Around SBN: On returning Clemson/South Carolina to National Importance

I know it's early, but let's talk draft needs.

Obviously, we're only a quarter of the way through the season, but seeing the post about the Cowboys having a lot of picks got me thinking.  What are the Cowboys biggest needs for next year?

Clearly one issue is age, as T.O. and Zach won't be here forever.  Unless Bobby Carpenter makes huge strides over the next 15 games, we need a stud WR and an ILB.  Or do we need a WR?  I feel like Hurd, Austin, and Stanback just may be able to continue to improve enough that that's not our top priority, unless something great falls to us.

I think a big, mean, monster in the middle would be nice.  Then Ratliff can move to DE, and our DL would be dominant.  Unfortunately, true 3-4 NTs are extremely rare, so they might have to go DE.

OL is always a concern, especially given Columbo's contract situation, and the poor backups that we have now.

I can't really think of any other glaring needs, but there' s a couple of biggies there.  Maybe SS if Roy, Watkins, KD, or CB don't step up, but I expect that Henry will move to FS and Hamlin to SS.

WR

We won’t need one in the draft. We will sign either Ocho Cinco or Roy Williams this offseason.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

I'd rather have Williams.

Ocho Cinco will be 31 and the guy has a TON of baggage.

I think you have it backwards

CJ is a FA after this season

TJ is the FA, not Chad..

Roy Williams is also a FA..

CJ is under contract for 3 more seasons

TJ will never hit the market. He will get a new deal with Cinci. We have a better chance at Boldin or Williams.

any defensive position (except CB) and OL

I really like our young WRs so IMO, WR isn’t a high priority as I think Austin, Hurd and Stanback can form a great corp of WRs in the future.

Our defense still needs more playmakers and our OL needs much better depth.

second that....ILB and DE

I’m not satisfied with Bradie James as a 3-4 ILB and we need to replace Spears at DE. As we all can see, which I pointed out a few weeks ago Spears would disappear when it mattered and he has. Having said that, I think Hatcher will be the starting DE by next season, if not sooner. Spears is not cutting it……

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

by Boyzfan94 on Oct 3, 2008 12:46 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hatchers been a non factor as well...........not getting better at that position.....

Spears will be playing out his contract, and no rookie 3-4 DE would come in here and start…….There is really only one 3-4 DE worthy of 1st round status : Jackson -LSU…surely not what I want to spend our first pick on…

O LINE is for sure our best bet….And there should be plenty of good ones available late in the first round. top OT’s and OG’s will be there..OT’s-Oher, Monroe, Loadholt, Smith, Meridith,OG’s-Robinson, Johnson, Urbik- OC’s Mack, Luigs

I for one am not sold on going with Hurd, Austin, and Stanback as our future WR corps…….I do like Stanback, and Austin may be coming along better than anticipated, but Hurd is in the last year of his contract, and has not shown me enough to warrant a new contract (especially after blowing that gift wrapped on side kick ball)…All that being said, I am with N41D that Harvin, Heyward-Bey, and Maclin, IF available, should be considered with our first rounder…..

ILB- hmm…..really only TWO ILB’s worthy of first round considerations : Maualuga-USC and Lauranaitis-OSU …..neither would be there when we pick…Brinkley and Mauga can be had in the 2nd-3rd round range..Cushings-USC might end up being a good find in those rounds as well.

Safety- William Moore of Missouri is by far the best safety in the country………I don’t see him making it out of the top 20 picks…….so Chung and Hamlin would be available…and neither worthy of our first rounder…

A beheamoth NT out of Alabama – Cody…6’7" 360lbs…..might declare….but it would be reaching to take in round one……

Final assessment : We either trade up for a top flight WR or OL, stay put and take what comes to us, trade for a bonifide veteran WR, or do a Jerry, and trade out of the first, and add extra picks…

I want an O Lineman or WR……

We will draft OL- Herman Johnson out of LSU…..6’7" 355 lbs….

If you can name me one 3-4 DE in next years crop, that would be available late in round one, that can come in here and start over Spears, Canty, Ratliff, Bowen, or Hatcher....I'd be delighted...

There isn’t any…….so don’t hold you breath…..DE is certainly not our biggest need, and it’s not a stellar crop for DL next year…..IMO…The order looks like this:

OL—- lacking any legit backups & Columbo may exit.
ILB -— Burnett is FA, Barbie da BUST, and Zack can’t play forever
WR—— Hurd is FA, Crayton is no #2
SS—— Roy will be gone, Hamlin is no FS, KD was cut for a reason
NT—- Tank is a FA, Ratliff should be at DE, no depth behind that
OLB—- Spencer is injury prone, and absolutely NOBODY behind him.
DE—— umm…Spears may move, Canty may move, Hatcher & Bowen back ups
QB——This is BJ’s last hurray…need to groom somebody to take out Bollinger

You mean FS, right?

Hamlin is better suited at SS, so they need someone at FS. I think it’s going to be Anthony Henry at FS next year, though. I would rather see a DT than a DE, so that Ratliff can move to DE and continue to be a beast there. Tank obviously is not cut out for the 3-4. We need a big, athletic NT. It’s like the big thing about different 300 pounders being built differently. We need one of the ones that are built like a fire hydrant to jam up the middle and demand double teams. I’m not Mel Kiper, so I don’t know if anyone like that will be available or even exists.

by Baked Potato Soup on Oct 4, 2008 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

your correct....Hamlin should be a SS..Roy should be cut after this season.

We should be looking to draft a true SS to groom behind Hamlin. William Moore of Missouri is on my wish list, but I see him going top 15 in next years draft.

Henry should be playing Free Safety right now, with Courney Brown and Pat Watkins playing behind him and contributing on special teams

Henry can’t play man, and Newman is still struggling with a groin.

Adam Jones should be starting at Newman’s left CB spot, Move Henry to FS, and have Jenkins take over at right CB, and Scandrick splitting time with a clearly struggling Newman at the slot CB position….Play Man to Man with a cover 2 deep zone, and rush 6…….Stewart needs to step up the heat………

Hatcher has made more plays as a back up

than Spears has as a starter this season. Sure, he hasn’t been great, but he has made plays in a limited role. I think Hatcher is going to see increased playing time as the season goes along, especially if Spears continues to be a no show. I agree we need to draft a DE in next years draft.

WR quality on the team

Stanback needs to be active before anything

I don’t think he will be on the team next year, but I’m not getting into that again. Well see, but as of right now he will be inactive more than active once again this year. He is a PS player inactive on the 53 man roster. That’s all he is right now….

Rey Maualuga is NOT Lofa Tatupu...

Lofa makes his living off being incredibly intelligent on the field and knowing exactly where he needs to be on the field and positioning himself to make plays… There’s been quite a few indications that Maualuga is dumb as dirt and free-lances way too much… Physically he’s a stud, but he can’t cover and he’s always looked out of control to me on the football field…

Brandon Spikes is the cream of the crop at ILB…

Hello

I thought you would never ask. I love the draft almost as much as the season. I think that if the right receiver falls to us we’ve gotta take him. No pressure to rush him along, gotta brace for the post T.O. era.

I also think it is time to take a big time OT. Columbo may not be re-signed, and Flozell is 32. If we draft a guy high next season, he can play the right side until Flozell hangs up the spikes.

by Carl Shelton (GloryDayz88) on Oct 2, 2008 10:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Columbo will be re-signed

I always thought he’d be the one let go, but I’ve looked at him closer this year, and he earns his paycheck on every play. I always thought it’d be him or Canty, and with Canty’s lackluster play so far, Columbo’s chances of sticking around have jumped.

Columbo’s a mauler, and we need him. That said, I’m all for drafting an OT early.

31 teams may dream of the Superbowl but only one team, the Dallas Cowboys, expect it.

by accidental innuendo on Oct 4, 2008 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh I didnt say he didnt deserve it.

He’s the most consistent guy on the line. You just have to figure they wont re-sign everybody.

by Carl Shelton (GloryDayz88) on Oct 4, 2008 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to say OL, ILB, DL, and WR

in that order, though like Glory said, if the right receiver falls to us earlier, we should take him. I think OL is the biggest need with the age of Flo, Columbo’s contract coming up, and the poor back-ups that we’ve got on the team. Next ILB as Carpenter will never amount to much in this scheme and Zach probably doesn’t have much time left. Also, Burnett is a FA after his season. Finally a D-lineman would be really nice. Canty is up this year and who knows if we can afford to resign him. I think Spears will be gone at the end of his contract and I’m not sure that Hatcher or Bowen can be solid 3 down linemen. NT or DE will be fine and then just move Ratliff wherever we need to.

+1

I’d love to get Duke Robinson OG Oklahoma, if possible. But Herman Johnson OG LSU could be a beast as well.

Then there are a few OT’s that look good and could be there at the bottom of the 1st round.

ILB would be my next want. Somebody that can replace Thomas when he decides to retire.

At DE, we do have Dixon on the PS, he might turn out to be a gem. Plus I still like Hatch to make progress.
and I think Spears is still under contract until 2010.
