K.C. Joyner: Not All 6-4 Records are Created Equal
In this week's chat, K.C. Joyner and I discuss strength of schedule and how history suggests that Dallas' tough division will improve its post season chances -- if it can get there. We also discuss Wade Phillips late fades and emerging cornerbacks.

I don't mind it
and even if I did, I’m not that much of a control freak to try to make someone stop doing something I didn’t personally like.

No, that someone was "1st" to spot a blog entry and felt the need to write "first!" Want a cookie?

It's tradition? Among gossip blogs. BTB is an areana for football discussion, not petty counting contests!

This is a BSR tradition, and BSR was not a gossip blog.

BSR and now this site are the only blogs I read, so I've never seen it anywhere else
But if you read TMZ and Perez Hilton, I guess that’s your problem.

On hundreds of sites across the internet, it’s a common, slightly annoying, sophomoric habit. It may have seemed like a tradition on the other site, but honestly, with how many other places it’s done, is it really a tradition worth keeping?
However, the worst thing is on sites like this one where the comments are threaded, so off-topic replies to a “first post” take up the majority of the space before you can scroll down to the real comments. So this is the last time I intend to contribute to that problem, and I suggest others who dislike the practice do the same.

T.O.
DMN has their weekly FO piece up, and one of their topics is TO’s production. My post is not about whether FO sucks, and why KC is better, it’s just about TO. What gives – can it all be explained by not having Romo for an extended period? Can this really be the same receiver that just at the beginning of this season we were reading posts on BSR about his uncoverability?

TO’s is just saying what most of us where saying (at least on the BSR) when we saw the offense sputter. He just tells what he sees.

Pardon my ignorance...
…but what is FO and KC?
Thanks!

Back on topic.....
Very interesting interview. It was really cool to hear how various corners around the league are disappointments this year.

About SOS
Interesting findings by KC. I’d like to see some of the hard numbers, but it does seem to lay to rest the idea that the teams in tough divisions just beat each other up all year which weakens them during the playoffs.

Just like last year
when the Giants got beat up all the way to the SuperBowl

Good Stuff as Always
I like Joyner’s work, but it seems his strength of schedule work is not as comprehensive or as well integrated as the Sagarin ratings, which were developed over two decades ago.
Rather than just looking at a team’s record in context with their division, Sagarin creates a complete mathematical matrix of every game, taking into account adjusted margins of victory and whether it was a road or home game.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/nfl08.htm
From what I’ve seen, it’s the best overall evaluation of a teams’ performance.
Which is not to say K.C.‘s work doesn’t have value. It does. He did the research to identify where Super Bowl winners have come from, which to my knowledge has not been done with Sagarin ratings. What would be worthwhile to see is if Sagarin data is a better predictor than simple won-lost records.
