Because Good Season Are Never Easy

When you have 52 young guys with big money and bigger egos, something always goes wrong:

Giants star wide receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg and was hospitalized, according to a report on Foxsports.com.

Details of the incident were not immediately available, but other reports said that the shooting occurred at a nightclub..

Submitted without comment.  Keith Davis and Adam Jones prevent me from moralizing.

Raf, if plax is gone for the year

do you think the gints have any other WR who could serve as playmakers? I think that if def load up against the run the gints may not be able to make them pay on a consistent basis. The strategy would be to make sheli beat the def and slow down the running game.

He will need to be good enough to command a double team at least 50% of the time

otherwise it will affect their running game and that will impact their def.

I don't see Plaxico being a Giant much longer

I think they’ll let him go. Just too many problems, and Jerry Jones isn’t their owner.

They just signed him to a big contract

Unless there is a safety clause for them, they’re going to get hit in the purse if they release him.

If he truely caused the problems they say he had over the past few years

With something like 50-60 team fines, I’d bet there’s some sort of clause.

Maybe Plaxico was showing different shotgun formations at the time of the shooting

just a shot in the dark…

late night, GUNs and nightclubs, there’s a good combo, I cant fore see any trouble there…

The Giants are getting pretty tired of this guy, after giving him a new deal, they’ll probably rid themselves of him after the season..

haha

reading ESPN comments …. watching all the Giants fans talk crap about how “they got the 1 seed locked up” and “we don’t need Plax” ….. ignorance is bliss, isn’t it?

by what_the_crap on Nov 29, 2008 12:15 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

do they?

do they need Plax? I don’t think he’s contributed much at all this season, and they’re what, 9-1? They aren’t missing Shockey any either. They’re the best team in football with the #1 rushing offense.

by Joey2zs on Nov 29, 2008 12:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

exactly, They didn't have Plax or Jacobs last week in Arizona

Hixon is ready to step in for Plax. what a great find he’ has been ….

by Deke on Nov 29, 2008 12:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

one

game doesn’t prove that they don’t need him. Especially a one dimensional team like Arizona. They can’t run the ball, and the Giants have the best pass rush in the league.

by what_the_crap on Nov 29, 2008 12:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No several games

that’s why he’s a star in the making. Hixon is beast and so is this running game. Load up against the run and Eli will make people pay with his newfound accuracy and poise. And with a 10-1 record, 2 games better than everyone, the #1 is all but locked up. If the Giants go 2-3 and you guys run the table, we still win with the better divisional record.

by ProudYankee on Nov 29, 2008 12:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Eli's new found accuracy and poise

Is a product of his offensive line. Granted he cut down big time on dumb mistakes, but his offensive line gives almost any quarterback enough time to pick apart a defense. He is by no means bad, but he will never be the playmaker his brother is.

by witten82 on Nov 29, 2008 12:58 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Possibly

but he is the leader his brother is. That’s all I give a shit about. Surround him w playmakers and he shouldn’t have to do much but be a leader.

by ProudYankee on Nov 29, 2008 1:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Sure he's a leader

He’s an NFL quarterback.

But don’t even think for a second he’s the leader his brother is.

by mhuff13 on Nov 29, 2008 1:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Lol

Ok mhuff13. This team doesn’t win a superbowl last year w/o him becoming a LEADER. And then he proceeded to go 10-1 as the starter the next season. He is a LEADER and of story. Those TD drives in Feb def made that a FACT.

by ProudYankee on Nov 29, 2008 1:09 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The great thing is

many of the vets are gone on this team, and alot of the talent is young. So Eli being in his 5th yr obviously is a leader to the kids. He’s not looking up to anyone anymore.

by ProudYankee on Nov 29, 2008 1:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Eli is a good QB

but the leadership ont he team came from the Coach and the D. He did his part and did it well, but he’s not what moves the Giants.

by mhuff13 on Nov 29, 2008 8:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I said he is a leader

Just nowhere near his brother, which you said he was.

And don’t get me started about the TD drives in Feb. He should have thrown 3 int on that last TD drive. And Tyree bailed him out of his absolutely unforgivable heave into triple coverage.

by mhuff13 on Nov 29, 2008 1:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Unforgivable?

Almost like the INT Romo threw last yr in JAn? Lol That’s unforgivable. What Eli did was unforgettable.

by ProudYankee on Nov 29, 2008 1:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So a last second desperation pass is unforgivable?

No it was the only play we had.

What Tyree did was unforgettable. What Eli did was, well very Eli-like.

by mhuff13 on Nov 29, 2008 1:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

How could you say that about Romo's pick

It was a last play desperate call. He had to throw it in the endzone and obviously there was gonna be a swarm of blue shirts around there. What was unforgivable was the previous play in which Crayton stopped running his route on Romo’s perfectly placed lead pass into the endzone.

by witten82 on Nov 29, 2008 1:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh

I forgot about that play. Same thing for ELi though! You think we coud’ve afforded a sack at that stage of the game. I’m pretty sure it was 3rd down. You have to put that ball up especially if you see your man coming across the field. BTW Harrison was the only one who mae the tackle, if it was 3riple coverage he would have been smashed in three diff directions

by ProudYankee on Nov 29, 2008 1:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I know you're a homer, just like I am for Dallas

But any non-homer knows that Eli was a bus driver for that team. He road the coattails of an absolutely legendary run by the defense to a ring.

Giants are thee best road team, since the opening game of the season last year when they lost to dallas, the Giants have lost one game on the road since regular season and playoffs. They dont miss Shockey, or Tiki or Strahan..They’re thee best all around football team in the league right now with the best offensive line in the game.

Well see

I guess. The Skins are stout in the secondary, and if we need to pass, we’ll see the difference he creates, personally watching ALL the Jints games this year, his lack of production is disgusting, and I don’t care about the double cover crap, several times he can’t beat people down the field (WHICH IS HIS PRIMARY PURPOSE). Let’s see what some hungry young wideouts do w this opp.

I Was Wondering This Morning

How could Dallas win the division? The Giants would have to collapse, and lose all three divisional games, plus one other to end up 11-5. The Redskins need to beat them, then stumble on their schedule. And the Eagles need to beat them, but allow us to beat the Eagles, so we can end up with the same 11-5 record. We would own the tiebreaker over the Giants for the best divisional record (4-2 versus 3-3).

Then I thought, no way the Giants lose four out of five down the stretch. Eli and Justin and Plax would have to be knocked out for the season.

But then again, everything has gone right this year for the Giants, so maybe they’re due for a rough stretch. Probably not lose four of five, but then again, you never know.

by kindablue on Nov 29, 2008 12:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Forget the division, we're not catching the giants

Dallas has to hope for a Giants this week in Washington and hope for the Panthers to win their games in their division. Dallas has a poor conference record, that’s where we need help. We cant afford loses to the giants and Eagles..

i think plexiglass is an idiot...

but this is why i think gestapo goodell has too much power….

plexiglass has already been suspended and disciplined several times….that’s fine….

but shooting himself? i’m anxious to see how this plays out. shooting yourself isn’t necessarily a crime. but maybe discharging a firearm in public is. shooting yourself in the leg i don’t think necessarily embarrasses the league. it’ll be interesting to see how they spin it. if they spin it that he’s just got too many infractions and something has to be done, i might be able to roll with that. but if they trying to turn him into the D.C. sniper or some dangerous criminal because he was dumb enough to shot himself, I’d have a problem with that.

this impacts us because we play these guys soon. and as well as they’ve been playing, I still think possibly not having one of your best players hurt. but then again, they’ve been a lot better at dealing with stuff like this than us.

it also impacts us because we’ve got a group of people on this team who i could see doing something like this. plax’s case might set a precedent that we may need to monitor in the future.

and btw, if this was T.O. the world would stop to report this. only T.O. has never done anything like this. that’s the difference between a big mouth and an idiot. T.O. has a big mouth. But Plax is certainly the more embarassing of the two.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the giants suspend him

before the Goodell makes his decision after an investigation..

I agree here

I think they will also.

all joking aside

the good news for Plax as a person is that it does seem to be a minor injury, just a graze.

by scottmaui on Nov 29, 2008 1:32 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That definitely is good

Maybe it will be a wakeup call for him

Would like to see him out for the season any way we can get it.

But Tank wasn't stupid enough to bring them out in public.

He was stupid enough to have a snitch over his residence, which led to search warrants.

exactly...

actually the cops weren’t even looking for him….they were looking for his friend…..and then used that as an excuse to search his house….sigh….why that should even be legal is another discussion for another day…

Still to be seen if it translates to the field for the Giants

And McNabb’s benching sure seemed to spark them to right the ship on the field, for 1 game at least.

Blah.

1) The Giants will keep on winning. They’ve been doing it so far. No Plax? No problem. Hell, they won last week without Jacobs. They will still win the East.

2) Whatever happened to going to a nightclub to have a good time? Now it seems the only thing that can be found at the club is a fist-fight and/or shootouts.

does anybody else have the confidence that i do?

that if this team plays like it can, which isnt a sure thing….There’s no need to be scare of the Giants, you know?….Even though they kicked our ass, if anybody on earth besides BJ and Bollinger was our QB we had a good shot to win that game and that was with everybody and they’re f’n dog injured…

I think we will win in the Meadowlands in January

And that obviously assumes my confidence in getting TO the playoffs.

I don't like to group all fans together..

But I’ve been reading the Giants blog, and they are acting like they are so classy. Like none of their fans have came into our blog and talked crap on our players. Now I know the one’s posting about being classy aren’t the one’s who write negative on our threads, but they should be aware there are always gonna be those fans, and not an entire fan base should be stereotyped.

Who cares what the Giants fans think?

They’re a bunch of arrogant pricks. They’re the same fans who actually thought they were the best team in the NFL last year. The only one of them I give any credit to is their D-coordinator. The league will adjust to his schemes and they will return to their rightful place as a .500 team.

I hear you on this. I do try to insist that my folks at BBV show some maturity, especially when dealing with fans from other teams. Debate between fans of opposing teams can be fun as long s it doesn’t get mean-spirited and juvenile. I know ‘ProudYankee’ has been over here going back and forth with you guys on this thread, and I’m actually looking through to make sure he behaved himself. Believe me, I don’t want our fans to come off like we think we are better people than fans of any other team. I just want guys to act like grown-ups.

You may get your wish ...

Here’s an excerpt from the NY Daily News website story on the incident:

The state of Florida issued him a concealed weapon permit that expired in May. Even if it had been renewed, it wouldn’t be recognized by authorities in New York or New Jersey.

C'mon raul he may get arrested

but I doubt he sees jail time unless the gints cut him. Also the trial will be post-poned until after the season unless he is suspended by the team or the league.

Not to Worry

Goodell will give him a stern lecture, then wish him well to rejoin his high revenue generating team. Giants and Patriots don’t have much to worry about, but if you play for a small market team, expect the book to be thrown at you. Then Goodell is a real tough guy.

by kindablue on Nov 30, 2008 9:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The Giants will suspend him first

the Giants already suspended him once this year

They get it, unlike Jerry who makes excuses for his players when they get in trouble.

OK, beyond Pacman - who Jerry Jones knew would be handled by the principal

himself – wh oneeded suspension and was pardoned by Jerry? Remember that this team has had no arrests or convictions in several years.

by dunkman on Nov 30, 2008 11:37 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yes but the cowboys have wasted numerous picks on players that clearly have had off the field issues that Jerry ignored

untill Bill Parcells came aboard and changed the scouting department and organization from top to bottom and made character a key point when drafting players.

I dont think you have to sell your soul to try to win a championship by taking on players like Pac-rat or ego maniac prima dona receivers that are more trouble than they’re worth.

I'm trying to think

Who are all those guys? You may be thinking about the Bengals. Jerry does not have a history of problem children, at least disproportionately to the rest of the league.

Deke why would jj suspend pacman and

forfeit the other draft pick he gets from the titans when the comish suspends him? I think that played into his decision

yeah, I dont doubt that played into it

I just don’t like it when jerry makes excuses, it was nothing, when clearly it was..

I wish jerry would put his foot down once in awhile and make a stand and send a message to the team that this kind of conduct off the field will not be tolerated..

New York has the toughest gun penalties in the nation

Plaxico wil be arrested sometime today and could face up to five years in prison. Goodell will conduct an investigation into the incident and I believe he will be suspended, but the giants, unlike Jerry the enabler who was running decoy with the Pac-rat incident, will suspend Plaxico first, for conduct detrimental to the team.

Plax at a minimum

should be suspended by the NFL.

He is a three time loser this year.

NY gun laws are very tough. He is looking at a minimum of 3.5 years. will most likley plea bargain and get reduced.

Big hit against the cap. No way the Giants cut him. The Gmen talk all this BS in NY papers. The cap hit will kiill them.

To proudyankee and all the Gmen fans I hope they play Hixon in place of Plax. No way does he have the same impact as Plax.

by oneforthethumb on Nov 30, 2008 9:46 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree that cutting him will be a hardship but they prepared for that with his contract terms

As long as the Giants’ Oline gives Eli time to throw, they’ll be just fine with Hixon. They run first anyway, and then leverage the play-action, all behind excellent protection. Plax being out of the line up will not change that formula substantially.

According to the NY Post:

Read the story HERE

Records show the New York Giants’ star receiver does not have a permit to carry a weapon in the city, meaning that he had no legal right to do so in the LQ Club in Manhattan, where he allegedly shot himself in the leg.

Burress did have a concealed-weapon permit issued to him in Florida, where he has a home, but records show it expired in May.

And even if it was still valid, New York does not recognize out-of-state permits.

Not good.

Giants' Burress will surrender to authorities as early as tomorrow

Newark Star-Ledger

Giants WR Plaxico Burress will surrender to authorities when requested — without a warrant — and will address his legal issues as early as tomorrow, according to the lawyer who will be representing him, Benjamin Brafman.

I don't see how he gets out of jail time

Mandatory 3.5 years is the law, no exceptions. I don’t think authorities will be letting him go. Otherwise, how many other felons will have an excuse to appeal sentences already imposed. JMO
