Adam 'Pacman' Jones injury could cost him the season
Adam Jones will miss Sunday's game with the Giants due to a neck injury that could keep him out the rest of the season, sources said.
Jones is awaiting results of medical tests to determine the extent of the injury.
The cornerback suffered a neck injury against Pittsburgh and while he was able to return further tests revealed more damage.
Wow, not good. With the safety situation in injury turmoil we needed the flexibility of Anthony Henry moving to safety. Now, he won't be available to do that unless Mike Jenkins can come back healthy for the Giants game. We also need Jones down the stretch, his pass defense has been very good, probably the best and most consistent on the team when he actually plays,
Just another hit of bad news on the injury front for the Cowboys.
Hat tip to Masada for this FanPost.
[UPDATE] More from the DMN blog:
RB Marion Barber dressed out for practice for the first time since dislocating the pinkie toe on his right foot, but he didn't participate in drills open to the media.
Here's the list of players who aren't out there: TE Jason Witten (ankle, chest), CB Pacman Jones (neck), WR Roy Williams (foot), FS Ken Hamlin (ankle) and LG Montrae Holland (ankle).

Really? When does this end?
It seems like anytime we start to have a little bit of good fortune, we get completely dumped on again. Hopefully the “Rule of Averages” on injuries has fully caught up to us this year, and we can have a nice normal average-amount-of-injuries season next year.

But having Pac makes it much easier to move Henry to safety. If we make that move now, it leaves us with 4 healthy corners (one of which is Alan Ball)

Barber practicing early in the week is a good sign that he should be a go this week.
The reason I feel that this is important is because it may be on the running game to keep the def off the field if the secondary has too many players out this week due to injury. A strong running game can close out a game and keep the def from having to win the game for them. It will also help with TOP and tire out the gints def.

But why put on the pads at all if he was not going to do any drills, the team
the portion that gets reported is not the entire practice. I doubt the team would have him in pads to try and fool anyone, WP would just say that they would hope is going to play. Either way we may find out in today’s PC.

goddamn
man im not even surprised
its like every week im expecting someone to have some injury or some player to go to IR
its like im used to it now
i like jenkins, he seems to avoid contact at times but hes a solid corner
but pacman is better..he’s been very solid in the games he’s played in
and i was excited about this defense shutting down eli and co. sunday night
now we could have a serious problem
i hope anthony henry still will play at safety at times and jenkins is able to play
also garret should use barber and choice like the giants do with jacobs and ward
that would definately open up things in the passing game and gain alot of yards
tony romo will never have a game like he did last week again..for atleast this season
i’m betting my ass on that…we’re at home playing on a good field, good weather, and we’re pissed

If Witten doesn’t dress and Roy WR Williams doesn’t dress this Sunday, the season’s over. If Proctor starts… it’s iffy.
I’m 85% along the way to accepting there will be no playoffs this season. Most disappointing season ever in my mind.

Why wouldn't Williams dress?
He had the same injury last week and he played.
And what do injuries have to do with grit? You want Pacman to “grit out” a bulging disc? A lot of guys on this team have played hurt so far this year, I would think that would qualify for “shared grit.”

not that
Grit and broken body parts are unrelated.
Grit is not getting jail raped by the St Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals, and not losing games in the 4th quarter and not jumping offsides 3x in a single game. That’s grit. This team doesn’t have it.

I am not saying that this team is headed for greatness, but I have never understood the
overuse of hyperbole to describe why a team is not successful. Grit, heart, guts, are things that are thrown around and do not have any real measure. I am not saying that stats answer all questions. I was asking an honest question in regards to your intangible of grit, if they win the remaining 3 games, will they then have this grit? I would assume that the answer would be yes, but based on your earlier comment, the team will not win this sunday because you already know that they have no grit.

I suppose you think "gritty" David Eckstein is a great baseball player too
We lost to the Cardinals in overtime. I wouldn’t consider that being “jail raped.”
I don’t think “grit” is our problem. I think our problems are more things like “Terence Newman sat down on the Holmes route at 13 yards instead of running it out,” or “Tony had trouble throwing in cold weather with a recently injured hand.” Or “losing over 80 player games to injury over the course of 14 weeks.” I think those are more of our problems than “grit.”
Because those things, unlike “grit,” are actual factual occurrences which take place on the football field and affect the outcome of games. Whereas “grit” is an abstract concept which has no tangible meaning relative to the game played on the field, and which people use to complain about teams when they are frustrated.

sure it is
You’ve played sports. If you’re not dialed in to what your assignments are because you’re tired or hurt or don’t feel like it… then your head’s not in the right place. And if you can’t get it in the right place in order to win, then you don’t have the fortitude to do so, and you’re a loser… cuz the guy opposite you is likely to do what it takes even though his lungs are burning like yours.
Dropped passes, penalties (especially offsides), incorrectly run routes, lane discipline on kicks, getting pushed onto your butt (Proctor), using incorrect technique, etc… these are all mistakes, and are especially unforgiveable in critical situations. These are actual occurances. They aren’t made up by disgruntled fans.
These happen because you’re not focused. I don’t believe in Rah Rah, but I do believe in guys that can help others to focus.
I just don’t see any guys on the Cowboys who are really, really serious about doing everything it takes to win. The Cowboys are far and away the most talented team in the NFL, I believe. But they get beaten physically, and they beat themselves by mistakes.
They gots not grit. Period.
They better find it to make the playoffs.

Here's the IR list
Copied from above, with “Games Missed” added. I did this quickly from memory— I would love it if someone with some free time checked my facts and added all the non-IR injuries.
Sam Hurd (Injured early in season and put on IR after Week 6; 12 total games lost)
Mat McBriar (Put on IR after Week 6; 10 games lost)
Roy Williams (SS) (Broke arm twice during season and put on IR after Week 6; 13 total games lost)
Pat Watkins (Suffered neck stinger early in year and put on IR after Week 13; 5-6 total games lost)
Kyle Kosier (Injured foot twice early in year; eventually put on IR after Week 12; 12 total games lost)
Felix Jones (Injured toe and put on IR following Week 6; 10 total games lost)
Adam Jones (Suspended for 4 games and potentially put on IR for bulging disc in Week 14; 7 total games lost)
That is only the IR list, and it is 70 total games lost. And those guys are all starters or significant role players, with the debatable exception of Hurd.
Incredibly tough year.

How is the season done?
Because Pac is injured?
I really hate these types of statements. There is no telling what the future holds, but the season is most definitely not over. In spite of the injuries, penalties, turnovers, horrible ST play, the Cowboys are still sitting at 8-5 with the 6th seed today. All they need to to is win the next 3 games, 2 of which are at home, and they will be in the post season. That is not close to being done for the season. IMO

Michael Irvin had a defect in the structure of his spinal column. Identification of that is what ended his career. He had been one hit away from paralysis his entire career, and once he discovered this, he hung ‘em up.
But, the injury that spurred the analysis of his neck was along the lines of a bulging disc. I have one in my lower back, it sucks ass when it’s unruly, but it can be managed. He’s y oung enough where therapy may keep him in order. Larry Bird, Joe Montana, Charles Barkely each hung it up due to disc injuries.

No one's going to remember the injuries
In the end, ESPN and the rest of the irritating media aren’t going to remember that the Cowboys had a horrifically injury-filled year, just like they don’t remember that TO was hurt last year when citing our end-of-the-regular season swoon. If we fail to make the postseason, then they will just focus on our continued lack of success in Dec/Jan and our inability to display “heart” or “grit” or whatever other made-up terms they like to use to explain on-field problems (personally, I prefer terms like “lost containment,” “ran the wrong coverage,” “didn’t maintain gap discipline,” and other things that are actually factual and have relevance to the outcome of the game, but that’s just me).
So while we’re all keenly aware of the injury issues on this message board, nobody outside of Cowboys Nation is, and we’re not going to get any sympathy. So with that in mind, I think the only way to get them to shut up will be, to quote Major League: “To win the whole damned thing,” injured or not. I understand that that is going to be a very difficult climb at this point, but I think it’s the only way we can expect a let up in the constant criticism that the media is throwing the Cowboys’ way.

Lets see....
We still have a pro bowl QB
A pro bowl WR
4 starting OL, including 3 pro bowlers
Last year’s starting WR
A very solid rookie TE
A pro bowl kicker
Our entire defensive front seven, including ALL backups
One pro bowl CB
A multi-year starter at the other CB
A very solid rookie CB.
And we probably will have:
A (banged up) pro bowl TE.
A sore-footed WR who’s been a pro bowler.
So what are we missing? Well, some safeties. Could be a lot worse. It might be OTs.
Anyone remember the Seattle playoff game? They won that game with a guy they signed that week at CB. Anyone remember the Giants’ secondary problems last year? They managed to win a lot of games with a whole bunch of backups. More than we’ll be playing with on Sunday.
Injuries are part of this game. Some teams find ways to overcome them and be successful. One might think with all the spots we don’t have problems that we might be able to sneak some out.
Vegas seems to think we can. We’re still 3 point favorites.

I agree with you Ridgelake, we’ve still got a ton of talent that’s able to take the field on Sunday night. I think what worries some of us is that in football, just one weak spot out of 11 can doom you (remember the 2006 season and our problems at FS?), and our chances of having a weak spot are much higher now with all the injuries.
But yes, I agree that we’ve certainly still got enough to be competitive, ESPECIALLY on offense, where our only significant hole is at LG and we should really still be able to generate plenty of points.

the reasons Seattle won and the Giants won with injured players out was because the coaching staff coached those guys up, the ones that played anyways. That our lackadasical practices (giving guys time off, not being physical) even dating back to training camp is haunting us now? When we did have tuff practices (i.e. before the Bucs game) these guys were physical as we have seen all year and more so than last year! translate to what happens on Sundays? Or am I the only one who believes that?

I have never been a fan of beating your own guys up in practice

So you are not a fan of basic fundamentals as say tackling?
by rocj55 on Dec 10, 2008 5:53 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
They've been playing football their whole lives
In season practices should not be for hitting against your own men. You can teach fundamentals if you want to without full speed hitting.

Just so that you're aware
Dallas isn’t on our schedule. We don’t play the Cowboys.
I commented. You're welcome.

I agree Mullin how does beating up your own guys help? Injuries have a large % of luck involved..

Well something is not working.
These guys are getting hurt more and more the further the season goes. So obviously not beating each other up isn’t working.

Cowboys came out with a lot of energy Sunday
they played hard and tough and that can be attributed to the extra rest

I don't I have leaped out of my chair
they way I did on the goal line stance on Sunday. It had been awhile since I’ve seen the Boys with a great stance like that. I just want to see our D with that same aggression and attitude every Sunday.

I leaped off my couch too.
I really thought that was going to be the beginning of Super Bowl run.

Me too
Still could be the start of something. Don’t understand the overcelebration crap. Every team celebrates like that after a goal line stand.

Hey guys
Our Defense played better…with more fire and passion than I’ve seen since the mid 90’s!!!
They played hardnosed tough …gritty defense!
I think our Defense has just turned the corner !
If we play D like that the next 3 weeks……We’ll definitely win out!!!!

ok sorry this has been bugging me
the play that pac got injured on was totally unnecessary that guy literally ripped him from the pile and threw him down, the NFL is going to do nothing about that? and if it’s already been posted sorry.
by joey7289 on Dec 10, 2008 5:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
the worst part of that is that the ref was standing right there and never even thought about throwing a flag
by TARHEEL PAUL on Dec 10, 2008 6:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yes
i remember that, it’s so sad to be honest, they showed the replay on ESPN, and didn’t even make mention…in the end their bogus analysts will just say it’s what happens when there is a fumble, but i can’t ever remember a player getting ripped from a pile and thrown to the ground, pretty much defenseless.

Do You Think Pittsburgh Put Out A Hit?
You could clearly hear in the game, the Steeler players telling Pac “We’re going to hurt your a$$”.
Sounds like it to me, of course the NFL will do nothing about it. The Ravens did have a iot out for Mendenhall, if I’m correct.

I don't think
The guy pulling Pac out of the pile thought he would injury pac by ripping him from the pile..

The shot
on Pacman was a cheap shot. Pac is lucky he did not dislocate his shoulder.
The NFL should at a minimum fine the SBag who injured PAC.
They won’t because it is PAC.
Whether you like him or not that was a cheap move and Goodell shouldod something.

He muffed the punt
That hit he took is the exact same hit every team in the league would lay on every return man who muffs a punt. And guys get pulled out of piles all the time. This IS football guys, not badmiton. Next time Pac, catch the damn ball.
by WB3forMB3 on Dec 10, 2008 7:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Next Time
He should do what ever punt returner is taught from middle school on. Stand on the ten yard line, and if the ball goes over your head, call for a fair catch and run forward (away from the ball).
But no, Pacman Jones has show everybody he’s the second coming of Deion, and has to try to make a play out of nothing. Every single time.
He coverage was good Sunday, but his punt returning decision making is atrocious.
If there is a next time for him.
by kindablue on Dec 10, 2008 7:43 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
it's not the muff
it’s what happened after that, pulled from a pile and thrown to the ground…that isn’t football, if you tap the QB in the head you get a 15 yard penalty, but if your punt returner muffs a punt it’s ok for him to get ripped from the pile and thrown to the ground?
by joey7289 on Dec 10, 2008 7:44 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I am not
talking about the hit.
I am talking about someone grabbing you when you are defenseless and that is exactly what PACMAN was defenseless. No less keep pulling and tugging at his arm.
Whether you or the league likes or dislikes the guy he is deserved the same protection as everyone else.
You don;t think a flag is thrown if you do that to devin hester or cribbs?
PACMAN is at least creative and trying to make soemthing happen.
Maybe if ur special teams didn;t suck he may do better.

actually it was Hines Ward
In Romo we Trust
by Terry on Dec 10, 2008 6:50 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It was both
Ward for obvious reasons, Mendenhall because he sent a text message to Ray Rice that said something about the Ravens D, I don’t remember the whole story.

You are exactly right
I heard the same comment from the Pitt bench during the game.
Goodell is a joke. He probably thinks PACMAN deserves everything he gets.
Let’s see him explain why NFL players are told to call their team instead of the police when they get in toruble.

Injuries happen...........
Good god. By reading some of these post you would think the season is already over.
Ridgelake is dead on. This is football guys. We are not the only team that has a ton of injuries. Just go look at the Seahawks injury report if you dont believe me. The biggest difference between us and them is that we still have enough talent to go 8-5. Ridgelake brought up a good point with last years giants secondary. But it wasnt just there secondary. If i remember correctly, they not only lost both cornerbacks to injury but they also lost Jacobs for several games, shockey broke his leg and was done for the season. What about the entire Patriots defense in 2006 when they eventually lost to the Colts in the AFC championship game? My point is, yes we are banged up, and yes i have only seen it this bad as a cowboys fan one other time (2002 season when the entire offensive line was out) but, as ridgelake pointed out, we still have a boat load of talent. And i believe we have enough talent to run the table. Will they do it? I dont know but i do know we still have enough players to get it done.

we need this coaching staff to light a fire under these guys!
