Witten Fractured ribs
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3668778
Cowboys Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten has learned that medical tests performed Monday revealed he suffered a fractured rib, according to team sources.
But the team's leading receiver refuses to rule himself out of Sunday's NFC East showdown against the New York Giants and has informed the coaching staff he will try to play through the injury.
When asked his prognosis, Witten said only: "It's not great."

Witten's a badass
Simply put. He’s one of the toughest players of the league, and people have played through this before. I have full confidence he’ll be on the field sunday, especially with the offense debilitated as it is.

I would rather see Witten sit this week or at least play a limited role
so that he’ll have this and the bye week to heal. Really, how much will Brad be passing to him? Is it worth it if he cracks his ribs even further by landing on the ball or taking a heavy shot like he often does.
Martellus looks ready (pass-catching wise) and Tony Curtis is a valuable blocker. Regardless of whether Witten plays or not, these guys should play more.

And the hits just keep on comin'
As much as I hate to see this recent spate of injuries… maybe it’s this kind of so-called adversity that keeps this team focused, motivated, and determined to prove the doubters wrong!!!
I had a bad feeling about J-Dub’s rib injury.
Hopefully, he’ll be back after the bye week and ready to play against the hated ’Skins.

my question is
why did his x-rays come back negative during the game? Seems strange.

They may have done a bone scan or a MRI
They are both more sensitive to hairline fractures

how long do cracked ribs take to heal?
thats one injury I’ve never had thankfully, are they like regular fractures with a 5-6 week healing period?

Broken ribs can take a few weeks (2-3) to heal
It also depends on how much pain you can take because everytime you breathe in and out it hurts. Nevermind how much it’d hurt to get hit there… I’ve broken 3 ribs and you can sleep on them either…
That timeline also depends on how “fractured” they are too

Getting open won't be the problem with Martellus.
We would miss Witten’s blocking more then anything.

I expect Tellus to get open often....

Dr. Mullen is on the money...
And take this from a guy who has had broken ribs…It’s the worst, most painful fracture there is…This will surely challenge Wittens threshold for pain for a very long time…This doesn’t heal overnight. or in 6-8 weeks……If fact, this is pain that will linger for a few seasons, or even longer…just the other day i turned in an akward way, and still felt the affects of cracked ribs from 22 years ago……I wish him all the luck in the world, but TE is a position that takes monsterous hits to the ribs on a daily basis..

Sit him this week
He is way to valuable in the long run to risk in an almost certain defeat this week.

+1
I’d rather see Witten sit and give it a change to heal a bit. Break that rib and he could be out for a significant period of time. Let Bennett get some more playing time, he didn’t look too bad against the Bucs.

I'm all for Witten sitting but
he just seems to be one of those dudes that doesn’t ever ever ever wanna come out of a game, let alone sit an entire one out.

The day I knew Witt was the most awesomest TE ever
was in his rookie year against the Patriots when he stayed into play with a broken nose. That helped make that a respectful loss.
