5 Things That Make Me Smile
1. The Defense is peaking at the right time. Defense wins championships and the play on that side of the ball is better than anything I can remember seeing Dallas do. Even under JJ the defense never felt this intimidating. They were fast and suffocating, but this is an overwhelming D.
2. We have a clutch kicker. A stifling defense and a clutch kicker can take us far.
3. (knock on wood) It seems like the injury report is moving the right way now. (knock on wood). It seems like more guys are getting healthy than getting hurt and while we are thin at safety, I think having Henry play FS and Hamlin at SS might be the best secondary line up we can field. With Pac back and Jenkins getting better than is possible.
4. The offense (though overshadowed by the D) is still explosive. Tashard choice is giving us some newfound energy and a never say die attitude and we still have enough weapons to hold our own in a shoot out.
5. The press is still skeptical. After the win some one on ESPN said "Dallas delayed their implosion." Peter King's comment after the Giant win was that we couldnt afford to lose to Pittsburgh. This team has seemed to do the exact opposite of what the pundits expect and they seem to expect an implosion.

i disagree
you hit the nail on the head with your number 1 choice…The defense has been outstanding and is the reason i am smiling so much…defense does win in dec and in the playoffs…#9 is exteamly important as well but that defense has been awesome and will carry us into the playoffs….

i actually get excited when our d comes off the field
its crazy i’ve never seen the ‘boys d like this since maybe the 90’s
u could make the argument that the 08 version is better..but let’s see how everything pans out especially with these last 2 games and the playoffs (hopefully)

i agree… i have never felt this away about the cowboys d since romo has been starting… its always been, ok O, lets score 30 points and blow this team out of the water… but now, its ok D, lets sack this qb two times and force a fumble or pic 6… our defense is, dare i say, exciting to watch

Your raging manboner and accompanying paranoia over anything that could be construed as critical of Romo truly is a sight to behold, Terrence.
And I say this as a devout Romomaniac myself.

Terry
the reason Romo under center doesnt make me smile is that while i think he puts up great stats, and is one of the best qb’s in the league, i think he is unwilling to drive the bus. i get the sense he would rather go 35-44 with 3 td’s and 2 picks and lose a nail biter than go 3-9 and win. i hope i am wrong. i just get the sense he “has fun out there” and that is why he plays vs aikman or staubach who just want to win. again, i hope i am wrong.
but reading the boards tonight, it was shocking the number of fans who thought the game was over when we were down 9 to a mediocre offense with 2min left in the THIRD Q.
i like Romo, i hope he improves, i recognize he is par of the teams incredibly limited success over the last three years, but i think he is also one of the things keeping them from crossing the chasm. i assume that changes, but until it does, seeing him under center in a big game makes me nerrrrrrrrrrrvous

well
no matter the psychology, he needs to learn how to play better in december.
he forces too many throws for this time of year. he has a very good defense and he needs to drive the bus and let demarcus ware win games.
if we have learned one thing, its DWare’s team and Romo just works here

he played pretty good last week
and I think that game was in December, and as a matter of fact, the GMen game was much more important than Steelers or Balt games.

Agreed
Whenever the offense goes on the field I feel like Tony is gonna throw a pick I dont know why he just scares me. Keep giving it to Choice on that screen pass that was working so effectively against the Giants and we will be just fine against the Ravens.

5. The press is still skeptical.

If you listen to the media
You’d think everyone else that’s 9-5 is just fantastic (including Tampa who has lost 2 straight now). But when it comes to Dallas, they are the worst 9-5 team of all time and will miss the playoffs.
Honestly… I’m glad. I prefer that this team be underestimated.

The thing is
The overall performance of the season works against us in the media’s eyes, as well it should. The performance I saw last week changed my mind 100% and I have a better feeling for this team now than I have all season.
What I want is for Romo to seize this opportunity, have no more bad games this season and take us to the promised land. The D will hold up its end of the bargain but Romo and the O must tie the knot for us to get #6.
by Billito on Dec 19, 2008 5:55 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
They should be somewhat unsure that the team will make the playoffs as they do not have an easy road and they lost in Pittsburgh. A win in Pittsburgh and we would be nearly a shoe in and still have a shot at the divsion. As is, one or three bad breaks could cause the team to lose a game they should win and put Dallas on the outside looking in.
That said, they should not be skeptical that Dallas is a really talented team that is playing well at the end of the season. They out played Pittsburgh and destroyed the Giants. They hold Dallas to a different standard then they hold lesser teams. If Dallas lost to Philly in six feet of snow after losing half their starters to freek injuries, many pundits would say it is because they lack heart and choak in the big games.

Defense
I always have faith with Romo under center, although he does have that “heart-attack” inducing style of play…but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Although, the defense is obivously the number 1 thing going right now for this team. As someone said earlier…I actually get excited now when this D hits the field. It’s only a matter of time before this D scores some points as well. I’m truly confident in this squad as long as this defense plays as it has been.
by DorneyDave on Dec 19, 2008 1:38 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I love the defense...
But this team will need to imporve on the other side of the ball if they’re going to win a Super Bowl.

Defense is our backbone this year, which gives the offense some time to work out its kinks. Rather have it this way than the other way around—that’s for sure.
George Teague did it all.

The offense was pretty good when Romo and Barber where healthy. Time is on Barber’s side. It is also on Holland’s. Choice should be able to suplement Barber and provide a different look for defense to contain.
If the Cowboys get past the two December hurdles and the offense should be healthy enough to hold up their side of the bargain.

They see themselves as right until proven wrong
Many pundents predicted the Cowboys as dead in late October and are not going to reverse position their until Dallas clinches a playoff spot. They will see any loss as evidence that they were right in October despite how well the defense is playing.
Many pundits also factor in the schedule when comparing teams. They are fairly sure TB makes the playoffs because they face two sub 500 teams and are less then sure Dallas is able to finish out with two tough wins. Therefor they pick Tampa as the stronger team. One talking head said that any team that fails to make the playoffs should not have been rated better then thirteenth place. This kind of thinking is flawed, but so what , fooball pundits do not do anything so important that they should be required to be balanced or accountable.

sounds like the pundits
have a lot in common with a lot of Cowboys fans on this blog.

Don't start Terry
you can’t call anyone out for having doubts this season, the cowboys underperformed and were creating a lot of drama. I am feeling better now than I have all year due to the play of Romo and the D. Just because I was distraught after the Pitts game doesn’t mean I didn’t care.
by Billito on Dec 19, 2008 5:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
the amusing thing is...
if the guys pull it out it will be for the exact opposite of what most people expected.
yes, romo came back, but the real catalyst was the defense played lights out.
i think wade deserves some credit. maybe we can reward him by making d-coordinator next year….

Too true.
Over at the old site, while plenty of the regulars tried to remain level-headed, plenty of guys who definitely aren’t idiots about the game whatsoever were stating 7-9 was a mere formality and one bundle of joy even told everybody to brace themselves for 5-11. Of course, that was the same rather obtuse fellow who made absolutely no distinction between a Romo-led Cowboys and Brad Johnson-led version of the team; even though the former is the second-highest rated passer in the league and the latter is no longer fit to even be a backup in the CFL. So on one hand, you had the Blue and Silver Report but then you had a larger than you’d think faction who I think the initials BSR actually meant BS Ranch because these negative Nancies were full of it.

I love Romo and have been a big supporter of his but
In certain games against stout Ds and in bad weather he needs to know when to reel in his gunslinger mentality and trust his D more. The D trusts him he needs to return the favor. Its ok for the D to win a game. Dont continously put them in bad situations with no rest and crappy field position.
by squidlo97 on Dec 20, 2008 11:05 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
I agree 100%
I love #9 but he needs to realize its ok to be a bus driver some days.
Heck, seems like winning the Lombardi is more about driving the bus than shooting the lights out most years – by that i mean the game itself not getting there.
Watching against the Steelers after Choice lost yardage I said aloud “we are going to lose this game arent we? romo is going to toss an interception.”
I trust our D a lot more than Romo these days.
by 325424 on Dec 20, 2008 11:56 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm ashamed to admit this.
But I felt even had Romo not pooped all over Heinz Field, he was in no particular mental state to produce a field goal in regulation or overtime and furthermore that the way the game was going and as much as the Cowboys defense had dominated for the first 50 minutes if the Steelers got the ball back they were going to kick the winning field goal. Old lady momentum was with the bastids by that point.

Nice List ... here is my top 5:
D K I O P
1. Defense is peaking (I agree this is what has carried us lately)
2. Romo is playing. I really can’t believe Romo still has detractors amongst true Cowboys fans. All the guy has done is save this franchise from mediocrity and post QB ratings that are tops in the league.
3. 2008 Draft. Without this group, the team doesn’t make the playoffs. Period.
4. All the memories Texas Stadium has given all of us fortunate enough to pull for America’s Team.
5. I’m grateful for Minnesota, Washington and the Chargers for strong performances tomorrow… and Green Bay Monday night.
Duane Thomas, Calvin Hill, Tony Dorsett, Emmitt Smith ... and now BOTH Marion Barber and Felix Jones
