Tracking the Cowboys Draft Picks
The Cowboys paid a high price for WR Roy Williams last month, surrendering a first, a third and a sixth-round pick for him.
That said, Dallas had additional picks in the 3rd, 4th and 6th rounds, due to two '08 draft-day deals and Jason Ferguson's trade to Miami.
The Cowboys therefore have selections in every round except the first and have two picks in the 4th.
What's more, the 3rd rounder they kept was obtained from Cleveland, which is having a poor season. The 4th is from Detroit and right now it looks to be the first pick of that round.
Here are the current relative positions of Dallas' draft picks through round four, along with a veeeeeeeery preliminary mock to get your mind off the season for just a minute:
2nd round -- approximately 50-53. If the Cowboys hang in the 9-7 or even 10-6 range they're looking at the 18 through 21st pick in the 2nd round.
Selection: Tyronne Green, OG, Auburn
He's big, girthy and can run. Give him a year with Joe Juraszek and he'll be around 320-325 lbs.
3rd round -- approximately 72-74. The Browns pick looks like it will be in the top 8 to 10 of the 3rd, barring a late run.
Selection: Ron Brace, NT, Boston College
Stout, with 323 lbs. of lower-body ballast and power. Will let Jay Ratliff move to DE.
4th round -- approximately 97th to 100th. This should be the first pick of the round, but we don't know how many supplemental 3rd round picks the NFL will award. Dallas could get a high compensatory pick for Julius Jones. They should get a second one for Jacques Reeves as well.
Selection: Chip Vaughn, S, Wake Forest
He's big, at 215 lbs., and he gets his hands on a lot of passes.
4th round -- approximately 120th.
Selection: Cornelius Lewis, OT, Tennessee State
The Cowboys picks are nicely spaced. It would be great if their picks end up a little lower, but the Cleveland and Detroit picks look fine.
Hey, if I hit on just one of these picks, I'll be the first to say I told you so.

Extra 6th?
Am I correct in stating that the 6th round pick we gave up was the one we got back from Tennessee because somebody got suspended this year? That 6th rounder was already gone, and as Rafael stated, the 3rd we gave up was the Dallas pick, and the 3rd we keep is Clevelands, so in essense it was a 1st and a lower 3rd…
The price of the trade, looking at it from that standpoint, doesn’t seem that bad.
Also, based on last year’s draft positions, a 1st, 3rd and 6th would be a points value of the 17th overall pick. Roy E was what, 5th overall?

I've been saying all along that this was a great trade.
These stupid talking heads that were stating the Cowboys gave up too much for Roy had no clue what they were talking about. Sure, a 1st, 3rd and 6th sound like a lot until you factor in how many extra picks that Cowboys had already accumulated.
by Brandon Worley on Nov 11, 2008 10:01 PM CST up reply actions
The 6th was thrown in to complete the deal. And, as I said, since that pick was already off the books, it’s like they still didn’t have it, so why not…

huh?
That doesn’t make sense to me Brandon.
How does how many picks we have affect whether we overpayed?
Wealth shouldn’t impact price?
we over paid for a pro bowl caliber WR ??? i think not
Roy would have been a top 10 pick in the ‘08 draft as well….so moving from #28 in that draft would have surely cost us more than a 3rd round pick….let’s get over it already.

my issue is simple
draft picks are the lifeblood of a team.
if you are picking out of the top 5-8, then you get players to sign long term deals for below market prices.
when you sign free agents you have to pay market prices (or above) to get them by definition
the way to keep out of salary cap jail is to stock pile draft picks.
the team is now in a position where we have to pull for an uncapped year or we are in trouble. an uncapped year means a good chance of a lock out in 2011. kind of lose lose for the us fans
I want you to go and look at the third round in previous drafts
What I have found is usually 1/3 of third rounders usually pan out. So I’m not too broken up spending a third round for Roy.
i hear you
but great teams are built via drafts not free agency
great teams lose more players to FA than they gain
JJ has gottten into signing high profile players to big money deals and trading for them
he wants to make a splash
making a splash usually doesnt end up helping
i hope it does this time
sadly, we have replaced the redskins as defending off season champions.
That's not a fair comparison
WAS picked up vets at the end of their careers and traded almost all their picks to do so.
Dallas has picked up younger guys without giving away an entire draft.
We’ll still have a lot of picks in 2009.
2nd round – 1 pick
3rd round – 1 pick (from CLE)
4th round – 2 picks (one from DET)
5th round – 2 picks(one from TEN)
6th round – 1 pick (from MIA)
7th round – 2 picks (one from DET)
That’s what the DMN had us down for after the Roy W trade and post Pacman suspension.
That’s a lot of rookies, or picks to trade with to move up in the draft order with.

+1 Brandon....and i do believe there were plenty of BTB regulars that were more than willing to give up more than a 1st and late 3rd for Roy Williams going into the '08 draft
In fact most people, from what i recall said there is no way we can get Roy for ONLY a 1st and 3rd….
plus the 7th we get back from Detroit is equally as good as the late 6th we gave them…..a wash there…
I do believe we gave a 3rd or 4th or 5th rounder in 2010, to move up from #28 to #25 to grab Jenkins….i may be wrong, as it may have been a later pick, and it’s a mute point now… but taking WR- Roy Williams over Mike Jenkins would have been a no brainer at that point in the draft, even if it was our #28 and our late 3rd rounder……..and everyone would have been all over it then….just like they should have been all for this trade when it went down…If used properly over the next 7 games…Roy Williams will be a major reason why we make the playoffs……and win it all….

I think 325424's original
point was a valid one. However you break it down, no matter how many picks you have left, we still gave up a lot of picks for a WR. Whether or not we were really hurt by the move or not doesn’t have anything to do with if we overpaid or not.
That being said, I’m behind the trade. It took me awhile but the way I now look at it is that we needed a young WR DESPERATELY!!! How many picks would it have taken to move up for Michael Crabtree?? I’ll bet more than just a 1st, 3rd, and 6th. We also eliminate the bust factor this way. Of course, we also pay a hell of a lot more but for a “sort of” proven commodity.
rim shot!

I like your selections
Mainly because they’re mostly linemen. This team needs more linemen on both sides of the ball.
Good Stuff and Research
However, I think we need to go QB in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. It’s time to draft a QB and develop a backup who can play. I’m eyeballing Rhett Bomar there. He’s got tools and is moving up the draft boards………….
I agree w/ all of your picks being “need” picks. We need an OG, NT and SS. Maybe an OLB too (I’m guessing this might be Greg Ellis’ last season).

I know TTU guys usually go later so I think he would be a great quality late round pick up.

I see Harrell going anywhere from mid 2nd to late 4th round.
And Jerry would be a complete fool if he didn’t consider drafting a QB with one of our first 3 picks…and if not him, we should also be considering:
Harrell-Texas Tech rounds 2-4
McCoy-Texas rounds 2-4
Tebow-Florida rounds 2-4
Brown- C Arkansas rounds 3-5
Daniels-Missouri rounds 3-5
Hiller-W Michigan rounds 4-6
Bomar-S Houston rounds 4-6

I could see Daniels being this last years Matt Ryan come draft time.
He just seems to have the same things going for him. I definitely wouldn’t have projected Ryan as a top 5 pick last November either.

Although he's a gamer with a tough persona, and great abilities...NOBODY will be drafting Daniels in the first few rounds..
He’s Doug Flutie and Drew Brees all roll into one….but come scouting combine time people are going to find out that he’s really closer to 5’10" than the desired 6’4"….
He would have a difficult time playing behind our line, unless we spread out with 3-4 wides, and rolled him out alot…..

I would love too see him as a back-up on this team.. He is a gamer, but I agree he doesn’t have the “ideal measurable”..

If we are gonna draft a QB, let it be in round 5 or later.
We cant afford to spend a high pick on someone with little potential to contribute.
We did the right thing by getting a veteran backup, we just got the wrong one.
If we draft a rookie, and Romo gets hurt again, we will be just as screwed as we were this season.

?? huh ..Nobody said get rid of our vet #2 ...the rookie would need 2 seasons to eventually take over the #2 QB spot
I would certainly look for a better back up than Bollinger in the off season…AND draft a high round QB to be permanantly take over the #2 spot for 6-8 years..

Yeah
I never understood the Bollinger pick up.
They should cut Brooks and Brad, sign a decent vet with 4 or 5 years NFL experience or more, who can also hold for Folk, then get a rookie to groom with at least the potential of Matt Moore.

trivial question…. had to change my user name to come to this site and my gravatar did not come with me…how do I fix that?
Not sure but I think
your gravatar follows you by username. Whenever you use a new one you have to register it at gravatar.com. I think…
I think we need
some quality linemen too. I’m just leery of the Cowboys being able to find any good ones. We’ve only got 2 homegrown starters on our O-line and one of them, Flo Start, is playing like crap. Hell, he played like crap for about 5 years until BP got here. I just don’t understand why the Cowboys have such bad luck drafting O-linemen. Is it just the scouting dept.??
well...at least Ireland isn't around to blow more picks on underachieving O Linemen...
Unless your drafting a 1st round talent at O Line..it becomes very difficult to properly grade out the lesser tier guys…..guys drafted in the 2nd-3rd round aren’t much better than the ones you’ll see drop to the 4th-6th rounds…..

is it too much to ask to get another safety that can, like, cover?

we do have those
Brown and Watkins can cover. We are going to need another run stopper to replace Roy.
But....
Would it kill us to actually try to find someone who can do both?

brilliant
although danny noonan may have been worse (and was #12)
at least Noonan
was a starter for most of his stay in Dallas. In only full season (1988) he had 7.5 sacks, an int, a safety and a TD. Let’s see Barbie do that!
I don't mind keeping Burnett
for the right price. But if some team out there thinks he can be a starter and wants to pay him like one then adios Kevin!! I like the speed he brings to the LB position but not the injuries.
good call quincyyy...I've been following those two ILB's....as the drafts a year round thing for me...

I don't think that Jerry
Has enough power, I believe that Jerry and Wade were really pissed about what happened and at least Wade actually went up and talked about how he couldn’t count on Pacman and wouldn’t count on him because he didn’t believed that he would be back.
I believe that Adam Jones’ career with the Cowboys is over and it’s helped by the fact that Newman is back and the rooks are developing nicely.
Jerry was lobbying Goodell hard to not suspend him
I would have to imagine if Goodell gave Pac the green light so would Jerry
Well, yeah, but
That’s the polite thing to do when you went after a guy as hard as Jerry did.
The Cowboys recovered the 4th Round pick shipped to Tennesee for him and by talking good about Pacman he sends a good message to other FAs.

If we got Chip Vaughn I would:
1) crap my pants will sheer joy
2) buy his jersey
3) feel a lot better about our secondary. kid can play.
and he has balls of steel. when fsu came up to winston last year Chip had a buddy of his from florida send him an “unconquered” tshirt. he wore it underneath his jersey and pads. when we beat them he revealed that he sharpied over the “un” part of the tshirt and just left “conquered.” love this kid.
http://mistermittens.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/conquered1.jpg
Forget Pac....
Seriously…the guy doesn’t deserve to be here. I would much rather see a starting trio of Newman, Jenkins & Scandrick…lots of speed and both rooks look like they are coming along…
Hadn’t seen this site til today. Very nice. As long as we get Raf’s analysis all will be right with the world….
Oh…and a playoff berth!!!! Go Cowboys!!!
And if the draft goes this way....
I would be ecstatic if our draft went this way. If Rat could get out at DE combined with a space eating NT plus Ware & Spencer coming off the edges we’d be looking pretty good up front.
Stop playing the corners 30 yards off the line of scrimmage and it would be even better!

How often do you plan on doing these mock-up drafts? I love this sort of stuff. Helps us focus our attention on a few players instead of the hundreds that are draft-worthy.
Offseason
Once we get into February or so (after the SUper Bowl), you’ll get quite enough of the mocks, so don’t worry.
We’re looking at a means to bring over content from BSR and, when that happens, you should be able to search for the mock draft info here. Heck, you could go over to The Blue and Silver Report now and see for yourself…

Making the move
Just checking in from Tucson to the new site. Waiting for our “mates” from Australia and Tex to check in as well…We’ve got a lot of blogging to do to make the play-offs. It starts Sunday. Hard to remember a more important game. The Felix Jones injury smells. If he doesn’t practice today, the chances of being in the game at all on Sunday seem remote. Congrats Raf and glad to see so many friends here already.
Another good post, Raf
I would still make that trade today. Roy Williams is better than anything we could get in the middle of the first round. He’s young and will be good for years. So what if we don’t have a first round pick…we don’t really need another Bobby Carpenter anyway.
11 picks next year.......
Which will likely include an extra 4th and 5th round pick. With 11 picks to play with Jerry can package some to move up in the first round.
Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!
I would really really love it it Jerry worked out a deal to get back up in the 1st...I don't care how many picks it takes...2009 4th, 6th or 7th to go with our 2010 1st rounder might just do it.
That would still give us a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and whatever JuJo and Reeves brings us…
I would then select one of these guys in the first round:
Robinson-OG
Johnson-OG
Smith-OT
Mack-OG/OC
Cody-NT
Moore-S
Selvie-DE/OLB
Maclin-WR
Heyward-Bey-WR
Harvin-WR

I think priority will be on a NT, QB, ILB and OLB. We have never faired well taking OL high in the draft and I don’t see it changing. I would be more for taking a OL in the 3rd or 4th rounds. Better yet, I would be more for signing a veteran.
Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!
I don't get it.....
So because we missed on Jacob Rogers 4 years ago we shouldn’t draft an OT if a good one falls in the 2nd round? We should wait till the 4th? Doug Free was a 4th rounder. The fact that we’re discussing this shows that we weren’t to good drafting OTs in that round either.
OT talent dramatically drops after round 1.........IF Columbo is resigned, I certainly wouldn't be looking OT in the 2nd round..
OG is a different story….There are only about 4 quality Guards with a day 1 grade, so if one slides to us we must consider taking one in the 2nd….Better yet, there are a few OL that play OC but project well at OG (Luigs-Arkansas) …I’d love to grab a versatile OLineman like that late in the 2nd – early 3rd.

Bomar
He’d be a good pick, I wonder where he’d fall to?
5th or 6th round?

3rd round maybe
I think NT and either ILB or OLB are more of a priority….
Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!
I try not to get wrapped up in projecting anyone right now,
because Lord knows come Combine time, all of the athletic freaks and workout warriors will work themselves into the first round. Anyone else remember Andre Woodson and Brian Brohm being top 5 picks at this time last year?
Brohm was a steal where he was drafted....btw

I think he could be good with some time to develope,
but as it stands right now, he’s behind Flynn on the depth charts.

Flynn was a guy I mocked us taking in the 6th-7th last year....
good heady player….

I agree.
One of those, and I don’t mean this as an insult, good journeymen backups. Kind of like Batch in Pittsburgh.
by Mandmeisterx on Nov 12, 2008 11:45 AM CST up reply actions
exactly....but to find a good journeyman, life long back up to stay here for 6-8 years, you need to get them in the top 4 rounds...
Batch was a 3rd rounder….for instance…I’m not about to go with some flyer to develope in the 6th-7th rounds…This upcoming crop of QB’s is filled with viable back up solutions…that can actually step in with talent, and a chance to win……Further more…There aren’t too many teams that will be looking to upgrade the QB position, as far as franchise QB’s go…2-3 possible 1st rounders…That leaves at least 3-5 top graded QB’s looking for a team come late 2nd round through the 4th….Jerry has to hit on the one of them….period…Graham Harrell with our 3rd rounder would bring a serious sigh of relief….

....NT, QB, ILB, SS, OG, OT, OC, OLB are our needs going into next years draft
2nd round possible considerations:
NT
——
Cody-Alabama
Raji- BC
Brace- BC
Scott- Clemson
SS
——
Hamlin- Clemson
Chung- Oregon
Green- Rutgers
Vaughn-Wake
OG
——
Green-Auburn
Urbik- Wisc
Levitre- Oregon St.
ILB
——
Brinkley-S Carolina
Mauga- Nevada
McKillop- Pitt
OT
——
Loadholt- Okla
Tupou- Oregon
OC
——
Mack- Cal
Luigs- Arkansas
Wood- Louisville
OLB
——-
Clint Sintim- Virginia
QB
——
Harrell- Texas Tech
McCoy- Texas
Tebow- Florida
If we get any one of those players with our first pick in the second, we’re off to a good start, and hopefully one of the players listed above will also be available with our 3rd rounder as well, and possibly one slips all the way to our first pick in the 4th round….Trifecta baby…

I think FS is more of a need.
Hamlin is definitely playing out of position as one. I would love to get a quality safety who could play there and move him back to his natural position of SS.

lol...doubtful...i agree that Ken Hamlin is out of position...but i'm still high on Courney Brown to play FS...
Brown is getting much more PT this year, and I feel he’s done an admirable job, and will only get better with this experience going into year 3 next season. But we will need a legit back up for Ken Hamlin as/once Roy Williams is sent his walking papers after the season. Courney Brown/Pat Watkins can man the FS spot, but if we were to draft and get our hands on a Will Moore-Missou, Mike Hamlin- Clem, Ty Roole-FSU to give those guys some competition…i wouldn’t be opposed.
I still think Mike Jenkins should be a FS in this league……time will tell.

The thing that worries me about Brown,
I think he also has a lot of potential, but if neither he nor Watkins can force Keith Davis out of the starting lineup, what does that say about them?
by Mandmeisterx on Nov 12, 2008 12:08 PM CST up reply actions
It sez Brown isn't physical enough to play SS right now ....I felt he was misplaced there as it is...He's a FS not a SS
He’s got the size, but man, he was a damn shut down corner in college, with amazing speed and athletic ability…..you don’t switch him to SS, up in space, playing among the mansters…You put him in space, out in centerfield, to diagnose, and attack….I understand the reason he was placed there, because we had nobody behind Roy….and Watkins has already progressed at FS…..Roy Williams needs to be released, and Henry might be a casualty as well. But since Henry still has another year or two on his contract, I’m willing to give him a shot to win over the FS position, over Brown and Watkins…either way, I’d draft a SS prospect in the spring…Like the original post projects, Chip Vaughn- Wake Forest would be a great pick up at the top of the 4th round.
….that would make Hamlin SS, with Brown and Watkins to fight it out for FS…..then draft a SS prospect.

I guess I should have elaborated.
I was referring to moving Hamlin to SS and playing those guys at FS. I know it’s late in the season, but Watkins has been a FS a lot anyway and we spent a lot of time in TC working on versatility so that guys could play multiple positions, so you would think they would know the calls.

Raf, you should check out
the post left by Tex on your merger article. He lets Grizz have it with both barrels and it sounds like he will not be making the transition over to this site. If this stays true it remains to be seen.

Fantastic
Tex never contributes anything. Can’t stand the guy and I never understood why some enjoyed his posts. I stand by my longtime prediction that was a Philly fan just trying to spam our beloved blog. I’m enjoying this one so far, so I’d hate to see the same thing happen here

Gentlemen, and any ladies reading,
I was told back in the summer that o-line was THE position of priority this year.
Have you seen anything to disabuse you or that idea? Has Cory Proctor let everyone exhale?
They’re going to draft o-linemen. Bank on it. Also, look at the positions they were tracking last year and didn’t fill for an idea of their remaining wish list:
I’d say — NT and ILB. They were looking at Jerod Mayo, before he rocketed up the charts.
And then, there’s S.
Tex
Whatever. Why do people care about that flake? He’s not my child, I’m not his daddy and I don’t need to follow his weak-ass schtick.
I just figured he was more of a bad car wreck
something that got you attention and may show you something that is unpleasant. I meant the comment to be more of a joke rather than a seroius statement I do not take his posts seriously, did not mean to imply that he was your responsibility.

Jenkins
BoyzRBack,
Jenkins a FS? The guy got a top 15 grade from Dallas. It wasn’t as a FS. He’s well considered around the league.
Henry is almost washed up. Jenkins is his replacement. In fact, I’m worried that Wade will keep playing a banged up Henry over Jenkins, who is getting better ever week, despite his warts. I talked to a scout who has spoken to opponents who say they like Jenkins and targeted Henry because they don’t feel he can run any more.

+1
When does the loyalty to Henry end? It’s Jenkins’ time. He’s not all the way ready, but he is steadily improving. At least he has the recovery speed to bail himself out at times.

Tex
Cowboy78,
Okay. I get it. Tex is very much like a painter who decides that he’s only going to use the color red — and only paint with squares — and only create geometrical objects.
I guess you can be creative, but when you limit yourself as much as he does, I find it hard to keep looking at his “work.”
Raf I like the picks, but i got to ask if you think the idea of drafting an OG w/ our first pick is based on the assumption that Columbo will walk in the offseason and we might have to move BIGG out there at RT? If not then are we just drafting guys for the sake of development to replace some of the older guys in the coming years(Flo in particular and Kosier to a lesser degree i suppose).
Shout out
Formerly “Peter” on the B&SReport, I had to change my name for this site. Hey to all the guys from “Boys.com” to BSR to here. Hopefully everyone gets the news and makes it over.
This talk of drafting just begs for SCOUT’s input. Hadn’t seen him post in a long time and will miss his offerings during any and all draft talk. Raf and Raul, I’m looking forward to your continued excellence at this new site. Keep up the good work!
