Witten and TO nearly come to blows!!!!

The Star-Telegram is reporting that wide receiver Terrell Owens and tight end Jason Witten had “a near altercation” in the locker room on Friday. Citing two unnamed sources, the paper reports that Owens and Witten exchanged words before being separated.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/12/13/report-to-witten-had-near-altercation/

I hate to say it guys, but TO may have to go after the season. We can't have these types of distractions if we are to succeed in the future. I'm not expecting a whole lot tomorrow against the Giants because I think the distractions this week are too great too overcome. It will only fester if we lose tomorrow night and the locker room will only get more divided. If it has to come down to TO or Witten, say bye-bye to TO after the season. I don't know if the two can co-exist next year and we can't afford these distractions going into the 2009 season.

I disgaree

The team will unite and pull together for a big win tomorrow because they’re all very pissed at the media and I fully expect them to have an “us against the world” mentality from here on out.

In Romo we Trust

Yup...

I’m sure that T.O. will be different this time around. Wait…no he won’t, he’s going to be a cancer on the cowboys the same way he was with the 49ers and the eagles. Unfortunately, his attitude effects all of those around him and if the cowboys are down at all in the game tomorrow, he’s going to exacerbate the problem on the sidelines.

You have an excellent wide receiver core without him and his complaints about not getting enough touches. I would say bench him for his attitude, and pay him to sit. But you can’t do that, because your owner feels that you should placate T.O. in every way, shape, and form. That causes bad blood all around – from the coaching staff to the players on the field.

The media will have an impact on the game, regardless of how professional the rest of the team is. And unfortunately I think it’s going to cost you tomorrow, which is a shame since I think Romo has come back into his early season form.

If he was a cancer in S.F. and Philly, he was the most life-giving cancer imaginable

The 49ers were a playoff team when he was there.

They were 7-9 his last season for the team, when Dennis Erickson replaced Steve Mariucci. The 49ers fell to 2-14 the year after he left, and have not had a winning season since.

The Eagles had lost three straight NFC Championship Games before he arrived. They made their one Super Bowl the one full season he was there.

They canned him after six games in ’05. They were 4-2 at the time.

They went 2-8 the rest of the way.

They went 10-6 the next season, but have not been true championship caliber since they dumped him.

You do notice that the Dallas offense went south after he was hurt in Carolina last year?

He’s a pain in the ass, but he’s a talented pain in the ass. A make-a-difference pain in the ass.

Cancer with a capital C in Philly

Come on, Raf, how can you say Owens was any sort of positive factor in Philadelphia? Ok, he helped McNabb have his best year statistically. But as you mention the Eagles had made the NFC Championship the prior three seasons, they were obviously darn good without him. But then you imply that the acquisition of Owens finally gace the Eagles the edge to make it to the Super Bowl. Except Philadelphia won their two playoff games with Owens on the sideline. And if you don’t think the circus that Owens and Rosenhaus pulled in the 2005 season (along with the myriad of injuries that the Eagles suffered) didn’t contribute to their dismal season, then you must have been sleeping most of the year.

Yes, Dallas blew offensively after Owens went down. Might have had a little something to do with the fact that their starting receivers were then Crayton and Hurd.

Yes, Owens is a game-impacting talent. But he is not very clutch and yes, he brings down teams.

They were 7-9 his last season for the team

And he left that team in shambles as you mentioned because of infighting between players, including the problems with Garcia.

The Eagles had lost three straight NFC Championship Games before he arrived. They made their one Super Bowl the one full season he was there.

As was previously mentioned, we got to the NFC game before him, and we’ve been to, and won, playoff games without him…

They went 2-8 the rest of the way.

Because of all the nonsense he caused between players and the coaching staff.

They went 10-6 the next season, but have not been true championship caliber since they dumped him.

Maybe not true “championship” caliber, but definitely playoff caliber which we’ve already shown, and as the Giants proved last season, you don’t have to have a championship caliber team to win a championship.

What I was saying was that he’s a pain in the ass that is not worth it. If you have a good quarterback – and as much as I want to vomit by saying this, Romo is a great quarterback – you don’t need Owens around shitting where he sleeps. I think that with the addition of Williams, and in general your WR core, you don’t need a guy who can bail out a mediocre QB. In all those years where Eagles dominated the division and went to that NFC title game, other than owens, can you name our other big receivers who are #1’s in the NFL??? Come on, we won with guys like Pinkston, Mitchell, and Thrash…think about it, pinkston was our go-to guy. McNabb was able to take mediocre players with him to the playoffs. Romo is more than capable of turning average receivers into exceptional receivers, the same as brady did when he won the superbowl a bajillion times.

You don’t need Owens…you need witten…Owens is going to destroy your offense with his bitching and his antics, and you better believe that come sunday it’s going to show.

How else can I explain it….he’s heroin ok? He’s crack…sure, his TD’s make you feel good, make you wanna fly and ride the snake. When you’re winnin’ and smoken that T.O. rock, he makes you wanna jump up and slap your momma. But when you have even a little adversity, you end up cold, without the playoffs, without a winning record, giving handjobs behind a 7-11…

Unless you have the 2000 Ravens defense

you need a big time receiver to win anything.

Name the tight end led offenses that won anything. I’m not slamming Jason Witten. I’m very happy to have him on the team, but my point is you don’t kick Owens to the curb unless you have somebody as good to replace him. I haven’t seen Roy Williams show that level of game yet.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 13, 2008 8:28 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the patriots may differ with you on that

since their championship didn’t have any big name receivers…

by Deke on Dec 13, 2008 8:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well I'm not with Raf on this one, team chemistry aside

I thank we would be better off getting rid of T.O. Roy has the potential to take his place, and he has shown it in the past, and Witten is a great all around player. Whereas T.O. is old and his skills are regressing.

However, bringing team chemistry back into it, Witten is dividing up the locker room, and is probably preventing Romo from having the kind of relationship he needs to have with his teammates out of loyalty to Witten. No matter how talented Witten is, he can’t make up for what he is doing to this team. And teams win championships, not individuals. It would be best for everyone if Witten was traded.

by quincyyyyy on Dec 13, 2008 8:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

T.O. has not regressed physically at all.

T.O.’s shortcoming is his refusal to become a better and more deceptive route runner. And of course only average hands.

I’m in no hurry to run him off because I have not really been impressed with Roy Williams. He’s no T.O. And I dont want to hear the word “potential” when we are talkin about a 27 year old in his fifth year. You are what you’re gonna be at 27. He’s not gonna magically take it to the next level.

Now if Roy was our #1 and more things were designed for him, sure his numbers will improve. But he has never been more than pretty good. Not spectacular. Just near the top of the second tier.

Temper your expectations with Roy, because a lot of people are counting on him to be something that he has never been.

Actually that is not true

he was a couple of years ago when he had something like 1300 yards with Kitna throwing him the ball. Not Brady, or even Marc Bulger, freaking Kitna. The guy hasn’t been in a good situation for most of his career. I think he can be a top 10 receiver.

I know that they didn’t win the superbowl last year, but it was Wes Welker down the stretch of the last 3-4 games that really made the patriots unstoppable. You could double moss and then you’d have welker lined up with a linebacker unless you dropped into a quarter defense. His ability to run after the catch is ridiculous for a TE.

by thwalls on Dec 14, 2008 5:30 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not just Welker...

The Pats also had Kevin Faulk come up big in those games. He was and really still is a top notch 3rd down back.

And quite honestly the Patriots flat design and call much better plays than the Cowboys do.

I guess Ed Werder is owed an apology

The only Hack on this team is T.O, and the apologist T.O fans that continue to ignore this idiots cancerous ways. GET T.O OFF OF THIS TEAM AFTER THE SEASON….and take Pac-rat with him.

You cant trade him, nobody wants him…

This team is clearly fracturing and has issues in the locker room, with no strong headcoach and an enabler as an owner, things are only going to get worse….

by Deke on Dec 13, 2008 12:14 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Ed Werder is owed an apology?

No, Jason Witten owes his team an apology.

So T.O. complains he’s not getting passes thrown his way. Does anybody expect that he doesn’t do this and hasn’t done this everywhere he’s been every single week? Michael Irvin jawed for the all all the time. Roy Williams whined about this last year in Detroit.

Who’s most responsible for threatening team unity and causing a distraction? T.O. for bitching in house, or Jason Witten and/or his agent for running to the press, turning it into a non-stop media circus?

Who’s more responsible for tearing that locker room apart?

Cause I know that Dallas at this point last week had won three in a row and everybody was bullish. And they lose a game in Pittsburgh in the last seven minutes and suddenly the press is all over this team, and there can’t be enough stories about ill will and near fist fights, etc., etc.

Sorry. I don’t care how good Jason Witten is. He did a VERY stupid thing. He’s an untouchable on that team, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t lost a ton of his teammates respect this week. He sold them out. He had to know what the effect of his comments would be.

And anybody who matches a bit public display about wanting “accountability” isn’t being accountable to the bottom line when he throws gasoline on the fire.

It could galvanize the team

the thing is, Witten isn’t going to dog it.
T.O. isn’t going to dog it.
Romo isn’t going to dog it.

They all want to win. They all prep hard. That’s not a guarantee they’ll play well, but these
are three of the best preparers on the team.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 13, 2008 1:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

they don't have to like each other. Not necessary to win.

Not everyone liked Haley in the 90’s.
Deion wasn’t having his own campfires with Aikman and MJohnston.

It’s all about doing your job.
You win – then these things are chalked up as sibling spats.
You lose – the team is “ripped apart” by snide comments and “division”.

Also, this crap needs to be under wraps. This stuff went on back in the 90’s too. But ESPN and internet rags weren’t pestering players and staff for a nugget of whatever-they-can-get-away-with.

This coaching staff is too soft like many of you are saying.

Mixed feelings about TO

On the plus side:
 - he is a productive player with double digit TD’s last 2 years and likely again this year. How are you going to replace that ?

- forces other teams to gameplan, shift coverage

On the minus side:
- it’s clear he places individual achievement over team
All the ‘behavior’ stems from that. Problem is – his gripes don’t stand up to scrutiny. He IS the focal point of the O, almost to its detriment – we force his touches to keep him happy. The problem when dealing with an emotional argument, no amount of logic can overcome it, because it’s not based on rational thinking.

Unfortunately, this has a whole Mars/Venus vibe to it and nothing gets served going down that particular alley.

Back in the day, team mates on successful teams fought all the time, but as has been noted here 24/7 media coverage blows everything out of proportion. I do object to this condescending/moralizing tone from the media. ‘Team chemistry’ is BS – too many examples of championship teams with plenty of infighting.

There’s been plenty of commentary noting the parallels of this years’ Boys and last years’ Giants. We’ll see on SUN.

the '70s Yankees

Shoot, look at the ’71 Cowboys. Total chaos on the locker room. Factions and cliques everywhere.

Try the ‘95 Cowboys. Nate Newton famously said after the Eagles loss, "there’s too much love in the locker room for us to turn on each other." But there were factions. The coach was not loved. He had far less control than this one does. And they won.

It comes down to how you play on Sunday. How you block, tackle, catch, run and execute. Simple as that.

Witten has been nothing but a model teammate and citizen.

There is no way Jerry would dump Witten before TO, nor should they. If it really came down to it, Witten has many years ahead, TO has only a couple left (maybe).

This is why Jerry traded all those picks for Roy W. Not just to be this season’s #2 WR. He’s going to be the man, post-TO.

I don’t recall Witten ever talking bad about about a teammate behind his back to the media, or yelling at coaches and teammates on the sideline of a game.

I wouldn't mind losing Crayton in the offseason...

though I think we just signed him either last offseason, or the one before. My reasoning (forgetting all the BS going on now) would be the lack of need for him with the emergence of Miles Austin, the return of Sam Hurd, and with TO and RW firmly entrenched as #1 and #2.

But PC is in the Wes Welker mold

And works the slot better than anyone else on our roster

Hurd is a FA after the season, and will not be resigned....

TO
Williams
Austin
Stanback

that should be our top 4 WR’s next season….Crayton may have some trade value…..4th rounder

First of all...

I dont think Witten was the unnamed source, but if he was then it is indeed he who is the cancer in this locker room. All TO has done is come in and score touchdowns. I want both still on the team but if it came to a choice between TO and Witten, I would prefer to keep one of the best receivers in the history of the game rather than any tight end. TO is more important to the team than Witten is.

Just like in Philly...

TO was able to get a bunch of players (many on D) to take his “side”. In every argument, there’s a kernel of truth. A paranoid personality like TO can be very convincing, especially to a weak-minded or disgruntled player. Most pro athletes have huge egos and fragile psyches. It doesn’t take much to tip the scale.

Look, I’ve been messin’ with you for a few days, but this I mean with all sincerity: The dude is not A cancer, he is THE cancer. He will destroy your team. That is his legacy to the game.

Philly fan.......go figure....

he MADE your team……McFlabb was called out…rightfully so, as he ALONE lost your SB chance…McChoke, McPuke, McOutta Philly after this seasson…….then what ??…a 30+ RB, STILL NO #1 WR, and it’s back to the basement for you clowns…

Beats me how they say TO’s not a team player. This guy played with a broken leg in the Super Bowl. You should have seem him limping. This guy did all he could to get ready for the playoff game last year while Romo and Whitten goofed off in Mexico. I remember he was the only player who felt remorse over the loss last season. TO’s a true Nubian warrior.

Didn't TO pay for Romo's trip with Jessica to Mexico?

I agree that he is great player
