Sunday games open thread
It's difficult to even contemplate watching NFL football today after what transpired last night at Texas Stadium. But, for those of you who are like me and still want to desperately make the playoffs, there are a couple of very important games happening this Sunday.
From what I can gather we are rooting hard for the Vikings to beat the Falcons and for the Chargers to beat the Bucs.
This is an open thread for the Sunday games, including the night game which features the big showdown between the Giants and the Panthers.
Playoff scenarios:
If the Falcons lose today, they can't match us on conference record which is the second tie-breaker and we would get in as long as we win next week.
If the Bucs lose today, the best they could do is tie us for overall record and we own the head-to-head tiebreaker over them, the first tie-breaking criteria as long as we win next week.
It doesn't matter what the Eagles do today, if we beat them next week, we end up with a better overall record.
It doesn't matter what the Bears do today because if we win next week we have the better overall conference record.
If any of that is wrong, let me know and I'll update it.

No one is giving SD a chance, but Garcia is fresh off injury and Rivers will play well.
Week 16 and LT is STILL due to break out.
If that fails at 1pm, All day AP will run all over those falcons at home at 4pm!!!
WE’RE GETTING IN!!!

The Chargers barely beat Kansas city last week at home
and west teams coming east are complete dogs, SD has nothing to play for and tampa has everything to plays for, I like Tampa
The best bet is Minn to beat the falcons
if san diego wins today
and denver loses today against the bills (yea i know they suck)
but then next week denver and san diego play for the division
and if an 8-8 teams win a division and gets in the playoffs than something is seriously wrong with the nfl
Superbowl or Bust?
Dallas did that
In 1999. We went 8-8, won the East, then lost to the Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs.
by Philosopher on Dec 21, 2008 12:01 PM CST up reply actions
Don't Forget
If the Chargers get to 8-8 and win the division they are only 8-8 because Ed Hochuli stole a win from them against Denver in week two.
I’m rooting for them to get the chance. If they lose next week, they lose, but they should get the chance to play for it. Buffalo has fought for a half and is only down three, so Norv’s guys are still alive.
i have a feeling
san diego will win and so will minnesota
i also would like the skins to win but idk
as long as tampa and atl both lose then we can still beat the eagles and get in
if we do get in to the playoffs i dont see us getting far if we cant beat good teams
so lets just concentrate on getting in the playoffs first and then actually win the first game before anything else
Superbowl or Bust?
correct
You are right Dave, but ESPN is confusing everyone because they are reporting that the Cowboys must win and the Bucs must lose BOTH games and the Falcons must lose one game.
It’s just ridiculous how awful that network is.
thelandryhat.com New Coach, Same America's Team
Well
Tampa must lose for us to ge tin over them, but if Atlanta loses that means nothing.
by joey7289 on Dec 21, 2008 12:08 PM CST up reply actions
No, If tampa wins they'll get the 5 seed.
If Atlanta loses they’ll be tied with us again, we’ll have the tiebreaker over Atlanta. We have the tiebreaker over Chicago (if they win) and it’ll come down to us vs. Philly for the 6th seed.
Like I said, we only need ATL OR SD to lose today, not both.

I don't think this is right, according to NFL.com
http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures
——————-
Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.
Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
———————
If we end up tied with TB AND CHI, then our head-to-head win over TB no longer breaks the tie. So, we need either an ATL loss OR a TB AND CHI loss.

I don't even want to think about it
Last night’s loss feels like a playoff loss. Come this time of year. ever year for a long time, they are such a disappointment.
wow
miami already scored on some wildcat crap
i mean even if we’re good enough to not use cheap crap like the wildcat formation
but we should try it once or twice, like give crayton a shot on a reverse to throw a pass
Superbowl or Bust?

SCENARIO
Cowboys Must Beat Eagles Week 17
Falcons Must Lose 1 of Last 2 Games
Or
Buccaneers Must Lose Last 2 Games

Right now Arizona is the weakest of the 3 and 4 seeds.
Tarvaris Jackson is coming down to earth but Peterson could go off at any time.
Arizona’s defense has collapsed the last month.
Just get in. I’ll take my chances against either of those teams.
Atl plays the Rams next week at home
Rams aren’t winning that one. Today against the Vikings is the game we want Atl to lose
Dude, again, not true.
If TB loses one of their last two they are tied with us, and we have the head-to-head tie breaker over them.
Where do you guys keep coming up with these cochamonie scenarios? LOL

Just look at the standings and look at the wild card tiebreakers. Your scenario would be correct if Atlanta was going to win the division by winning out, but Carolina has already clinched it. Trust.

If we do make the playoffs, we still have Wade/Garrett and their minions of underachievers calling the plays; Romo at QB giving up a minimum 2 picks per game; and dissention in the locker room.

Let me get this right
Dallas: 9-6 (H2H tie breaker over TB & Conf record tie breaker over ATL & Chicago)
TB: 9-5
ATL: 9-5
Chi: 8-6 (best possible finish is 10-6 so we own them if we win)
All of this assumes we win in PHI and TB/ATL win next week:
Scenario #1:
Tampa loses to SD they are 9-6
ATL wins v Min they are 10-6
Boys get the 6th seed
Scenario #2:
Tampa and ATL both lose and end up 9-6
Boys get 5th seed
Scenario #3:
ATL loses go 9-6
Tampa wins go to 10-6
We get 6th seed
Scenario #4
ATL and Tampa win, and we get to start worrying about the college bowl games
