Gestapo Goodell strikes again: what it means

Gestapo Goodell strikes again.

JJT guessed the suspension would be one-game and $40,000. Boy was he wrong.

Today the NFL suspended Adam Jones for a minimum of four games. The NFL.com story is here. Goodell will revisit this suspension on Nov. 16 to determine if the suspension will be indefinite. The suspension is without pay.

But wait there's more.

The decision on whether Jones can return to play will be based on his strict compliance with his NFL and Cowboys treatment plans as well as on evaluations of Jones' progress that will be provided to Goodell by clinical experts retained by the NFL.

What this basically means is that when Goodell and Jerry Jones say "jump" Pacman better say how high. I'm also concerned about the use of clinical experts but at this point Jones is in no place to complain.

The best thing about this new development is that the 'Boys don't have to send Tennessee a sixth-round pick and will get the Titans' fifth-rounder.

Three thoughts about this. Number one, Jones knew what he was getting into when he accepted this Faustian deal. Anything that could misconstrued to be misconduct, Goodell made it more than clear that he was going to come down hard on Jones. It's not really about Jones anymore. It's about Goodell's reputation as a sheriff. Jones really backed Goodell into a corner and Goodell, IMO, felt compelled  to reaffirm his reputation. Number two, Goodell has too much power and this conduct policy code is too ambiguous. If you can suspend someone for an incident where he wasn't arrested or convicted, can't you pretty much suspended anybody for anything? Lastly, I don't feel like the suspension fits the crime but I understand the argument that Jones' past could justify it. There's a good argument that Jones shouldn't even be playing in the league. I just feel there's also a plausible argument that this incident did not warrant a four-game suspension and possible indefinite ban. I mean, a drunken fight with your bodyguard? Seriously?

I agree with you Tuna

I think that this situation was greatly over blown and I would also venture to say that if Pacman played for another team and this incident had happened in another town, that it would not have rececied much if any attention. I think that the media in Dallas is sensationalistic and completely blew this up. I mean if you remember the first stories that were put out, they were all wrong. Once the actual details came out a couple days later, everything was different, but the damage was already done.

I don’t want anyone to take me wrong. I don’t feel sorry for Pacman, but I think Goodell is severely overstepping his authority and seems to be taking things to another level. No arrest, no conviction, and Pacman’s name wasn’t even mentioned in the police report. Doesn’t require much evidence I guess.

Please

Do not make excuses for Pacman. This is supposed to be his last chance. His LAST CHANCE.

Cut him. Wash your hands of him.

I disagree! No tolerance is no tolerance!

There are alot of players in the NFL who don’t screw up and don’t need 2nd, 3rd, 4th. chances!

So he gets in a fight

with those there to protect him after being warnedanymore instances will result in a lifetime ban, gets a chance to play again and you compare Goodell to one of the most sadistic organizations of the 20th century???

I’m speechless

in a vacuum this incident was no big deal

but for Pacman, any little thing is a big deal. Jerry knew this was the risk going into it, and Pacman has no one to blame but himself.

Good thing M-Jenk and O-Scan are looking pretty good.

This is all on AJ. He knew what Goodell’s exceptations were and the requirements for his continued reinstatement. As an isolated incident, sure it was no big deal. But therein lies the problem. This ISNT an isolated incident. Its the continuation in a line of self destructive behavior.
I dont think Goodell had any choice but a minimum of four games. Otherwise he would have been undermining his own efforts to clean up the unacceptable conduct of a growing number of players in the league. He was sending a message to those players as much as he was to AJ. In my opinion, AJ is lucky it wasnt for the rest of the year or permanently.

I agree that Goodell is out of control

He’s basically become a dictator in handing down these punishments. There is NO proportionality, NO standards, NO reasons given. “Gestapo” is a bit much, but he has taken things much further than Tags ever would have. Maybe that’s good, maybe that’s bad, but in my opinion, with no rules, there is no legitimacy (especially after the egregious handling of spygate, inconsistent suspensions for players and coaches, etc.)

That said, Goodell had another legitimacy crisis here, and I think he had to do something. He told Pacman he would have a zero tolerance policy, and he had to back it up. I didn’t realize all of the alcohol-related incident stuff when I first read about this. A 4 game suspension is probably generous, but I must say, I have serious doubts as to whether Pacman can make it through the next 4 weeks trouble-free.

I agree

I don’t get how Henry got 8 and 4 game suspensions, but Brandon Marshall only gets one? It makes no sense to me.

he violated his probation for crying out loud

how much more does there need to be!

If I was Goodell I would have banned him for life, he’s lucky and got off easy IMO.

Goodell is his probation officer!

He’s the one that set the terms of his probation.

P. Jones is immature, irresponsible, and unreliable

He KNEW he was on his last straw.

He KNEW we needed him with T-New out for a month.

Da King even warned him a week prior to keep a low profile.

But guess what? He went ahead and violated his probation anyway.

Sorry fellas, that’s on P. Jones.

Oh it is

And I don’t want there to be any confusion: I think the suspension is warranted in this case. My problem with Goodell is that his system of discipline is as lawless as the players it disciplines. I just think it’s bad business for the commish not to have some kind of order.

As for Pacman, might as well have suspended him for life. I think his NFL career is over.

by grapejoos on Oct 14, 2008 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree with you joos

While I think Goodell did the right thing in this case, his levying of suspensions/punishment does seem uneven to say the least. Spygate in particular was handled horribly. To my understanding, he did fine Belichek as much as league bylaws allowed him to. But the one game suspension was crap. Maybe there was next to nothing on those tapes, but now we’ll never know. Maybe all Belichek deserved was a slap on the wrist. But Goodell wants to be the sheriff. Yet he has a relatively small track record, especially when all that went down. So its very easy to form opinions of favoritism and hypocrisy playing out at league headquarters. He needs to be more aware of that in my opinion.

I like conspiracies, so I'll say...

Jerry made that happen because he knows they’re going to suck the next four games anyway until everyone gets healthy. That way Goodell could still save face, and Jerry got his 6 back from TEN so he could send it over in the RW deal.
