Marion Barber out for Steelers game

The Dallas Cowboys official website is reporting that RB Marion Barber is out for this week's game against the Steelers. Barber didn't make the trip.

Barber was held out of practice all week with a dislocated toe. The Cowboys will turn to rookie Tashard Choice and signed Alonzo Coleman from the practice squad as a backup.

Oh well, after all the injuries this season, why not Barber next?

I'm still confident.

It’s too bad though, because a healthy Barber would’ve thrived in this game.

Unbelieveable

Is this just for this game…wonder whether he will available the giants? Tough break for us…i am guessing there is gonna be a lot of short passes in this game.

I assume he'll be ready for the Giants.

Might not matter if we lose this game though. Let’s go New Orleans.

You cannot blame this on him..

Losing Felix was unexpected…what else would you do…sign someone else??

by thejanusman on Dec 6, 2008 3:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

well, the plan was drafting Choice in the 4th round

and having Coleman on the PS. Some folks wondered why they drafted another RB after Felix. Seems to me like it now appears they were planning pretty well….

by scottmaui on Dec 6, 2008 4:10 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

that seems a little...

considering they drafted 2 backs ahead of where they drafted barber…

how many running backs are they supposed to have?

And what would that be?

What starting caliber backup is on the street right now?

Any such player on the practice squad would have been signed by another team weeks ago.

Really!!!

Didn’t the GM draft a first and fourth round pick at RB, re-sign the starter and have one on the practice squad. What else did you want him to do?

how could Cowboys management stock THREE franchise RBs? Do you read what you write?

Felix in the 1st and Choice in the 2nd.

How much more ready could he have tried. You can only carry so many RBs.

Just looking over the standings...

Everyone has been saying if he lose to the Steelers we probably won’t make the playoffs. We could lose to the Steelers and wind up being in better shape than we are today. If we lose to the Steelers, we’ll drop to 8-5 with a 6-4 conference record. If the Falcons lose to the saints in New Orleans (where the saints are VERY GOOD) well, we will be the 6th seed in the playoffs at the end of the day, granted Washington doesn’t win. Don’t get me wrong, I still think we’ll beat them, but if we lose it isn’t the end of the world (as long as Atlanta losses as well.)

by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 6, 2008 3:58 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Yup

I would love a victory over the Steelers (mainly so I can go back to their blog and laugh), but if they do lose, it’s not the end of the world. This game is basically a heat check for the team. Maybe get their confidence up for the REALLY HUGE game next week against NYG.

Suck it.

by what_the_crap on Dec 6, 2008 3:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Forgot to mention...

if Atlanta loses to NO that will make them 8-5 with a 5-4 conference record, giving us the tiebreaker.

by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 6, 2008 4:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

if we lose this one, we can still make the playoffs, so it isn’t technically a “must-win” game but the path gets a lot less certain and less in our control if we don’t win this one.

by scottmaui on Dec 6, 2008 4:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But what about next week

A loss this week and a hard game against the giants next week could have us losing two in a row. I think we can and will win this game. A loss will really hurt.

Picked him up when I dropped Felix in order to keep handcuffing the Barber owner. Well, this is the first week of the playoffs and I am playing the Barber owner. Don’t get me wrong I wish 100% Barber was going, but even with this bad news, I have my opponent handcuffed.

still not a great start

against the PIT D, but he could end up having a decent day for sure…

by scottmaui on Dec 6, 2008 4:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

True...

My other options are:
—Kevin Smith against the Williams’ who will be playing.
—Deuce McAllister, who will be playing, but Pierre Thomas seems to be getting a lot of carries.
—Chester Taylor against the Lions.

You guys think Choice is my best bet? I’ll take a 10-12 point game.

by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 6, 2008 5:01 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's a coin flip between Chester Taylor and Choice

It would seem that Choice would do better because he starts, but the Lions D is bad enough for two backs to have good games.

Very true.

Plus Kevin Smith is banged up, running against a very good run defense, I see a 8 point game or less from him. Chester Taylor and Choice should be in the 10-12 range.

by DieSlowKeyshawn on Dec 6, 2008 5:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Starting Choice in fantasy is a huge mistake

The game plan is going to change and I expect a more passing attack now with MB3 out. MB3 or not we are not going to run much against the Steelers D. If we are going to win this game it has to be done through the air.

I’m really disappointed MB3 can’t go. They should’ve been able to shoot up the pinky toe. One of the regular sports doctor’s on ESPN First Take the other day said this wasn’t an injury he should be out for. They even laughed at the fact if he didn’t play over a dislocated pinky toe. The doctor said they could shoot up the toe or use some type of steel tipped sneaker so he could play. Maybe they are saving him for next week…who knows…not good, either way..

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

Remember that game...

Some years back (maybe 3-4) where Pitt had an outstanding run defense…..then New England came to town and simply came out with Brady in the shotgun and didn’t even bother trying to run against that defense. If memory serves (and it might not), Brady threw all over that defense and NE won handily.

The biggest mismatch in this game on either side of the ball has always been the Cowboys passing offense against the Pitt pass defense. The Barber injury doesn’t change that. There was never much point in running against Pitt anyway. This game is still on Romo, and to a lesser extend, the offensive line. Yep, I’m a homer but I believe Romo will deliver. It’s time for every o-lineman to become a barbarian for a game.

by Cowboy Louie on Dec 6, 2008 4:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

there

a little homer in all of us, even in Steelers fans, Giants fans, and Detroit fans ….. well, maybe not Detroit. But you brought up a great point. All i see is that the Cowboys will lose cause of the running game. That doesn’t meant that Romo can go off for 300 yards and 3 scores, while the D sacks Big Ben 4 times, causing a pick or 2 ….

It’s not going to be as easy as everyone thinks for the Steelers.

Suck it.

I can get behind and it makes perfect sense. Easiest way to negate a very strong run defense is to throw over it.

You know, I agree with you. However, I am just not to happy with MBIII not making the trip. That is a dead giveaway to the Steelers that the Cowboys plan to wind the ball more than pound it. If MBIII would have made it and would have been still probable / game-time, the Steelers would have been grinding the usual “stop the run” game plan. Now they certainly will let Polamalu run like a crazy horse all over (which he does already) but I am just saying…………

by letsgogetonefellas on Dec 6, 2008 8:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I got news for you guy.....Choice will be running the ball just as much as MBIII would have...

And to be quite frank, I believe Choice is the better RB of the two, and was graded higher going into the draft than Barber was…..Choice was/is an excellent prospect……and is as good or better than many rookie RB’s that are having success this season…….I hope your right, and Pitts doesn’t respect the run……cuz Choice will have a field day if that’s the case………

The big question is Choice's pass protection

He has to be able to read the Steeler’s complex blitz schemes and know who to pick up, and also when to release—which we saw Romo getting on him about not doing in the Seahawks game. Choice is a good runner, and he does have experience at GT as a pass blocking back so he might do well, but he’s never faced anything like the Steelers. Barber is a complete back who blocks and releases very well, among the best. So we will miss him in that regard, aside from just the running, and we’ll find out whether Choice can handle this aspect of the game or it ends up being a weakness they can exploit.

not having barber is huge because steelers red zone d is very good and with barber there’s a better chance of pushing it in
also he’s great at blitz pickup
however i really like what choice has done with his limited role this year
he seems like a smart kid and he looks ready
he also had some good blitz pickups in the seattle game but then again its seattle
but i predict romo-roy e. will get a td and crayton will assert himself
romo gets 302 yards..yep and we win 27-13

3/4 agreed

I agree with all assessments except I think a fresh T. Choice hitting the inside run hard may be fine for goal line. What really concerns me is your second point, can he read/pick up the blitzes? If I’m Tomlin, I’m looking to disguise blitz packages more than normal, throw more misdirection, try to confuse him…

God willing, he will rise to the occasion and Romo will throw all over them. We need our aerial attack firing on all cylinders.

FIRST of all..

They say MBIIIs pinky toe is dislocated, like they said Romo’s pinky finger was broken…but when you looked at the X-rays, Romo actually had a broken hand. Barber’s toe problem may not just be limited to a sore toe, and the wisest thing to do is let him sit a while longer.

If the Steeler’s D is one of the strongest against the run, it seems like a foolish strategy to play their game and play into their strength by trying to force the run. It seems that our offensive strength, and their defensive weakness is the air game. In this game, we should establish the pass to establish the run.

I have a feeling that we can beat the Steelers, I’m not so sure about the Gnats.

It seems that our offensive strength, and their defensive weakness is the air game.

I would disagree with that. The Steelers Defence is currently ranked #1 against the run AND #1 against the pass. With the cowboys having a diminished rushing threat, the Steelers should be able to devote adequate resources to the secondary.

At least there’s not much game film on Choice.

by AustonianAggie on Dec 6, 2008 10:16 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The more i think about Choice the more i like it...........

Let me first say that in no way am i saying that MB3 not playing is a good thing. But, I think there might be a silver lining to this. My thinking is to pound away with Choice. This may sound crazy but i have a couple of points on this so hear me out.

1. Choice is fresh. Barber is not. And this is a game that we need a running back that can handle 25 carries without worrying about the guy holding up.,Choice has pretty much been on Ice all year. So they should be able to feed him the rock all day. Now having said that, I’m not saying that he is going to bust out for 100 yards and 3 touchdowns. We don’t need him to do that. But what we do need is for him to keep the Steelers honest. The last thing we want to do is drop back and pass 40 times just because Barber isnt playing.

2. Like most rookie running backs, he will probably struggle picking up the blitz. So if Red Ball abandons the run game you can bet your ass that the steelers will turn up the heat even more. So im thinking we pound the ball even more sense Barber is out.

Don’t get me wrong, we all know Romo will have to make some big plays to win this game. But we can not win if we abandon the run. If you dont believe that, then go back and watch the 1st redskins game. So tomorrow afternoon when Choice is grinding away for 2 and 3 yards at a time, try not to throw the remote through the t.v. Just try and remember that those aren’t negative plays. And that the more you throw, the more chances you have of making a mistake. And the last thing we want to do is turn the ball over and give the steelers help.

So my final message is, POUND THE ROCK!! My final score prediction………….
Dallas 17
Pittsburgh 13

My everything, or nothing

“My everything, or nothing. My everything, or nothing.
We’re gonna fight, until we can fight no more.
We’re gonna lie down. Bleed awhile.
We’re gonna get up. Fight again.”

In his first NFL start, Choice will bring this passion and the sledgehammer too. We’ve been talking for weeks about the team playing with heart. Watch what this kid does tomorrow. Dallas wins. Lock it in.

by NateMac on Dec 6, 2008 11:19 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

wow

that was pretty inspiring…if he’s got the heart, we have to trust him…well, i guess we have to trust him anyway. But still, I think the kid might just bring it.

I have noticed a new resurgence in Cowboy hating in 2007, which can only mean one thing- We're back.

Fantasy Analysis

Sporting News Fantasy Source Blitz has some interesting stats in their analysis:

Five-Star Players

QB Tony Romo, Cowboys. It’s not often that we’ll have to talk you into starting Romo, but this might be one. Do you think Romo is scared of facing Pittsburgh’s No. 1-ranked defense? Of course he’s not. He has three TD passes in six of his last eight games, and outside of Peyton Manning, Romo will be the best QB the Steelers have faced this season. Yes, they have allowed just 166.8 passing yards per game, but take that number with a grain of salt; Pittsburgh has been facing the likes of Joe Flacco and Ryan Fitzpatrick in the AFC North. When Manning came to town, he threw for 240 yards and three TDs. Don’t write Romo off this week.

WR Terrell Owens, Cowboys. The same goes for T.O. Do you really want to bench Owens, who is tied for the second-most TD catches with eight, and risk missing a dominant performance? If you need some convincing that Pittsburgh’s pass D isn’t invincible, Reggie Wayne burned the Steelers for six catches, 114 yards and a score in Week 10. Don’t think Owens can’t have the same success.

Money

I wonder how much Coleman is getting paid extra for this game. I would love to know.

by carsondude on Dec 7, 2008 2:18 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

on paper

It does not look like the Cowboys should stand a chance in this game. Missing their top two running backs. Plus Romo’s hand, Wittens ribs, Flo’s arm, RW2’s foot, No RW1, no Jenkins, no Mcbriar, no Watkins, maybe no Dware (am I missing anyone?) Playing in strong winds and, snow on a sloppy field in front a hostel crowd in temps maybe below zero.

I dont care how ugly, if they have to beg, beg, borrow or steal the game. I just pray for a win.

by 082288 on Dec 7, 2008 5:02 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I think this game comes down to...

Romo making a play in the 4th quarter. I think it goes down to the wire, and Romo has to lead us on a 2 minute drive for the game winning field goal, which I have no doubts he can do.

Our best matchup is our D versus their O

I want to take 3-4 shots deep with TO and RW2 using max protection but playing conservative may be the way yo go.

Our D has been playing much better and its the best matchup in this game. Even the Steeler nation guy thinks our best chance is forcing Roethlisberger in errors. Its not his gamemanship that says this but his fear of their offense. Our D won the Bucs game and they have a better O and ,though not as dominant D, a very good D that is/was very disiplined.

We can always turn up the O if we get behind. Lets not play this game hoping we dont make a mistake but rather looking and forcing them into mistakes. Both of these QBs can and will turn it over. Lets put the pressure on them. Our D is getting better and very underrated.

That's funny...

You have a quote from Bobby V, that states “don’t ever give up” and because of one player being out you’ve already declared a blowout. Irony at its finest.

I’m not saying that Dallas won’t get beat, I’m just saying Philly beat Pitt under very similar circumstances.

by AirforceBat on Dec 7, 2008 11:18 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Just being honest..

if you can’t handle that..that’s your problem. No running game, sub zero temperatures, bad field, our best defensive player possibly out against the #1 defense in the league, in their house equals..not good…Were not a good cold weather team..

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

by Boyzfan94 on Dec 7, 2008 11:21 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

haha...

Are you serious?

You’re being honest?

You don’t know that there won’t be any running game(if there would be one to begin with).

Did you not watch when Dallas beat Tampa Bay with Brad Johnson?

Once again I’m not saying that Dallas is going to win, but they’re a better team then San Diego and Pitt barely beat them.

I’m being entirely objective.

by AirforceBat on Dec 7, 2008 11:27 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

big difference between Tampa and the Steelers

stop kidding yourself…I hope we win don’t get me wrong, but I won’t be disappointed if we lose. My expectations are not high for us to win considering the circumstances. I just hope they show up today and perform well and don’t lay an egg.

Look up... get up...Don't ever, ever give up!!

by Boyzfan94 on Dec 7, 2008 11:30 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Big difference between

Brad Johnson and Tony Romo too.

If you couldn’t get the comparison than I probably shouldn’t talk to you.

I’m saying that its the NFL, and Dallas doesn’t suck as badly as you’d like to think.

by AirforceBat on Dec 7, 2008 11:32 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If the Arizona Defensive line knocked down Romo 18 times in a Cowboy loss

and their defensive line and front seven is average at best, what do you think a great zone blitzing defensive front seven in Pitssburgh is going to do, when Dallas has trouble running the ball, now they have Barber out….. Flozell has trouble with speed rushers, and its going to be windy day for passing….All spells ugly day for the cowboys

by Deke on Dec 7, 2008 11:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And I agree....

But then again Arizona also had to beat Dallas in overtime, and Arizona has a better offense then Pittsburg.

I also think that Cory Proctor escelated all of the problems with the line.

So while you make good points, as long as Romo can actually step up into the pocket and get out of the way of the OLB’s Dallas might be able to get very good protection.

But who knows.

by AirforceBat on Dec 7, 2008 11:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

On Choice...

I think blitz pickup will be the key with him.

I don’t think it changes the fact that Dallas will attempt to run some. Choice has done nothing but show me good running skills.

I think this is going to be a low scoring game that will come down to the QB play.

by AirforceBat on Dec 7, 2008 11:11 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

yup u got it

no doubt thats the key today…

Choice, obviously, doesn't have...

… whatever “it” is that MBIII has. They’re both equally slow, and Choice is a hard runner, but he just doesn’t have the explosion at the point of contact that MBIII has that makes him a threat. just no mistakes, ok Tashard?

by Joey2zs on Dec 7, 2008 11:29 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

not concerned about the running

the blitz pickups is they key her

by canty99 on Dec 7, 2008 11:32 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not...

necessarily. Choice is a little bit faster actually, and I don’t think that you’ve seen enough of Choice to say if he has “it” or not.

Where he doesn’t have the brutality that Barber has, he actually accelerates faster.

by AirforceBat on Dec 7, 2008 11:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

defense

our defense will be the key to this game
look everyone is talking about the #1 defense of the steelers and how our offense will deal with them
we’re gonna score points..i don’t know how many but we’ll get something on the board
but everyone fails to talk about their 24th ranked offense against our 9th D
i mean if their d is so good and we are able to put points on the board then how will they be able to score
i think the cowboys d is hungry and angry and the entire team wants this win
i hope someone sacks big jew ben (im not a racist but its just so obvious when he talks) and makes him eat the words he said about romo
i mean the steelers when playing an actual team, lost the eagles which is emberrasing in its own and they lost to the giants and colts
they play the bengals and browns twice a year so thats automatic 4 wins
they’re a great great team but they’re rankings are gonna slip today

Superbowl or Bust?

I think thats a great comparison....

I think Pitt is good too, but like you said they have played some stinkers too.

The few good teams they’ve played have beaten them.

by AirforceBat on Dec 7, 2008 11:35 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The key to this game is the offensive line, not the defense

If the cowboys cant establish some kind of run to keep the defense honest, not take stupid penaties, stay out of second, third and long and Romo not turing the ball over giving the Steelers a short field to work with, Cowboys will be a long shot at bets to win this game..

just said on Fox hat he woulodn’t run more than a handful of times this game. He’d borrow the Pats’ plan from the playoffs and go with 3 wides and 2 TE and pass, pass, pass. Interesting take.
