The Silly Season Begins: Garrett Interests Detroit & Maybe Cleveland

Dallas OC Jason Garrett was granted permission to speak to the Detroit Lions about their head coaching vacancy.  Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo and Titans DC Jim Schwartz are also top candidates for the job, though they cannot yet interview with the Lions.  Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray will also interview for the job.

-- If the Lions want Spagnuolo, they will have to outbid the Jets and the Browns, who are also very interested in him.

-- Garrett is also a possible candidate for the Cleveland Browns, though owner Randy Lerner is focused on landing a GM, after Bill Cowher turned him down.  Patriots personnel honcho Scott Pioli is the hot name here.

-- The Rams interviewed Packers assistant Winston Moss today and will also interview Vikings DC Leslie Frazier and Ravens DC Rex Ryan, when they become available.  They have already ruled out Spagnuolo and Patriots OC Josh McDaniel, claiming they are too expensive.

I can see avoiding the really big money

These guys are hot commodities but they’ve never been HC before.

Point taken..

Might be able to find a Mike Tomlin by interviewing the right guys.

Any thoughts on where Cassel lands?

I think Cassell will go wherever McDaniel goes. Which might be the same place as Pioli

Jets have Tannenbaum as their GM and he's not going anywhere

so Pioli isn’t going to the Jets…

Jets are going after Cowher hard, if they don’t get him, I could see Gruden if he’s let go in Tampa or Marty Schottemheimer…

Pioli and McDaniel take the Cleveland Job and work with Quinn or D. Anderson.. They can get something for either one and start competing.

He’s been overrated from the start by everyone. Sparano was never fully appreciated during his time here. I know they’ve said no, but maybe SD will fire Norv and he can return home where he belongs. If Norv can’t get Romo tamed then no one will

Slide

A new OC might make a difference, but this team needs to rebuild its O-line if it wants to be an elite team. I’ll post a longer piece on this soon, maybe later Tuesday.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 30, 2008 1:15 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Can't rebuild the O-line.....

Were locked into all except for Kosier and he isn’t the problem. We would take a huge hit if we cut any of these players…Flozell maybe the only player we can unload without taking a huge hit, but it wouldn’t be cheap regardless.

by Boyzfan94 on Dec 30, 2008 10:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So you settle for good but not great?

Would Dallas pass on another Larry Allen/Ron Stone caliber guy because they’re locked in?

Besides, there’s age there. Flo is old. This team needs depth too. They should find a C/G to replace Proctor and an OT backup to replace McQuistan, and hope that one or both are good enough to challenge the starters soon.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 30, 2008 10:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree w/ Boyzfan

I would love to be able to replace some of the meatheads on our O-line, but we are pretty much locked into those contracts across the board (w/ the exception of Kosier). That being said I would love to be able to replace Kosier w/ a possibly great OG like Duke Robinson, but as Boyzfan said it wasn’t like Kosier was the big problem this year.

Another thing that concerns me is that if we’re looking to replace Flo we might not be picking in the right spot. Most quality starting tackles (especially LT’s) go in the first round and w/ the bust rate we’ve been getting out of our o-line picks the last few years I’m very reluctant to pick a position that is historically difficult to find outside of having a first rounder. If we go o-line I’m hoping for a guard.

by boysinyabelly on Dec 30, 2008 12:48 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

People say the loss of Kosier wasn't the problem, yet with him in there, the O Line rocked...

The problem with our O Line is that there are no individual standouts, sure you can say we have/had 3 Pro Bowlers, but tha…Flo plays better when he has decent/great players NEXT to him,(Larry Allen, Kyle Kosier)….but if he must take on more responsibility because of the lack of talent next to him (Proctor, McQuistan) he becomes mediocre……same can be said for Gurode, as he didn’t become the pro bowl type player he is perceived to be now until Bigg Davis lined up next to him…same can be said about Davis and Columbo too……..each played off each other, each are better with good talent next to them, and none are great when talent is taken away from them…….I’m not a big fan of Kosier’s, but this season truely showed me how just being a decent OL can go along way to keeping the unit strong and consistant……….IF we were going to grab ANY free agent at all this offseason, Left OG- Mike Goff of San Diego would be my prime target….He has been healthy his whole career, doesn’t miss games, relatively young for the position, and has been blowing open holes for LT for many years now…….Goff would make Flo better, make Gurode better, and would lock this O Line up for many years to come……..Kosier has one year left on his contract, and Holland would make for GREAT depth at both OG positions, and can/have played OT in a pinch….IT is our biggest position of NEED….as none of our current reserves Free, Marten, McQuistan, Proctor, and Berger have shown what it takes to belong in a starting lineup..By signing Goff…..we would not have to dedicate our first overall pick (48-52) to an OL, as nobody selected there would be close to helping us immediately, or in the near future…That being said, and the probability of losing DL, LB’s, and Safety depth real soon…We can focus in on getting the very best available at those positions…I am not opposed to selecting an OL in the 2nd round…IF one of the higher rated linemen should fall to us…then we go for it…but we go out and sign a solid, NFL ready and proven guy like Mike Goff, It completely solidifies our starting unit, AND gives us proven depth with Kosier, Holland, and probably Doug Free…IF Chris Canty is lost to Free Agency, It brings a ripple effect to the rest of the DL, Spears will be in his final year, and Hatcher hasn’t proven he’s ready to be a 3 down player, and moving Ratliff outside without a top notch NT would be a mistake…….There are no 3-4 DE’s available in this years draft with starter potential besides T Jackson from LSU, and he’ll go in round 1. Although Canty’s play wasn’t awe inspiring this season, we are almost compelled to make him a really good contract offer to stay……

I’d say the Jets or the Browns. Though if Pioli goes to Cleveland, he’s already got Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. Cassell won’t follow, even if McDaniel does.

Are good jobs, they have some really nice pieces in place.

Cleveland needs a RB, and some DB’s- RB’s are relatively easy to find.

NYJ needs a QB and WR’s-Cassel solves the QB

I can't see the Charger firing Norv

He had to overcome Hochuli’s messup, fired his DC in midseason, got the ship righted with a declining LaDainian Tomlinson.

Smith is not a knee jerk GM. He’s keeping Norv. If they get past the Colts, which is very possible, then who scares them? The AFC has a lot of nasty defenses and so-so offenses. Norv may have the hottest QB left if he and Philip Rivers get past Peyton Manning.

I'll make one early prediction

if Garrett leaves, he’ll take his brother with him. I HOPE he takes Hud with him too.

If Garrett picks some offensive assistants, Wade gets another shot at remaking his offense.

I’ll bet Al Saunders is a guy he recommends. Saunders was the OC for the Rams last year. They didn’t do much, but they had no offensive line talent. Wade I’m sure remembers that awesome Chiefs offense Saunders ran for Dick Vermeil at Kansas City. It was #1 what, four years in a row?

If that happens, then Wade gets another shot at hiring Mike Solari as his OL coach. Solari was the OL coach for Vermeil and Saunders at K.C. Ask Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson about the lines they built for him.

Jerry interviewed Saunders back when he hired Dave Campo to be HC. He knows the guy. His system is a more sophisticated version of the offense Norv Turner and Mike Martz run. It suits the talent already in Dallas.

by Rafael Vela on Dec 30, 2008 1:29 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

My worry about a Saunders offense

is that it’s too complicated for the players to master in the short-term. Granted, it may be just an expansion of the vanilla garbage Garrett has given us the past 24 games. If that’s the base, then I think he’s a fine hire. Saunders isn’t afraid to motion his receivers or run them shallow across the middle, at least.

A really awesome opportunity existed with Cam Cameron being available last year, and it was wasted.

by Urinal Mint on Dec 30, 2008 8:07 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Name me one fan, pundit or anybody

who saw last year as an “opportunity.” Jerry was frantic to keep him from leaving to Baltimore and so was everybody else. The irony is, had Garrett taken that job, Cameron might well have come.

+1 Glory....I'm on my knees praying Detroit gets "hoodwinked" (like Jerry did) by Garrett's Ivy League jargan and persona of being "boy genius"

This would be the best case scenario, I’m begging for the removal of this tool Garrett……..as Romo & TO “have already called out” Garrett’s lack of play calling abilities, and I’m sure the same feeling is felt throughout the locker room….

Raf’s made some good predictions…Al Saunders would work wonders here, and has long been considered one of the best OC’s in the business, and bringing along a new OL coach in Mike Solari would solidify this OL to become more of a power running team, with the abilities of our 3 RBacks…

I doubt highly Ray Sherman(WR coach), or Skip Peete(RB coach) would go with Garrett, and I’d like to keep those two guys here as well……..

Let Garrett take his brothers, and maybe hire his dad as player personel director, and send him off to Detroit….PLEASE…………… WILLIAM CLAY FORD…..PLEASE DO US THIS FAVOR !!!

Jason Garrett

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.. Everyone wanted Parcell’s gone, no we have Wade. Don’t be so sure that the offense will be better without Jason, especially not the following the season. That is the continuity jerry is talking about. If we have to learn a brand new offense, it may take us a whole season to get it down. Then what? Can you handle another season of the offense looking lost? Jason is very intelligent guy, learning on the job, I think he can adjust and learn his mistake this off-season. This is a league full of experienced coaches; did we really think a guy who has never called plays before is going to always be one step ahead of veterans like Rex Ryan, Jim Johnson, and Dick Lebeau? Every coach has been out-smarted in this league, how do you learn from it, if you have never seen it? We faced 4 out of the top defenses in the last week. That will give Garrett all the film he needs to prepare for next season. Baltimore, Pitt, NYG, and Philly- he will learn from those mistakes and we will never look back. I really don’t want to the offense to have to learn a brand new scheme. Jason Garrett will learn, I have faith, the guy is just to intelligent. I do think he needs a experienced position coach under him who can help him game plan like Spranao did..

I disagree, I think we had a quality scheme going all last year and going in to this year, and other teams caught up. Happens all of the time, in professional sports. I think we could have been a lot better, but we weren’t. I also think we will be a lot better next year, Garrett is learning, and he was taught a very hard lesson.. Always stay ahead of the game..

It was no accident we dropped 41 on Philly week 2. Where you complaining then? I doubt it. The difficulty of the NFL is what makes us so such passionate fans..

Romo said teams caught up, I believe him. Next year we have to stay head of the game.

The Skins obviously missed Saunders this year. Those guys should be able to take this Volkswagon offense with Porsche parts and turn it back into a Porsche. Oh, how the mighty have fallen..

Just a few short months ago, Garrett was a genius…now?…not so much. I’m not so sure he was as brilliant as he was formerly touted to be, nor is he as dull as he is being labeled now. I won’t be broken hearted if he stays because I think he will be a better OC next year.

He will see what the DCs around the league used against him and the next chess move to counter is his. His last three or four opponents were among the best defenses in the league, meaning that they usually spanked everyone.

His weapons were depleted. No Felix, no Kosier to unify the O-line, Barber is hobbling, Romo is wounded, Roy Williams has a bad foot (maybe explaining his poor routes), and Witten is held together with duct tape. We were a wounded animal. He has to improvise, adapt, overcome you say? OK, well easier to say than do.

As we continued to bleed out, our offense became more predictable and our opponents got stronger (ie top league defenses) I’m reminded of that Monty Python scene where the Black Knight has lost both arms and legs, blood squirting out through all of his wounds, and he is still threatening to bite his opponent if he gets close enough. That Black Knight had a star on his helmet.

I do think there is some good that comes with continuity, and as I said, I do believe Garrett will bounce back next year.

With that said, I won’t be broken hearted if he leaves. Maybe what we all need is a fresh start. I think Garrett would be best served in Detroit, where any improvement looks like a real good thing. Who ever we might get is going to inherit a real solid core group of players, hopefully healthy, and will probably enjoy the same type of first year success that JG did.

As for Romo…I think he is a winner. He had a horrible year with turnovers and in part, those turnovers were a result of the perfect storm of injuries and poor defensive play from the Cowboys. What did the guy do from the 13-3 year to this year that made him put the ball on the ground so much? Jessica Simpson? Please.

I’d say the same things that caused his hand to get broken and his ribs to get bruised and his back to get damaged were a big part of the turnovers. Protection, or lack thereof. It’s hard to be aware of the pocket when there is no pocket. If you have to throw the ball, it’s going to be exposed. Let’s get the guy some protection and see how he does. I’m betting he lights it up again.

My third point is.. if any of you here visit other teams sites to inject ‘helpful’ comments, such as the knucklehead from Baltimore… please stop. It’s childish. I hope that when the holiday season ends, and grade school starts back up, that Raven fan will be too busy coloring and practicing cursive writing to share his/her insights with us.

I agree

I think before we just get frustrated and throw everyone under the bus, it would be helpful to determine how good this team would be with all of its weapons healthy. 13-3 and 9-7 records would not get many coaches canned unless they coached for Al Davis.

Let’s face it. this team was not deep enough to lose the players it did at their respective positions. Look at the safety position (which wasn’t great to start with). By the time we played Philly, we had two on IR and the ones playing were on the injury report. Then on top of that, the Raiders beat Tampa Bay on the road no less! Are you serious? We caught the perfect storm guys, simple as that. Do we need some upgrades? Sure, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water. I say we need a better backup QB, depth on the OL, and upgrades at the safety position. Also, Santa could send me a big fat nose tackle if he were so inclined.

If Garrett leaves, how many OC will that mean Romo has been forced to learn under?

An Al Saunders system is very confusing. From what I understand he has the most extensive playbook in the entire NFL. You guys want to talk about learning curves?

I'm now wearing this signature in another forum that has nothing to do with the Cowboys

There are a ton of Cowboy haters over there even though it’s not even a football forum. I vowed to wear it until the Cowboys and Romo can win a playoff game, which could be a very, very long time. It’s a sad depiction, but I think it pretty much sums up the Boys and how they’ve played and how I feel when they do us fans the way they’ve done all season.

Here’s what I’d like to see: we get Cassel, assuming he’s not franchised. We trade Romo and Barber to Detroit for their first round picks. We can then use our first pick for some more trades.

I'm not laughing

If I could Cassel, I would get rid of Romo in a jiffy. This guy is going to continue making mental mistakes. He’s not going to improve. He may be able to complete a perfect 75 yard pass, but he’s to fumble or throw the interception that’s going to cost us the game. I was a big defender of him, but I’m through.

What has Romo done?

Absolutely nothing.
Cassel’s played excellent for guy who has never started a game in his life before this season. Romo has been average for a guy who’s played more than two seasons and has excellent weopons.
And his offensive line has stunk this season: he’s been sacked 47 times, versus 20 for Romo. He’s also more mobile than Brady. More mobile and atheletic than Romo.
Just look at Moss’s numbers this season. They’re worse than Owens’s.
I don’t want a flashy QB. I want a QB who makes little mistakes. Despite playing more games than Romo, he’s had less fumbles and interceptions. He’s good enough that the Patriots may consider franchising him.

300 lb lineman

That’s right, Terry. Despite being sacked 47 times and having 300 lb lineman come at him, he’s had less mistakes than Romo. Less mistakes in more games.

Palmer has put up good numbers, but where is he? Look at Roethlisberger—he just gets the job done. So does Eli. I remember Cowboy fans were saying how Giants fans are going to be screaming for him to get out by the fifth game this season. I’m still waiting for that.
Just get the job done and go home. I don’t care about style points.

I understand your frustration with Romo and production of this offense. BUT it is near impossible to compare Romo’s play to Cassell. You mentioned their sack totals but forgot that Romo was out for 3 games and played nearly half the season with a broken thumb and back contusion. How many sacks has Romo evaded in his career? He makes our line better than it is.
What’s great about Romo is his Athleticism (and trust me he is far more athletic across the board than Cassell) and Houdini mystic. But that is also what we Hate, because he turns the ball over at the most inopportune times.

Eli plays behind the best line in football. Dallas accounts for over half his sack totals and he played like crap when defenses did get pressure.

Roethlisberger – Is a younger version of Drew Bledsoe (Statue with a canon). He relies completely on his defense.

I wouldn’t trade Romo for any of the quarterbacks you compared him with. Despite playing in the toughest division and going up against the 4 toughest defenses these past four weeks, Romo is still in the Top of QB ratings.

Give Cassell another year before deciding that he’s the next John Elway.

Funny, how the Romo haters come out of the wood work when we don’t make the playoffs. Where were you guys last year? Where were you guys when Romo was out for three weeks and we were left with Brad FREAKING Johnson?

Romo’s our guy so we all need to Deal With It.

by Prime-Time on Dec 30, 2008 3:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well response indeed

It is refreshing to see a response that does not consist of attacks.
Firstly, I’m not saying that we should get Cassel. I’m just pointing out how well he’s done, especially in terms of avoiding mistakes.
In terms of avoiding sacks, I cannot speak of what didn’t happen and what I can’t back up through the numbers. I wonder how many sacks Cassel has avoided. I wonder how many sacks Brady has avoided by his quick decision making skills. Almost every QB has a way of avoiding a sack.
In addition, Romo has played in three less games but was sacked 27 less times. Would he be sacked 27 times in three games?
Romo broke his pinky in week six and came back in week 11. By week 12, his pinky was OK. In addition, he hurt his back in week 15. He was good enough to start in those games, and I’m not making any excuses.
Eli has also played and won against some tough times we’ve lost against, such as the Ravens and Steelers. He also played well against Arizona. If you are to use QB ratings as a metric, Eli has had better ratings than Romo in those games.
We all need to deal with Romo, but we don’t need to be happy about it.

Raf,

You say the O-line needs to be rebuilt, but I see a case for better coaching and getting healthy.

I can see the major difference in this team from this year and last has been o-line play. Last year the o-line did a great job at protecting Romo. I know he bought some extra time on his own, but the Garret routes take so long to develop.

Every single o-line player regressed last year. The back ups that were so highly reguarded could not even get on the field. That is too much going on to blame every player.

OL is not falling apart

but it’s not a great line. It’s a good line. It’s run blocking is not elite level and it has four guys — Adams,
Gurode, Davis and Colombo, who make a ton of penalties. Adams and Davis are two of the ten most penalized players the last four years.

And what depth do they have? Doug Free? He’s a question mark at best. McQuistan was in this third year. He’s done. If you’re not pushing a starter by year three it’s time to replace you. Proctor is replacement level as well. What dependable backups does this team have? None. Holland is an average player at best, but how do we know he won’t show up in camp at 400 lbs. like he did last year?

This team needs an upgrade. Beyonce should tape a commercial for it.

Newman/Bradie speaks

Newman:

"It is like the problem when you had the anonymous player saying all that stuff," he said. "They are a coward, you know, and that kind of stuff ruined this season."

Let that sink in: A bigtime Cowboy called another bigtime Cowboy, and Witten specifically — if locker room rumblings about the identity of "the snitch" are to be believed — a coward.
Yes, Coach Cupcake began his attempt at being a butt-chewing disciplinarian by failing to address his players in a post-season meeting, a first in a long time at Valley Ranch.

Nor did Bradie seem particularly pleased with this lack of communication from Coach Cupcake.

"Of course. Who wouldn’t?" Bradie said, when asked if Cowboy players wanted to hear from Wade. "I don’t want to just end this thing and be in the dark. I’m finding out information from you guys. That’s not my decision either. That’s just how it is."

And how it will continue to be.

The Cowboys are divided and I just do not have faith in Coach Cupcake to change into the kind of guy who can fix them.

Garbage

That’s such garbage.
This is what comes of a 24hr news cycle for SPORTS. The players (employees) will be addressed by the coaches (mgmt, their bosses) when the time is right.
Bradie James is far, far, far too close to being a diva for my tastes. Make a tackle, you faerie, then demand the spotlight.
Newman’s right about Witten, though. But he undercuts himself when he voices that opinion to the media and not privately up in Witten’s grill. So, he too is part of the problem. Cut ‘em all. Terence “Was that the Ball that Hit Me in the Back of My Helmet?” Newman has an awful lot to say for somebody who looks like a fool 50% of the time when he’s on the field, especially since he’s spent 50% of his career with his feet up on Sundays watching other people play.

Yeah, Wade looks like a stooge

but he and especially Garrett looked awfully smart one year ago at this time.

Now, let’s remember:

Who was the coach on the hottest seat at this time two years ago? One Tom Coughlin. He’s probably the most secure HC in football now.

And who was on top of the “most likely to be fired” list last year? John Fox. All the rumors were that Bill Cowher was back in N.C. with his family and was just waiting for that job to open up.

Today, John Fox isn’t going anywhere.

Pressure can focus the mind. Not always, but it definitely can.

As for the Coach Cupcake stuff, until these rippers in the Metroplex offer an alternative to Wade, a credible one, they’re nothing but monkeys flinging poo.

I have an idea for a blog

I just listened to Jim Rome’s holiday replacement today, one Andrew Siciliano, go on an extended tirade on how Terrell Owens is at fault for the credit crisis, the recession, oil prices, unrest on the Gaza strip, Garrett’s playcalling and the demolition of the Cowboys franchise. I’m not sure how to order these in importance.
One particularly galling riff had to do with replying to a caller who claimed (and i paraphrase) that if you watch tape, er… replays, you can see TO open on plays designed for Witten. And, if you believe that TO is a problem in the clubhouse, you must be soft-minded, because you have no evidence of this, you don’t know him, you don’t know his team mates or the coaches and nothing substantive about this has ever been reported. And Siciliano’s reply is that the caller is soft-minded to believe that TO isn’t and won’t blow up the team, and cites SF and Philly to prove his point. He states that he HAS watched game tapes – a lie – and sees Owens not beating double teams and loafing and slow and dropping balls.
So, Siciliano is just talking out of his rear. He’s building off the impressions and false-hoods developed by his own industry. It’s reflexive style of rumor mongering that cannot be refuted, because it’s all opinions with nearly no facts to support. He’s being a gossip. Which is fine, but, in this instance, I honestly believe that this hyper-focused gaze on the Cowboys has become something real in how the team operates. It goes to fuel the Star System that hampers team chemistry, and it goes to feed egos and develop rivalries. It distances team mates from each other and from coaches and from management. Perhaps not a lot, perhaps only by a few mere degrees, but I do believe it has a deleterious effect.

So… here’s my idea. A blog about the personal life of sportscasters. Radio, Print, TV. All of them. They have made themselves the central point of many stories, and they are beyond a doubt celebrities in this genre of entertainment. They are very fair game.
If Chris Carter was brought to task by his superiors about the shooting TO comment, the public has a right to know. What did his superiors think? What does Chris have to say? What do his team mates on the set think about his comments? Is it ruining team cohesion? Will there be a law suit? Has he shot anyone else? Is this a pattern of behavior? Can he be trusted to ruin this team like he did in Phily and for a while in Minnesota? Is he back on the sauce? Is he still and always will be a drug user and alcoholic? Does his alcoholism cloud his day to day decisions? Is he drunk now?
good times.

There’s one problem with that. The players, flawed as they are, and they have many, nonetheless have talent.

I’ve been in big rooms with large groups of the sporting press. You won’t find a more ill-dressed, ill-groomed, out of shape, UNINTERESTING group of people.

Nobody would read it. I actually like Jim Rome, in small doses, but that guy will never live down calling Jim Everett “Chrissie” and then hiding in abject terror under the table the second Everett got up to see if Rome would put some skin behind his hot air.

I doubt Jim’s behavior would be atypical, thought I must say, some charity would have made A TON of money back in ’96 if a Troy vs. Skip cage match could have been organized and put on pay-per-view. I would have paid any asking price to watch that.

700 Level

Referring to your “Side note”

Playoff wins don’t mean much if your team doesn’t take home the HARDWARE!

Question:
How does it feel to root for a team that has NEVER won a Super Bowl (emphasis on the "Never")???

You could take the number of Super Bowls Philly has won and times it by 1 Billion and it would still be 5 less than the Cowboys.

Don’t throw out your 2004 NFC Championship T-Shirt cause you’re never gonna have one that says Super Bowl!!!!!! Face it, Philly will always be the Weak Linc in the East :)

Good Day,

Hey prime time

Thats what we always hear. It’s like the end all for all arguments… but here’s the deal. You cant tell me that 1994 seems like yesterday.

I mean yeah, I’d love to have 5 rings. Dont get me wrong. BUT! 13 years without a playoff victory? Man cowboy fans graduating from High school havent seen their team win a playoff game since Kindergarten.

And i’m not throwing salt on the wound, but the last few years have to have been particularly brutal on you guys. In 06 and 07 the cowboys were IMO easily the best team in the NFC

And Terry i dont care what you say, Romo is a choker. There’s not a rebuttal for that argument

If you can't sell out a playoff game, should you lose the right to have a home game?

Dont bet on it

But one things for certain.

It definitly wont be a 44-6 Shalacking!

Yeah, we should have gone with McQ at LT. Anyway,

Its typical kick the cowboys while they’re down stuff from the PFM as oskieoskie names them. As usual, the biggest goat is TO.

But I might just have to side with newman on this one. witten going public with that stuff was the single dumbest move of the year. that was just weak, and I love that guy so it pains me to no end to say it, but man that was flat out stupid.

by THEjarhead on Dec 30, 2008 11:53 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

You don't have....

…to go with McQ at LT. There are other options. The point is the Cowboys are tied to slow fat stupid slob at LT that is way past his prime. So instead of working on his replacement we are going to continue to take multiple penalties every game.

by Cash_BSR on Dec 30, 2008 11:56 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You forgot overpaid

I would say it’s slow fat stupid overpaid slob at LT

by StillHateTheGiants on Dec 30, 2008 12:09 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What other options at LT?

by THEjarhead on Dec 30, 2008 1:24 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Leonard Davis or Colombo ....

could suffice until we find the permanent replacement. You don’t give a guy a 40mil contract just because he’s the best LT you have. I guess you are ready to give Spears a fat new contract since he’s the best LDE we’ve got. Sound strategy.

Flozel was not the main problem on the offensive line this year

The huge weakness in the offensive line is the backup lineman were worse then the backup QB. Prior to a late trade none of the backups can play in the NFL. None of them. I can see how a team misses on a lineman or two; and how coaching changes could mess up a guy, but Dallas lacked a single backup lineman who can even play a game or two.

Flozel provided his usual 10 false starts this season and has never been as dominate in run blocking as his frame indicates he should be; but other then the games he played hurt he handled his man pretty well in pass coverage. When healthy he handles the top pass rushers very well. Better then 75% of the starting LOT in the league. His 2007 pro-bowl was legitimate and he has had multiple years where he held his man to two sacks or less. The Flozel signing was a good short term move. He played well when healthy. The risk in the contract is continued injuries in the next few seasons. Years five and six of this contract are inflated and can be voided with minimal CAP impact, assuming thier is a CAP.

When he is healthy, which is most of the time, teams move their best rusher to give them a chance to try and go around someone else. Colombo has been solid, but he is not as good a pass protection as Flozel. It was very telling that Flozel was the best option the team had at LOT even when he had a bad shoulder and injured hand. You do not see Dallas covering Flozel with a TE when they face a top pass rusher. Most teams have to protect their LOT when they face the better pass blind side pass rushers. Dallas consistenly lets Flozel take on the best one on one and he wins that matchup a high percentage of the time.

This year pass protection problems centered around this teams inability to pick up inside blitzes and stunts. The cause of this problem was the LG inability to hold up at the point of attack impacted the whole unit. This changed the pass protection responsibility of every one on the line. With the mid-season changes to the pass blocking assignments, Georde and Davis contributed to the breakdown in pass coverage by making a number of mental mistakes.

The team needs a healthy Koiser and at least two new lineman. It needs a quality backup at Tackle. At least one who can play OT well enough to cover for either tackle without requiring TE help on a regular basis. They need at least two backup lineman who can fill any of the three inside positions well enough that the rest of the line does not have to adjust to overcome their physical limitations.

I agree with most of this....

….but it’s still time for Flo to go. He’s an undisciplined lout that needs to be on the couch on Sundays. His offside penalties alwasy come at the most crucial of times and I’m sick of it.

Flo has no replacement

You’re kidding yourself if you think Free would do any better.

In Romo we Trust

by Terry on Dec 31, 2008 8:52 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He couldn't be....

….much worse. And how can you be so sure Free wouldn’t be better? Have you seen him play? Other teams are able to put young LT in and perform well with them. There is no way to know the unknown without giving it a look see.

Flo isn’t in the top third of LT in the game. A short list of whose better:

Joe Thomas
Chad Clifton
Jared Gaither
Walter Jones
Jason Peters
Michael Roos
Chris Samuels
Duane Brown
Ryan Clady
Jordan Gross

And I just didn’t feel like adding more, but there are more LT that had better season.

by Cash_BSR on Dec 31, 2008 9:04 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If he was a viable replacement

Jerry wouldn’t have locked up Flo to a long term deal last off season. Clearly the coaches told him Free isn’t ready.

Flo isn’t eilte anymore but he’s better than you think he is.

Jerry locked him up...

….because he’s a know nothing douche that hasn’t a clue as to how to GM an NFL team.

Move Dat

Nguyen up to coach linebackers.

Keep doing what you been doing, keep getting what you been getting.

by OskieOskie on Dec 30, 2008 4:50 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

So who takes over their positions? Did you see anything from the backups that lead you to believe they could do it?

I’d at least consider re-signing spears though a LDE in the 3/4 does not command the same contract as starting LTs, and 40mil was not guaranteed to adams BTW.

You would not have gotten a starting quality LT in the NFL for less money, unless you drafted Oline better in the last 5 years, but that is another post.

Ahh Trey,
stop trying to make sense. this is the time of year for bitter anger to gush forth.

by THEjarhead on Dec 30, 2008 6:28 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

It's also...

…the time of year that homers gush forth with excuses as to why a team with so much talent didn’t make the playoffs. (Silly season)

best options.

If I am Denver I hire spags.. Let him bring in a OC, the offense isn’t a problem. They have the pieces in place and I pretty sure they are top 5 in the league in scoring. If spags can scheme it up and make them a middle of the road D they win 10 games.

If I am Mike Shannan I want the Cleveland Job. Good line in place, QB, WR, and TE all already there..

Both of those places have major upside.. I wouldn’t want the Jets job, unless I was guaranteed Matt Cassel.

easy on the matt Cassel hype

Why would the Jets want him. I would be very careful of giving a big contract for a one years player that has one good year in the New England system….

by Deke on Dec 31, 2008 1:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Fa sho..

Have to do some evaluation; I agree throwing Moss has made a lot of QB’s look good. Tom Brady wasn’t all-world until Moss got there; he was good, but not 50 TD good. I will admit, I like his decision making and the ability to keep the chains moving with his feet. I admit NYJ don’t have a WR as good as Welker or Moss.

true

But, I were Minnestoa I would still trade for him.. A good deep ball thrower, with a quick release, he is a lttle inaccurate, but he good improve.. He is better then both of their options.
