not the qb.

Romo wasn’t blindsided. He got pressure, and would fumble when trying to run or throw. Big difference. It isn’t like he didn’t see the hits coming.

Come on Terry, you're usually smarter than this
QB’s get blindsided all the time and hold onto the ball.
No matter what, it gets credited to the QB. He’s the one that has to tuck it when necessary.

Every QB who ever gets hit when he doesn’t know it is coming fumbles right?
Come on. I have seen QB’s get hit flat out in the back and hold onto the ball. And Romo doesn’t have that excuse anyway. He wasn’t blindsided.
Everyone knows Romo has a ball security problem. He always has had one. And it seems to be getting worse over the last cople of games

your a homer
I was one of Romo’s biggest supporters his first year. Ask Grizz to drag out the comments from the last couple years. I alwayd defended Romo. Until this year when he should be progressing, nor regressing.
And no, in order to be a Cowboys fan I DO NOT have to take the good with the bad. What a silly thing to say.
Romo is not playing good and hasn’t for the last 3 weeks. Fumbles, INT’s, overthrows, hanging on to the ball too long, poor decision making. Everyone else, from people on here to the media can see that he isn’t playing well. Only you hold to this illusion that he does nothing wrong and it is all someone else’s fault.

You’re so blind that if someone makes legitimate criticism about a QB who is off his game and not playing well, and hasn’t played well for 3 weeks, you call them a hater. It is so silly.

its because its not going to change
and as a true Cowboys fan you just have to accept it. Romo will make big plays and create magic, he’ll also make mistakes.
Got accept both as a fan whether you like it or not.

the problem...
is that this year it seems like there are bigger mistakes.
and also the mistakes far outnumber the big plays and the magic.
when that ratio starts going poorly, then we start losing…

O Line
Im sick of everybody saying how good our o-line is, they r the most inconsistent line in the league. the pass blocking….awful….the run blocking….poor.
Romo didnt play well, but a ton of that was on the O line, it may have been flozell’s worst game of his career. The cardinals d-line is nowhere close to that of NYG or Wash or Phi. they better figure out how to protect Romo consistently or it’s gunna be a disappointing year.
by iCowboy on Oct 12, 2008 9:06 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
no qb can look good with poor OL line
its absolutely impossible, and the fact that he put up a 113 qb rating just shows you how great Romo really is. Majority of QBs would have gotten blown away today. Romo hung in and played tough to the end.
Thats remarkable leadership and character.

That's concerning
Not just the injuries, but the fact that you leave your LT in the game with a useless left arm.
They should have put Free in the game, he couldn’t have done any worse. That’s a poor decision by the coaches.
