Got Questions for the Arizona Cardinals?
Hey Blogging the Boys,
Cgolden from Revenge of the Birds here. In an effort to maximize community interaction between ROTB and you guys at BTB this week, Dave and I have decided to cross-promote by throwing up a FanPost so that you, devout fans of the Boys, can get any and all questions answered about the Arizona Cardinals (and vice versa over at ROTB).
So I'm here to answer your questions - and I expect a few ROTB-ers will migrate over to discuss the upcoming Cowboys/Cardinals game as well. Want to know what whether you'll get the team that allowed the Jets to crush them or the team that drilled the Bills? Curious about the Cardinals' injury situation? I may not be the dali-lama but I'll do my best to shoot it to you straight. Anything you got, fire away - I'm here to share and learn. Let's do this up, Blogging the Boys.
I'm looking forward to an entertaining Cardinals/Boys game this weekend. Should be fun.

Curious about the Cardinals’ injury situation?
Who do you have nursing injuries or out?
Our secondary is all banged up, not good for a team who excels in the throwing the football.

AZ Injuries
There are several guys who could or could not play, but I don’t think anyone has been officially ruled out yet. We’ll know more tomorrow or Friday but for now the big names with question marks are:
Boldin – (has to be doubtful at best)
Roderick Hood – (starting CB – strained groin vs. Bills & was “very sore” at the beginning of the week)
Bertrand Berry (missed last two games but has to be questionable at best)
Adrian Wilson (played on limited basis against Bills but should be closer to full speed by Sunday)
That’s all of the top of my head but if there are any new names when the report comes out today, I’ll update.

You never like to see a player injured
Especially one that I want on my team, but if they had Boldin on the field, we’d be in some trouble…

Wilson usually plays well against Dallas
And Berry’s an effective speed-rushing DE who could cause problems…

I know this doesn't have much to do with this week's game
But what has been happening with the Boldin situation and him wanting to be traded? It was pretty big news right before the start of the season, but I haven’t heard anything lately. Has the situation been resolved and are they expecting to renew his contract? Or will he be traded this off-season?

Q
I don’t know what will happen after this season but for now it seems like everyone is just ignoring the 1,000 pound elephant in the corner. Q has vowed to play out the season without causing a big stink and I imagine we’ll start the standoff once the Cardinals’ season is over. As far as whether or not he’ll sign with the Cardinals, I honestly don’t have any idea. The Cardinals will at least make an attempt to re-do is deal, even if it is a feeble one. If it’s apparent pretty quickly that the two sides can’t come together, he’s got to be traded. Both sides can’t go through the 2009 season with this hanging over their heads. As far as when the trade would go down, I personally hope it’s before the draft but your guess is as good as mine.

Pass Rush
How is Arizona doing in the pass rush department?

pass rush
The Cardinals D is tied for third in the league with 15 sacks but it nine of their sacks have come in two games (BUF & SF). For whatever reason, the defensive game plan didn’t involve very much blitzing in the other three games, especially the WAS and NYJ games. With the game being at home though, I’d bet that the game plan will be pretty aggressive. The best pass rusher has been Travis LaBoy (4 sacks) but if Bertrand Berry (3 sacks in 3 games) returns to the lineup, the pass rush could be even better.

O Line
How’s AZ’s line doing without Bigg? who have they plugged in his place and do you think AZ would have kept Bigg as a guard instead of a tackle? If they did, would the team be better off than they are now or worse – taking into account talent but also salary cap, etc.

OL
Hindsight is 20/20 so I’m sure if they’d have know he could be a dominant Pro Bowl guard, they’d have tried to keep him. As far as the current OL, it’s average. Nothing special but nothing terrible either. Wayne Gandy has been a great free agent signing, for the money, at LT and Levi Brown is a developing second year player at RT. Brown got thoroughly abused in the Jets game so Greg Ellis might have a big game. At guards, we’ve got a young kid at RG, Deuce Lutui, who’s been on the verge of losing his job since camp, and LG is Reggie Wells who is solid but unspectacular. At center, Lyle Sendlein is playing for the injured Al Johnson (remember him), but the drop off is less than you’d expect considering that there was some talk of Sendlein pushing AJ for his job in camp. He’s young and had trouble against Kris Jenkins in New York so Jay Ratliff could give him a tough game.

Well, Average Is Better
Than what it was for years in Arizona, where it usually was really bad. With the skill players the Birds have, even an average offensive line makes them dangerous.
Thanks for the info. I’d been curious how they were playing this year.

NYJ
How did Favre throw for 6 TD’s?

No excuses
The defense played horrible, they were stuck with a short field several times but they did very little to slow Farve down.

your thoughts on
Warner vs. Leinart? how long can the old guy get it done? his play has been pretty amazing for the most part. Is Leinart the man for the future or are the Cards thinking of bringing in someone else?
James vs. Hightower? New guy seems good – all i see are his stats – haven’t caught any games. Is he the future RB? style of running – power/slasher/speedster? receiving threat? Is Edge still the dual threat weapon he was in his heyday?
by Scoobay on Oct 8, 2008 4:39 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
QB – Warner’s the man right obviously, he’s been really good so far. We’ll see what happens next year, he’s a free agent and there are some rumors that he plans to retire after the season. Leinart will get another chance to be ‘the guy’ for the Cardinals. He had a good camp and preseason but one really bad half led to him losing the job. He’s still got the talent to be a decent starter in the this league, IMO.
RB – There may not be a more popular player than Tim Hightower in AZ right now. Most of us hope that it’s at least a 50/50 split for playing time by the end of the season and that Edge is released after the season. Interestingly enough, the Cardinals RB coach used to be in Dallas and was MB3’s coach. The coach started comparing him to MB3 on draft day and hasn’t stopped since. He’s a tough runner with a good burst but lacks top end speed. As for Edge, he’s a threat to turn a big pass or a big run into a 9 yard gain everytime he touches the ball. He’s slowing down and while he may turn a one yard gain into four on a regular basis, he may never run for 20 yards again in his career.

lol
isn’t there a madden quote about Leroy Hoard similar to that?
you need 1 yard, he’ll get you three – you need five yards, he’ll get you three. :)

if there isn't there should be
That’s better than any scouting report that I can come up with for Edge

This is going to be a painful game for me to watch
I love my boys but as it turns out I have Warner as my starting QB in fantasy along with the Cowboys D. You can imagine how utterly confused and conflicted I’ll be. I guess the best I can hope for is a big time shootout with Warner throwing for 400 yards, 5 TD’s, and 5 interceptions with a final score of 38-35 COWBOYS!
Then I’m going to have to spend the rest of the week wondering why the Cowboys D sucks so bad. Oh my freaking head!

What does Dallas have to do to disrupt Whisenhunt's quick-hitting passing game?
Should Dallas pinch up the CB’s and try to push the WR’s off of their routes while blitzing or lay back and try to disguise their coverages?

Ahh Bling
How I wish we would pinch up the CB’s and try to push the WR’s off their routes…..
Stewart would have to get fired before Sunday for that to happen…

physical
Getting physical with the Cardinals receivers could be pretty effective. One of the knocks on Fitz’s game has been his lack of physicality, especially for his size. He worked hard in the off season to get stronger but I can’t remember him getting really tested yet this year. It could work even better on Steve Breaston (#2 if Q is out) because he’s a small (6’0 189), speed WR who’s worked mostly out of the slot.
by cgolden on Oct 9, 2008 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cgolden, admittedly I don't know much about the depth of the Cards
Assuming Boldin is out, and we gameplan to stop Fitz…what other weapons could hurt us in the short passing game.
We all know Edge used to be great out of the backfield, but is he still? And what about your other receivers, the other RB, and TE?
It seems other than a few plays, we have been good against the deep pass and weak against the short passing game. Which then opens up for 1 shot deep, like Desean Jackson did.
Thanks.

everyone not named Fitz
Other WRs – Steve Breaston steps into Q’s spot and he’s a young, developing player but he’s explosive. He was just a returner last year (his rookie season) but he’s made great strides as a receiver. If you guys do game plan to take away Fitz, Breaston is the next guy in line. As far as the third and fourth receiver, it’s a toss-up between rookie, Early Doucet and 6th year pro, Jerheme Urban. Neither are particularly dangerous but they’re capable of being average #3 & #4 wide outs.
TEs – They’ll do good to combine for 25 yards, so you don’t have to worry about them.
RBs – Edge and Hightower both have 10 receptions so far. Hightower has the better YPC (9.2 vs 7.3) and he’s the more dangerous of the two.

What are you thoughts on Doucet?

Early
Eh, well he missed most of training camp and half the preseason with a groin injury (pretty sure it was a groin), and then he was inactive for the first four games, so we’ve actually seen very little of him. That being said he was somewhat impressive last week (6 for 42),especially considering it was his first game.

I always like him..
His 40 time and injury history caused him to slide..

Great idea cgolden
I really like this Q&A fanpost format. Hope it catches on with all the blogs.
I have a stupid question, but does AZ run the 3-4 defense mainly, or still a 4-3?

not a stupid question at all actually
If you look at most depth charts they’re defense is presented as a 4-3 but their defense really isn’t either one (if that makes any sense). They like to call their defense a ‘hybrid 3-4’ where some of the time the ROLB (Travis LaBoy) has his hand on the ground like a DE and the front looks like a 4-3. Other times that look more like the traditional 3-4 and they do blitz the opposite OLB like he’s 3-4 OLB. Overall it’s very confusing but ultimately I’d say they line up in both but they’re more of a 3-4 than a 4-3.

That’s a good explanation.
