I gotta say, I'm a little shocked...

Last night, I'm making grilled cheese for dinner and I overhear Mike Shanahan being fired by the Broncos. My first reaction is WHAT THE HELL??? That's retarded, but then I hop on NOT espn.com to find out why. Among other things, his owner wanted him to find a new defensive coordinator and Shanahan refused. Now it's obvious that if he wanted to, he could be the coach of a team, no problem...

Now I'm shocked that when I wake up this morning, there aren't 74 posts on this blog calling for Jerry to bring him in for, at the very least, an interview - especially with the amount of people calling for Wade's head. Let me be the first...

Now I've never been one that calls for Wade to get the hell out of town. Like someone said before, I'd love to have a beer and a plate of nachos with him (although I doubt I'd get any with him at the table haha, cheap shot, I know). Now this post is only to spark discussion, but isn't this something to consider? Shanahan LOVES Romo. They offered him more money to go to Denver, but Tony chose Dallas (good boy!). And Shanahan, GOD FORBID, stood up to his owner!!! I've always liked the guy, and I think he's a hell of a coach, as well as a great guy for personnel decisions. But what do you all think? He'd come relatively cheap. That's always a plus. He and that Elway dude won a pair of rings. That's gotta be good for Romo's development. If, and that's a BIG if, Wade would move to DC (I know he and Shanny have history), wouldn't that be a VERY solid coaching staff? Jerry came out and said that big name coaches with previous experience don't always pan out (see Tuna), but why not give it a whirl?

Yes? No? Maybe? What do you guys think???

I'd love it

but don’t think it’s going to happen, for whatever reason Jerry seems fine with Wade, even though he has by all accounts lost the team.

Shannahan or Mike Holmgren would be perfect, they run the WCO, which Dallas could easily run and may fit Romo the best. Neither are complete hard arses, but both are no nonsense type of guys.

We could hire one of those guys, and if Wade refuses to move to DC, last year there was talk about Dom Capers, he had accepted a position with Dallas, then backed out so as not to ruffle feathers, dump Wade and bring Capers in to handle the D.

I have NEVER been a dump Wade guy, I was more willing to send Garrett packing, who has been even worse than Wade, but just seeing how the team imploded on and off the field, Wade has to go.

shannahan would be great

He would gain instant respect in the locker room…If wade would not move to dc then bring in capers….This team needs new leadership and to have this guy just fall in our lap is a blessing…I understand the scheme he runs does not match our personel but he can adjust i am sure….

Jerry get it done, fast. So they can have a meeting of the minds. I know if it were to happen TO isn’t going anywhere, I am pretty sure he was one the people that wanted TO after Philly let him go..

Oh yeah

It would be great and make a lot of sense for Wade to move to DC and Shanahan to take over. But it won’t happen for exactly the reason he was fired-he stood up to his boss. I love Jerry and think he really, truly cares, but he only wants “Yes” men. Then again,Tuna wasn’t a yes man, so what do I know? Maybe JJ will realize that it’s time for a big change.

by RPM on Dec 31, 2008 9:44 AM CST reply actions

jerry and shanahan are good friends

I get a feeling that this move will happen..just a hunch…shanahan would also be a big help for romo…

by canty99 on Dec 31, 2008 9:47 AM CST reply actions

i guess yall just dont understand

JJ very seriously said that there wil be no change in coaching staff. He said it during the season. He said it before the Philly game. He said it AFTER the Philly game. and he also said it on the radio yesterday. Jerry IS NOT going to make a coaching change next year especially not HC and OC and im willing to bet that DC and ST stay the same too (as much as I wish those two would go) Stop trying to think of these miracle scenarios that would never happen and that Jerry has already told us wont happen.

PS: No person who has been a head coach the caliber of Wade, Holmgren, or Shanny would ever take a job as a lowly coordinator. just not happening

The caliber of Wade, Holmgren, or Shanny?

To quote Sesame Street (I think), One of those things is not like the other one, one of those things does not belong…Two have rings, one does not…

ok..

If you believe everything jerry tells the media you are kidding yourself…Howver i would not be surprised if he stands put…Also…If wade gets fired he will not be a head coach next year anywhere else…His only choice is being a dc because thats what he is good at not a hc

yes but its different

I agree that you cant believe JJ when he tells you that there will be not draft day trade or that hes not after a certain player.

But when Jerry is throwing the F-bomb to help emphasize his point i have to start believing him

honestly...

… they all lie — including other NFL owners and coaches.

we’ll just have to see what shakes out.

I disagree...I think Shanahan would be more than happy just to coach and be OC....

no pressure, just do what they truely love, it’s to coach, not being an overseer of the whole show…sure both Holmgren and Shanahan were GM/HC’s….but Holmgren grew tired of it, and I’m sure Shanahan would concede the GM duties, it’s getting him to accept running the offense only….cuz he surely can’t put a defense together……IF Wade is comfortable with giving over the title of HC (which i don’t think he would) so be it…….Wade either stays and focuses in on Defense, OR he leaves, and gives way to a perfect fit in Dom Capers………I hope, beg, and pray somehow we can land a Holmgren or Shanahan….that’s EXACTLY what this Offense needs….Not some prissy ivy leaguer in training wheels…

I think it depends on whether or not he is a 'big ego' guy

If he is there is no way he would accept being just a co-ordinator

Campo took a demotion

Well deserved, I should add. Wade is a DC and the quicker he realizes it, the better.

The only problem

is that Shanahan’s zone blocking doesn’t fit our offensive line. What do we do about that?

by rhbgsherb on Dec 31, 2008 10:15 AM CST reply actions

Shanahan's offensive philosophy

does not jive with the personnel we have here. Our o-line is built to be maulers, not zone blocking. I’m open for him to be QB coach/offensive consultant.

Mortensen on ESPN...

He said that Jerry does not believe in bringing in coaches who have previously won a SB. He asked Mortensen to do the research and look at the numbers of coaches who have won a SB with one team and their record with a new team. Jerry for some reason believes that ex SB winning head coaches would not work out!!!

perhaps

but i also think that is a jab at parcells

Yea I made a comment about that in my post...

I definitely think it was a shot at Tuna. Granted, Tuna’s in the playoffs and Jerry is watchin TV on his 60 yard flat screen…

by AikmanNailedMySis on Dec 31, 2008 10:47 AM CST up reply actions

yeah...and Tuna will not win a SB in Miami either..count on it....in fact..I thikn he might go to another team THIS year...

I'm tired of this "Tuna is doing a great job in Miami" stuff

The only thing he did good was hire Sporano. He isn’t the COACH, he isn’t even the GM. He’s head of football operations. He hires the guys who actually do the work. That’s a LOT different than actually DOING the work yourself.

Miami

Is in a good spot moving forward though.. Good GM, Good Coach, and a good base of players.. He gets credit for that.

I'm sure Bill Parcell's will be named executive of the year

It all starts at the top, something that is seriously lacking in this organization.

It is no wonder that teams climb over themselves to get him on board. He is just so lucky, he is almost magical

As I've said before, I dont go to Yahoo! for my sports news...

But this helps my post, and he makes more money for writing than I do haha. Plus it makes T.O. haters happier…

When Owens was on the open market in 2006, the Broncos were the only team that brought him in for a look. That was after Shanahan expressed interest. Ultimately, Shanahan refused to pay the price Owens got from Dallas, but Shanahan at least paid his respect to Owens. That will go a long way with getting Owens to be on the same page as Shanahan.

Yeah but there were parts of that article that implied Cole didnt really know what he was talking about, for example
During Jones’ 20 years with the Cowboys, his best success has come with the likes of Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells riding herd over the collection of stars that Jones likes to assemble.

What success did we have when Parcells was here, and when Jimmy was here Jones didnt assemble the talent.

behind that big offensive line featuring Flozell Adams and Leonard Davis, Shanahan has a good mix of players to operate his type of game

People on this board have already discussed that our o-line doesnt fit his blocking scheme.

I noticed that too. Another case of a journalist "reaching" and not thoroughly doing his homework.

Once again...I don't get it...

Parcells ‘05 9-7 ’06 9-7 ….no playoff wins….where’s the success ?? being above .500 ??

I disagree...

… that this offensive line cannot zone block. Where is the evidence of that? Are people just assuming that? I know one thing’s for sure; whatever blocking scheme they used this year does not work at all. Maybe it would do them some good to bring someone in that could teach them technique rather then having them completely rely on their weight and strength to get the job done.

my guess

if you compare the weight of our line to their the is a pretty big difference.. Only person over 305 is Clady..

I do think if Kosier fits, but everyone else doesn’t.. Maybe Flo 8 years ago, but doesn’t have the footwork.
