Couple questions for Cowboys
First, regarding the offensive line, how is it doing? I heard earlier when you guys were in that mild Romoless slump that the O-Line was a team weakness. Of course, I am from Pittsburgh so all I got was the national scuttlebut and not any of your local scoop. Curious. Our line was horrible earlier and now it seems to have improved as the season wears on, but we shall see.
Second, has Ware or Barber practiced? Mike Tomlin seems to think they are playing for sure, or at least he is preparing for such. That doctor interview you had was outstanding. What is the latest?
PS, I wrote an historical piece on our website featuring the Steelers-Cowboys rivalry. Of course, it is slanted from a Pittsburgh view, but I think you might enjoy.

The o-line is fine. The backup QB, not so much.
Second, they haven’t practiced, but it looks like they will play.
Last, great job on the article. I thought it was generally balanced and touted the grandeur of the rivalry more than either team. Nicely done.

My take
The O line has been inconsistent this year — no denying that. It’s had its best games when Kyle Kosier has been in the lineup at LG. However, he is currently on IR, and his replacement for much of the season, Cory Proctor, has been fairly ineffective.
On the bright side, the last game against the Seahawks debuted Montrae Holland, who seems to be a huge upgrade over Proctor. You can read Grizz’s report on him on the main page here. Grizz also has a good report on how the Steelers might be able to disrupt our line.
Another important factor in the O line’s performance this year is the health and play of Romo. When he’s on, he makes the line look just that much better. I hope to see Romo and the line keep the mojo going against a drastically better defense than they have faced recently.
Ware and Barber
Both are absolute beasts. Both are hurt. Both are absolute warriors. Therefore, both will likely get on the field. Unfortunately, as of right now, I don’t know if we will see them at their dominating best on Sunday. This is an issue, especially regarding Ware, who was a good bet for a couple of sacks this Sunday. From Wade Phillips’ press conference, it seems we will know more on Friday.

Excellent History Lesson
I crave football history, and you did a fantastic job summarizing the rich history between these two great franchises. I still remember the 1972 game in Texas Stadium, when the Steelers were just starting their rise to greatness. Dallas was the defending Super Bowl champs, and the Steelers were coming off a mediocre year, but the Steelers fought very hard and actually had a chance to win it at the end. The rest was history.
So, anyway, to answer your questions…
The offensive line is doing better, but is not as solid as last year. Our best lineman has been Marc Colombo. Montrae Holland played pretty well at left guard last week against a smallish Seattle line. This week will be a serious test for him. The other linemen, Adams, Gurode and Davis, are playing well but not as well as last year.
I don’t believe either Barber or Ware practiced this week; neither practiced today. I wouldn’t assume both will play, although if there were serious concerns about Barber’s ability to play, I would have thought they would have added a running back to the roster, but they did not.
One of my favorite players, although I don’t get to see him much, is Troy Polamalu. How has he played this year?
by kindablue on Dec 3, 2008 6:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Troy is having a Pro Bowl season
No doubt. There have been times in the past where he may have made the pro Bowl on reputation. This year he is healthy and wreaking havoc. He has six picks already, for a safety, not bad at all.

Troy Polamalu will be regarded as the greatest safety to ever play the game. He’s just one of those players like Jerry Rice or Lawrence Taylor who redefine their positions.

I would take Troy P over Bob
Bob Sanders in the last 3 seasons has played 24 out 44 games, he basically misses a 1/2 season every year.. In his 1st 5 seasons 43 out 76, Wow..
Troy has been money in coverage this year..

Career interceptions for Bob Sanders: 5
Career interceptions for Troy Polamalu: 16
Am I missing something? Hmmm… Maybe interceptions are overrated?

INTs have nothing to do with DBs ability to cover
it just means he has a nose for the ball, like Henry, but you see him get beat like a drum a lot.
Believe, Troy is weak in deep coverage.

I'd nominate Ed Reed
of the Ravens as the best safety in the league.
The Red Ball Express will be rolling this year!
by BulletBob on Dec 4, 2008 1:29 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
No question
Ed Reed is the most complete and dominant safety in the NFL.
Sanders gets too banged up and misses too many games to be the best.
Troy P is more like a free lance player which can lead to big plays or big misses.

He's a typical USC defensive player.
All of the athletic ability in the world. No instincts. No REAL football knowledge. Leads to making a lot of plays, but also a lot of inconsistency. See Rey Maualuga

Pete Carroll era USC defensive players. He scouts on pure athleticism.
by Mandmeisterx on Dec 4, 2008 3:52 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Oh i get u
I think lack of competition may hurt some of their players, because they come out college overly confident.. They are more talented then the guy they lineup against 99% of the time.. In the SEC that is not the case..
We are seeing it in there big time WR’s. Mike Williams, dwayne jarrett.. Even Matt Lienart has been a victim..
With that said Rivers and Ellis look like they will be good pro’s
I think lofa tatupu is a player who isn’t overly athletic, but a gets it done by instincts..

I've said this before
He’s somewhat overrated. He has incredible energy, but he still whiffs on plays.
What sets players like Polamalu and Sanders apart is their tenacity and leadership, but it doesn’t make them the BEST at their position. For a more complete safety that’s often gone overlooked, look at Ed Reed.

Our OLine is one of the most overrated units in the league.
Some here will disagree with me, but they are considered one of the best, had 3 pro Bowlers lasy year, when in truth they are a maybe slightly above-average unit.
Run-blocking-while on some plays they will plow a huge hole, and they do very well in short yardage, there are so many times that Barber makes them look better by escaping a hit from some guy coming free and making a gain out of nothing. Poor Julius Jones, a decent NFL back, couldn’t do anything last year because he was constantly stuffed behind the line.
Penalties-prob. one of the most-penalized OLines in the league.
Pass-blocking-Better than run-blocking, but throw a combination of speed with stunts/disguised blitzes at them and you’ll find openings. Like w/Barber, Romo makes them look better than they are w/amazing escapability. If you haven’t seen him much (I hate the Steelers so why would watch them?!? You prob. only watch the Boys to root against them!) you will be amazed at how he senses the pressure and can get out of trouble. Even the best players have trouble getting him. With a slick surface your guys may have trouble getting him down. He’s 6’2’’, 220+, bigger and more athletic than the baby face would make you think.
The other side of that is he gets out of sacks 2-3 times a game by throwing the ball away. With the Steelers secondary that will be a huge mistake.
If Rothslbrgr played behind this line, his sacks would be less, but he’d probably have 20 or so.
Our OLine: Overall, a “B-” unit, run-blocking C+, pass-blocking “B”
by Realist Larry on Dec 3, 2008 9:43 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I think part of the problem was that our left side was banged up
and that is not just Kosier being replaced by Procter. People forget that Flo has had a nagging stinger for a bunch of weeks, but I think it has gotten better. And with Montrae Holland replacing Procter the left side of our o-line is much better than it was earlier.
I would bump up those grades to a B+ for Pass blocking and a B- for run blocking.
by quincyyyyy on Dec 3, 2008 11:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but I'm going back to last year, too.
It’s just what I honestly see out there, a “B” isn’t bad, but some people act like we have a great line.
And, I think this is a good matchup in Pitt’s favor.
by Realist Larry on Dec 3, 2008 11:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I think we match up well to Casey Hampton because of the size of our o-line
but Woodley and Harrison are matchup problems for us. Tellus is going to need to spend a lot of time helping Flo out. Moreover, I’m not too worried about any exotic blitzes they may throw at us. Barber and Choice are good a picking up the blitz, especially Barber.

People fret over the fact that MB3 and Ware are not practicising till Friday
but that doesn’t mean anything at all. I’m sure the ideal situation for Wade would for them not to practice at all until Sunday. They are hard working veterans; they don’t really need to practice. They just need time to heal, but it seems he is using Friday to judge where they are at and if everything is working properly.

Think of another inter-conference rivalry that approaches this one?
by gee-roj on Dec 4, 2008 7:21 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
regions
There are some regional rivalries that exist but nothing close. For instance NYJ/NYG and to a lesser extent SF/Oak. Maybe Baltimore/DC might become a inter-conference rivalry one of these days. Houston vs. Dallas has some good rivalry juices from Houston fans, but since Dallas is everyone’s rival, Cowboys fans don’t take it as seriously as the Texans/Oilers fans do.

Close but no cigar
I think all of those mentioned are rivalries but none of them have had both teams excel at the same time. The mid-70s shows Dallas being a powerhouse and Pittsburgh winning 4 Super Bowls, playing each other in 2 of them.
As for inter-conference rivalries, I think this one’s it.

Good article
I would have enjoyed more regular season commentary. Like how Roger Staubach not only was 0-2 in Super Bowls against Pittsburgh, but how his Cowboys lost to the Steelers also in 1977 and 1979. In the latter Steeler win, Staubach suffered a major concussion that, as I understand it, contributed greatly to his decision to retire (some say prematurely).
As a youngster, I recall great games between the Cowboys/Steelers in 1982 (MNF) and 1985 (Dorsett goes over 10,000 yards), and who can forget the Thanksgiving Day game in 1991, when Michael Irvin shrugged off Rod Woodson on a 66-yard catch and run TD. I’d also note how the last two times the Cowboys played in Pittsburgh, they absolutely trounced excellent Steeler teams. But alas, that was a long time ago. This Sunday’s matchup has the makings of another classic game.
