Haynesworth can test free agency
The good news for Albert Haynesworth on Tuesday is he made it to the Pro Bowl for the second straight season. But that's potentially bad news for the Titans, who now might have a harder time keeping the defensive tackle around after this season. As a result of the honor, Haynesworth is set to become an unrestricted free agent. One of four triggers in the contract Haynesworth signed in July stated if he made it to the Pro Bowl the team would agree not to place the franchise tag on him for the second straight season. Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, said it not the time to discuss the future.
I actually think he would make a great DE in a 3-4. Him and Ratliff next to each other would be dominant.
But we are going to have to resign Ware as well. He is probably going to want something in the range of 7 years 80 mil, and same with Haynesworth. So I figure we can cut some fat. Cutting bad Roy and Henry will save us around 12 million against the cap.

Haynesworth would make our D more dominant than it is now. It would be ridiculous.

There is no way we could afford it.
He’s going to want more than Tommie Harris got, and that was a ton.

But he'd be much more of a luxury than a necessity.
I know Jerry loves the spotlight, but I just don’t see it happening. I think he’ll be back in TEN.

I don't care how much he wants or how good he is...
I’ve hated this dude with a passion since he stopped Gurode. That was the single most piss-poor act I’ve seen from a professional athlete this side on Ron Artest…screw him. Let someone else overpay and we can “get by” with our Pro Bowl NT…

Rat can be NT and Haynesworth would be DE
by quincyyyyy on Dec 17, 2008 1:31 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think you have it flipped
You’d want Rat at DE and Haynesworth at nose. Haynesworth NEVER rotates outside, whereas Rat has before.
That said, this would be a HUGELY expensive addition for a position that is not even close to an area of need. Our front 7 has been the best in the NFL over the past 6 weeks— why do we need to address it in free agency?

i don't think we can afford it really
we also need to resign Ware, who will command top dollar, and probably Canty or Spears. I do think however that we need a big run stuffing DT, maybe thru the draft or during the June cuts, just get a 2 down player.
also, last year was a contract year, and so is this year, I’m wary of guys who only play lights out in contract years

Haynesworth played lights out last year as well
and cap hell is only a myth. Teams find ways around it every year.
Furthermore, I see Haynesworth more as a DE in a 3-4 than a NT

Better value can be found
We need to find a big, run-stopping plug to put in the middle of the D line. It can be done for less that Haynesworth would command. The dispute with Gurode isn’t the tipping point with me but certainly doesn’t help. With Ware, Ratliff, Spencer, James, and a year or two more from Ellis, we have amassed plenty of pass rushing talent. I want a big 330 lb oaf in the middle to blow up the run.

But I doubt he would play such a position, especially in a 3-4. I believe Rat would be better at DE and then try to get a run-stuffer to play the NT.
I don’t see either happening tho because Ratliff loves playing the nose.

As for Haynesworth and Gurode
I thought Haynesworth showed genuine remorse for the incident, and Gurode forgave him and it was left. Did I misremember?
In the end, I think talented athletes can play together even if they fought or were enemies. I’m sure Gurode would realize that such a move would be made to help the team, and he’d probably be happy to welcome his new teammate.
That said, our defense is shaping up well. Iguess it’s still imperative to get a “real” 3-4 tackle or another 3-4 end?
by DavidH22 on Dec 17, 2008 12:51 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Do we actually need a "real" 3-4 tackle. Rat is good against the run and great in passing
situations. Haynesworth could shed a few pounds and replace Spears, or Canty if we decide not to resign him.

Haynesworth can get a 7 year 75-80 million dollar deal
You don’t pay a guy that kind of money to play DE in a 3-4. It’s just not a playmaking position. you pay a premium on your OLB’s (Ware) anddo what you can to stay inexpensive at the end spots, and just get guys who play the run well, and get marginal push

You pay that kind of money
to DT/DE’s who can get 10 sacks a year and demand double teams on every play. Think how impossible it would be to block Rat and Haynesworth right next to each other.
by quincyyyyy on Dec 17, 2008 3:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Not on this defense you don't.
You already have Ware with 19 sacks, ratliff and ellis with potential for double digits, solid inside pressure from bradie james this year, and a young, potential packed pressure player in Spencer. Would a guy like Haynesworth be swell? Sure he would, but I don’t see how you can justify that kind of investment on a 34 DE when you are going to need to sign D-Ware to an a monster extension. Playmakers are nice, but you can’t have a steak on every plate.

Ratliff just made the Pro Bowl.
That is your dream as a GM. Draft a guy low and inexpensive and have him turn out to be a baller. Sure, Haynesworth is a phenomenal player, but Ratliff is frickin awesome for us. Plus, I’ll never be able to fully root for a player who did such a vicious act against a Cowboys player.

No No No
This team’s #1 priority is a new backup QB.
The #2 priority would be a free safety or strong safety since Hamlin can play either spot and complement the new player.
After that, I would like to see a backup swing OT and a special teams ace.

+1 on the QB
As we have seen, you can lose a running back or two, a guard or two, a corner or two, a safety or two and still be competitive. But if you lose the QB without a quality backup you are virtually dead.
Finding a guy who gives us a chance to win without having to hold the other team to 10 points would be my priority.

You could have far worse back-ups than Kyle Boller.
Sure, if he was half as good as Brian Billick thought he was going to be when he originally drafted him, he’d have won 3-4 MVP’s by now. On the other hand, he has had several 4-TD pass games sadly including one against Vinny And The Boys in ‘04. He’s played stretches of good football before.
Besides, a back-up QB has earned that status for a reason. As sorry as Brad Johnson’s geezer butt is, if you take a look at who else was out there to be had at QB, the pickings were pretty slim. The best guy was probably Gus Fartrotte and all things being equal he was probably headed to the Vikings anyways since he knew he’d have the best chance to start there.
After that, you had Trent Green (who’s taken way too many shots) Byron Leftwich (who couldn’t even win the Falcons job in ’07) and guys like Quinn Gray and Mark Brunell.

You do realize that there isn’t really a "Defensive End," per say in a 3/4 defense right?
DE is more of a 4/3 term and that role is normally filled in a 3/4 set by an outside linebacker who will play on the line on any given play, (i.e. Demarcus Ware and /or Greg Ellis on 3rd and long). Typically the player will be undersized as defensive linemen but over sized as a Linebacker so he’s more of a hybrid, (again think Ware or Ellis).
A 3/4 defense normally has a nose tackle, a right defensive tackle and a left defensive tackle, (so if you’re talking about putting Haynesworth in one of those spots than it could be interesting).
But ultimately I think this team could make its defense better without having to bring in a big name like Haynesworth, (especially since he’d have to become accustomed to an entirely different role playing in a 3/4). There is something to be said for a solid role player, who flies under the radar, and gets the job done, (look no further than New England for an example of a team that finds these types of players). Especially on a team that has more than filled is super star quota like the Cowboys have.

Further more it’s just not an area of need for this team. I’d much prefer they find a solid back up QB in the free agent market along with another OT.
In the draft I’d love too see them find an NT and a wide out to groom for the future, (just in case Roy doesn’t pan out).

You do realize the correct terminology is Defensive End, right?
And if you can add a disruptive player to your d-line you do it. Games are won and lost in the trenches.

I guess I don't understand why everyone thinks
that Haynesworth can just come in and play a 3-4 end. I know he’s a great player and a great athlete, but I think it’s foolish to assume he can make the switch and still be as dominant.
by Mandmeisterx on Dec 18, 2008 11:27 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think it's far more likely than not he will be dominant
He has the skills and size to be a great 3-4 DE and a 3-4 DE has many of the same responsibilities of a 4-3 DT

He doesnt have the lateral movement he would need to maintain the same level of play he can give yop in the middle. Why pay him a ton to move him where wont be worth as much.

Haynesworth would make this defense one of the most dominant of all time…….I don’t see it happening…but if Jerry wants the man….you have no objections here………….

Roy Williams-S- two years left on contract
Anthony Henry-CB-one year left on contract

Sam Hurd-WR-RFA
Kev Burnett-LB-FA
We can afford any damn player out there (including Haynesworth) AND extend Demarcus Ware……
btw….Haynesworth would play NT here….6’6" 325lbs…NOT DE

I would also like for us to resign Burnett, but if we were able to get a FA LB like Carlos Dansby from Arizona...I'd drop Burnett in a heart beat...
Dansby is a major FA, and will command top dollar for a LB…Arizona will more than likely franchise him….but he would be my target IF i was GM…Zack isn’t going to play much longer , and we have NOOOOOO depth at all at LB…Dansby is better than Zack and James…and can play outside if needed as well…
Canty has played himself into a middle of the road free agent contract….and as much as i’d like to see him stay, I gather he’ll get better offers elsewhere that Jerry won’t match…

Haynesworth weighs 30 pounds more than Ratliff
Why on earth are people talking about putting Haynesworth at 3-4 DE and Ratliff at NT? If you signed Haynesworth, you’d put him on the nose and Rat outside. But 1) it’s not an area of need AT ALL— our front 7 has been the best in the NFL over the psat 5 weeks, and 2) it would be HUGELY expensive for a NT, especially considering we already have one.
Just extend Canty and Ware, our front 7 is just fine.
