A More Balanced View

Random thoughts on America's Team and their 2008 campaign thus far;

Romo: not stepping into his throws, also seems to be throwing balls when he has his field of vision partially blocked...I wonder if this has something to do with his offseason commitment not to back up in the pocket when the guards and center get pushed back? His turnovers continue to be a huge concern to Cowboys Nation, but maybe you have to take the good with the bad? That all said, when Tony has had time and seen the field (and not felt compelled to force things to T.O.), he has been money.

RB's: the Smash and Dash combo has been as advertised. Barber has continued to run violently through defenders and Felix Jones is an early candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Deon Anderson has recovered nicely from last year's injury. I have no complaints about the performance of the backs.

O-Line: A bit of a mixed bag here. the interior linemen have not gotten the same push when compared to last year at this time. The revolving door at LG has obviously disrupted some of the chemistry there, but Gurode and Davis seem to be giving more ground in pass pro which is making Romo look more like Jim Everett. Hudson Houck needs to focus more on the interior guys in the next several weeks because the tackles have both played as well as 2007 or better. Noticeably, Flozell is having fewer false starts!

Receivers: Witten has really emerged as the new standard for NFL TE's. Well done, Jason! T.O. is still his unstoppable self and is faced with weekly double coverage and sometimes triple coverage. It's the #2 WR that continues to be a weak spot for Dallas. Having looked at the whole T.O. thing differently, I am not sure that he has EVER played opposite a player who can consistently break man press coverage for big plays over the top and make a defense pay for doubling him.  Heck, even Michael Irvin had some help in the form of Alvin Harper and others over the years. Crayton has not been able to create separation from teams' #2 CB's. If I were Jason Garrett, I'd spend a lot of time this week throwing deep balls to Miles Austin, who has breakaway speed and good height.

D-Line: Ratliff is playing well despite being out of position. He should play at DE, probably at Spears' spot. Note: in another post, I suggested Dallas trade Spears and a #1 to Detroit for Roy Williams. Would Dallas really lose that much with a starting line of Canty, Tank and Ratliff instead of Canty, Ratliff and Spears? Anyhow, Spears is underperforming and Canty has only shown flashes. Overall, this group is awful. Of all of the 3-4 defenses in the league, this may be the least productive 3.  Ugh.

LB's: Okay, this is going to get me in trouble with the stat freaks, but I'm going to say it anyway...DeMarcus Ware has not played up to expectations. His sacks have generally come in the 4th quarter and he has been swiping at and taking horrible angles instead of creating violent collisions with opposing QB's and displaying some aggression. He looks like a very quick, finesse-oriented pass rushing wussy. Okay, there! I said it and I feel much better. On the other side, Ellis is over the hill. Jerry, he's not a bad guy, let him go play DE in a 4-3 somewhere because he's been a good soldier through the years (albeit never played up to his draft position). Bradie James has been steady, but nothing more. On a high note, Zach Thomas has been the bright spot on this defense thus far, bar none. solid tackling, uncanny recognition skills and a real passion for the game. It's a beautiful thing to watch him play. He is the Bill Bates of this team.

DB's: I can't believe I am typing this, but surprisingly, Adam Jones has been the team's best CB so far. He's played man press coverage well and has been in position to make 3 (he dropped them all...ugh!) INT's so far. Henry looks stiff and worn out from various injuries. He was never known for his ability to flip his hips and turn to run with fast-twitch athletes anyway. Newman has been in and out and up and down, more down than up, obviously. I say he needs a new offseason workout regimen. Hamlin has been heady and prevented some deep balls while being his usual physical force. The revolving door at the other safety position has been hard on the backfield's chemistry and the communication on coverage duties has suffered. This is tough to comment on because the pass rush has been so poor, but even so, we've dropped too many INT's and played too soft in zones.

Specials: Folk has been awesome. What a great 6th round find! McBriar has been inconsistent except in clutch situations where he can be counted on to suck. Felix Jones has been a revelation, and just needs a bit more blocking in front of him to become one of the league's elite KR's. Adam Jones has been on the verge of breaking a couple but also has seen little space in front of him to create with. The coverage units have continued to underwhelm fans.

Coaching: what can I say here? I really, really, really want to find something good to say...but I can't. The team has played such uninspired football on both sides of the ball that it has most fans in an uproar. Great article in the S.T. about how Wade is NOT the guy to hold this team accountable and lead them to greatness. Jason Garrett looked like a rookie coordinator in the Redskins game, being outsmarted by Greg Blache at every turn. Brian Stewart is no Dom Capers, and that is our loss. I liken the fact that Bruce Read is still employed by Dallas to him robbing Jerry Jones at gunpoint every payday.

And there you have it. Please excuse the long-windedness, but I had to get it out. I'm one of those fans that cares less about the outcome of a game and how a fumble bounced into our hands or how we recovered a miracle onsides kick to win a game and more about how we show up and play week in and week out with passion, fire and intensity, because in the end, that creates momentum that a team can build on. That is a force that can be harnessed into postseason success. Mediocrity can be very easily disguised by minor success, but I've seen greatness. I saw it in the 70's with Landry and in the 90's with Jimmy. Thus far in 2008, I haven't seen it and I'm not satisfied. What bothers me is that it seems many of the fans, players and coaches are...

Ware hasn't underperformed

He’s been utterly engulfed by blockers. Frankly, It’s amazing he’s done as well as the stats indicate with the amount of protection teams are employing to stop him alone.
Look at Jared Allen in Minnesota. Teams are used to playing max-protect because they have a fearsome front line, and suddenly KC’s sack master is no longer the unstoppable force he looked like last year. Ware makes this team much better with his mere presence; tack on the productivity and he’s arguably been the best pass-rusher in football.
I do agree about the line’s lack of interior push, but they’re doing quite a fine job in pass protection. It seems like more often than not the big-name O-line coaches stress keeping the QB upright more than creating running lanes, and if this is the case Hud has been as advertised.
As much of a rational (translate:stat freak) fan as I am, I continue to be underwhelmed by the year Romo’s having. I’m still a believer, but the interceptions need to stop and I can’t believe Crayton has regressed this much in such a short span. Witten’s a phenomenal player and my very favorite Cowboy, but I think It’s very possible that Tony’s overrelying on his security blanket.

Pretty clearly the first time he has ever looked at a web site. "And there are readers' comments at the bottom! And advertisements for products! And best of all, I won a free iPod!"

Crayton isn't under performing either...

He’s third on the team in catches, and on track to catch 48 over the season, and 4 TD’s. That is doing his job. I’m sick of everybody bagging on Crayton like he hasn’t done anything. Didn’t he put the game out of reach last week while simultaneously pulling everybody darling Austin’s bacon out of the fire? Everyone here has unrealistic expectations of the #2 receiver, and your disrespect of Crayton is deplorable. Last year he had 50 catches, 7TD’s, and 750 yards. Go look into Cowboys history and you find me a more productive #2 receiver, go ahead I’ll wait.

Now that I’ve made my point about Crayton, let’s move on.

Everybody has purely lost their minds about the Cowboys. It’s really pitiful to watch all these otherwise intelligent fans devolve into defeated, finger pointing, ESPN watching morons. If we can win while playing this bad, then just imagine how good it will be when things come together.

My suggestion, everybody chill, and let the Boys work things out. This incessant need to “fix blame” is not helping.

Don’t you know that TJ Whosyourmama is coming to Dallas next season? Do you know what that means? Crayton is going bye-bye…

As funny as that commercial is...

…i’ve been reading that the Niners are looking at TJ and Roy Williams Motown. SF seems to be attempting to do what SD did last year when the Bolts traded with Miami to get WR-Chris Chambers.

I hope that doesn’t happen.

A. I CAN’T STAND THE 49ERS.

B. I’d Love For Dallas to have Whosyourmama…

We are very lucky

In that, A LOT of players grew up watching Cowboy football. Because of that, many people genuinely want to play for Dallas. Correct me if I’m wrong was TJ was one of those guys…

Yes!!!

TJ admitted growing up as a Cowboy fan, Carson was also to admit this as well. And that is why i see TJ coming to Dallas next season if Jerry doesn’t make a move for Det’s R. Williams in the next week.

Crayton doing his job

Actually, Crayton is not doing his job. Assuming your extrapolation is correct (I haven’t checked) then 48 catches for four TD’s is poor production for a starting wide receiver that has everything stacked in his favor. TO draws double coverage on nearly every play – if he doesn’t, then Witten does. The defense has to play the run honest or MB3 and Felix will make them pay. The odd man out is the #2WR – Crayton sees single coverage on every play.

Our guy as the #2 wr has to do two things: (1) rack up big production because it is becoming very apparent that teams will not let TO beat them; and (2) provide a speed threat that vertically stretches the field and will open things up more for TO and Witten. Crayton does neither, plain and simple. I think Miles Austin should replace Crayton as the starting #2 wr this Sunday. Austin would immediately provide that vertical stretch, and as he gains valuable experience over the next 7-8 weeks, he has the potential to become a real force come December and playoff time.

Finally, I don’t think bloggers on this site disrespect Crayton. Many just recognize him for what he is: a #3 wide receiver who has significant value to the team, but also one that holds us back offensively when he starts. That’s not disrespecting – its just understanding and accepting reality.

I'm still waiting...

for you to bring me the name of that better Cowboys #2, so far I see lots of opinion, but not much else. In his best year Alvin Harper caught only 38 passes. The main reason Crayton doesn’t see as many plays is because there is TO, and Witten…Barber, and Jones. These guy attract a lot of attention. Against the Skins Crayton caught 7 passes, as many as Witten or Owens. Crayton is only 3 catches behind TO…with 1/3 the opportunities to be involved. Crayton is an excellent blocker, and has decent hands.

Crayton was in the top ten among #2 receivers last year. His number stacked up against all the other #2 receivers numbers, he is better than most….that is a fact. No he isn’t blazing fast, and yes he makes irritating drops now and again(let me remind you TO led the NFL last year in dropped passes). Patrick Crayton is never going to be loved by any Dallas fan(except me) until we win the Super Bowl. I’m sure everyone here is casting a stink-eye at him for his play-off drops.

1. how is Crayton going to rack up big numbers when he see maybe 6 passes a game(avg)?

2. All the speed in the world won’t break TO out of double coverage, Witten seems to keep getting open no matter what. I saw Austin step on his dick last Sunday in a critical moment last Sunday, and guess who saved the day? I think Crayton is still better than Austin, all the speed in the world didn’t help him hold on to the ball.

It’s not that Austin is bad, he’s just getting more opportunities this year. Austin has great speed, and he adds a whole new element to the passing game, but this year Crayton is still better. Next year I see Austin probably starting, but he still developing; his blocking in particular. Have you ever noticed how many big runs Crayton throws key blocks on?

To wrap this up, I think a LOT of folk disrespect PC, and it’s not right. He stepped up his game last year when Terry Glenn went down, and had a pretty good year. No one recognizes what he brings with him with the few opportunities he gets, instead everyone focuses on what he’s not. You downplay any good thing he does example;no mention of his great catch against Cincinnati, while simultaneously praising the guy who the pass was thrown to AND DIDN’T CATCH IT! If that ain’t disrespect, I don’t know what is. For some notion that stretch will magically cure the Cowboys ills you’ll gladly throw Patrick Crayton under the bus. Just because you perceive Crayton’s lack of burning speed the woe to the Cowboys offense don’t make it reality. Redball is like Novocaine, give it time, and it will work, the league has just built up a tolerance…that’s all.

Harper - A Great Example

I’ll try one more time.

It isn’t that I am disrespecting Crayton. Yes, last season he put up good numbers. While it has only been five games, he isn’t tracking to have those numbers again. I see Crayton’s numbers as a product of the system, not a product of his talent. In other words, in this high-powered offense I think there are lots of guys who could put up number similar to Crayton’s

You raised Alvin Harper – I think Alvin Harper provides an excellent example of the point I’m trying to make. Harper never put up big numbers – but he was always a threat to stretch the field, a threat to take it to the house on any play – a threat that opponents respected. I don’t see Crayton as being that type of guy. He is a mousy possession-type receiver that is effective at moving the chains. That’s what I’m looking for with a #3 wr. If I can’t have the proverbial ‘two #1’s’, then I want a home run hitter as my #2, someone the defense feels they need to account for on every play. I think Miles Austin has a chance to be that type of guy – I know Crayton never will be.

I see very little downside with taking Crayton out of the starting lineup. Would the offense suffer? I say the chances of that are unlikely. However, I do see a huge possible upside to throwing Miles Austin into the mix right now – namely that he can be an Alvin Harper-type-threat by the time December and the playoffs roll around.

You did raise one point that I agree with and should be duly noted: Crayton is a very good blocker and he does give max effort on every play.

They were open, Tony gets locked in…

There were several times the fullback/ TE out of the backfield was wide open in the flat.. I mean wide open..

I remember hearing discussion on the BTB about TJ Hous favorite team as a kid, it is the COWBOYS.. The said it during the game when I was watching the replay..

Golden Richards even better...

I see what you’re saying…

As far as production goes so far, TO is on track for only 60(and 20TD’s) catches while Witten is looking at 112(but only 8TD’s). I’m saying that what Crayton offers steady while not spectacular production and excellent blocking is something we need more than down field “stretch”. TO on deep crosses always runs to PC because he knows they’ll get their clock cleaned. The system doesn’t require Crayton to be a deep threat, that’s what the 3-Wide set,and Austin Miles are for.

PC a mousy receiver?! Dude have you seen his guns? Ask Fred Smoot(who got smote by PC) if he thinks Crayton is “mousy”. You want two #1’s and that’s something PC ain’t ever gonna be. He’s is over-achieving now as a #2. I recognize he is limited, and given the cruel nature of the NFL realistically only has another 3 years shelf-life. Want for what you want in the off season, we have to win with what we got, and what we got is Patrick Crayton, and that’s not bad.

I agree Miles is a deep threat guy, but he hasn’t proven particularly invulnerable. I don’t think he’s ready for the job full time, but Crayton is ready now. Next year Crayton will be lucky if he’s the #4, Hurd and Stanback are developing fast. There is no valid reason to bench Crayton in this offense, Austin can still play in a lot of packages, but he’s not a starter yet.

Who caught the final touchdown against Buffalo last year? those that think PC doesn’t make big plays just have short term memory problems, you’re seeing what you want to see. He’s earned his spot, and should be recognized as a good and valuable player.

I agree with a lot of that analysis.

But I disagree about Ware. I think if the DL were doing better, he would be his usual unstoppable self. As it is now, he’s the only guy that consistently gets pressure, except Ratliff in the 4 man line. Teams just figured out that they don’t really need to double up on any of our DL, so they can tee off on Ware instead. I also think Anthony Henry has not played poorly, and a lot of the secondary inconsistencies are due to not working together long enough yet/injuries, and scheme. Every zone has open spots if there is no pressure on the QB.

Hey Baked....you might wanna reply all five games....cuz

Henry has surely played poorly…to the point where he should be benched or moved over to FS immediately………..He’s missing tackles consistantly, lost or burned in most coverages, and flat out stinking up the joint….I’m not quite sure of what you’ve been watching, but i’ve seen him get burned more than once in every single game they’ve played…..I say Adam Jones and Mike Jenkins should be our starting CB’s, with Orlando Scandrick playing the slot (while Newman recovers)….Have them all play up at the line in press coverage….There would vast improvement in our defensive production…..Henry has played himself out of a starting job…imo

Disagree with 2 points

First one, Ware is playing great, I don’t get where this dumb rumor started, but let’s squelch it now. It’s ridiculous. He gets no help from Ellis or Spencer and still has to be taken into account by the opponents offense every time he’s on the field. He’s a beast.

Second, Hamlin has certainly not been playing up to the level he played at last season. Captain of the secondary is not playing very well right now.

I do agree on 2 points.

First, the running game is as advertised, can take over a game. I love it.

Second, Witten is the best player at his position in the entire NFL. There is no one close. He’s separated himself from the rest of the TE’s by a noticeable margin. I think he could be our team’s MVP right now.

The Pressure of our pass D

Has been non existent- as far as I can remember. Isn’t that why we got some CB’s, to alleviate that problem? I agree, BoyzRback, Jenkins and Pac are our pressure DB’s, and Scandrick is doing fine. When Newman comes back from injury, and if they keep Henry out there, are you gonna be satisfied seeing the old “10 yards back off the reciever” waltz that has been going on for the longest time? I’m surprised we haven’t lost more games because of it.

Who were our opponents last year in the first five games?

The gints, 1-15 miami, chicago (rex grossman), st louis, and buffalo. So one team that was pretty good and an avg team. The other 3 were esentially bottom feeders last year, TO’s come in bunches and this team has missed some opportunities this year. This year we have played better teams and have 1/3 the amout of TO’s, so it is not as good as last year but you cannot say that the team faced the same caliber of opponents.

Well, I Told You All the Ware Thing Would Be Controversial

I don’t buy the Ware apologists’ comments that he’s “playing great” or “getting engulfed by double teams” or “he’s getting no help”. That’s BS crybaby stuff and great players play great despite their situation. Watch the games more closely. The Skins didn’t chip him, he just didn’t get there. McNabb had 6+ seconds on a play where DeMarcus overplayed him (not like he hasn’t done it before with McNabb). And to make matters worse, he had 5 different opportunities to NAIL Palmer last week and wussed it. Sorry, but he’s been mediocre and it just seems like he’s out there on the field humming “head, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes” instead of playing nasty and setting the tone on the field for the Defense.

If you watch Ware closely, he is avoiding the big, bone-crushing hits that other pass-rushing OLB’s love to deliver. I counted 9 opportunities to get to the passer in the last 4 games (i will review the 5th next week) where he took a terrible angle that was more toward the ball and not the QB’s center mass. Wussage…

Everyone is complaining about the pass rush. Well, right now, Ware has to BE the Dallas pass rush and make the Spencers and the Ellises around him better. I don’t care if he causes a strip and recovery. I want to see him use his speed to cause some pain. So let’s stop making excuses for players who need to elevate their play and aggression.

Where have you gone, Charles Haley?

+1....He hasn't played to his abilities..

and NO, he isn’t double teamed on every pass play….To his defense though, teams have the blueprint to beat our pass rush, (3 step drops and fire to wide open underneath WR’s and TE’s) cuz we are playing a soft zone, in our traditional 7-9 yards off the line, and have yet to adjust……….Charles Haley couldn’t even do damage with this scheme playing behind him…Of course you never saw Sanders or Smith playing that far off the receivers.

I think he’s a Pro Bowl NT right now. Hands down the best player on our defense so far.

Tank has been playing hurt, Spears has been playing far superior to what he has in the past, and you want to trade Spears?

Sorry but Spears is too valuable to trade for a WR. Especially with Tank hurt. If Tank reinjures that ankle worse, then we start Hatcher at DE and Rat back at NT? No thank you.

by mhuff13 on Oct 8, 2008 3:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It's not about some myopic view of how a single player is doing this year vs. prior years

It’s about whether we can get value this season in a trade for a player that probably won’t be with the team next year. No doubt he has played better, but there’s no way Dallas re-signs Spears. Having watched him, he now looks to be more of 4-3 DT than a base end in our 3-4.

by 5Blings on Oct 9, 2008 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

I think he will be resigned, especially if he continues to play like this.

Don’t forget that Tank is also a free agent. And he hasn’t been playing too good, or has been playing hurt.

Once again, we trade Spears…are you comfortable with Hatcher starting at DE? Because I’m not.

by mhuff13 on Oct 9, 2008 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm more comfortable...

going out and getting a journeyman to play base end and rotate with Hatcher than trying to pay Spears the big money he will want and missing out on signing a complementary speed WR or re-signing Columbo/Ware to extensions. In this league, you have to pay the special players and dump the Spears and Carpenters of the world.

Nope, Spears is a goner.

I don't think Spears will want big money.

I’d be willing to bet he’ll stay for a price that will still allow us to give Ware his monster extension, sign Columbo, and sign Whosyourmama or Roy.

get him out of here. Trade him to Miami in the off season for a Happy Meal….

And another thing, Spears is signed through 2010

Why the hell would we trade him, with his relatively cheap contract, to sign someone else for more money?

Just makes no sense.

by mhuff13 on Oct 10, 2008 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because he sucks

to put it mildly. Just because his salary is low doesn’t mean we have to keep him. Thank goodness we are not handcuffed to him like some other players on this team.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

by Boyzfan94 on Oct 10, 2008 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Last year I would have agreed with you

This year he’s been playing alot better.

Once again, he’s cheap. We trade him, we either have to sign a DE (which hurts us trying to resign Ware, Columbo, Canty, Tank, and others). Or go with Hatcher at DE? Or move Rat, and let Tank play NT. Then, who backs up Tank?

I just think, and I’d be willing to bet Jerry thinks the same, that Spears is good enough at his salary to keep at least through the end of his contract.

by mhuff13 on Oct 10, 2008 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where's the proof?

No sacks? little pressure. Looks to be the same player as last season. Our run defense is worse than last year and some of that might be his fault.

If he is here past this year he will be a backup, not a starter. We have to find someone better. Whether that’s Hatcher, Ratliff or another not on this team a change needs to happen.

i agree with mhuff....Spears plays through the '10 season....

he’s not going anywhere with his low salary…I don’t see him being resigned as of right now…..but I still think there is hope he will switch to NT, and Rat will take over his DE spot….Hatcher is not better than Spears, and Canty hasn’t exactly outplayed him either…He’s safe for the next few seasons…..btw….Our run defense is fairly stellar…giving up 3.9 ypc…I’ll take that anytime…

Tank is the one that's been invisible

Minus the forced fumble on the Cinci RB, he has really been a disappointment after all the off-season hype. I know he’s got a bad ankle, but he needs to get it going if he wants to be re-signed. Right now he’s not performing like a guy fighting for a new contract. Great attitude is not enough.

I think Spears has played better this year and whatever happens to him will be tied to what happens to Tank following this season.

Plus we have a wildcard in Marcus Dixon on the farm team.

What player are you watching???

The imposter that you saw in preseason or the real Spears we have seen for the past 5 weeks. He is playing the same tired way he has since being here. No sacks, no pressure, get’s pushed around.. same tired Spears. No thanks….Get him out of here in the off season and replace him with Ratliff or Hatcher. Ratliff has been playing well at NT, but not lights out. Not a pro bowl NT by any means. He would be better served as a DE with his speed and quickness. We need a wide load NT to stuff the run to go along with Tanks quickness.

TO did get to play with Terry Glenn for a season

And he was about as good as anyone in football the last 15 years doing this:

Having looked at the whole T.O. thing differently, I am not sure that he has EVER played opposite a player who can consistently break man press coverage for big plays over the top and make a defense pay for doubling him.

Yea but not with a decent QB

Part of a season with Bledsoe, and the rest of the season with basically a rookie.

Give him someone like that now that Romo isn’t so green and wow…

+1

There was a 3 -year period (98-00) where Rice was in his twilight, yet still very productive in the West Coast offense. The best year being 1998, where Rice caught 82 with 9 TD’s and T.O. caught 67 and 14 TD’s. Having said that, Rice wasn’t a speed guy and T.O. was the #2 until 2000 when Garcia took over at QB, so I am lobbying hard for Dallas to go find a true burner, a la Lee Evans, Santana Moss, Roy Williams, etc., opposite him.

it tough as a QB to step into throws

and see down the field when the OL is pushed back in his face. I think his committment to stand tall in the pocket, ala Brady, has hurt him in this regard.

I agree

Throwing on the run, out of the pocket, was when he was most effective. I remember teams gameplanning last year to keep Tony IN the pocket. How often do you hear that…

It's easy to stand tall when you're Brady

He is 6’4"+ and most of his linemen are about the same height.

Tony is 6’2" and he has Flo at 6’7", Bigg at 6’6" and Colombo at 6’8". That was apparent in Mooch’s NFLTA highlight reel on Romo’s miscues.

Tony will have to step back a bit in order to see the field better.

yeah...his first called roll out all season...glad Garrett is resorting back to what got Tony Romo on the highlight films to begin with....

The guy needs to be moving…..he’s unstoppable out in space, with clear vision of the field….His first season, they ran it every game, and then teams forced him from going to his right (NO game) ….then still ran a bit of it last season……this season, Garrett and Romo have been trying to force feed this “stand tall in the pocket” nonsense……go back to what brought you here…i say……roll outs, bootlegs, etc…….If nothings there…..Run Tony Run…..which he’s very good at…and would completely blow up defensive assignments….

I'm not liking the defensive line setup

The more and more I think about it Ratliff needs to replace Spears. Ratliff plays good at NT, but in the long run he would be more effective as a DE. We need more speed and quickness on that side. If we had it, Ellis would probably be more effective, because right now he is not as dominate as he was last year. Call it age, underperforming, Spears playing next to him, whatever. I think Ratliff along with Ellis and Spencer would be better. In the off season I would suggest drafting a wide body NT 330-340 lbs. to rotate with Tank or even moving Spears at NT permnatly to rotate with Tank. Next years starting lineup should be Spencer OLB, Ratliff DE, Tank NT, Canty DE, Ware OLB. That would be my optimal 2009 lineup. A change needs to be made, hopefully sooner than 2009.

I don’t know if he’s Pro-Bowl level, but Rat’s clearly playing better than any of our other linemen.

I’m still hoping Canty takes the next step so we can justify keeping him. 6’7 304 lbs and 25, but already has 3 seasons as a starter. I’d hate to watch him leave and become the next Seymour on another team.

fanposts

So sick of these inaccurate fanposts. Dallas goes further then this season. Iwill post a true analysis later this week. In the meantime to elaborate on some of your posts.
1. Crayton only does crossing patterns.
2. Ware sometimes seems tired. We should have kept walden. Justin ROgers only
     plays special teams.
3.Let’s look at Wade’ s coaching stops(later post).
4. Let’s put Greg Ellis at defensive end, he’ s too slow wherhe’s at now.
5. Zach should captain the defense. Bradie doesn’t have a clue.
6. Who gets these guys fired up.

Like I said earlier I will do a coach, good cowboy bad cowboy post later this week, I’m still getting my information together.
