CB Ty Law lobbies to come to Cowboys
just cribbing DMN blog again here, but passing on an interesting tidbit...
Five-time Pro Bowler Ty Law, 34, would love to play for a Super Bowl contender that needs some veteran help at cornerback. The Cowboys happen to have only one healthy, non-suspended cornerback with any starting experience.
Law, who started every game for Kansas City last season, mentioned Dallas and Green Bay as potential good fits for him to NFL Network's Adam Schefter. He said he isn't looking for a lot of money, but just wants to "feel respected."
Asked about the idea of playing in Dallas, Law said: "That would be a great opportunity, to play for a contender. I just don't want to play for anybody. I want to play for a contender, where I have the chance to go to the Super Bowl. I can help Dallas. I have the experience, I have been there before and I can help get a team over the edge. I'm not going to be a weak link for anybody and I'd love to try to provide some leadership for Dallas."Law has been working out in Florida and is reportedly in discussions with the Dolphins. He said he would be ready to play right away.

Great minds think alike
I just posted this about the same time as you, scott. LOL!
What do you think? Would you want Law? Or are you content with what we have on our roster at DB?

I say why not
He doesn’t have a big personality, like the rest of him. Smart player.
Where will you be when the Sixers hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy? Hopefully Liberty Ballers.

yeah, you just beat me to it
I’m certainly intrigued. this part is interesting…
"I can walk in now and play on Sunday," Law said from Florida, where he has been training. "I just want to go out and play ball. I’ve been training to play, I’m ready to play, and I want to go play."
I don’t know his history, why is he a free agent? Seems like it could be a great fit right about now.
Here’s some stats:
Law said he now weighs 205 pounds, which was his playing weight for 13 NFL seasons. He hadn’t missed a game the past three seasons; the last one he missed was in 2004, when he broke his foot. Over the past three seasons, Law has intercepted 18 passes, giving him 58 interceptions — 52 in the regular season, six more in the postseason — during his career.
Who do you cut?
Pac Man or Ball?

Get rid of Ball, and bring this guy in....physical,hard hitting, ball hawkin', heads up football player...i like him...
He was never fleet of foot, and i’m sure has lost a step on top of that, but he’s no slower, or worse than Anthony Henry…If he’s willing to play special teams, and understand he may not be a starter here, i’m all for it…i wanted him at the beginning of the year…..now in desperation mode, we kinda need him…pull the trigger Jerry…….of note: I noticed once promising LB Napolean Harris was just released, but this Polk guy seems to be a good fit here…

I like Harris, too
but Polk’s ST ability is the difference.

They should at least work him out.
The secondary is a real concern right now and Law could at least show Jenkins and Scandrick some things.
btw....Law can also play FS....versatile, and productive....

As I said
on silverblue5’s post…I’m all in. Get this guy in and work him out Jerry. A guy with no attitude and some skills. He may have lost a step, but I think being a Corner is just as much about being smart as it is being fast, and this guy did it well for a lot of years.
Me: "We got Roy Wiliams in a trade today." My Wife: "What does that mean?" Me: "Well, it at least means that there are two poeple playing for the 'Boys now with the same name."
A few hours later: My Wife: "If our next child is a boy, what would you want to name it?" Me: "How aobut Roy Wiliams?"
Bring him in for a look.
If anything, he can bring leadership and experience to a still young secondary. He obviously will help Jenks and Scan learn the position better, but he can also teach Newman some things. Law is a potential HoFer with a ring, and after all the Pacman drama recently, he could bring in that veteran leadership. Why not bring in one of the best CB’s in recent history? If Law can still go, and is dedicated(from his quotes he looks like it), and he really seems interested in helping Dallas, he can only help. And I love his versatility at FS with injuries/weaknesses with Roy/Watkins/Davis back there.
We need some Law in Big D.
Law would definitely be a major upgrade
over Pacrat who is a severely overrated CB. He’s everything that Pacrat is not, a great leader and veteran who would be a tremendous influence on the youngins.
In Romo we Trust
We need to kick the tires..

Veteran
With newman out we need a vet at corner. With the experience he has , its a cheap signing and if this is true I dont understand why the cowboys havent already done this.

Mickey just said unless he comes in at the Vet min
there is no chance of him coming here. Not after they just spent a ton of money on RW.
Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!
Yeah, Law usually asks for a lot of money.
I wonder just how serious he is playing for a SB contender.

he says in the article it's not about the $
seems like he would be willing to take minimum salary for one last shot at a ring.
i hope he means it... esp if he wants to play for Dallas!!!

+1
If he’s serious about the money not being an issue (which I find to be hilarious for him to say) why not bring him in for a look at least. A one year deal for a guy like him at low cost is really a no brainer.
T-New, shutting down WR's for Dallas since 2003

I just don't know about this
Bringing in Law slows the development of Jenkins and Scandrick.
Aaron Ross sure paid off for the Giants last year in the playoffs, when he got throw into the mix during the season.
True about the development
But you also have to look at the fact that as of today we only have 4 non injured, non suspended CB’s plus Courtney Brown, so 5 really. But only Henry has a lot of experience, and if he gets injured Dallas will basically have 4 rookies back there. I’d feel better with another vet for added insurance.

Well, he said he didn't care about the $$$
I’m not saying I believe him, but if’s true he’d be worth it. At least the Cowboys should explore the possibility.

A zebra doesn't change it's stripes
No matter what comes out of it’s mouth. He’s been nothing but a mercenary in NFL terms for years.
Re development - win now
it is a factor, but with a team that is built to win now, you want the best guys that can do the job right now, period. Same thing with WR, you can argue that RW11 slows Miles’ development, but you wouldn’t not take him just for that reason.
I don’t know if Law is that guy, but it’s certainly worth a look, especially if what he says about money is true. (And why would he say it if he didn’t mean it? Seems that would not be a good negotiating tactic.)
And although they’re good enough to start as rookies, you would generally like to be able to ease them in more, and there’s an argument that having another experienced vet CB who has a superbowl ring would provide some valuable leadership and mentoring for the younger guys, and actually for the D and team in general.
with the depth we started with at CB, we’re better off now than we were last year with TNew was out (even though they are rookies Jenkins and Scandrick are upgrades over Reeves and Jones), so we don’t have to bring someone else in, but our depth is now gone, and we’d be a lot more secure replacing Pac, especially with TNew injuries dragging out.
and the main question is whether he can help us go for the goal this year, not how it affects the development of the younger players, and that might not be negative anyway.
Who says we're built to win now?
Romo, Barber, Witten, RW2, Ratliff, Bigg, Flo, Gurode, Hamlin, Newman…on and on…all signed for the next 4-6 years.
I’d say we’re setup to win for a long time. And I’m sure we’ll be adding Ware and possibly Canty to that list this offseason.
I see your greater point about how he would provide leadership, but to say we’re built to win now is wrong in my opinion. We’re better built for the long haul with young core players signed for a long time.
Jerry clearly wants to win now
well, you’re quite right Jerry is building the core to be a contender for the next several years, but I think it is obvious that he also wants to win now, this year. the window only stays open for so long. plus he’s got a new stadium he wants to open as the champ next year! that’s his plan, man. and he’s shown he’ll do whatever is in his power to make that happen. we are a contender this year and he wants to win this year. the RW11 deal is for the next five years, but he expects Roy to help us win this year. If he can bring in a CB that will help us win this year, at a reasonable price, he’ll do it. He’s not going to sacrifice the long term in a huge way, but in this case it’s arguable whether it would be a negative for their development anyway.
what it really comes down to, I think, is this. I think we can agree Ty Law is an upgrade over Alan Ball. Is Alan Ball such a promising rookie that we wouldn’t want to cut him for a guy who will just be here one year? That’s whose development it would really stunt! I don’t think so. (We could probably sign him to the PS anyway.)
I think they at least have to work him out. If Law really is ready to play like he says, and willing to play cheap like he says, and really wants to play for us like he says, I have a hard time seeing how Jerry doesn’t do it.
