It is time to talk about D Ware taking Strahan's Record

Demarcus Ware leaves the Giants game with 19 sacks. Strahan's record (debateable if his is even legit) is 22.5 according to NFL.com. The man needs four sacks in two games to own the record. We are facing a rookie QB (albeit a good one) Saturday. Ware could break the record next week!

We then face the eagles.... Ware sacked McNabb earlier this season. He also has 6.5 sacks against Philly in 7 games.

Does anyone think this can't happen after tonight?

I've been thinking about the outside chance of this for like 3 weeks

But after tonight’s performance, it is more than an outside chance. He has a really legit shot to break that record

He has a shot.

But it’s going to be tough. He needs 4 in 2 games, and both of those teams are going to be fighting for a playoff spot, so I doubt anyone lays down like Favre did for Strahan.

Ware has a very real chance

I’d put money on it.

i think

ware will beat the record
i mean we lead the league in sacks now pretty handsomly our 53 to pitt’s 47
and u double team ware and rat, spencer, ellis, bradie get u so u gotta cover everyone and ware will capitalize
i hope ware gets atleast 2 sacks next week so all he would need is 1.5 against the eagles

It doesn't really matter if he breaks it this year or not..

because the way his game has progressed this year, and he is no longer simply relying on his speed to be the T, he’s gonna get 30 next year.

He'll get it

the comparison between him and Strahan in his prime isn’t even fair. Ware’s not even peaked yet and looks better than Strahan ever did.

I think he'll get it. But I dont want to jinx it?

Why have they already engraved James Harrison’s name on the Defensive POY?

Harrison's name is?

If so, then Haynesworth’s name is scratched out. He’s been DPOY since like week 2 according to most.

It should be Ware…

If the other def players make plays like they have been the last few games

dware will get more one-on-one opportunities and that improves his chances of breaking that record.

Time to talk about Ware for MVP

Ware will never ever get MVP

I’d love it but that’s just unrealistic. I don’t think a defensive player has won MVP since 1986 (LT).

Sadly I don’t even think Ware will get Defensive Player of the Year. Number one, the media is biased against Dallas. I know – breaking news. Number two, James Harrison is arguably the best player on the league’s best defense. Harrison is just a couple sacks behind Ware but also has 7 forced fumbles, an interception and a safety. The only hope Ware has is to keep it up and hope Troy Polamalu splits the vote with Harrison.

by DavidH22 on Dec 15, 2008 8:53 AM CST reply actions

If Ware breaks the record

Without McNabb rolling over for him, he has a stronger case for DPOY.

MVP might be a little much, like you said.

If the rest of the defense was able to recover loose balls

Ware would have had 2 FF alone last night. Boy do I love looking at the picture of Sheli making his pooping-face while Ware is wrapping him up for the sack.

he gets the forced fumble (FF)

anyways – just no fumble recovery for the team

By all means let's talk

about Ware receiving all sorts of league awards. Dude desrves all the plaudits and recognition coming his way. I love it when good things happen to good people. I still enjoy reading this article every once in a while:

having a breather?

i wonder how much it helps him to get a rest at times – was nice to see that he had at least one series off – presumably with Spencer and Ellis/Burnett taking his place.

by Scoobay on Dec 15, 2008 10:24 AM CST reply actions

Some historical perspective

Since the NFL started officially tracking sack stats in 1982, six players have gotten 20 or more sacks. Of these, only three have won Defensive POY (LT in 1986, Reggie White 1987, Strahan in 2001).

Mark Gastineau (22 in ‘84), Chris Doleman (21 in ’89) and Derrick Thomas (20 in 1990) were left out in the cold. Gastineau was beat out by Kenny Easley (10 ints and 2 TDs, plus Gastineau is an ass), Doleman lost out to his own teammate, Keith Millard (18 sacks), and Derrick Thomas was a rookie – only one rookie (LT in ’81) has ever won DPOY and Bruce Smith (19 sacks) claimed the award. So as you can see, these 20+ sack “losers” all had great competition, as Ware does with Harrison. Let’s see what Ware does in these last two huge games, and what Harrison does in Pittsburgh’s big game against Tennessee for home field advantage.

It will be an interesting vote, is all I can say.

a comparison...

James Harrison
Tackles 94
Solo 63
Ast 31
Sack 15.0
Safety 1
Pass Def 3
Int 1
FF 7

Demarcus Ware
Tackles 74
Solo 61
Ast 13
Sack 19.0
Pass Def 2
Int 0
FF 4
FR 1

Great numbers for both – Harrison is a beast no question. It’ll be close and the next couple games’ performance could swing things one way or another

by Scoobay on Dec 15, 2008 10:58 AM CST reply actions

I agree

Both deserving.. Every other sack for Harrison is a forced fumble.. 75% of the time Pitt D picks up the fumble.

he missed one

It seems Ware doesnt go for the ball. He had a clear shot at the ball on one of his sacks. He needs to be concious of ware the ball is. But I’ll take the sacks anyday. Don’t forget his run support. What’s his TFL numbers

by StarsAlign on Dec 15, 2008 12:43 PM CST reply actions

Ware will shatter Stahan's record

I see him ending up with 25 sacks, 3 in each of the next two games.

He’ll win DPOY with ease.
