TNew
great stuff as always.
interesting that he thinks Holmgren is gonna to go after TNew. I can see TNew being considered a weakness just looking at his ypa, but there’s some context to the metrics, namely he hasn’t been healthy in most of the games he’s played in. Although he’s still complaining of lingering groin problems now, when shadowing Moss two weeks ago he was able to hold him to 5 catches for 29 yards out of 11 targets to Moss, and he was widely credited as being the crux of a much improved defense by being able to take Moss out of the game one-on-one thus freeing up a safety to help stop Portis. Assuming TNew was covering Moss for all those targets, that’s a 2.6 ypa for that game. plus an INT. The difference of course was that he was feeling fully healthy, although the scheme could have played into it as well, since he may be stronger at press/man coverage and it was the first time he played it throughout a game all season. So I just wonder if Holmgren would look at his metrics over the season and attack him as the weak spot, or look at his more recent and healthy performance against the Skins and avoid him since he basically shut down a top receiving threat.
I guess we’ll see Thursday! I hope his groin is healing and he’ll be okay on this short week. gotta give him credit for playing through it, but I hope he doesn’t keep re-aggravating it so it lingers into December and January…

Coaches watch film, not YPA
If they go after TNEW, its because they think he is hurt or because he is playing off the ball. Either way they lack the weapons to make it work
Seattle has some smart vet recievers, but they lack the speed of even an older Isaac Bruce. Sad, but true is that Seattle’s top WR is Bobby Engram with 256 yards, no TDs and a season long play of 21 yards. If you throw out his one good play of the season, Korren Robinson has 155 yard, 1 TD, no plays of over 20 yards, an average catch of 8.5 yards and his best game consisted of 5 carches for 38 yards
Good luck with the go after Newman plan.

Even a dog has his day
Korren Robinson’s one big play was a 90 yard romp verse Philly. It was a blown assignment and he made the play and they got their one score in what otherwise was a 26-7 route.
Seattle’s passing game is bad. They don’t even have a very good underneath game. They have a decent TE and that is about it.

But what they do have
is a very good QB. As always, the secondary will only be as good as the pass rush.

He is an average QB who is playing badly.
When his team had a great o-line and running game he put up respectable numbers, but he has never been a game changing QB. This year he has been horrible. Detroit and the Raiders have had better QBing this year then Seattle.
His QB rating this season is 54.9. He has an averaged about 5.5 yards per attempt. He has thrown 9 Int to 5 TDs. His longest completion went for 34 yards, most of which was YAC. Those are Brad Johnson numbers.
Seattle would be fooling to overlook their need at QB with tis early draft pick that they are earning.

That's a fair point
But you’d could say the same for most QBs – when the line and WRs struggle, they look bad as well. I admit I don’t watch him much, but when i have he seems to be quite good.
Wjatever it is, I hope it continues for at least one more week.

Off topic, but my question made Inside the Huddle tonight.
I was super stoked. I asked who on the team had the hottest girlfriend. Martellus said Tank did and Folk chimed in with Romo.
1. Tank? Of all people?
2. Yes, Nick Folk was on Inside the Huddle. Great star quality.
Where will you be when the Sixers hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy? Hopefully Liberty Ballers.

Nice interview again
As a bonus Dallas faces the poorest pair of starting DT they will face this year. Rocky Bernard and Brandon Mebane are below average NFL starters.
As KC said, who ever mans the OG spot this week will have their easiest start of the remaining season.

a good game to roll Holland and see how he handles
before the DTs get tougher

Maybe that played into the decision?

If I recall...
When Dallas played at Seattle in the playoffs their cornerbacks were out injured. They called up Pete Hunter from the street, for crying out loud! That didn’t help at all, as Dallas never really pressed the Seattle defensive backfield.
I hope Jason Genious decides to go after them at their weakest…

True….Part of that was that Parcells was being a stuborn SOB and deciding to hang his hat on J Jones and the running game.
In this case all we are hoping for is they are not able to exploit our weakness at OG.

Holy crap Batman! Holland didn't fall off the planet after all...
Could he be any weaker at the point of attack than Proctor?
by Keys80 on Nov 26, 2008 10:14 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Not weaker, but likely slower
The Seattle DT have 9 sacks if you include the backups. That is not half bad. There reputation indicates that they get their pass rush by beating OG and Centers to the gaps, not by bull rushing lineman back to the QB. They have also given up a lot of running yards.
If Holland is more powerful, but slower then Proctor then he maybe less effective in pass protection this week. That said, I agree with others that this is the week to introduce a new linemen if we are going to make a switch.
by Trey, on Nov 26, 2008 10:33 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Trey
His line on Holland before we taped was “he’s Joe Average.” So I asked him, “how does Joe Average compare to Cory Proctor” and he laughed and said, “even Joe Average is much better than Proctor. Proctor is awful.”
I think we all agree on that last point. Hey, you’ve got to try Holland sooner or later, and would you rather do it tomorrow, or against the Eagles, Giants, Steelers or Ravens’ lines? Those last four have size and they’re going to run a lot of games at you.
I don’t know if Holland is slower. Look, he gave up 1.5 sacks last year in 16 games. That tied for best on Denver’s line. They run zone and Dallas runs man, but that’s in run blocking. Holland would be a leaky boat if he could not move laterally.
by Rafael Vela on Nov 26, 2008 11:29 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Holland is a big man
I don’t know that he is slower laterally, and it is not hard to think any NFL quality lineman is an upgrade over Protors worse. I like making a switch, I am just not sure that Seattle was as well positioned to exploit Protor as many other teams.
by Trey, on Nov 26, 2008 3:23 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
And his mobility is really only an issue
when he pulls in the run game. He can do OK in pass blocking even if he’s a little slow because he really doesn’t have to move as much as the OT.

Holland's real sin in Denver?
Oops, meant to finish without hitting enter… His only sin that I recall was reporting to camp overweight for Denver’s ‘Kneecapper’ zone scheme. I thought his feet were actually not a liability. Proctor just doesn’t impress me at all.
by Keys80 on Nov 26, 2008 5:28 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Right
I don’t think Porctor was a strength in either running or passing. he just made the team very right handed.

being right handed
wouldn’t be a bad thing if it was due to his strength at the right side. but because of his ineptness on the left, we became right handed.
i agree wholeheartedly. i wish we could play to a strength instead of playing away from a glaring weakness.
I commented. You're welcome.

scottmaui,
KC also said TNew had a horrendous game against SF.. Funny, because all I saw was Henry getting toasted…guess I missed the TNew toasting.
Key, who said Holland was slower?
by rha on Nov 26, 2008 10:39 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
rha,
I agree with you. I missed Newman as toast… I thought Newman had a pretty good game against SF, and I was seeing Henry struggling a bit more out there (obviously except that gift of an interception he was given)
I think the key to Seattle is going to be how the Dallas defense stops the run of Morris and Jones.
Who are they’re starters now at WR anyways?
John Carlson, Bobby Engram, and a gimpy Deion Branch?
P.S. Raf if I remember correctly, weren’t you saying back in March that you were big on DT Red Bryant from Texas A&M who got drafted by Seattle in I believe the 3rd round. I was interested in seeing how he played, b/c I trust your opinion and all, but it doesn’t look like he’s going to take the field due to an ankle injury…

Koren Robinson has actually started/played more games than Branch.

Newman had an awful first quarter against SF
Bruce caught a 19 yard deep in againt him on the first drive and a 35-40 go route on him on the second drive. Hill got hit and his pass hung in the air forever, but Bruce found it and caught it. Newman never got sight of the ball, where he had an easy chance to bat it down.
He got much better after that but he had about 60 yards against him after about 6 minutes of game.

Roy Williams #38
I know we like to blame Roy #38 former #31 for his lack of coverage skills in the secondary, and I agree he has been pretty bad. But I’m not sure that I’m ready to throw Roy to the wolves just yet. I mean he’s only 28 years old. I think Roy’s downfall has been the lack of consistent play from any Free Safety since Woody. This hasn’t allowed Roy to play closer to the line which has been his bread n butter.
I compared some of Roy’s stats to Troy Polamalu’s and their not that different. The main difference is Polamalu has always played on a defense with a consistent FS and Pass Rush. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Roy is better than Polamalu.
I guess what I’m trying to say is I think Roy has a few more good years left in him. However, does anyone else think he would benefit tremendously by dropping 10 or 12 Pounds !?
by Prime-Time on Nov 26, 2008 12:22 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I would of never signed him to his last deal
The guy is stiff in the hips, slow and a straight ahead player, cant cover anyone. write this date down, June 1st, 2009, the day the cowboys rid themselves of this spare of a player, Roy couldn’t cover a cardboard cutout of himself..

No offense, but Polamalu has better range than RW1.

I'm Ready to Cut the Cord
Roy’s tackling is awful, or it was last year. He doesn’t wrap up. He tries the kill shot on guys and either whiffs or bounces off.
And he has a huge contract.
And he’s not getting any faster. He’s had borderline speed and the second he loses that full step, well, he’s a $6 M special teams player.
Dallas needs another S who can run and cover. Thong can’t run.

You don't think losing an extra 10 or 12 pounds would help?

If it included his head
I’d say maybe…

He lost 10 to 12 extra pounds last year
and played better the first month. And then started making all his bad habits.
He needs a lot more than a modest weight loss.
And why does a big ticket “leader” of your defense need to be told to lose weight?
His thin skinned response to the off-season criticism told me he’s not worth the trouble. He was lucky enough to get a 2nd contract out of Jerry. He’s got no complaints.
The rest of us have suffered enough. Give us a real playmaker at SS.

Geez Raf
Why don’t you say how you really feel about Roy… lol
I agree though, he’s reached his pinnacle 3 years ago and is certainly on the way down…

He's a good backup to have around if we sign someone.
Expensive, but we’d eat his contract anyways.
I want to say that he could play on Sp. Teams, but he’s probably too slow!

cut him after june 1st next year and the cowboys could spread the signing bonus out over two eyars
I think it would be about 2 million a year for two years

The downfall of 31
If I had to pinpoint the exact moment it all started to go downhill it was in the ’04 preseason against the Titans where Roy went for one of his patented killshots against Chris Brown except that Brown was having none of it and shrugged him off like he was a beeotch on his way to the end zone.
