Hypothetical: Romo for MVP?
Hypothetical ...
Let's say Dallas closes the season on an absolute tear, lead of course by continued stellar play by Tony Romo.
With no real stand-out MVP favorites, is Romo a legit candidate for MVP even though he missed 3 games to injury? (3 games, which, if anything, kind of highlighted how valuable he really is.)
Here's the candidates I most often hear thrown out there, although I may be forgetting someone:
--
Drew Brees: Completing 66% of passes for 3,870 yards; 24/14 TD/INT; 95.4 Rating
Pros: Threatening Marino's record ... absolutely crazy production.
Cons: Saints aren't going to the playoffs. Next.
--
Brett Favre Completing 68.7% of passes for 2,708 yards; 20/14 TD/INT; 90.4 Rating
Pros: He's Brett Favre, the Jets are one of the best teams in the AFC, and the numbers speak for themselves. Has the Steve Nash "look how much better the team got after I joined" effect. Looks like he has a lot of fun out there.
Cons: Pretty good numbers, but not GREAT. Jets rely heavily on the run game.
--
Kerry Collins Completing 58.5% of passes for 2,125 yards; 9/4 TD/INT; 81.9 Rating
Pros: Last undefeated in the league. "Manages the game well."
Cons: Completing 58.5% of passes for 2,125 yards; 9/4 TD/INT; 81.9 Rating ... (FWIW, Eli has better numbers across the board, plays for a better team, IMO, and no one is talking about him for MVP.)
--
Clinton Portis 4.8 ypc for 1,228 yards (2nd in NFL); 7 TD, 1 Fumble
Pros: He's the poster boy for the Redskins success, and deservedly so.
Cons: Redskins are slipping of late and he's been hurt. Late struggles do not an MVP make.
--
Kurt Warner Completing 68.4% of passes for 3,741 yards; 24/11 TD/INT; 99.4 Rating
Pros: Hey, those numbers are really good! Can make a good argument for him with all the "most valuable" criteria that are out there.
Cons: Could be hurt by playing for the Cardinals, let's be honest.
--
And here's how Romo stacks up:
Completing 64% of passes for 2,559 yards; 21/8 TD/INT; 103.2 Rating
(He's third in yards per game ... I realized too late that I should've done averages.)
Pros: He's the man that makes one of the NFL's most dangerous offenses go. Playmaking ability, yada yada. You guys know the story.
Cons: Missed nearly 1/4 of the season to injury. That could be a big deal.
--
The astute Cowboys fan might make the case for Ware over Romo as well ... but here I'll turn it over to the masses.
Does Romo have a shot?

Ware should win Defensive player of the year. For Romo to be MVP Dallas would have to win out with him being the difference in those games. He gets a shot at the national spotlight against the Steelers and Giants. If we can beat the Giants and he has a big game then he has a shot. The problem will be if Brees gets past Marino’s record then theres really no way you can deny him the record. I think you can rule Collins and Farve out of the race. Collins numbers aren’t that good and when they were undefeated you really didn’t here much about it. Farve has been good but has to many INTs they run the ball a lot. Portis won’t be considered if the Redskins don’t make the playoffs and right now thats a long shot plus he’s hurt now. Warner is probably the most deserving but he gets no attention playing in Arizona. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Peyton make a late push he’s played well lately and never rule out the New York media pushing Eli into the mix.

Consider who's doing the voting.....
A little weasel like Mike Lupica is going to definitely vote for Eli, Favre or Warner before he even considers voting for Romo. The Saints were essentially eliminated from the playoffs today so even if he shatters the single season yardage record, Brees winning MVP is pretty much out of the question.
My guess is Favre wins the MVP as long as the Jets take that division. That whole story would be too much of a turn-on for the mediots not to choose Favre as their MVP. If the Jets somehow totally debacled (thanks, Emmitt) the rest of the way, Kurt Warner or Eli probably get the award.

Rookie of the year has to be Matt Ryan
For Right now, I’d say the front runner for league MVP is Kurt Warner, anytime you complete over 68% of your passes and will probably end up with 5000 passing yards for a season
Drew Brees second, His numbers would be even better if the Saints actually had a running game. it’s all on him and you end up forcing ball into coverage causing turnovers because you’re behind. Not making the playoffs is a killer
Brett Favre third, and if the jets win the division, the voters you know will flock to vote for Favre just to throw it in the face of the packer organization for letting him go. madden does cart wheels in the booth if his love child wins….
Eli Manning, although not flashy, leads the best team in the league and because he’s in the same city as Favre, that hurts his chances..

The sentimental favorites
Have to be Favre and Warner, assuming they and their teams keep up their good play.
How can Brees be MVP on a team that doesn’t even make the playoffs? The last player to win the MVP without taking his team to the postseason was Johnny Unitas in 1967, and the Colts were 11-1-2 and missed the playoffs due to a tiebreaker with the 11-1-2 Rams!
Same goes for Portis. No playoffs for Redskins plus his performance has leveled off somewhat as of late, due to injuries.
If the Cowboys win their last four and make the playoffs that is an incredibly strong case for Romo, considering that everyone saw what the team did without him for three games. See, that’s what makes him a perfect candidate. “Most Valuable Player” means he is valuable, and the team wouldn’t be as good without him. I am not convinced that the Cardinals would be gawd-awful with Matt Leinart or the Jets wouldn’t be just as good with Chad Pennington.
Favre and Warner already have multiple MVPs…give this one to Romo!
by DavidH22 on Dec 1, 2008 9:17 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely
If the Cowboys make the playoffs, Romo should be MVP because without him, the Cowboys are not even a .500 team, 7-9 at best.
With him, they are a definite SB contender.

thats not true
The Skins lost their starting qb last season and made the playoffs and I guarantee if Roethlisgerger went down, Leftwich would play well enough were they wouldn’t miss a beat.
The Cowboys are a passing team and need to have that part of their game clicking to win games. Romo is the impetus for that to happen.

Like I said
I think the Cardinals would do halfway decent with Matt Leinart, and frankly I bet the Giants would still be a winning squad if Eli Manning went down and David Carr had to start.
How about this – with Romo starting, not only are the Cowboys 7-2 (1-2 without), but they are averaging 29 points a game with him starting (14 points without) and 398 yards per game (233 yards without).
And we’ve all seen how the Cowboys defense has responded to the team leader returning. It’s these sort of intangibles that have to be considered when choosing a league MVP
by DavidH22 on Dec 1, 2008 9:42 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Carr's a very elegant clipboard holder; nothing more.
Be sensible. Anybody who’s familiar with me knows I don’t think Eli is the end-all be-all but Carr is awful. How awful you ask; well, he managed to shut down Steve Smith who only caught 18 for 141 in Carr’s 4 pitiful starts with Carolina in ‘07. Even promising rookie Matt Moore (smooth move getting rid of him, Leatherface) in his 3 starts was able to hook up with Smith 22 times for 257 yards. The thing is as awful as Carr is I still more or less agree with you that even with him at the helm the Giants would be able to win 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 just because of how dominant they are in the trenches.
Don’t get me wrong; though. I’m with you on Eli. The case for Eli being MVP falls apart for me simply because Aikman never garnered any serious MVP consideration either. While Eli’s final numbers for this season might be prettier than Aikman’s best season ever were; he’s very much the beneficiary of letting that three-headed monster carry the load. Sure, you could say he’s doing all that’s asked of him; but when all that’s asked of him amounts to a mere 15 completions and a 160 yards in half of his team’s games that’s just not enough to call him a most valuable player.
As for Leinart, I think it’s a huge stretch to assume he would have near the success Warner’s having this season. He hasn’t proven a thing yet. There’s a reason he ceded the job to Warner which by the way they tried to hand to him on a silver platter. I think the Cards would be 5-7 at best with him at the helm.
All that being said, if Romo has a great December which he’ll have to for the Cowboys to make the playoffs and ends up right behind Brees and Rivers in TD passes and passer rating after missing three games and playing a few more with a still fairly gimpy pinkie, he does have a very strong case for MVP.
I just don’t think the MVP should necessarily be influenced by how terrible the backup QB is. If that was the case, Steve Young shouldn’t have won the award in ’92 because Joe Montana was still on the roster. Considering the Cowboys stellar supporting cast, I’d still have to determine that Brad Johnson is more of an incompetent QB than Romo is irreplaceable.
If the Cowboys end up 11-5 and the Cards and/or Jets finish 10-6, considering the murderers’ row he’s facing down the stretch, Romo would deserve as much consideration for MVP as anybody.
Sadly though we must remember it’s the silly little sportswriters ultimately deciding the league’s MVP and we know how level-headed and unsentimental the lot of them can be.

An imperfect historical comparison
The Cowboys last NFL MVP was Emmitt Smith in 1993, readers may recall that he missed two games (and parts of a couple others), and the Dallas offense was not the same when he was gone. In fact they started off 0-2, then finished 12-4, including winning their last five games. Emmitt was an absolute beast on that regular-season ending run.
Again, if Romo somehow leads the team to some sort of similar finish and keeps performing like he is statistically, he will force the voters to choose him as the 2008 National Football League Most Valuable Player.
Of course, if the team stumbles down the stretch or if Romo plays like a mere mortal against four fantastically difficult defenses, then yes the award will go to probably Brett Favre.

It would be hard to argue against either player
The Falcons have made a truly miraculous comeback. I don’t think that any player has ever won NFL Rookie of the Year and NFL MVP since Earl Campbell in 1978.
That said, both would be long shots.
I’d say Mike Smith is a shoo-in for coach of the year but Tony Sparano is right there too.

Romo is not worthy of it
Usually MVPs help improve teams drastically, Dallas will finish with a worse record this year than last year.
Warner won’t win since he blew it vs Philly.
Favre won’t win since he blew it vs Denver.
Brees won’t win since they won’t even make the playoffs.
Portis won’t win since he has been injured and Washington will likely miss the playoffs.
Kerry Collins won’t win because he’s Kerry Collins.
Matt Ryan/Turner have a chance if Atlanta ends up in the playoffs.
DeAngelo Williams may have a case if Carolina finishes well.
No Giants player is good enough individually to merit the award.
No Titans player is good enough individually, unless you want to give it to a rookie (Chris Johnson).
If Minnesota manages to make the playoffs, Adrian Peterson will probably win.

It's hard to drastically improve on 13-3
Not to mention that Brett Favre won three straight MVP’s in the 90’s, and I guarantee he didn’t drastically improve his team all three years.

Faulk's 2000 MVP Award
First of all, Marshall Faulk winning the 2000 MVP for a 10-6 Rams team that basically backed into the playoffs on the heels of a 14-2 Super Bowl season shoots your theory all to hell about a player needing to have played for a team that improved drastically to even be in contention for MVP.
Matt Ryan is feel good lovey dovey poppy cock. You’re the only person I’ve seen to suggest he’s even in consideration. His numbers are not just solid for a rookie; he’s definitely the real deal. On the other hand, I don’t recall that Ben Roethlisberger got any serious MVP love his rookie season and that team went 15-1 while the Falcons will at best finish likely finish 11-5.
As for the other Falcon candidate, I like Michael Turner a lot but the running backs who have won the MVP award recently were a lot more dominant and bigger part of their offenses than Turner has been this year. First, we have to mention the 2,000-yard backs; Barry Sanders and Terrell Davis. Turner isn’t going to sniff that milestone.
Then you have your dual threats. Thurman Thomas and Marshall Faulk both led the league in yards from scrimmage and were just as central to their teams’ passing games as they were running the ball. Turner has 4 receptions for 11 yards so far and no, that’s not a typo.
Of course, there’s the double deuce. Aside from leading his team out of a 0-2 hole and winning the rushing crown despite only playing 14 games, Emmitt also averaged 5.3 yards per carry. Turner’s only averaging 4.3 per carry and if you take away his huge opening day performance against that glorified CFL team the Lions he’s actually averaging less than 4 yards per carry and in fact has been held under 4 yards per carry in seven (more than half) of the Falcons’ games this season. Turner hasn’t had anything resembling an MVP season from a performance standpoint; especially when compared to the seasons of the backs who have won the award over the last 20 or so years.
In the last 4 years, Shaun Alexander and LT both approached 1,900 yards and broke the single season touchdown mark in consecutive seasons.
Adrian Peterson’s a solid candidate but it really depends on how close he gets to 2,000 yards. Besides, as good as he is it’s not like he’s the only talent on the Vikings. Also, MVP’s end up being the best player on the best team far more often than guys who ended up doing massive jobs of carrying a team on their back (Sanders, Faulk) just to even get them into the playoffs. Alexander and LT both had spectacular seasons for teams that finished with the best records in their conference.
Finally, if McNair could win a split-MVP with Peyton Manning in ’03, Romo definitely has a shot.
by MadMick on Dec 1, 2008 12:23 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Clarification
“His numbers are not just solid for a rookie; he’s definitely the real deal.”
That could be read as me saying his numbers aren’t that solid; even for a rookie. What I actually meant was even without taking into account Ryan is a rookie, he has been solid enough to show that he is the real deal.
by MadMick on Dec 1, 2008 12:26 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Almost forgot.....
McNair’s Titans in ‘03 didn’t win their division even though the previous year they won the division and made it to the AFC Title Game. So how does that qualify as drastic improvement from one season to the next?
by MadMick on Dec 1, 2008 12:39 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
your logic is flawed
Romo has improved the Cowboys dramatically. They’ll finish with a worse record because he didn’t play in 3 games which resulted in 2 losses.
If Cowboys make the playoffs, Romo is certainly more than worthy to win league MVP.

by Terry on Dec 1, 2008 12:47 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That logic seems flawed
The team lost two games with Romo injured, hypothetically they could have won those and finished 13-3 or 12-4. Besides, there was an awfully high ceiling for Romo and the Cowboys. If Tom Brady had stayed healthy but led the Patriots a “mere” 13-3 or 12-4 record, while throwing for 35+ TDs and such, would he still not merit MVP consideration?

2. Drew Brees’ three-interception performance in the Saints’ loss to the Bucs should end his MVP candidacy. Can’t we just all agree not to give the award to a quarterback this year? So what if Brees and Kurt Warner could break the single-season passing record? Four more guys will probably break it next year.

Burger King in his article today
Had Dallas listed at #4 in his fine 15, saying they were better than Atlanta, TB, Carolina, and Washington. Then he proceeds to list his MVP candidates.:
1. Peyton Manning
2. Drew Brees
3. Matt Ryan
4. Kris Jenkins
5. James Harrison
So a few weeks back Dallas I believe wasn’t even listed on his fine 15, after we got hammered by the Giants. So Dallas goes from not listed, to #4 on his list. What is the reason that Dallas has made such a drastic improvement on the all-knowing one’s list? TONY FREAKIN ROMO.
So the fact that he realizes we are that good, after saying we were that bad…and we all know why we have been playing better is because we got our QB back, which has energized the entire team.
And he lists 2 defensive players that he doesn’t even pick for DPOY (since he said Demarcus is now the front-runner).
THIS is why Romo will not win MVP. Because idiots like this are the ones voting.
by mhuff13 on Dec 2, 2008 1:31 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
My point exactly.
Peyton freakin’ Manning? The Colts aren’t even in the running to win their own division and by my count, the eggheaded one has had 5 or 6 games where his performance ranged from poor to mediocre. That’s MVP-worthy? Does this fruit even watch the games?
by MadMick on Dec 2, 2008 2:24 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Actually
I think Manning should be the MVP right now. Have YOU been watching their games? He has won 4 or 5 games on last minute drives, bailing out their pathetic defense and NO running game at all. The Vikings game, Texans game, Patriots game, Steelers, and Chargers are all games where they won in the last 3 minutes of the game. He’s been nothing short of amazing in the clutch.
We aren’t in the running for our division, or at least we are just as much as the Colts. Does that disqualify Romo? I don’t think so.

Numbers are not everything
Manning has been amazing this year considering the absolute lack of running game and defense for that team.
by mhuff13 on Dec 2, 2008 10:46 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If that was the most important criteria for MVP....
John Elway would’ve won about 5 of them. Besides, even with a declining Marvin Harrison and struggling running game, Egghead still has some pretty fabulous toys at his disposal.
Just because Manning had a comeback in those 5 games doesn’t mean he played excellent in every one of them or necessarily carried the team on his back. In two of those comeback wins, the defense managed to hold the opposition to a mere 15 points. The defense also held Ben Roethlisberger to 0 TD, 3 INT. I’m not saying that defense is anything other than average or even mediocre but I’d say they’re worlds better than the worst of the Colts defenses Peyton has ever been saddled with. The Colts offense actually ranks lower in all major categories than their defense does. As for the Texans game, it’s just as accurate to say that Sage Rosenfels fumbled that game away as it is to say Manning lead a comeback.
If Romo’s great play continues down the stretch, there’s no way you can give Peyton the MVP over him especially when comparing the two teams’ remaining schedules and where they’re positioned in the playoff race; the Colts have a bunch of daisies left and the only real team they have remaining is the Titans; who would’ve already wrapped everything up by Week 17.
Some people take the Most Valuable a little too literally. Most of the time the MVP is awarded to the best player on one of the top two or three teams in the league and not the guy who suceeds the most despite being in a less-than-favorable situation.

Peyton was 1-2 in the 1st 4 weeks, so not sure what you are talking about there.. Peyton had 3 tds and 4 Int’s over that strech..
I watched the games, he got shut down for vs. Chicago. Struggled for most of the game vs. Minnestoa.. He pulled out, but he didn’t look good, he threw more picks then TD’s that game.
Like I said he started slow, but is playing well now, except for the Cleveland game..

Here we go again with the "QB being 1-2"
No the team was 1-2.
Addai had 44 yards in the first game. Manning went for 257 and 1TD.
20 yards rushing in game 2.
78 in game 3
And the defense gave up 188,179, and 236 yards rushing in those 3 games.
Kinda hard to do much in the passing game, when you have no rushing game and you rarely get the ball because the other team is running it down your throat.
Shut down vs Chicago? Or was the running game shut down, because he had 257 yards, 1 TD and no INT in that game. And he pretty much won the Minnesota game by himself there at the end.
