Clinton Portis "50-50" for game vs Dallas
LANDOVER, Md. -- Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis was unable to practice Monday because of a sprained knee, and coach Jim Zorn said Portis is "50-50" for Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Portis bruised his knee on the final play of the first quarter of last week's 23-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers but returned for the next series and finished the game. The pain got progressively worse after treatment following the game, however, and Zorn said Monday that Portis has a bone bruise on the femur as well as a sprain.

Well this would make things a little easier.
Betts is a still a decent back and the run defense has been terrible as of late.

I think Betts is still hurt
So it could be Shaun Alexander

I think as the week progresses he'll get better
But the bone bruise can take a while to heal too…. he will not be @ 100% however

wow, things just might be turning our way!
If we can shut down the Skins running game without Portis, I love our chances against Campbell having to throw a lot.
Hell, maybe in a few weeks we’ll be seeing Leftwich in Pittsburgh the way Big Ben has been getting beat up every game. Wouldn’t that be sweet.

Hopefully not the same one that played last week...
Leftwich went deep on his first play and never looked back. Hell, I may rather have Ben out there hahaa. Staying on topic though, GOD THAT IS AWESOME!!! I’ll take the win over the respect (sduncan), but I get where you’re coming from. Anytime the league’s leading rusher (or one of, haven’t seen stats after this week) is out, that always bodes well for us!

I'd rather him play
I know we need the win, but I want the respect too, I don’t want to hear the excuses. I think we would win if the put Riggo, Monk, and Theisman out there so I want there whole team.
on the Portis note though, Moss is not 100% either
First to six!!!

I don't care about respect
right now I only care about wins and I don’t care how we get them.
Giants had no problem kicking our butts when we were down players, so I could care less how many star players are down when we play their team.

yeah
normally I’d hope both teams can play healthy and the best team win, but we need to win this game, so if this helps, hurray.

And did you hear anyone say anything about us being hurt
As the reason the Giants did so well? Not a chance.
Something tells me though if we beat the Redskins without Portis, there would be tons of articles about it.

This team doesn't deserve any respect....Not until they beat Wash, Seattle, San Fran, Balt, Pitts, NYG, and Philly
Only then will they earn my respect.

I don't care who the Skins have running the ball...
…if we don’t win the battle of the trenches, we lose the game.
For some strange reason, they always seem to run well against us, and that has to stop.
Second, Wade needs to devise a plan to stop Santana Moss from beating us deep. I like the way the Patriots rolled a safety over to stop the Bills deep threat Lee Evans from beating them for any bombs.
I would love to see us run the ball effectively, dominate time of possession, and pressure Washington relentlessly when we’re on defense.
And definitely don’t beat ourselves with stupid-a** turnovers and penalties.

I agree silverblue
our run defense has to absolutely get better, no question about it.
Skins, Steelers, Giants and Ravens all like to run the ball, so we better be ready.

I read that last week
he ran six 200 meter sprints and had no problems, that sounds pretty good to me.

they held him out of practice Monday
but the real test will be whether he’s back in practice fully on Wednesday and Thursday.

six 200 meter sprints....
are completely different on the ole hamstring than making a hardcut upfield… changing directions and trying to reach top speed once you plant your foot in the turf, thats where the problem would be… thats why they arent pushing him

The only reason Felix Jones tore his hammy is because Garrett wasn't using him properly...
You can not send a guy into game situations sporadically, with long lay overs on the sidelines….muscles need to be warmed, stretched and flexed consistantly to prevent exactly what happened…There is a reason they have pre game warm ups, and even regular contributors keep themselves revved up on the stationary bike or by keeping loose by different means…….surely a shame as Felix was well on his way to Rookie of the Year honors, and would have more than likely contributed to another victory over the past month……

That's a good point Boyz
I never even thought about the sporadic playing time as a factor. I’d hope he would have used the stat. bike to keep loose on the sideline, but that injury might have been an unfortunate result of El Gato’s limited plays.

I'm usually with you on Garrett Boyz
But this is a little extreme. How many NFL backups only see the ball 4-8 times a game and don’t tear hammies?

I'd take an 80% Portis
over a 100% Alexander if I’m a Skins fan. If he can’t go, Campbell should be made to run for his life. Emphasis on should, considering how great our game plans tend to be.

even without Portis, Wash is going to dink and dunk our asses all day...and lead to no sacks.....again..
ummmmm..I got an idea….rush 6-7 and have our secondary man up in press coverage and delay the wr patterns with a bump at the line……once ?
can i see this once in the Wade Phillips era ???

Right on Boyz-
This shouldn’t be tough to see…man coverage and send some different blitz packages but for god sakes, disrupt a quarterbacks rhythm for once! Send Corner/Safety blitzes occasionally too…if we give up a big play here or there I can stand it. What I can’t stand is quarterbacks hanging out and picking apart our soft zone coverages.
I have noticed a new resurgence in Cowboy hating in 2007, which can only mean one thing- We're back.

The Redskins offense
Has moved the ball at will against Dallas in their last 3 meetings and a lot of that has been through the air. I don’t expect this Sunday to be any different. The Redskins like to run a quick pass offense that hits a lot of things underneath the coverage. The Cowboys, as you know, with Wade Phillips like to line up their DB’s some 10 to 15 yards off the line of scrimmage, basically giving the Redskins plenty of room to work with underneath. So unless for the first ever in the Wade Phillips era we see a lot more press coverage I’d expect the Redskins to have very little difficulty passing the ball.
Also, Ratliff is playing out of position, (he should be a DE in the 3-4 scheme where he’d be a perennial probowler) and this team really needs a true NT if they ever really want to get good at stopping the run. I’d expect the Skins to run at will against this undersized defensive front regardless of who’s carrying the ball. :(
by gee-roj on Nov 11, 2008 12:11 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I disagree
The Cowboys have proven in the past that they can stop the run with Rat at NT. I agree we should acquire a bigger widebody to play NT and move Rat to DE next year, however, as long as the Cowboys remain disciplined to their gap responsibilites, they can stop the run.
Regarding our pass defense against the Skins, in the last game Newman was playing hurt which is why Campbell and Moss hurt us so bad. With a healthy Newman, I don’t expect that to be the case this time around.

by Terry on Nov 11, 2008 12:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It’s true
That Newman was playing hurt last time but is he going to be 100% and in game shape this Sunday? I hope so.
The rest of the secondary is still a mess, (though I don’t think it will stay that way as Jenkins and Scandrick mature so at least the future is bright there). Unfortunately this coaching staff has yet to develop a scheme that plays to this young secondary’s strengths.
I hope you’re right because getting swept by the Skins is one of the worst feelings in sports.

healthy...BUT RUSTY.....i expect the same results against of pass defense, especially Newman.

Discipline
“as long as the Cowboys remain disciplined to their gap responsibilites”
- Have you been watching the games. This team is not long on discipline.
The run defense is average at best and has to face four very good running teams in the next six weeks. Two others feature Frank Gore and Westbrook who are not chop liver either. Seattle is the only game left where Dallas faces a weak running team. Dallas is not going to turn this season around by becoming a sound run defense. This teams hope rest on the ability of Tony Romo and the offense to carry this team.
Dallas needs to score 24+ a game to win.

well, thats going to have to change
if the Cowboys expect to make the playoffs. Teams that can’t consistently stop the run aren’t going to win very many games.
The team did it last season, so it’s not as though they’re not capable of doing it.

Portis has a 2nd Degree MCL Sprain
A grade 2 sprain of the MCL is an incomplete tear of one of the knee’s four major ligaments and could require a recovery time of three to four weeks. Reserve running back Ladell Betts sustained a sprained MCL (though which degree wasn’t documented) in the Redskins’ loss to St. Louis on Oct. 12 and has yet to return to practice.
