Felix Jones to be placed on injured reserve
Per the DMN blog:
Rookie RB Felix Jones will be placed on the injured reserve and will have surgery to repair a torn ligament underneath his left big toe.
Ugh.
The Cowboys will really be relying on Marion Barber now, and Wade Phillips will have to overcome whatever bugs him about Tashard Choice. In today's NFL you cannot make it very far without some sort tandem backfield that helps to relieve your main guy. Marion Barber is one hell of a running back but we need him to stay as fresh as possible. Right now Barber is one pace for nearly 400 touches this season.

Once you give choice a chance you won’t go back. When I see what Forte has done in Chicago, that could have been Choice as well.

The injury actually happened when Felix was testing his knee while running and changing directions when he stumbled jamming his toe, so it had nothing to do with the strength and conditioning coach Joe Juraszek. It was just a freak accident… but this team certainly has the injury bug this year. The football gods aren’t looking down favorably on the cowboys when it comes to these injuries, I guess it’s payback for the recent years of few injuries..

In other injury news
Brady Quinn’s index finger on his right (throwing) hand is broken, but he finished Monday’s game and will reportedly not miss any time.
I am not casting aspersions, but I wouldn’t mind an analysis as to why one QB with a broken finger on his throwing hand would miss 4 weeks while another would allegedly not miss any time. One was a pinky, another was an index finger. The break on one was the 5th metacarpal, the other the distal phalange (or tip). Both digits seem pretty important to throwing a football, and both injuries seem pretty painful.
The Browns may be bluffing, maybe Quinn will miss time. Recall Romo playing head games as to whether he’d play against the Rams or not, but then backing off because it took too long to get the football in the proper grip placement.
I am just trying to figure things out. Is there a doctor in the house (blog)?

the break wasn't on Romo's finger
the 5th metacarpal is actually in your hand, not your finger, so in reality Romo has a broken hand, not finger, not sure why it was ever reported as such.

... and
I got it from the Cowboys website, DMN and CBS Sportsline. Now, I’m not saying they’re lying, but stating it as a fracture to the 5th metacarpal isn’t the same as stating that someone has a strained ligament, which could be anything from a pull to a tear.
They were very specific, and I think that says something.

they only ran Barber a handful of times
that was just simply a HORRIBLE game plan. The issue (IMHO) with Felix not being used more, overall for the season, is Garrett’s overthinking of how to set up the opponent for later in the game. For instance in this last game the whole, toss to Barber to the outside for the first three quarters then bang up the middle in the fourth, worked.
To me, when you have talent like Barber and Felix, you don’t need to disguise what you are doing. Just let the talent win out.
Choice is different. You don’t gameplan him much differently than you would Barber. IMO again of course. Then again, I might have just talked myself into believing the coaching staff says to themselves, he’s just like Barber, might as well keep Barber in.

I'm leaning more on the fact they are "stupid".....poor utilization of talent and depth....a clear flaw of Garrett's and Wade for that matter.
He even stated in his presser today that he likes to use his stars as much as possible…He didn’t mention any liabilities of using Felix or Choice besides that they are young rookies…Now there is no excuse to give Choice 5-10 carries a game…or more if he’s going off……and we’re in a comfortable lead…

too much for the style of runner Barber is….We have to bring someone in to help Choice take some carries from Barber or we will be looking for a new starting RB in a couple of yrs. sure we lose an explosive player….Austin too for a few weeks at least. Those two have probably been our two best big-play players in 2008. Yes, we have playmakers, and
i’m not saying that we don’t, but losing Felix’s potential 10+ touches means that we either:
1. give barber more touches (challenge: wearing him out!/no fresh legs in the 4th Q)
2. give choice more touches (challenge: untested)
3. throw more (challenge: unbalanced Offense)
Throwing to RWII and TO are good alternatives but would require a change to what we were hoping to do with the Cat back. Perhaps it is a move back to last year’s Offense. I just worry about MB3’s stamina come December and, God help us, January on.
…maybe those reverses and quick outs will be a more prominent part of the Offense. I do like those short passes that function as 2-3 yard running plays.

The Choice is clear
Gotta go with more touches for the rookie to keep MBIII as fresh as possible. We lose the HR threat, but should do just as well with ball control, moving the chains. I’d suggest 8+ touches per game, mostly between the 30s. I’d rather do this than scan the waiver wire for a released vet. Those guys are released for a reason.
On kickoffs, go with Stanback until Pacman returns, then use him.

I like Choice and think he will answer the challenge. He runs hard and is not a fumbler. We have got to run the ball. The playoffs go though Giant Stadium and its windy as hell. Even more so when the opponents have the ball because they open the gates and let the wind in.
Choice knows he is the next man up and if he is at home he is probably in the living room working on his blitz pickup right now.

Felix had...
30 touches in 4 1/2 games he played in ( I don’t say 5 1/2 because he didn’t touch the ball in the 1st Redskins game) That’s about 6-7 touches per game…
I wouldn’t mind getting Choice around 5 touches a game. If they don’t want him pass blocking, put him on the field in running situations near the middle of the field then. Also, we can use more empty backfield looks if you don’t want him blocking, and put 1 TE (witten) or 2 TE’s (witten and bennett) on the field with 3 WR’s… (t.o, roy e., and stanback)
If Barber is exhausted by the 4th quarter, we are taking away the best part of his game in being the FINISHER.
Consider me Pro-Choice as well ym

Kick/Punt Returns
Crayton is Mr. Reliable back on punts, I’m not so sure I’d rather have a 4 week rested Pacman back there running side to side 60 yards for a 2 yard gain. Crayton gets about 8-10 yards every time, and catches the ball cleanly, which is fine by me.
Kick returns should have Stanback in there with either Jenkins or Scandrick. Both returned punts and kicks in college, and apprently both could find the endzone. I’d say who is lower on the depth chart between the two, and the player getting less reps with the defense will get more reps on the Kickoff Team.

Fair Catches are
better than A) fumbles or B) running around side to side waiting for one of our special teamers to get a block in the back.
Pacman has way more upside, but Crayton has (knocking on wood) never fumbled on a punt. And I personally feel like our block in the back penalties increase exponentially as Pac runs around for 5-6 seconds after he catches it to go nowhere.

Will you guys please get off this nonsense that Pacman shouldn't be the damn Punt Returner...please
He’s the best damn punt returner in the game….He knows what he’s doing back there…..He can come off the streets tomorrow and still take one to the house……You saw a very limited portion of his game…and I blame any poor return of his primarily on the terrible block/punt return unit we throw out there each week…c’ mon now….Where are the Austin backers defending his terrible returns in recent past ???…He averaged 13 yards on Kick Off returns for pete’s sake……Every GREAT return man dances around back there looking for that right lane to shoot up…..Unfortunately, This return unit has NO friggin clue how to block for kicks…..I’d rather have Pacman running east and west 50 yards and ending up with a two yard gain, than see Mr. “Fair Catch” Crayton back there……….

3 punt fumbles???
Can you show me a link to that? I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I don’t remember them, nor can I find statistical proof of that…
I do have tangible evidence, however, that that crayton averages 11 yards on 7 returns, while AJ averages 5 yards on 16 returns… if this was 2 years ago, this wouldn’t even be a discussion, but its not… Therefore, I’m sticking to my opinion that it might be a better option to leave what is working

He has 3 on punt returns. Granted, he does have a lot less than Pacman, who has fumbled 8 times on only 12 more returns (10 total, including kick returns), but has never lost one. Stats taken from NFL.com.

Crayton has had 14 return opportunities.
Pacman didn’t have any fair catches, as he seems much more willing to take a chance than Crayton, which is why he is more dangerous. So, on 7 punts, Crayton got 6 more yards than Pacman’s average, and on 7 he got 5 yards less. I’d rather have a guy back there that is willing to take some chances and has the potential to make a big play.

More dangerous to fumble the punt
Or to cut back and forth until Dallas gets called for a block in the back. Pac showed that he can’t get it done with our ST. Maybe its on him, or maybe it’s on the ST coach (probably). But either way, I’m not excited about him returning punts anymore.

+1... last 3 seasons returning punts...Crayton calls a fair catch 44.6% < Pacman 13%
Crayton 3 returns over 20 yards < Pacman 11 returns over 20 yards
Crayton average per return 9.0 < Pacman 10.0 per return
Craytons returns for TD’s 0 < Pacman 4

I’d be on board 100%, but I have confidence in our offense. We don’t need to be risky on punt returns.

Lunch Break
Nick, Derek and Josh actually had what I thought was a great idea for PacMan. They mentioned he was a surly person to deal with in interviews and believed his problem was maturity, and wasn’t that popular with the players. To make sure he’s learned his lesson in humility, they suggested he be put in to cover kicks.
I can take or leave him, regardless of how talented his is, but if he’s going to play, hand him the equivalent of the mop and bucket and tell him to earn his spot.

retraction...He wasn't a all american RB...He was Georgia conference "Player of the Year"
played both ways as a CB and RB….rushing for 1,850 yards his senior season at Westlake High School in Atlanta, GA.
I would have no problem at all putting Pacman in on some of those Lombardi sweeps…….as fast as Felix and just as shifty…..alot smaller though…..He’s more of a Steve Slaton type RB frame…..no bad at all..
Although I doubt Garrett has the creativity or the balls to use him in this capacity……

Man Crush
Your man crush on Pacman is unhealthy. Despite what he did two year ago his stats from this year are average. I like the depth he provides but Jenkins has been improving weekly and is more reliable. He is a cover corner. His Giant wiff(pun intended) was ugly but rookies get a few breaks on screw ups. If you really want a big hitter we could put Roy Williams at corner.

Not so special teams
oops. I think the special team problems starts at the top and goes all the way down.
Craytons numbers are better with every thing else being the same. I dont like depending on a guy that is undependable.
I also wonder about what someone else wrote about. Do we indeed get more penalties blocking for Pacman than Crayton.

Sure 11 is better than 5
But it will never be much more than that. Crayton has 7 returns for 78 yards. 33 yards in 1 return. So the other 6 returns got him 45 yards. So that there is 7.5 yards.
So you’re basically gaining a few yards per return, with NO CHANCE for a TD…or taking a few yards less per, and having a chance of a TD every time he touches the ball.
I’ll take option #2.

But...
AJ was also a shut down corner 2 years ago, is he shut down now? NO
AJ could take any punt to the house 2 years ago, can he now? NO
I saw the fumble stats on Crayton, (thank you for the link), and look when the punt fumbles were. Being 3-4 years ago.
Huff I completely respect your opinion, and I understand what your saying. But it’s my personal opinion that, Pacman running back and forth like an idiot on punt returns is going to result in more block in the back penalties than Crayton’s avg punt return (which is higher than Pac’s)
Personally, I hope Pacman messes up again before he even gets a chance to put the Dallas jersey on again. I was one of the biggest advocates for the signing, but the guy just doesn’t deserve to be in the NFL. He’s a waste of talent. He could be great, but he’d rather go get drunk, start fights, and sit in strip clubs all night then he would putting his nose in a playbook and sacrificing these nights for the good of his teammates who he should look at like family. I, for one, could do without a personality like, because I know and see the heart that other players have on this team. And if i was sacrificing my everyday for the team, I would want everyone that i’m sacrificing for to be doing the exact same thing for me. Is he really going to do this… only time will tell… but I’m going to have to go with…. NO WAY

How can you possibly expect a player to be the same after being away from the game for basically a season and a half
Just think what he could do for us if he stayed out of trouble (big if) in 2 years. He’s young, and supremely talented.
If you think that every team in professional sports don’t have guys that bust their tail everyday, and also have guys that don’t do what most others on their team do, you’re not paying attention. It happens everyday, on every team, in every professional sport.
I can’t argue with you about the off the field stuff, because he’s not proven that he can stay away from it. But here’s the 3 things that make me glad he’s coming back.
1. He’s cheap
2. He could pay HUGE dividends in a few years
3. Jerry says so
It’s Jerry’s money, and everyone knows that Jerry’s money is like his blood.
