Will They Rise Above It?

"It's not gonna affect my performance.  Don't worry about it, alright?  Just hate it, it's really...It does disturb me.  But I'll rise above it.  I'm a professional, right?"

-- Nigel Tufnel, This is Spinal Tap

Nigel and his mates didn't get the "large bread."  Tony Romo and his teammates didn't get theirs in Pittsburgh either.

They've spent the whole week being told they're in the "where are they now file."   Jason and Terrell had a tiff and there wasn't even a groupie involved.

It's time to see who's a real professional.  To see if they can rise above it.

Time to crank it up to eleven, boys.

I was toying with that line,

but couldn’t figure out who to have self combust. If this season has any consistency, Cory Proctor will blow up in the third quarter. Dallas can’t keep a left guard this year.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 13, 2008 9:47 PM CST reply actions

Let's not jinx the guy, he's bad enough already

Let’s hope Proctor has his best game of the year tomorrow.

by torchindefenses on Dec 13, 2008 9:51 PM CST reply actions

He had his best game so far last week

was not bad in Pittsburgh. Hope he can play like that again.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 13, 2008 9:55 PM CST reply actions

I think he can do it

Proctor needs to step it up. If he has a good game and Barber is back and can really be a force we’ll win this game.

by torchindefenses on Dec 13, 2008 10:16 PM CST reply actions

What's wrong with Choice?

He ran a game closing drive on Thanksgiving just like Barber did in Washington.

He had several big runs. I love Marion but everybody said the running game would die in Pittsburgh without him and it didn’t.

It won’t tomorrow either.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 13, 2008 10:22 PM CST reply actions

I dont think it will die either

But you cant argue that Barber isnt an upgrade from Choice

by aussie_cowboy on Dec 13, 2008 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

when he's healthy, yes

but he’s not healthy. He has torn ligaments in that toe. He couldn’t cut earlier this week.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 13, 2008 11:22 PM CST up reply actions

Should be interesting to see the target split tomorrow

Will the peanut gallery (Roy Willie, Patty Bigmouth, and Miles Sinatra) contribute, or will it be the soap opera twins and a cloud of dust?

by Urinal Mint on Dec 13, 2008 11:05 PM CST reply actions

Let's Go...

The season starts Sunday. If Li’ Bum Phillips finds another way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory… Tex would fire him Monday. Wade, nor Romo, are leaders of men… but the window is open and there are enough “Wittens” around these parts to beat Minnesota and Carolina at home. All in, Tex.

by Montecito Tex on Dec 13, 2008 11:36 PM CST reply actions

Unfortunately, this weeks distractions will be the blame for the loss tomorrow night…and not the injuries

by thirdcoastnole on Dec 14, 2008 12:58 AM CST reply actions

man

why does this always happen?
why cant we go a single week without a detrimental story to our team? without new drama every week?

if we lose that will be the reason cuz we can beat them
especially with no jacobs and no burress…if we get on top early…we’ll ride the wave to victory

Owens refuses to speak to Witten

is the latest “news.” If true, that doesn’t reflect well on Owens. Giving someone the silent treatment is what women do. Or Dwight Shrute. Either way, kind of gay (and by gay I mean lame not Jeff Garcia gay, as Owens would say)

by DavidH22 on Dec 14, 2008 6:53 AM CST reply actions

Actually the drop off between Choice and Barber is not that great. Barber has more power but Choice appears to have more wiggle. And Choice I think has a little more speed.

by burmafrd1944 on Dec 14, 2008 6:59 AM CST reply actions

Agreed about Choice

especially since I have him on my fantasy team (handcuffed him to Barber a few weeks back). So the question is, when will we learn if Barber is playing or not? And then, how much will Choice play if Barber plays?

Workplace Tiff

I’m trying to draw a similar comparison by relating this to my workplace. I know in the past employees have had tiffs with each other over who’s getting promoted, who treated unfairly etc… and it’s worked in favor of the company. Productivity and quality of work increased. Here’s to hoping this is the case.

by Captain Comeback on Dec 14, 2008 9:20 AM CST reply actions

Comparing the Blog to the Tiff.....

Maybe we disagree on things like who should be fired, who should be resigned, who’s acting out because they want attention/the ball. Some of us say things that bother others like (we think the team will lose, or that we are a bunch of homers) but the bottom line is we all devote our time to this blog for one reason. We love The Star. We pray for them to win. I’m hoping, that winning will be as important to these guy than all else..again here’s to hoping.

by Captain Comeback on Dec 14, 2008 9:37 AM CST reply actions

Good Question?

I will be watching the Falcons Bucs game….I’m trying to figure that out. Who do I root for?

by Captain Comeback on Dec 14, 2008 9:49 AM CST up reply actions

we want bucs to win dont we...since we have the tiebreaker over them

And maybe owens not wanting to talk to witten he is actually trying to save face so nothing he says gets twisted, taken out of context, and leaked by the media by witten or someone over hearing the conversation. To me it seems like Owens is trying to do all the right things but people think its his same old antics. Im giving Owens the benefit of the doubt until some solid evidence says other wise.

What the French?! Toast!

by thebigham on Dec 14, 2008 9:57 AM CST reply actions

Depends on how you want this to playout

Bucs win and then Dallas would still be ahead of them even if they lose to the Giants. If Tampa loses, and Dallas wins they move into the 5th spot with tie breakers over both teams, but probably need to win out to make get either spot. The 5th seed will get the NFC north winner and the loser of the Giant / Carolina game.

The sixth seed will get Arizona and the winner of the Giant / Carolina game.

I'm a big baseball Cardinal fan

Rolen and LaRussa weren’t speaking to each other and they still won in 2006. And their regular season was a lot more pathetic than the Boys this year. The 70’s A’s and 70’s Yankees hated each other and still won championships.

The closest football comparison I can think of is the Giants from a couple years ago had internal squabbles, but they didn’t seem to gel until Tiki Barber and Shockey were out of the picture. Hopefully, our team doesn’t have to do that to realize it’s potential.

by illcowboy on Dec 14, 2008 10:11 AM CST reply actions

It is time for leadership (JJ, Phillips) to step up and say to these spoiled millionaires….PUT UP AND SHUT UP…..The fans are sick of the soap opera. Play like the money you’re paid. I’m nearly a 50 year Cowboy fan, but I am sick of this….or maybe the line is SHUT UP AND PUT UP.

by AZ Cowboy on Dec 14, 2008 10:39 AM CST reply actions

I think it's somewhere in between with Owens

He gets plenty of looks.

But I don’t think they’re the right kind of looks.

I still don’t think they move him across the formation and field enough to spring him loose. He is a monster when catching the ball at full speed. Why not drag him across the middle and let him make something happen on shallow crossing routes? Garrett seems firmly committed to having him live wide on the flank w/o motion, or throw him a bone with some silly gadget play (reference the sweep last week) that really isn’t suited to his skillset.

I think there’s a lot of blame to go around, but the QB is an easy target. The coaching deserves the most scrutiny, I think.

by Urinal Mint on Dec 14, 2008 11:06 AM CST reply actions

I have already said...

numerous times that Garrett runs Owens down the sidelines on the outside, and he just runs himself out of the play. If they would put him in motion, he would get a lot of free releases into the secondary which in turn would allow him to make plays with the ball in his hands 7-10 yards past the line of scrimmage.

It doesn’t make sense to me… just like it didn’t make sense that Garrett NEVER ran screens with a healthy Felix Jones. The kid is obviously good in space, and yet they run HB dives right between the guards with him… just doesn’t make sense…

hate to say it

i do not see this team winning tonight or next week or in philly…they are falling apart by its seams….i am only going to blame 2 for this mess…wade is first and jerry is 2nd for hiring mr softie…..hope big changes are made after the season ends and it better not be jason garrett….i hope dallas proves me wrong tonight but i just do not see it…I can picture t.o. not running his routes correctly etc….I pray i am wrong and look like a jazkazz when this game is over…enjoy ur sunday everyone.

by canty99 on Dec 14, 2008 11:19 AM CST reply actions

Hate to say it

How many coaches does Jerry have to hire and fire for people to understand that the problem is not the head coach? How many?

by rrb on Dec 14, 2008 11:24 AM CST reply actions

my point is....

a hc who had controll over his team would not let this get so out of hand…its a complete joke how wade has handled this situation…there is tooo many leaks in that organization thats obvious and it all comes back to mr softie…If your going to have a team with the type of players dallas has u cannot have a soft coach leading it…another problem is there really is no leader in the locker room…i wish tony would step up and take controll but thats not in his personality…very sad situation…but maybe just maybe this team can pull it together tonight…i can only hope at this point

Currently Listening to "The Payback" CD

by James Brown. I’m hoping this turns out to be karma today.

Paying back the Giants for their last two wins against us.

Paying back the hysterical propaganda machine of ESPN for trying to provoke Owens and the team in general.

Paying back all the legions of Cowboys haters out there for their small minds.

Go Pokes.

Nice!

I’m going to pump it up right before the game. That should be our theme.

T.O

I am a T.O fan, and I have tried to give him the benefit of the doubt but this guy blames everyone but himself. Romo throws him the ball enough but he either stops running his routes or drops the ball. I aint saying Romo should take some of the blame, but at some point this team has to look at itself in the mirror. Newman talking about the coaches, but he has given up plays this year and I dont ever hear Phillips call him out or anybody on the team. We knew Phillips was a players coach, but at the end of the day the players play. The cowboy players cant have it both ways, Parcells was too hard on them and now the coach is soft on them. These same players have been here and the same results every time.

by B-Real on Dec 14, 2008 11:43 AM CST reply actions

I thought Wade made a comment about there is no way we should have let Pittburgh off the hook with the long pass and that type of mistake should not of happened.

I took Newman’s comments as his retort, saying that the coaches don’t take the same accountability that they ask from the players. Seemed fair enough, and not a big deal if it was not comming from a Cowboy locker room in the ESPN era.

BTW: I think it is true that Parcells was too tough on his players and that Wade is too soft. Moderation and balance are generally a good thing.

by Trey, on Dec 14, 2008 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

Amen on T.O.

I’m a huge fan of his but he needs to keep working on his drops and be able to look in the mirror at his own flaws more and focus less on others.’ He’s high-strung and competitive, and those can be good things, but he had to rein it in a bit more for the good of the team as well as for himself. Less self-focus, T.O., please.

by PaulFVillarreal on Dec 14, 2008 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

I not happy about having to defend T.O.

but who went to the press with all of this?

It wasn’t him.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 14, 2008 12:54 PM CST up reply actions

Why arent you happy to defend TO?

Hes done nothing since hes got to Dallas except be our best offensive player. (excluding Romo possibly)

The fun has been sucked right out of this season

But you wouldn’t know it by reading the sportswriters and some bloggers. Christmas has come early for them and they’ve finally gotten what they wanted. But who am I to interrupt their Happy Dances?

Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry - ESPN

by Nelson... on Dec 14, 2008 1:02 PM CST reply actions

Agreed.

I was so excited for this season. Now it basically learning that Santa isn’t real. Still hoping to get my gifts though!!

by Captain Comeback on Dec 14, 2008 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

I love the Spinal Tap reference, Raf

Let’s hope that the Cowboys’ 11 on each side of the ball, can indeed crank it up to 11. I think they will, and this game will be the turning point of the season….. that is if Romo can shake his December and January generosity. Meaning, don’t be giving the ball to the other team! I think he will. Let’s go, Cowboys!!!!!!

The fumbled snap

must have been one of those secret plays Romo and Witten worked up
