The Romo Bandwagon - Join Me
I have hard nothing today - from Cowboys fans, media and haters alike - that Tony Romo is inconsistent, mistake prone and erratic. I decided to look at the numbers because it just appeared to me that the criticism is getting out of porpoertion to the supposed problem. This is what I see from the conductor's seat of the bandwagon...
Romo is:
3rd in the NFL in passing yards (the offense runs off him)
5th in passer rating (so much for "not all that")
Tied with Peyton Manning in interceptions (and only one more than the other rating leaders)
10th in passing percentage (so much for erractic and inaccurate)
Tied for second in TDs (and that's with Felix and MBIII carrying a load)
So what exactly is Tony Romo doing that has people falling off the wagon like free gin at an AA meeting?? All I can imagine is that (1) we have set the bar for him so high that with every passing game (pun intended) we expect perfection. And Tony is not that guy - not Steve Young, not Troy Aikman. He's more like Favre or McMahon. He'll take chances and by definition some won't pan out. But there's not another QB I want on my favorite team. And (2) He didn't come from USC or THE Ohio State University.

C'Mon Romo went to a Football Powerhouse
Sean Payton, Mike Shanahan, and Brad Childress all went to that school.

I've always been the first passenger dunk
and I’m never jumping off baby! Steve Maranucci of the NFL Network said today that Romo’s big plays far exceed his mistakes and that in reality, most of his INTs this season were not the result of poor decision making or poor throws, but just great defensive plays by the defender. He analyzed each one and he was right. He said Cowboys fans have absolutely nothing to worry about because he’s a big time playmaker who will make a lot more big time plays than mistakes.
And I’m pretty sure he knows 1,000 times more about football and QB play than any fan or blogger of this site.

I saw that
I also read the debate between Boomer and Troy and Troy said similar things. But I’m pretty sure the media knows more than Mooch or Troy about NFL QBs.

passenger?
Terry, i thought you were in front driving the thing, not to mention pimping the rims and turbo boosters…
did someone already call shotgun? :)
love Romo and his game – 2 criticisms mentioned below by Tom I agree with, but what an exciting time to be a fan!

I'm totally on board
Romo is the main man.
I do think there are 2 valid criticisms though.
1) Don’t force the ball in the redzone, I’m sure he knows this, but sometimes he seems to forget.
2) Protect the ball in the pocket and especially if you decide to run (just tuck that sucker), thought he had corrected this problem, but it’s reared it’s ugly head again.
Other than that, he needs to just keep on doing what he’s been doing, because it’s working.
Every diehard fan knows we haven’t had a guy this good since Aikman. The drought is finally over.

No doubt
And it’s not in the pocket that I mind. If you tuck the ball you can’t throw it. It’s when he runs that he needs to remember to carry it properly.
Yesterday’s pick was OK with me. It was a nice defenisve play. The fumble was a mistake, but he brought the team back to win. I have no idea what else people want from him.

And he learned from it, too, Dunk.
Did you notice how the next two times he ran, he tucked it tight while sliding?

On point, Tom.
I’ve beat this to death — and I’ll continue for as Romo is a Cowboy — but I’d much rather have #9 under center than the likes of Bledsoe, Testaverde, Henson, Carter, Wright, Hutchinson, and Leaf…
Our record with Tony Romo as our starting QB as compared to before is leaps and abounds above .500.
Romo is a winner, he’s a gamer, and he’s the leader of our vaunted O.

Count me on board,
there is no one I have faith in to lead the team down the field to a score they have to have other than romo (maybe brady).

I'm on!
Thanks for the stats to back it up.
I can understand the media because the Cowboys = ratings and BSPN haters lead the pack and feeds off whatever negativity they can manufacture.
But I really am baffled by how some fans buy into it, and take the few negative things and blow them totally out of proportion to the positive things and go into full on worry mode when it really isn’t justified.
I guess maybe it is just that expectations are so high.
He needs to fix his mental mistakes in ball security, especially in the red zone.
But overall he’s doing a great job and I have a ton of confidence that he’s going to make the plays needed to win, that’s he’s going to work like hell to try to improve himself with every game, and that he can lead us to the promised land. There are no guarantees in the NFL, but I also wouldn’t trade him for any other QB playing in the league today.

I am completely and totally on board
And also agree with AperfectStar on those 2 points above. I will be a Romo supporter till the end.
On a side note, I was talking to a guy this evening that I have talked Cowboys about before and always considered him a “real” fan as he always seemed to know his stuff. Well he starts talking about the Bengals game and said, “Man, Romo is just stinking it up. That’s why you just can’t trust guys that didn’t get drafted out of big schools.” I pretty much wrote him off at that point. Sounds like he’s been watching too much ESPN.

I really think that is at the hearty of some of it
People can’t make themselves believe that the American dream happens for NFL QBs – that a guy can come out of nowhere and succeed.

Tony Is My Man
He convinced me way back when with just a few seconds to go in a preseason game in Oakland, he audibled a quaterback sneak and got into the end zone for the winning touchdown. Anybody else remember that?

Same
He looked great in 3 games and has had a couple down games where he was still solid. Big deal. Romo <3
the preceding post was a great success.

Better when he moves...
Much has been said this year about Tony trying to emulate Tom Brady by limiting his movement in the pocket. Personally I think this is a mistake. Remember the line from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when they are auditioning to be guards for the gold shipment. Sundance is asked to shoot at a target and he misses. The mule skinner laughs at him and then Sundance says “Can I move? I am better when I move”. He then hits the target several times in succession.
I think Tony’s problem this year, and part of the reason he is feeling more pressure, is because he is more stationary in the pocket than last year. Tony is an instinctive player and much of his success has been attributed to his ability to avoid pressure, move around and extend plays.
Rather than try to emulate Brady I’d rather see him return to what made him a success last year and do a little more scrambling because I think he’s better when he moves.
The Red Ball Express will be rolling this year!

i think there has to be some balance
between moving and being still… during times when he has a clean pocket i certainly don’t want him to dance himself into a sack, but when he’s feeling heat he certainly needs to get moving. when to do which is a matter of experience and feel. i think it’s a testimony to his dedication that he’s taken time to work on a previous ‘weaker’ area (not that he was terrible or anything).
would those wanting Romo on the move more wish for more collapsing pockets? probably not. what about more designed roll outs? perhaps.
a side comment is that although Romo’s play-action maybe isn’t the best, i think he’s doing a good job of selling pass on delays/draws, and he sells strong side run well when setting up counter plays. several long runs came off counters yesterday – felix’s long TD run against GB was on a similar play. of course it’s the play call and scheme too but it’s something our offense has been doing well.

BulletBob hit the nail on the head right there....
That is what i’ve seen all season, and have been preaching it for a while now…….Tony needs to be Tony….move the pocket, roll outs, bootlegs, run when needed….It’s very similiar to when Michael Vick was continuelly scutinized for for not having pocket presense and leaving too early…He was forcing himself to stay in there to prove the nay sayers wrong, even though his performance deminished, and he was out of his comfort zone…..Tony appears to me to be uncomfortable, and it shows in his throws. They are being directed, and not thrown with proper touch or accuracy…I actually liked Tony more, and he performed better when he had “happy feet”….If Garrett can get back to moving the pocket like in games past, we’d see a more composed Romo…Don’t get me wrong, We have an o line that gives him plenty of time in the pocket, but it’s up to him to move out at the proper time….He’s pressing a bit now, anticipating pressure, rather than feeling pressure.(One of his greatest assets was/is his feel for pressure)…..I’ll let Scooby continue my thoughts below…btw nice post :-) right on the money there.

Right Now as we speak
The Media has Tony and our team Skewered and roasting over an open flame like an Armenian Shish-Kabob. But in reality, could this be a good thing for us? I think so, because we as fans right now would like nothing more than to see a convincing win with our defense playing a complete and dominating game. Having a strong game and winning convincingly against a strong Arizona team will go a long way to diffuse the flames of envy and jealousy that our adversaries and the hated media would like nothing more than to see engulf us and burn us to a crisp. You’ve got to know that they all would like to see us falter. It is truly time for us to have a little faith, and when all turns out well, all the Nay-sayers will be trying to jump on the bandwagon, and we won’t let them on!
PS- never knew that that Matt Mosely guy was such a jerk. reading his articles makes me want to have an intelligent debate with him (that’s not possible though, since he has no intelligence!)
