Stanback goes on IR
WR Isaiah Stanback can go ahead and schedule the operation he needs on his shoulder. He was placed on injured reserve today.
TE Rodney Hannah was promoted off the practice squad to take Stanback's place on the 53-man roster. But that shouldn't be taken as a sign that Jason Witten's status for the regular season finale is in doubt.
Witten (ankle) is listed as probable. He will play. The question is whether he'll be effective.
OG Montrae Holland (ankle) is out. RB Marion Barber (toe) is questionable.
http://cowboysblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/12/isaiah-stanbacks-season-is-over.html
The one good thing for me about this move is that Dallas got Hannah signed to the 53 man roster. I think some teams might of been sniffing around trying to sign him off of our practice roster. I really like him and I think he'll take Tony Curtis spot next year on the roster.
Stanback cant seem to stay healthy enough to contribute, this year he'll need offseason surgery and unless he really steps up in training camp next year, he will be gone if dallas drafts another receiver next spring, which I think is a strong possibility. I don't see Hurd being brought back next year.
Montrae Holland is going to be out again, another Cory Proctor sighting, god help us!!! In next years draft, I better see a guard/center drafted, get Proctor off of this roster.....
If Barber can't give more than what he's shown the last two weeks, deactivate him for Sunday's game

I like Hannah
I think the Cowboys made this move just in case Witten has any set backs or gets re-injured to the point he can’t play.
Both Bennett and Hannah are both excellent receiving TEs.
BTW, this team has many more pressing needs than WR, they actually have too many IMO.
I hope we don’t draft any WRs but rather focus on S, OL, DL and LB in next year’s draft.

This team has a need for another speed receiver on the outside
Austin is another guy that cant seem to stay healthy
We’ll still have 8 picks and 2 compensatory picks in next years draft, plenty to address posiitons.

I'll take
A WR who starts out as the primary kick and punt returner..

We've already got two very good returners in Felix Jones and Pacman

I hear u2
But Felix is just too dangerous and explosive on KO returns to NOT play him there. You just have to chance the injuries and try to get some other, better, special teams guys to block for him (ILB types, which we need to draft anyway).

most pressing need
Is safety, anyone have any quality names at safety coming out this year?

I like that kid from Oregon
I think his name is Patrick Chung. He should be available in the 2nd rd when we pick.
The top 3 safety prospects, William Moore from Missouri, Rashad Johnson from Alabama and Louis Delmas from W Michigan will all probably be drafted before we pick.

nice.
I like the size William Moore, the speed of Rashad Johnson, and Louis Delmas could be the best value with him currently projected in the 3-4 round. We need another scandrick, a solid player, over looked because he didn’t go to a major college, and didn’t interview well at the combine..

William Moore-Missou, Taylor Mays-USC, Myron Rolle-FSU, Mike Hamlin-Clem, Pat Chung-Oregon, R Johnson-Bama, L Delmas are day 1 draft prospects..
At least one will be available at our first selection..

actually we will have 11 picks
yeah, another speed WR would help. TO’s days are short here and as much as I love Austin we need another speed WR for the future. I’m not saying we need to draft a 1st or even a second rounder, but maybe find a good 3rd or 4th round guy to develop.

as our 5th-6th WR ???....I don't think so...not using a top 4 pick on WR with much more pressing needs.

Rodney Hannah can catch
but he can’t block a lick. Tony Curtis may be replaced, but I’m not bullish on Hannah to do it.
by Rafael Vela on Dec 26, 2008 4:24 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Rodney Hannah was very raw when Dallas signed him
A former basketball player. He has shown great strides in the last two years here. I agree, when he got here he was not great at blocking, but you can teach blocking technique, you can’t teach talent.
Jason Witten wasn’t the greatest blocker at Tennessee or when he first got here either… There is just more upside with Hannah than there is with Curtis

what does deactivating barber do exactly?
Mandatory reading before suggesting a trade
by ab03 on Dec 26, 2008 4:34 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
you can only activate 45 players on gameday
having a guy that’s injured and can’t contribute decreases that number to 44 players. Better do deactivate him for the game and activate another running back to backup Choice
by Deke on Dec 26, 2008 4:45 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I say,,,,,
Cut Stanback at the end of the season…….Move Felix to punt and kick off returner…….also give Felix 5-6 touches on the O side of the ball by putting him in the slot, out wide and in the back field, he could also be used as our 4th or 5th wide out in those situations so we only have to take 4 WR to the game. Choice has earned half of Barbers carries and move Barber back to sharing carries like he did with Julius, were Choice starts and Barber is brought in around the goal line and in the 4th quarter using the running back by committee aproach. Run the ball about 30 -35 times a game barber with 12-15 carries, Choice 12-15 carries and Felix the balance.
by jvw on Dec 26, 2008 5:45 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
While I dont disagree that its a good idea...
I just dont see any way that they are going to basically split the carries between MB3 and TC. Barber is making too much to justify him only touching the ball inside the 20 and in the 4th quarter. I think he’s got to have an average of 20 carries a game. I realize you want to keep him fresh throughout the season as much as possible. But you have to get your money’s worth out of him too.
by WB3forMB3 on Dec 26, 2008 6:42 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You are Probably right and that's
what the problem is………You either do what needs to be done on the football field to win games or you make decision based on what round you were drafted or how much money you make……..When decisions are being made based on anything other than whats best for the team, your limiting your chance to win…….this is one area were the Tuna has it right….
by jvw on Dec 26, 2008 6:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No reason to cut him in the offseason. They get paid for games on roster and lacks a mid-year roster bonus and roster sizes go back to 70 somthing. This year Stanback got a pass because of his future potential. Next year is year three for him and there are clearly four WR who are taking roster spots. This time around he will not be given anything that he does not earn in camp and pre-season.
I think everyone agrees with more touches for Felix . I would like to see him get 8-10 a game. Heck give all three of them 8-12 touches and make teams stop our runing game and short passing game all while defending Owens, a intergrated Williams and Witten down field.
That said, I like his as a kickoff returner, but am less sure about him returning punts
by Trey, on Dec 26, 2008 8:02 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
IMHO Pacman is still our best Punt Returner

F.Jones
I don’t disagree that he should be both the PR & KR, but I think you have quickly forgot how good he was running the ball. He should be the one splitting with Barber not Choice. I’m not discounting how well Choice has been, but Felix is just that good.

I've been saying it for awhile now...Stanback was a waste of a pick....
I thought maybe he would make it another season, but he could be let go on a injury settlement during the offseason. He will be nothing more than the 5th or 6th Wr on this team and won’t be active most weeks. This year was no different.
by Boyzfan94 on Dec 27, 2008 9:03 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
he wasn't a wasted pick
He still has a chance to be great but he has to stay healthy and thats his problem right now.
Barbie Carpenter was a wasted pick…no heart.

Stanbach is injury prone and will be nothing more than a 4th or 5th wr on this team
At least Carpenter is a solid special teams contributor and a good backup LB.
by Boyzfan94 on Dec 28, 2008 2:02 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
good back-up?
Yeah right, Bobby carp not sure the last time I saw him make a tackle on special teams, but who cares, no reason to argue about guys at the bottom of the roster.
I wouldn’t be upset in the least if we decided to try to upgrade those roster spots. I know Carp needs a fresh start and Jerry loved Stanback at the beginning of the season.

Carp is one of the best special teams players we have
He hasn’t had much of chance to show what he can do at LB, but when given the opportunity he has played well. He may need a fresh start somewhere else like you suggest because he may not get it here. It should be interesting because, I don’t think Zach will be on this team next year and they need to make a decision on Burnett also.
by Boyzfan94 on Dec 28, 2008 11:06 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think dallas resigns canty, Tank is out of here
but I think Burnett wants a chance to start and he’ll get a better contract from another team, so I dont think he’ll be here next year..
by Deke on Dec 28, 2008 11:35 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree on both
I think Burnett and Tank are gone, they can go some where else and get paid and start.
I wouldn’t mind letting Burnett go if we can sign Bart Scott or Channing Crowder.

+1 Terry....Stanback WILL be on this roster next season...Barbie Friggin' Carpenter ????
last year was a red shirt…this year he held off surgery because of team need ,(due to injuries to Hurd & Austin, both RFA , btw) ….this nonsense that he was a wasted pick is down right absurd….Stanback showed me more signs of greatness in his limited play than Austin and Hurd combined in over three years on this roster….Stanback will be given another chance to contend as our 4th-5th WR…..count on it….
As far Boyzfan’s outrageous love affair with Barbie Carpenter, THE WORST PICK IN THE HISTORY OF THE DALLAS COWBOYS…..is down right lunacy, and I highly doubt Carpenter will even make it to the end of his contract here

Get the surgery and forget wearing a harness or brace to hold the shoulder in the glenoid (socket)… he might have been more useful

We can find a guy in the draft with more WR abilties and with the same speed to be the 5th or 6th Wr on this team. I don’t see how he makes the opening day roster. He is too injury prone…..

Hannah looked really good in the preseason
And he’s quite a physical, athletic specimen with great hands…a former basketball player.
And as sad as Stanback’s shoulder situation has been this season, I still give him hats off for doing his best to play through the lingering injury and give it his best shot to contribute and help the team. He’s shown toughness this year and deserves some kudos, as well, for his efforts.
