How Can Anyone not Love this Guy?

If you don't remember, a few months ago there was a story about Romo stopping to help a couple on the side of a road who had a flat tire, after playing a game and flying home.  Well, I saw this story on the DMN blog about Tony buying a homeless guy a ticket to see a movie.

Romo, who confirmed the story but didn't want to elaborate, waved Doc over to sit by him and his buddy. Doc sheepishly mentioned that he hadn't showered in a few days.

"Don't worry about that," Romo said. "I'm used to locker rooms."

How crazy is that?  I know most people, myself included, hardly even notice these guys, let alone give them money or offer to buy them things.  Yet Tony takes the time out to pay for this guy's ticket and lets him set next to he and his buddy.  I don't know about you guys, but this makes me appreciate Tony and what he brings to this team all that much more.

From Jersey, back for Turkey Day...

I think he’s saying that Giants fans tend to hate the guy. Of course they do, because Romo represents so much that they love to hate about the ’Boys.

Favre played for a team that few people hate like they hate the Cowboys. Don’t expect the same universal love for Romo.

Yeah, this is something I truly will never understand

He plays as well as any QB in the league not named Brady or P Manning. He puts up numbers, he wins games. He has flaws, but so do all QBs (Romo’s turnovers, Brady’s lack of mobility, P Manning’s need for protection to make plays, Brees’ mobility and height, River’s temperament. The list is endless). And on top of all that, he’s just a genuinely good person.

I get that some fans of other teams won’t like him because some people are simply that narrow minded, but when I hear it from Cowboys fans, I have to wonder what QB exactly WOULD make them happy.

I also like the fact that unlike other players

Romo doesn’t hold some big banquet and invite reporters whenever he does some good thing. He does these things just to do them, with no recognition expected. Not to take away from others that hold banquets and fundraisers, but Romo’s actions just seem more pure.

Romo specifically said he did NOT want this to get out. It’s just Romo being what he considers a decent human being, but in this day and age, it’s really him being a model human being. However, the Cowboys PR staff decided to shoot this everywhere they could. It just adds to the “Look at us! Look at us! mentality that they’ve always had…
As for the haters, they’re never going to go away. Antonio could cure cancer and he’d still be called Tony Homo. T.O. could invent a water-powered car and you’d still hear people going "sob sob that’s my quarterback.” It’s called being a Cowboy. Those who like us, love us. Those who don’t, LOATHE us. I wouldn’t have it any other way…

Let me try and help you understand

Let me take a crack at helping you understand our (at least my) perspective.

Some of us don’t view an opinion of Tony Romo as an all-or-nothing proposition. This concept that you either love Tony Romo and think he is a perfect quarterback and person or you are (to quote Terry) "just a plain hater or a miserable person" doesn’t wash with me.

From time-to-time I do indeed point out Tony Romo’s flaws. He isn’t perfect; far from it. He is by all accounts a tremendous person (must be born and raised in Wisconsin!) and has, to this point in his career, enjoyed moderate success as an NFL quarterback.

Occasionally pointing out his shortcomings does not mean that we do not like him or that we are unhappy that he is the quarterback of our favorite team. It simply means that we can rationally look at him as a quarterback and point to areas that he needs to improve upon to lead the Dallas Cowboys to the Super Bowl or even a playoff win. He needs to cut back on his turnovers, plain and simple. He needs to take fewer risks and take care of the football. He needs to not make poor leadership decisions like taking Mexican vacations during the playoff bye week. Recognizing these shortcomings and areas for improvement does not mean that we don’t like Romo. Those of us in this camp want Romo to play well and also want the Cowboys to win just as much as everyone else. Presenting this different perspective doesn’t make me a hater or narrow minded or a miserable person.

What I find bizarre is that some bloggers have made Tony Romo into a deity or a superhero that can do no wrong. It is an obsession that I find weird and perhaps borders on being unhealthy. With these guys there is always some excuse. Romo never plays poorly……it is always dropped passes, poor line play, injuries, play calling, etc. that was the cause of the Cowboys poor offensive play and defeat….never Romo. But as the saying goes, to each his own – if someone finds fulfillment in worshiping Tony Romo, have at it. Please recognize though that I’m not a hater just because I don’t kneel down at that alter.

by Cowboy Louie on Nov 20, 2008 12:46 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

See, your problem Louie is that

you can’t accept the fact that Romo can only cut back his INTs only so much because he’s a gunslinger, thats just the type of qb he is and has always been his entire life. He can’t change into Tom Brady.

Just like with Favre, you can’t change this about him or expect this to change, you just have to accept it as Romo being Romo. Thats just how he plays the game.

Your problem is that you refuse to accpet this by saying he has to do this or he has to do this, when in fact he doesn’t. He’s going to play the game the same way he’s always plays the game.

I know, sometimes those turnovers can be frustrating, but the TDs he produces more than make up for it and if you really pay attention to his TOs, you’ll notice they rarely if ever happen in the 4th qtr or when the game is on the line, they mainly happen early in games which makes them less of a problem since he has time to make up for them.

BTW, I’ve never ever said Romo has never played poorly, I’ve admitted he’s had some bad games in his career, but he gets too much blame when we lose and hardly any credit when we win by certain individuals whom I consider haters, so naturally I’m going to defend the guy.

No, Tony Romo doesn't have to always be just like Brett Favre

While you may define it as a problem of mine, I’m not ready to accept that Romo can’t mature into a quarterback that takes measured risks instead of slinging it around all game and playing careless with the ball. I believe that quarterbacks can and do change and improve over time, just like a great pitcher with a world of talent adjusts his game to be more mental and less physically dominating as the seasons wear on.

If Tony Romo stays a gunslinger his whole career then it doesn’t bode well for the Dallas Cowboys. Despite having all the great regular season statistics that you love so much about Romo, Brett Favre has won one super bowl in 17 years. One. Why? Because turnovers prevent him from stringing together multiple games in a row against good opponents. That is the problem with a gunslinger quarterback. Their inconsistency is nearly always their downfall come playoff time. Brett Favre’s greatest downfall is that he never matured as a quarterback. Sure, he has been entertaining as hell all these years and he kept the Packers franchise winning regular season games consistently. But equally consistent has his poor record in the playoffs.

I’m not interested in having a quarterback that racks up huge regular season numbers but doesn’t deliver in the playoffs. I’ve seen enough of Favre to know that his style of play is not conducive to winning super bowls, and right now Tony Romo is way too much like Brett Favre for my taste. Despite your claim that it is impossible, it will continue to be my hope that Romo matures and reigns in his wild side to a reasonable level.

Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning may not be as flashy as Romo or put up the regular season statistics that he does, but their style of play is made for winning playoff football games. Romo needs to find a middle ground between Favre’s out-of-control gun slinging style and the more conservative style of these two guys who, at early points in their career, have managed to lead teams to a Super Bowl victory.

by Cowboy Louie on Nov 20, 2008 8:33 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I disagree

For a gunslinger, Romo doesn’t make that many bad decisions or throws. I hope he never changes and I believe he can win in the playoffs with his style.

He only threw one INT in 2 playoff games and that one was a desperation heave on 4th down the last play of the game which shouldn’t really count.

Well obviously you're not talking me

because of course I specifically stated that he is flawed. As are all QBs. But in trying to show your balance, you trash your own point. So allow me to help you understand.

Of course he needs to cut down on turnovers. Of course he is not perfect on or off the field. Now, from the sublime to the ridiculous…

The Mexican vacation wasn’t a leadership mistake. He didn’t let his team down. One of the acknowledged team leaders – Witten – was there with him. It didn’t lose any games. The team took care of that. What it was was simply a PR mistake. It’s a mistake but not one of leadership. Only media and a few fans said that it was. Elsewhere in the league guys like TOm Brady defended him. But what would he know about leading an NFL franchise from the QB position?

His success has been much more than moderate. It has been more along the linesof historic, with his passing, winning percentage and winning percentage on the road in the top handful of QBs ever. That’s not moderate. No, I know already, he hasn’t won a playoff game. Got that stored away. But that is not entirely in his control and it’ll change as long as he stays healthy.

I have no sports heroes and I don’t recognize Romo as a deity. He’s an amazingly good QB and I accept him for what he is – sometimes flawed, sometimes brilliant, gun-slinger, play ground, make it happen, take some risk QB. It’s OK if people don’t like that, but that’s who the guy is. He’s gonna break some eggs to make the omelettes.

Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig loves it.

Louie, Louie, Lou-eye!

The Cowboys scored on their 2nd possession of that tragic playoff game and I believe Romo completed all of his passes on that drive; so you couldn’t really say the offense came out sluggish and lackadaisical. They actually faded in the fourth due to a variety of things. Whatever dubious connections one could make to the offense fading late in a game and some trip Romo took; be my guest. I just don’t see it. Of course, I’ve seen people go as far as to blame Romo’s vacation for the sorry tackling display put on by Greg Ellis and the lesser of two Roys on Amani Toomer’s long touchdown catch-and-run. Yes, Romo’s lack of leadership caused these paid professionals to tackle like little baby girls. I guess Jacques Reeves was on the trip too and Romo spiked his drink and did very bad things to the young man causing his utter lapses in concentration which were the primary factor in Eli leading a scoring drive with less than a freaking minute left in the half.

by MadMick on Nov 20, 2008 6:44 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

MadMick quit making sense

Of course Romo is to blame for paid professionals not doing their jobs. After all, it was because of Romo that Crayton dropped 2 TD passes. It was because of Romo that Reeves couldn’t cover my 12 year old cousin. It was because of Romo that the dominant OL treated the Giants pass rushers like they were charging bulls….’ole!

Romo is to blame for all our problems. Just like a few years back when Peyton Manning missed a chip shot FG against the Steelers. Peyton Manning couldn’t stop the Patriots from having 2 different 10 minute plus drives in the second half. It’s ALWAYS the QB’s fault.

QB’s get too much blame for team failure, and too much credit for team success. Case in point. I actually read an article before this season started that said Eli was better than Peyton now, because he was a bus driver of a hot defense.

He is my quaterback and he is my role model today and I ask myself a question – would I have done the same thing for Doc what Romo did for him? I don’t know. May be but he did it despite of the fact that he knew this news would leak for better or for worse. Be that way Toni. Don’t worry what people say. You have a true heart and keep it that way dude.

And now I know why TO cried after the 2007 post season loss to the Giants. “That’s unfair, he is my quaterback”. You are right Mr. I got a flu today – he is our QB.

This story is a little too saccharine for me.

The pulling over to help Gramma and Grampaw change their tire I get. Seeing a horrible movie with a bum named Doc? Doc? What is he; some kind of dwarf? What’s next? Pacman sharing some coke (not the kind you get in a can) with a prostitute that goes by Snow White?

No

Doc is a dude that has this awesome car that can take him back to the future. His car broke down in the bad part of Dallas in 2008 and he’s trying to collect enough trash to get it running again. Thankfully, Romo bought him a ticket to see a horrible movie, but it was the thought that counts. Now Doc is going to go in to the future and ensure that we win the SB this year.

How many of these don't we know about?

Tony has had several of these issues, and he won’t talk about them. How much of this kind of stuff does he do that we never find out about?

You know, most non-Cowboys fans are ignorant. All we hear about is the thugs on this team. Buncha felons. Quite frankly, they are a bunch of good people. Pacman excepted, of course. Who else is a thug? Did Tank commit any violent crimes. Dude loves his guns. Just didn’t do it the right way. Tons of Americans love guns.

As of my last count, the only team in the NFL that has gone longer without a member of the team being arrested is the Chiefs. That was several months ago, and may have changed.

The Appropriately Named TANK

he did not commit any violent crimes, but can we call it accurately. loaded automatic weapons were found unlocked, in the open, in a house with his small children.

not a violent crime, but not the safest move either.

that said, everytime I’ve watched “The Longest Yard,” new version and old version, the Mean Machine wins.

so, we can be assured that the more convicts and suspensions on our squad, the better.
