Austin possibly out 2-4 weeks

According the Todd Archer at the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys receiver Miles Austin suffered a sprained lateral collateral ligament in Sunday night's victory over the Washington Redskins.

The injury could sideline the receiver/kick returner for up to four weeks.

Star-divide

He recently replaced Patrick Crayton as the 3rd receiver, but Crayton should see the field again with this news.

Austin made a critical 3rd down reception from Tony Romo on Sunday night when the quarterback sent a shovel pass in his direction and he caught it just past the first down marker.

As for kickoff duties, it won't be that large a hit if rookie Felix Jones can reutrn this Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

too bad, he was hitting his stride.

Crayton needs to step up his game. We’ll be okay with the 49ers and Seattle. Hopefully he can come back earlier than 4 weeks.

As much as I like him, he is really close to being considered injury prone.

OMG

What is the deal with our fragile young receivers??

by hiafex on Nov 18, 2008 10:19 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

are you serious?

these guys are professional atheletes who work out for a living. most (probably except linemen) are in better shape physically than most of us can only dream of. football is a physical sport. injuries happen. to call them fragile is laughable. i bet any of these “fragile” guys could beat the crap out of you, even with the injuries they have now.

hurd got hurt early in the game with an ankle injury that required surgery. he came back for the 2 minute drill because he was the only one that knew the position. could you run around for 2 straight minutes with an ankle that required surgery? doubt it.

stanback has been told his shoulder requires surgery yet he is trying to play through the pain because of other injuries to recievers and he sees an opportunity. do you think you could lift your arm with shoulder pads on to make a catch with guys running full speed trying to knock the crap out of you? doubt it.

austin. its his second knee sprain. nothing he’s done of the field suggests he’s soft. he’s a tough, gritty player who busts his butt when he’s on the field. perhaps a little unlucky, yes. weak and fragile, no.

plus, i doubt any of them would use the term “OMG”

we are serious

We all know how “in-shape” these guys are. That has nothing to do with them being fragile.

Stanback hasnt made many catches this year as far as i can remember.

The minute Austin is given any kind of responsibility he goes down with an injury. That is the definition of injury-prone.

i am chill....

i just think some people are too quick to judge. austin and hurd are both in their 3rd year. they were both on the majority of special teams with a few snaps on the regular offense sprinkled in or their first 2 years in the league. on special teams, going a hundred miles an hour down the field running straight to someone who is running the same way towards you. neither one got hurt. this year, they both had an opportunity for the number 3 position and both got unlucky. getting hurt one of three years isnt injury prone.

now, if you said, terry glenn was injury prone or fragile. maybe that wouldnt be too far off. he was consistently hurt throughout his career. but i still dont think anyone elses body could have faired any better. he had 10+ yr career in the nfl where average career is some where around 4-5 years.

+3 ...this is a tough man's game....the whole "injury prone" thing is sooooo over used and an oxymoronic comment..

The game of football is a highly physical game and you are “prone” to injuries on every single snap of the ball…As I myself have had multiple bone fractures, torn muscles, and ligiment damage to prove the case…Was I injury prone ?? no…..I was damn football player…it happens…it’s the breaks…your lucky if you don’t get injured…

This really sucks bad, Austin “3:16” was my offseason pick to become the 3rd WR -which he did in fact become. Yet i was getting heckled by all the Hurd and Amendola fans on DMN.com and TDCS.com from Draft Day to the preseason.

I hope “Stone Cold” Miles Austin has a speedy recovery. Get well, “3:16”.

Hurd

we need to give him another preseason game like a while back where Romo just throws it to him over and over, then trade him. we’ve got to try to get something out of him more than just wasted roster spots. if MA and Stanback are passing him on the depth charts (which MA had, at least) it might behoove us to make a move when his stock is up a bit more.

You all realize he’s on IR, right? And Stanback probably should be on IR. This Austin injury is definitely a hit to the depth. But as others have pointed out, if we can’t make do with TO, RW, Witten, Crayton and Barber, then we have much bigger problems.

there you go bringing facts into a good extended rant. you have a good (very good) point, as it’s difficult for him to rise on the depth chart when he’s out for the year. HOWEVER, he had been jumped by Austin in the preseason depth chart.

and do you realize.......

he’s out for the season with his contract up at the end of the year. i doubt the cowboys are going to sign him to a new deal, considering he’s at best the 5th reciever on the depth chart right now to show case him in a preseason game next year.

as much as i hate to admit it, his days in a cowboys uniform are probably over.

by yahurd on Nov 19, 2008 9:04 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not only that ...

But next year will be his 4th season, which means he’s a “veteran” with minimum salary requirements – around $520,000. That’s another reason why he may not be here. Owens and Williams are #1 and #2. I think you go Austin and Crayton as #3 and #4. No way a #5 receiver gets half a million in salary.

That’s probably where you see either a rookie WR from the 2009 draft of a guy like Amendola make the 2009 roster.

Knees are Knees

It’s not a training issue, it’s a bad fortune issue. Austin is a strong, physical receiver and they have a tendancy to get hurt more. Look at the 130 lb Marvin Harrison, who played injury free almost forever. Do you see Austin catching the ball and immediately diving down to avoid contact? No, he’s a kick returner at heart and won’t go down until he’s brought down.

Bring up Amendola and see if what’s his name from TC is still available to put on the p-squad. What the heck was his name?? Oh yea, Todd Lowber.

After some research it appears Lowber has been signed to the Dolphins p-squad. Doh! I thought he had major potential, oh well.. Now there’s no way we can put Austin on IR. I just hope it’s more along the lines of a 2-3 week injury so we can have him back for the last couple games.

Can anyone answer these two....

1. How is Felix doing? Di he re-agravate his injury to the point where he’s out another 4 weeks or he’s ready to play? I assume his condition is worse than what we’re being led t believe……when everybody is quiet about it, it usually smells like $hit.

2. Is the NFL going to say something about Pacman this week? Are they going to say at least when are they going to make a decision?

I wouldn't change anything right now other

than move Henry to the 4th CB spot and roll with Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick as the starting three. Let Pacman compete with Henry as the #4 and use him on special teams. Right now we are an injury or two from being in serious trouble again the reason bringing Pacman back makes sense.

Has Pac ever returned kicks before?

It takes a different skill set than returning punts. I still think that if he isn’t going to be one of our starting CB’s, then Jenkins should be back there when Felix isn’t. Granted, I think he should start opposite Newman, but if he isn’t, you might as well use his talent in some way.

Cutting Pacman now when (or if) he’s re-instated would be like cutting T.O. wen he had his overdose or whatever the hell that was, or when he cries about not getting the ball enough, etc etc.

Are you sure T.O is one of the best in the league? I have nothing against him and consider him a very good receiver but this year you could argue that he’s not exactly a great one anymore (numbers looks very crappy), the second int on the washington game was a ball he didn’t catch very well and popped off (he never catches it clean)……Pacman when not in trouble was one of the best in the league as both CB and punt – returner. He’s only 26 or so also which is an advantage to him. if we where to cut players becvause tey get into trouble, Michael Irvin wouldve never happened. C’mon….

The PacRat

I do not see him being a long term solution. I think we should cut ties and let Jenkins and Scandrick gain experience.

I've always been a pro-Pac

But this is the only concern. Since his tomfoolery, Jenkins and Scandrick have come along quite well. I’d rather both stay on the field.

Yep

I take Pac back without a second thought. I also drop him down the depth chart and look at him as nothing more than a backup for the remainder of the year. If he can prove himself and stay out of trouble the rest of this season and all the way through training camp and pre-season, then I’d allow him to compete for a starting gig.

I Have The Solution

Bring Pacman back and make him the 4th WR.

Just kidding but I think the reason Miles was starting to show something was because RW11 was on the field. I’m sure Crayton will do fine. I do however think that if Stanback’s injuries are preventing him from being the 3rd or 4th receiver than he should be put on IR and a healthy body like Amendola should be brought up.

Interesting debate on pacman.

One thing to consider is CB depth and the opportunity he would create to move henry over to a safety spot in certain packages. I like the idea of the young CBs playing more, but we used henry effectively in certain packages at the beginning of the year. He can relieve some “liability” at safety in certain cases.

Pacman also showed himself to be a hitter in his playing time. Although he didnt do anything dazzling, he did show that he is not afraid of contact. I daresay we can use peope like that.

I’m not sure his presence would seriously disrupt team chemistry, but im not sure immediate and unconditional welcoming back to the team is the answer either.

That's a no braniner...sign him.....

Hurd is a UFA and will be gone. Crayton will probably be demoted to the #4 and won’t be resigned when his contract is up. Austin is the future and will be the #2 when TO retires.

sign him with what?

how much?

to tender him, you will pay him anywhere from 1.5 to 2.5 million for next year. to sign him long term, he likely wont cost that much per year, but he’ll cost some money. maybe crayton money.

by THEjarhead on Nov 19, 2008 11:08 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

no where near Crayton money....2nd round tender...less than a million per...

He has no body of work to demand large dollars, and was a undrafted rookie free agent……I see him getting about 5 million over 3-5 years….he will be signed…and we are all set at WR for the next 3 years at least…

I'm not worried about that

He is a tough player and when you play special teams as well as WR your chances increase getting injured. Hopefully, we can find someone else in the future to do kickoff returns.

Its easy not to worry about it, he is down the depth chart and making little money. Now, we’re going to be talking making alot of money and moving up the depth chart. You’ve got to have a guy who can stay on the field.

this is the same concern with burnette, who is similar in the sense that he has found a role, but is rapidly becoming “injury-prone.”

Austin will not cost alot of money and we would need to sign a WR.

Hurd won’t be back. Crayton, if he is lucky may be here one more year after this one. I’ll tell you what he won’t get a new contract. Stanback is showing no signs of becoming a legite WR. So that leaves RW and TO who may only be here another year or two. Austin has the potential of being #2 Wr on this team for a long time…..Hurd, Crayton and Stanback are not.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

by Boyzfan94 on Nov 19, 2008 11:30 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Crayton is locked up to a long term deal. he is not going anywhere.

Austin will cost AT LEAST 1.5 million to tender next year. that will keep him around for one year.

he will likely cost AT LEAST crayton money, maybe a little less, to keep with a long term deal. I can see miami making a run on him if we dont tender him. I wouldnt be shocked to see other teams sniff around him too.

the one thing that might scare them off is his seeming propensity for nagging injuries.

by THEjarhead on Nov 19, 2008 11:35 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

easy decision

Tender him and move on..

Craytons contract is cheap...... Cutting him won't be a problem
Crayton will have a $1 million base salary in 2008 and $1.5 million in 2009. He receives a base salary of $2 million in 2010 and $2.5 million in 2011. In the final year of his contract, he can earn an additional $1 million if he reaches certain incentives.

1.5 mil next year as the 4th Wr is not much at all. He probably won’t see the 2010 numbers and could be released. Paying him 2 and 2.5 Mil as a 4th WR is a bit much.

Austin will probably get anywhere from 2 to 2.5 a year at best. I’ll take that all day everyday for a future #2 Wr.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

by Boyzfan94 on Nov 19, 2008 12:18 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

cutting him accelerates his contract.

by THEjarhead on Nov 19, 2008 12:24 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

in other words, if you cut crayton to make room for austin, you accelerate his contract and pay for it all on the cap, even though he is no longer on your team AND you pay for austin, who has not shown an ability to play alot without injuries this year.

by THEjarhead on Nov 19, 2008 12:32 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

His base is low to begin with..

He won’t see past 2010, especially not when he could earn another 1 mil in 2011. He is a little long in the tooth to begin with. 1.5 or 2.5 mil is nothing so don’t get in a panick. Like I said, we have to resign Austin because Hurd is a UFA and won’t be resigned. Stanback..IMO will never amount to anything but a utility player at best in this league. Our 4 WR’s next year will probably end up being TO, RW, Austin, Crayton and someone else.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

by Boyzfan94 on Nov 19, 2008 12:54 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cutting a Player Only Accelerates the Bonus Amount

Maybe this is what you meant but cutting a player does not accelerate their remaining base salary into the one year it only accelerates the remaining of their signing bonus into that year. I don’t know what his bonus was when he signed.

by staubachfan on Nov 19, 2008 1:14 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

whatever SB money is left plus any guaranteed money left will accelerate too, at least thats my understanding.

My longer point, you dont create cap room by cutting a player and accelerating his remaining money to your cap. Nor do you create cap room by signing a player to a big deal on very little evidence that he is worth it and the hope that he can eventually become a #2 WR.

my guess is that austin will be tendered the minimum. that gives the boys another year to decide what to do and protects their time investment in him with a 2nd round pick if someone else takes him.

by THEjarhead on Nov 19, 2008 1:38 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

NO reason

To cut Crayton doesn’t make sense he is stable and cheap..

I thought that was the no brainer. Also, I thought getting guys extended was the reason Romo, Bigg, et al reworked their deals?

Jerry was saving a spot to sign a WR maybe

Plus he still has another year under his rookie contract. This coming off-season he’ll get a new deal.

I only hope there is some room left for Colombo. I would put him at 2nd most important vet to re-sign.

+1 ....Columbo is clearly our biggest FA resign...we can not lose him...period...

I believe Jerry is going to wait until after next season to resign Ware….There will be no cap in 2010…and Jerry will give him a base salary of 30 million in ‘10…….then a drop off to about 10- 11 million per after that…….to protect against a cap being reinstalled…..don’t worry about Ware. He’s not going anywhere..

deals have been reworked to make room for deals already done, not for deals that will be made in the future.

dallas has wiggle room, but not much. the margin for error has shrunk on re-signing your own FAs.

the good news is the dallas track record is pretty good. the only questionable in house FA deals are crayton and roy williams (i think roy is gone next year BTW). crayton was a little steep, and we likely wouldnt be saying that had he caught a certain pass in a playoff game last year.

crayton stays on the field though. austin has not shown that he can, even in limited playing time.

the boys will need to be REAL careful with guys like austin and burnett.

and praying for a cap free 2010 season. JJ has been planning on this and the ‘boys are in deep trouble if the league works out a cap structure for that season.
