Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

a very obscure, but very possible solution for our backup QB

I like the idea of drafting a backup QB for Romo this offseason and think that my school (Abilene Christian) may have just produced a great candidate.

Billy Malone just graduated from ACU and led our team to a perfect regular season that ended in us being ranked #2 nationally in Div 2.  We did lose a heartbreaker in the third round of the playoffs but in the second round we won by the score of 93-68 (not a typo)

Just watching Billy play every week convinced me that he could make a decent backup in the NFL. He is more poised in the pocket than any college QB I've seen and literally looks like a man among boys.  This is probably due to the fact that he will be 26 by the time the draft comes around which is the main reason I think he is prime to be a backup.  His story is very long and entertaining and I'll post a link to a NY Times article about him later on here.  His age brings the experience we need and his obscurity make it easier for us to get him.

Also I think it would be great because another famous Cowboys backup QB came out of ACU. The one-hit-wonder Clint Longley.

Billy was a D1 recruit before his heart condition forced him to take a few years off.  Now hes perfectly healthy. (talks more about it in the articles about him)

This is Billy's ACU profile

This is the story of Billy's career and is probably the best comeback story of any player entering the draft this year (read both pgs)

This is another profile of Billy with his stats for his first three years

This is another article by Bruce Feldman of ESPN about billys story

I honestly think Billy could be a very plausible solution to our backup QB situation, and his age is what is keeping his draft stock from rising which would be all the better for the Cowboys so we dont have to use one of ou higher picks to pick him up

no i dont have video

but i will tell you that he looks like ben rothlisberger when he plays. He’s a big QB with a great looking release. He can bomb the ball down the field and even though his speed isnt great at around a 5 flat 40 time, he has a very deceiving ability to take off and pick up 12 yards. Theres also a lot of throws that he makes with people hanging off his body and legs

Another option...

Chase Clement of Rice threw for nearly 10,000 yards in his career.

http://riceowls.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/clement_chase00.html

Has thrown 96 touchdowns among his 802 career completions (one per every 8.4 completions). Among the top 10 active career leaders in touchdown passes, only Sam Bradford of Oklahoma (one every 6.4 completions/84TDs in 539 completions) has a better ratio of completions to touchdowns. Clement ranks third on the active list with 96 TD passes, trailing Graham Harrell of Texas Tech (130 TDs on 1,367 completions/1 per 10.5 completions) and Chase Daniel of Missouri (99 TDs on 1,067 completions/1 per 10.8 completions)… 96 touchdown passes are 10tth on the NCAA career list…

He added 3 more against Western Michigan in the Texas Bowl.

Not the prototypical size but then neither is Drew Brees.

Garrett needs to get a clue!

The guys has got the wierdest release I have ever seen.

He’s fearless, but small, and throws with the wacky, side armed/shotput motion. But he is deadly accurate.

The guy I would like them to take a look at is Alex Smith.

The Niners most certainly will cut him and I feel there is untapped potential there.
