Defending Wade Phillips
A lot of cowboy homers want to see Wade gone. I'm not so sure I like that idea. He has had a tough year to prove he needs to stay after everyone anoited Big Red.
My defense for Wade to get another year:
1. First and foremost Wade has done a remarkeable job juggling personel with the injuries. At CB he has gotten a lot out of Scandrick, Jenkins and even Alan Ball, and has put Pacman in a position to make plays without being vunerable to the big play. At safety, he has dealt with what he has and even started shifting henry to FS, which worked out pretty well. He aquired Montrae Holland, which for 6 quarters did alright untill he was hurt. And that ST guru we got from San Diego has done alright too (is his name polk?). Not to mention using Witten/Martellus as a FB when Deon went down for a while.
2. Since taking over defensive play calling duties there isnt much to complain about from a Wade stand point. Wade didnt lose the Pittsburgh game, turnovers by the QB, and miscommunication on offense did (romo, witten, garrett please stand up)
3. The Baltimore loss cant be put on the head coach entirely. Romo's pick before the half added 3 points. Garrett calling an option-play that we havent run all year with a rookie running back inside the redzone on 3rd down is rediculous. The special teams giving up a fake field goal is unacceptable. Missed Tackles down the stretch, and poor offensive blocking schemes killed us too.
4. Redskins loss - where is felix? why does barber only touch the ball 8 times, but TO has 2 reverses? T New slipping twice didnt help either. Not on Wade. (though the 12-men on the field penalty kinda killed us)
5. Arizona loss - Special Teams sucked, opening kickoff TD, blocked punt, folk's missed FG before half. O-Line was miserable pressured Romo all game, leading to 2 fumbles and a broken pinky. Wade cant do anything about Larry Fitzgerald leaping two defenders to make crazy catches (twice).
Anything that happened without Romo I believe is a wash, and maybe wade's biggest downside was believing BJ was capable of filling in if romo was out, but that falls on Jerry just as much. With Romo out the whole team was lackluster in everything they did, and maybe that falls on Wade too. But when Romo is in there the team plays with fire, and the defense plays Wade's game to near perfection. If only Jason Garrett and Tony Romo can put points on the board for the defense, we got a shot.

Many people are looking over how well the draft worked out for us this year too. It would have been better to have a healthy felix….but still. Choice and Bennet are filling in nicely.

I really don't want to see Wade go
And the reason is much easier for me, the defense has become what we all were hoping for since he arrived. That overrides any other complaints I can think of.
And since Jerry seems to have made it clear he isn’t going to fire Wade (per Chris Mortenson’s reports), I’m not concerned about it.

i like Wade
but ultimately he makes the decisions and should bear the responsibilities.
if felix doesn’t get the ball during the Washington game, that’s on Wade as much as it is on Garrett.
One thing that we can put on Jerry is the Hudson Houck hiring. Didn’t Wade have his own guy picked, and Jerry overruled him? This o-line has definitely not played as well this year.

difference
I didn’t say lights out defense, I said championship caliber.. With the offense in place, our defense has more then it’s part.. With a Pro Bowl QB, 2 Pro-Bowl WR’s, Pro Bowl TE, 3 Pro-bowl lineman, and rb averaging 5+ yds a carry why are going 3 and out so often? We should at least be controlling the clock and the field position battle.

Um, I hate to burst your bubble, but
Regarding the 2008 edition of the Dallas Cowboys:
- We do not have a pro bowl quarterback
- We do not have a pro bowl wide receiver, much less two
- Two of our offensive linemen are going to the pro bowl, not three – and one is a backup.
- MB3’s ypc are down from 4.8 last season to 3.7 ypc this season. Felix was a stud before getting hurt and Choice has been very nice indeed. Collectively, they the three average a solid 4.5 ypc, but it isn’t over 5.0. Perhaps Choice can maintain his average of 5+ over the long haul, but I doubt it.
Point being this offense isn’t littered with Pro Bowlers, and expectations are often set too high based on past performance as opposed to current reality. We are currently ranked 9th in the NFL based on yards per game and 14th in points scored. We have a nice offense, but it isn’t a juggernaut by any stretch.

I got news for you Louie
If you make the pro bowl on multiple occasions, you’re a pro bowler whether you get voted in that current year or not. Romo was injured for 3 games and T.O. had an off year…they’re pro bowlers and T.O. is a future HOFer for crying out loud.
And while our offense isn’t a jauggernaut , it certainly has the potential to be one.

I have news for you Terry
You need to seek medical help.
I have a friend who is a psychiatrist. I mentioned you to him because I have never run across someone who so obsessed about anything as the level of your obsession with Tony Romo. Interested, he reviewed a significant number of your posts. While he obviously cannot do a complete diagnosis without meeting you, his professional opinion is that you seek the help of a psychiatrist in the Pittsburgh area. I suspect your family and co-workers would agree.
From one Cowboy fan to another, I hope you get the help you need because your obsession with Romo cannot be a healthy thing.

+1 I'm tired of you guys blaming Wade for on field penalties............
that’s the most bogus out i’ve ever read………Ellis is right over the ball (looking) at the ball…TWICE and jumps off sides………………First thing I was taught in the pee wee leagues as a defensive tackle was to focus on the ball !!!!!!!!!!!! The movement of the damn ball, hard count my ass….It’s STUPIDITY …only explaination…….How these clowns jump offsides while being lined up a foot or two from the ball is beyond me and explaination……You can’t coach that, you can’t diisipline that, you can’t do nothing about it……..STUPID PEOPLE DO STUPID THINGS …..I have line up on or near the line of scrimmage well over 2,000 times in my life and not once was called for offsides, why not ??…cuz my eye was on that damn ball every single play…….It’s really not so hard.

It's also probably one of the many
reasons you’re not playing today Boyz. “Jumping the count” is done by every d-lineman in the League. The great ones are really proficient at it. It’s why QBs change their cadence, why they hard count. If 90% of the d-lineman watched the ball only, QBs wouldn’t use a hard count since it does cause their own guys to jump ocassionally.
“Watch the ball” is easy for the announcers to harp on, cuz everybody played Pee-Wee ball and heard that from their coaches. But if you want that step, sometimes you gotta take that chance.
To me, the plays that Greg has made this year easily outweigh his offsides penalties. Frustrating when they happen, hell yeah, but ya gotta take the good with the bad in this case IMO.

well...i went far beyond pee wee's...believe that...
and i disagree that every d-lineman jumps offsides with regularity…..it usually happens mayb e once or twice a game tops….It’s lacking focus…Ellis was over the nose on both those plays, a foot from the ball…….I know how to jump the count, as I was a blitzing OLB/DE as the years progressed….It’s more based on tendencies of the center, and you look for tells, kinda like playing poker….I understand when a QB “hard counts”…It makes some players flinch…even if they’re not trying to go off the snap count…The best pass rushers in the game have already taken their first step before the QB has control of the ball……….and yes…it’s movement based…watch D Ware….He doesn’t project the snap count…he is off on the first minute movement of the ball…..sometimes before the ref’s even pick up the movement…….hard counts are what draws off the “dummy’s” and the “unfocused”….I even used to put cotton in my ears to totally drown out all noise……maybe we need to go back to basics with half this team…..I must admit…I don’t think we have any Rhodes Scholars on our squad….cuz when the coaches call out execution as the main problem for our troubles…that’s pretty much calling this roster a bunch of dummy’s……..and i’m starting to agree..

I’ve been saying that since Wade was hired. The “aw shucks” mentality coupled with stupid challenges, poor use of time out’s, mental errors and his indecision about taking control of the defense (until Jerry told him to) tells me Wade is a coordinator in Head Coach’s clothing.
Wade must go.
Dallas needs a change in culture, starting with the Head Coach.

The ONLY thing that I could pin on Wade, if it is true
Is the so called divided locker room. I didn’t believe it until I saw Brad Sham say on NFL network before the game the other night that he believes it is divided somewhat.
If that is true and Wade can’t fix it, we can’t keep him.
Other than that, I hope he’s back next year. Especially if Garrett really is the HC in waiting. He is NOT ready.

IF the locker is divided , it's because of Garrett......plain and simple...
Garrett should be fired at the end of this season…NOT Wade Phillips…I can tell from watching Wade’s press conference today that he’s tired of the offensive woes and he doesn’t back Garrett at all…….I for one was begging and pleading for San Diego to lose out this season and hopefully cost Norv Turner his job…just so he can come back here as OC…but SD has turned it all around cuz Norv the HC did exactly what Wade the HC should do, HE FIRED his DC cuz of their lackluster play…..Jerry really needs to admit a mistake it was taking on a clown with no play calling experience, thinking his “genius” in the making was the next best thing….These veteran stars need an established play caller running the offense…not some friggin intern trying to learn on the fly……..enough already…

I disagree with this post for a number of reason.
The first two points just illustrate that Wade is a good DC, but it is his ability as a head coach that is in question. The third point when you blame Garrett for making a call that would have worked if Choice could hold onto the ball also doesnt make sense. The call was a good one, but the execution was poor, also what does that have to do with Wade’s ability to be an NFL HC? The fourth point best shows what I am talking about. Felix didnt have enough runs, which is not Wade the DC fault, but as HC Wade should have said something to Garrett.
Wade has been and is a great DC, but he is not a good HC.

you either motion Choice right, or pitch it…..you don’t draw the entire defense to the right and delay the pitch to the RB like Romo was FOOLING anyone by actually running with it…geeez……defending the play is absurd….Choice was a mere 2 feet away to receive the pitch on the fly, while watching the defense zero in on him….IF Romo just turned and pitched it off the snap…..he would have had a greater distance to adjust to the receit of the ball, then make his decision on where to take it up field…It was a non sense high school play…..probably drawn up by his old man back in Jersey……….FIRE DA BUM

I say it was a good call, just poor execution.
That may be because the players had not practised the play much, but TC had this to say after the game.
However, Choice said the Cowboys had worked on that play plenty in practice, specifically to run against the Ravens.
“We got the look we wanted,” Choice said. “I just didn’t catch the ball clean. I tried to run first.”

I really don’t understand it, unless it’s a Bobby Bowden-soon-to-be-retired scenario. Everyone complains because Wade doesn’t take charge, but he knows he’s not a long-term coach. So do the players. So does Jason Garrett. Obviously I wouldn’t go as far as to say Garrett would suck on purpose because he knows he’s safe. What bothered me were the comments during the Ravens game
Supposedly the Ravens said before the game that the offense was predictable, and with the Ravens players essentially calling out the play before it was run DURING the game I would guess that it’s true. They must be tipping them somehow, by formation or personnel packages or something. Now, that doesn’t mean that Red Ball can’t learn from that and be more innovative NEXT year, but it’s no guarantee. A little Self-Scouting would be in order. They’d still have to figure out HOW they wer tipping them off.

play calling isn't as important as execution
It shouldn’t matter if the opposing team knows whats coming, what matters is each player executing and winning their individual match up.
If players execute the way they’re supposed, it really doesn’t matter how simple the plays are or if the defense knows what coming, the offense will win.
In the ‘60s, all opposing defenses knew the Packer sweep was coming..but they couldn’t stop it….in the ‘90s every opposing defense knew Emmitt was getting the ball and on 3rd down Aikman was going to hit Irvin on a skinny post…but they couldn’t stop it.
Catch my drift?

i guess the question then
becomes what can we do to improve? how do you improve focus? some think it’s up to coaches, others pin it on the players. hard to say… it’s probably both. does all the outside stuff with pac and TO etc. contribute to loss of focus? that’s what the media says. i don’t buy that it’s the biggest issue.
then if you struggle with focus and you know you can’t be consistent, then you can at least try to get better play calling, etc. to give yourself a better chance. JG hasn’t helped us out too much in that department.
I think both players and coaches have to be accountable. where you see weakness, gotta cut ties and move on or shore those weaknesses up as best as possible. things could click for our team at any point so i’m holding out hope it’ll be this coming week and the weeks to come!

I respectfully don't agree with you Terry because....
I believe coaches can improve focus, and you know why? because if a player is threatened with his job, he either performs or is cut/replaced. That is what I loved the most about Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells- They did not give a hoot about a players mystique or reputation- they only had expectations and wanted results. If you couldn’t do the job, then they would look for someone that would get the job done, because all that mattered was getting the job done- pretty or not. Style points don’t win football games, players that fight hard and work on getting better all the time and improving will.
Wade Phillips won’t deserve to loose his job because he has one hand tied behind his back. Does Wade Have any say in what play is called by the offense? But ultimately, the head coach is responsible for everything that happens on the defense AND the offense. This is why in reality, Garrett must go. he sucks, plain and simple. He has no experience in making a defense respect an offense, and thus puts the cowboys offense at a disadvanntage before a play is even run. What does Garrett think, that opposing defenses just have no clue or talent to stop what he as an OC is headstrong and stubborn about when it comes to calling a play? He is wrong, dead wrong. After Tashard Choice had a respectable gain on the ground against the Ravens and picked up a first down, why would you EVER go to a shotgun? Some people say it was to give Romo more time- hogwash!
Look at what the Giants do (simply)- after a nice gain on the ground, Eli goes up to the line of scrimmage, takes the snap, and Wah-Lah…. a pass completion for 13 yards! Why? because by coming up to the line, you make the defense respect your running game! Every fan even knows that you can pass easier when a team fears your run. That is why I would even say that “RedBall” doesn’t work, and I will even say he doesn’t run/pass the ball to Tashard enough. Some people (like me) might even tell “Redball” that Marion Barber isn’t the kind of everydown back we need, Tashard is. What I wouldn’t give to call back about 5 passing plays against the Ravens and disguise a few pass/run plays to Tashard instead.
When I saw that shotgun formation, I was naturally compelled to say to myself “this offensive coordinator doesn’t know what he is doing….”
Those of us who are fans blaming Romo for this kind of offensive playcalling should remember it is Garrett who calls the plays, not Wade or Romo.

Why we expect players
who get paid millions win or lose to focus and/or motivate themselves is beyond me.
A player cannot and will not generate the proper focus if they are not motivated to do so, plain and simple. It takes effort—a lot of it—to maintain the proper focus throughout a 5 month-long season.
90% of humans whose needs are already met will become lazy; our core motivation comes from the drive to satisfy our needs. With today’s players getting paid millions up front, I can’t imagine too many of their needs being unfulfilled.
This is why I think it’s extremely important to have a really good coach, who’s primary strength is motivation. X’s and O’s will take care of themselves, because as many have already said, it’s really about the execution in the end. A play that’s executed to near perfection will work more often than not, whether it’s a simple HB dive to the A gap or a double-reverse WR pass.
But execution requires focus.
In my opinion, coaches can and do improve focus through motivation. This doesn’t mean he has to be a hard-ass disciplinarian, either. It just means they generate that “I’d run through a wall for that guy” mentality in their players. I don’t know what it is, or how it’s achieved (there appear to be many ways to do so), but it’s just one of those things that you know when you see it.
Unfortunately, Wade just doesn’t engender that “run through a wall” mentality amongst his players. In fairness to Wade, there aren’t many coaches that do. Do they like Wade? Sure, it appears so. But would they run through a wall for him? I highly doubt it.

I will no longer be a fan of the Cowboys if Garrett is ever named head coach....period..
Jerry would loose the 20 years of atta boys i’ve been tossing his way…and I’d ban watching the team in protest…..but trust me….Garrett will NEVER be the HC of this team……BANK ON IT…. Jerry may be stubborn……but he ain’t stupid…..He knows Garrett has been a failure, and is the key reason why the chemistry is off with this team…….Garrett will not be here much longer….believe that..

Now that's the sign of a true fan
I’ll be a Cowboys fan no matter who plays for them and no matter who is their coach.
So let me get this right, Jerry brings in ex-criminals to play and you’re cool with that. But if Garrett is head coach you won’t be a fan anymore? Interesting.

Jason is learning on the job, I think he can do a better job, but he definitely is not as bad you think he is..
This Philly game will be a telling game, but at the same time you can’t blame him for the Romo injury.. Romo’s healthy all season, I don’t think you have as many complaints, not his fault Romo is still healing..

Part of the Problem?
It’s not being “Part of the problem” if you see the problem and acknowledge it as the problem. Don’t just sweep it under the carpet. All we can hope for is better use of our talent on offense. it’s bad enough that “Redball” has gotten the “Genius” label because of that talent, but all Garrett has shown is that even though you have “all that talent”, it amounts to beans if you don’t know what to do with it.

maybe 20,000 miles away you don’t quite have a grasp on how plays are to be called….IT WAS a KNOWN fact the Sparano was the RUNNING OC…and Garrett was drawing up PASSING plays in the sand…It was Sparano on the sidelines calling in the plays…Garrett in the booth throwing in his two cents……….It was easier for Jerry to pay to keep Garrett here because of his familiarity with the team….simple as that…

You're overlooking a big fact
Jerry called in a favor with Huizenga just to get Garrett as an OC, then gave him 3 mil to stay after last season’s success on offense (which was much more due to passing than running). This is clearly the guy Jerry wants to remain OC and eventually take over as HC.
Tony Soprano is merely a BP puppet who has followed Tuna from Jersey to Dallas and now to Miami. The guy had never even been a HC at the college level ( I think) until he took the Miami job.
You might as well face the fact that Garrett will be here for awhile, and hopefully you are wrong about him. I still like him and think he’ll be very successful in the long run.

Here is Sparano’s background:
New Haven (OL coach)
Boston University (OL coach)
Boston University (OC)
New Haven (HC)
Cleveland Browns
(Offensive Quality Control Coach)
Cleveland Browns (OL coach)
Washington Redskins (TEs coach)
Jacksonville Jaguars (TEs coach)
Dallas Cowboys (OL/Assist. HC)
Miami Dolphins (head coach)
He never worked for Parcells until he was in Dallas. MY cousin played for him at BU and said he was destined to coach in the NFL one day.

Injuries
You are over looking the injuries. Before Romo got hurt we averaged 29.16 points a game, which would be leading the league right now.. We haven’t been the same offense since the Romo injury. I still wonder how that hand feels, he just hasn’t been the same since the injury. Now you have to factor in the back injury, the guy is solider..

I think the coaching staff needs another year.
We’re too quick to give up on coaches and players. When management moves things around too much during the offseason, it can affect the future of the team.
Wade is fine. Garrett has some flaws, but he’s a young coach. He will learn on the way.

Coach Phillips
Why is the media so intent on writing that Coach Phillips will be gone if they don’t win the next game & at least one playoff game? Heck, JJT wrote two articles, before the season even started, speculating that Coach will be gone even if they won the Superbowl.
If you ask me, Coach Phillips has the defense playing better than the boy’s have played since the doomsday days of the 70’s. I think they are playing better, when everyone is healthy, than the great teams of the 90’s and back then I thought Charles Hailey was the best pass rusher in the game.
Who in the world could Jerry get that would be a better head coach than Phillips? Some might say Cower & I think he is a very good coach, but without bringing Dick Lebou with him, I think our defense would take a huge step backwards.
I don’t know why true cowboys fans are so down on Tony Romo right now. Personally, I think he is one of the top 3 qb’s in the game. When Tony has been healthy and his game not real good, I think can be directly linked to the offensive line. I think Kosier being out has hurt the offense much more than anyone would have ever thought. The line was especially bad when Flozell was hurt along with Kosier being out.
All & all, I am rooting for the cowboys to win the upcoming game & go a long ways in the playoffs. I can’t wait until the newspapers in this country go the way horses & buggies went. The next thing after that would be seeing ESPN go down the drain.
For true cowboy fans, you can not get any better information & analysis than this blog right here.

Wade deserves to stay......unless
you can give me a better alternative,,,,,,,Jerry is not bringing in a high profile coach because he would have to share power again and I’m not sure Jerry is ready to do that yet……So what puppet out there will bring more to the table than what Wade brings? Wade at least will have a very good Defense and he doesn’t have an ego problem so he is a perfect fit at Valley Ranch….,… Moving Garrett to HC will open up a hole on Defense so I like Wade as HC who will take over the Defense and have them playing at a high level. Don’t be surprised if crazy Martz and his greatest show on turf comes to Valley Ranch as OC when Jerry opens up the new stadium……..Jerry loves scoring…….IMO Wade stays until we are a 8-8 team again, then all bets are off……
