Sunday games open thread
It's difficult to even contemplate watching NFL football today after what transpired last night at Texas Stadium. But, for those of you who are like me and still want to desperately make the playoffs, there are a couple of very important games happening this Sunday.
From what I can gather we are rooting hard for the Vikings to beat the Falcons and for the Chargers to beat the Bucs.
This is an open thread for the Sunday games, including the night game which features the big showdown between the Giants and the Panthers.
Playoff scenarios:
If the Falcons lose today, they can't match us on conference record which is the second tie-breaker and we would get in as long as we win next week.
If the Bucs lose today, the best they could do is tie us for overall record and we own the head-to-head tiebreaker over them, the first tie-breaking criteria as long as we win next week.
It doesn't matter what the Eagles do today, if we beat them next week, we end up with a better overall record.
It doesn't matter what the Bears do today because if we win next week we have the better overall conference record.
If any of that is wrong, let me know and I'll update it.

No one is giving SD a chance, but Garcia is fresh off injury and Rivers will play well.
Week 16 and LT is STILL due to break out.
If that fails at 1pm, All day AP will run all over those falcons at home at 4pm!!!
WE’RE GETTING IN!!!

The Chargers barely beat Kansas city last week at home
and west teams coming east are complete dogs, SD has nothing to play for and tampa has everything to plays for, I like Tampa
The best bet is Minn to beat the falcons

if san diego wins today
and denver loses today against the bills (yea i know they suck)
but then next week denver and san diego play for the division
and if an 8-8 teams win a division and gets in the playoffs than something is seriously wrong with the nfl
Superbowl or Bust?
by MrMinority on Dec 21, 2008 11:58 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Dallas did that
In 1999. We went 8-8, won the East, then lost to the Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs.
by Philosopher on Dec 21, 2008 12:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Don't Forget
If the Chargers get to 8-8 and win the division they are only 8-8 because Ed Hochuli stole a win from them against Denver in week two.
I’m rooting for them to get the chance. If they lose next week, they lose, but they should get the chance to play for it. Buffalo has fought for a half and is only down three, so Norv’s guys are still alive.
by Rafael Vela on Dec 21, 2008 4:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
SD is still alive and in a must-win situation, they will play hard.
LETS GO CHARGERS!

i have a feeling
san diego will win and so will minnesota
i also would like the skins to win but idk
as long as tampa and atl both lose then we can still beat the eagles and get in
if we do get in to the playoffs i dont see us getting far if we cant beat good teams
so lets just concentrate on getting in the playoffs first and then actually win the first game before anything else

correct
You are right Dave, but ESPN is confusing everyone because they are reporting that the Cowboys must win and the Bucs must lose BOTH games and the Falcons must lose one game.
It’s just ridiculous how awful that network is.

Well
Tampa must lose for us to ge tin over them, but if Atlanta loses that means nothing.
by joey7289 on Dec 21, 2008 12:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No, If tampa wins they'll get the 5 seed.
If Atlanta loses they’ll be tied with us again, we’ll have the tiebreaker over Atlanta. We have the tiebreaker over Chicago (if they win) and it’ll come down to us vs. Philly for the 6th seed.
Like I said, we only need ATL OR SD to lose today, not both.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 21, 2008 12:11 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think this is right, according to NFL.com
http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures
——————-
Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.
Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
———————
If we end up tied with TB AND CHI, then our head-to-head win over TB no longer breaks the tie. So, we need either an ATL loss OR a TB AND CHI loss.

Lol... ESPN reported some false info on their pregame show today.
Just look at the standings and look at the wild card tiebreakers. Your scenario would be correct if Atlanta was going to win the division by winning out, but Carolina has already clinched it. Trust.

In the grand scheme of things, does anyone really give a big rat's ass?
If we do make the playoffs, we still have Wade/Garrett and their minions of underachievers calling the plays; Romo at QB giving up a minimum 2 picks per game; and dissention in the locker room.

Let me get this right
Dallas: 9-6 (H2H tie breaker over TB & Conf record tie breaker over ATL & Chicago)
TB: 9-5
ATL: 9-5
Chi: 8-6 (best possible finish is 10-6 so we own them if we win)
All of this assumes we win in PHI and TB/ATL win next week:
Scenario #1:
Tampa loses to SD they are 9-6
ATL wins v Min they are 10-6
Boys get the 6th seed
Scenario #2:
Tampa and ATL both lose and end up 9-6
Boys get 5th seed
Scenario #3:
ATL loses go 9-6
Tampa wins go to 10-6
We get 6th seed
Scenario #4
ATL and Tampa win, and we get to start worrying about the college bowl games
Did i miss anything? Because apparently the World Wide Leader of Sports cant figure this out

look at the Giants. look at the Cards. we’ve had some real problems, but we’ve also shown some real good stuff over the last few weeks. Personally, I say if you make the playoffs, you’re ready for the playoffs, and you just go win that first game. We can beat any team in this league right now if we put together a complete effort.

The general sentiment in the pressers last night from Romo, To etc….was that not having experience against the Ravens blitz packages hurt us…. (that and having a crap O coordinator…lol)

Dalai, everyone is just very upset at the loss last night. Myself included.
There is still hope though. It’s frustration, knowing how well this team can play.
What the he$$ happened on those two long runs for td’s? Bad tackling for sure. That stunk. The defense was playing well the first half then bam. I almost puked.

torch, myself included... I was so frustrated at the team last night
but today’s a new day, and TB just gave us all an early Xmas present, so let’s get psyched about clinching in front of some philly fans! i am psyched, but grizz is right, and I shouldn’t be calling out people either.

That was one of the absolute worst moments I can remember as a fan.
The fact that is was the last game at Texas Stadium….that will haunt me for a long time…

i can't believe Detroit just cost me like that
down at the 7 yard line, down by 35, they don’t put the points on the board.
turnover on downs- i lose a sweet 4-team parlay

Its kinda amazing...
As brutal as that loss was last night,(I was drinking for hours after the game….just broken) we’re right back in the same position we would’ve been if won….
I don’t think I’ve ever gotten over a tough loss so quick as seeing TB lose….
Beat the Eagles and we’re in!!!!
Thank you SD!!!!

No it doesn't. If Philly losses to Washington, but the Vikings beat the Falcons, the winner of DAL/PHI next week gets in.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 21, 2008 3:17 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yea
so we have to win regardless anyways
so lets just win the game next week
Superbowl or Bust?
by MrMinority on Dec 21, 2008 3:18 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Correct. Philly, Chicago, Atlanta doesn't affect us since TB lost.
If we win, we’re in. If Philly wins, they will be in, if they win today and Atlanta loses.

Attention! We still need an ATL or CHI loss!!!!!!
http://www.latimes.com/sports/football/nfl/la-sp-nflplayoffscenarios21-2008dec21,0,1397069.story
>>>Dallas can clinch a playoff spot next week with: 1) a win or tie against Philadelphia and an Atlanta loss; 2) a win and a loss or tie by Chicago and a Tampa Bay loss; 3) a win and an Atlanta loss, a Chicago loss or tie and a Tampa Bay loss.

mike, we win next week, we're in... end of story
Duane Thomas, Calvin Hill, Tony Dorsett, Emmitt Smith ... and now BOTH Marion Barber and Felix Jones
by DalaiLuke on Dec 21, 2008 3:21 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think so
Not according to this AP story anyway. That’s because is we end up at 10-6 with CHI and TB, our head-to-head win against TB doesn’t count since we didn’t play CHI, so you go to conference record and then common opponents.
by mikedallas45 on Dec 21, 2008 3:24 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Please don't listen to the AP, they are garbage
If we win next week, and Chicago wins their last 2….we have a 1 game lead on them in conference record. That eliminates them from the Dal/TB tie, then our head to head with TB gets us in.

The real question should be
Which game will be moved to NBC sunday night football
Dallas/philly
or
Miami/Jets
by Deke on Dec 21, 2008 3:20 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
According to Fat Francessa, there's only a 5% that game gets moved to SNF.
He’s so wrong. It’ll be announced tomorrow.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 21, 2008 3:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
THEY dont move the last game of the year i thought
i thought flex was from like 10-16week
What the French?! Toast!
by thebigham on Dec 21, 2008 3:22 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No, they do
I just thought that both teams having had 5 prime time games aready and that disqualifeid you from being moved to another primetime game, but I was wrong on that
by Deke on Dec 21, 2008 3:24 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That's what they said originally, but the NFL was quick to point out
that there was some technicality that allowed this game to get flexed. They probably made it up just in time lol.
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 21, 2008 3:27 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
we have to win anyways
we win and we’re in
thats it
no more scenarios
just win the game and make the playoffs

by MrMinority on Dec 21, 2008 3:20 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
LOL, it's funny to look at the crazy scenarios people have been coming up with today. And I bet they'll continue throughout the night...
It’s very simple, TB or ATL needed to lose and we win and we’re in. We got our help, now finish the job cowboys!
by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 21, 2008 3:23 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I Thought Dallas and Philadelphia
Was ineligible, since Dallas has already been on prime the max number of times.

o well ill take a cowboys playoff win over fantasy
