MNF open thread
It's the Tampa Bay Bucs visiting the Carolina Panthers on MNF. Is there a way both teams can lose tonight? Guess not. So I'm rooting for Carolina to beat Tampa Bay, and then Atlanta to beat Tampa Bay next week. Unless someone tells me that's not the best scenario...then I'm rooting for whoever can help the Cowboys. How's that?
This is an open thread for Monday Night Football.

I think if Carolina wins the division
and both TB and Atlanta loses as many games as possible, thats what we should root for.
Since we have the 1st tie breaker on TB, I’d rather have them beat Atlanta since we don’t have a head to head tie breaker on Atlanta.
If Atlanta fades out, we’re in great shape.

If we have to play in Chicago in January, in another really cold game, I don’t like our chances.

There's a chance that Minn would be without the Williams Wall
But then again, if they lose them for the next three games, they probably won’t get in anyway.

The Williams Wall is gonna be around, from the looks of it— that lawsuit is going to take some serious time.

Arizona scares me a lot more than the Vikings
We match up VERY well with the Vikings. They can’t pass and can’t stop the pass.

Give me Minny if we make it
I would absolutely LOVE to see Minnesota in the playoffs. We drubbed them last year with no problem— gap discipline can largely contain Peterson, and they don’t have the aerial attack to threaten our secondary, nor do they have the secondary to contain our passing game. Their strengths are running the ball and stopping the run, so we match up with them pretty well.
Arizona would be much more worrisome— remember when they beat us? Just a few weeks back? It was one of the 5, not one of the 8, in our current 8-5?

to me it looks like our season will be on the line in philly…dallas wins there in or philly wins there in…thats why i keep scratching my head wondering how some dallas fans wanted philly yesterday to win. that game is dangerous in philly especially if its for a playoff birth for both teams

CLASSIC late season Philly
I was talking to my friend, a die hard NFL fanatic and big time Eagles fan, about this today. That win yesterday was CLASSIC Andy Reid. Westbrook logged 33 carries, when he hasn’t come CLOSE to doing that all year. That’s Reid’s MO the past 4 years: coach like a stubborn idiot for the first 10 weeks, airing the ball out on every 3rd and short, lose to some inferior teams, and then decide at the end of the season to start putting together run-based game plans focused around his best player and coach like an absolute genius. Remember that horrific loss they slapped on us two seasons back, in the second Boys/Eagles match-up of Parcells’ last year?
I’m telling you, it seems like Reid has a performance based contract that only pays him for wins 1) in December, or 2) against the Cowboys. He puts his ego aside and builds genius game plans for those games only. It is HUGELY irritating, and I have no doubt he and Jim Johnson have been eyeing the Week 17 match-up for some time now, if only because they seem to get a unique joy out of beating the Cowboys.

I'll be glad when the Reid/McNabb era is over
Yeah— just because of Reid and JJ’s seeming obsession with beating the Cowboys, and their willingness to put aside their egos to do it, they have become my most feared opponent over the past 5-6 years or so. Even if their record is 4-11, you know they will play incredibly fiercely against us, and they will have a very good game plan coming in.
It’s very annoying.

Question for you all...
about 5 weeks ago everyone was railing against the 3-4, at least we were over on the Blue and Silver blog. The Cowboys didn’t have the personnel. The 4-3 was better suited for the talent on the team. Ratliff was playing beyond himself, and Canty, Spears, Tank and crew were just sucking, which led to James and Thomas getting leaned on by guards and centers. No push, no strength, poor pressure, zero disruption. However, that has changed. To my layman’s eyes, the front 7 is STOUT now.
My question… what changed? Is it all just Wade paying more attention to the defense? If that’s the case, then I think he deserves to be fired. Because he had the answer to make the defense perform well all along, and didn’t pay attention to it until far too long in the season. Derelict in his responsibilities.
Or, is it due to the health of Newman, Spencer and Hatcher? Or, is it like most things involved in football strategy and tactics, a crazy mishmash of tons of variables that can not ever be properly defined?

Its more man coverage in the secondary
Having seen them the last few weeks, they seem to play very few zone coverages in the secondary. I am guessing this is letting the linebackers become more aggressive. I heard T-New on a radio show before the skins game and he was joking to the audience to tell wade to let them play man in the secondary. Guess they changed it afterall

I do as well
And… I think that all of a sudden, Canty and Spears are showing that they can play and produce and are fine as 3-4 ends. I’d be happier with an enormous maniac at NT who’s 75lbs heavier than Tank or Rat, so that Rat can move to end next to Ware. Canty would be a run stopping role player, or leave via free agency.
It’d SUCK if he landed in New England or San Diego and turned into a star.

Yeah, the guy's not bad
He’s turned a motley crew of QBs into a productive offense in Tampa Bay, and he’s got a Super Bowl and a few division titles to his credit in the 6 years he’s been there. He knows what he is doing, especially on the offensive side of the ball. And that offensive line is sneaky good. He does tend to be a bit pass happy at times, but he’s a West Coast, “a 2 yard out is as good as a handoff”-type coach. What can you do. Nobody’s perfect.

He won that SB
on the back of Dungy’s D. They sure as heck didn’t win it on Gruden’s offense. The second they lost Sapp, Lynch, et all, they went into a nose dive and now he is rebuilding that team around his style of football.
by Mandmeisterx on Dec 8, 2008 8:48 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I would disagree
He won that Super Bowl on the strength of Dungy’s defense (although you’ll note Dungy never took that D to the SB), but he also did it by turning Brad Johnson into an excellent QB, which he had never been before. Johnson had a 5 game stretch to finish the season where he was the NFL’s best QB.
And don’t forget that the team that Gruden BEAT in that Super Bowl, the Raiders, got there on the strength of Gruden’s offense. Gruden had a hand in BOTH teams represented in that Super Bowl, and then completely blew Bill Callahan’s wheels off in a total coaching mistmatch in the big game.

I don't think it's fair to say
that he got them there when Dungy couldn’t. Dungy was close the two years prior to that, and they would have definitely beat the Eagles if not for a bogus rule. And as far as him outcoaching Callahan in the Super Bowl, that Tampa defense was out of this world. They stoned a very potent Oakland offense, all the while BJ was being his usual, pedestrian, bus driving self.
by Mandmeisterx on Dec 8, 2008 9:10 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
You need to look at Brad Johnson’s stats from that season. He was not solely a bus driver.
And the potent offense that Oakland was sporting was Gruden’s. The guy’s a top tier coach. Don’t see any way around that.

Johnson's line from that Super Bowl
18/34 215 2 1
The defense had as many scores as the offense did that game. It wasn’t like he came out and lit the world on fire. And I would hope that you would know how to pick apart an offense you built. Just like Dungy did with the Colts against the Bears in the Super Bow.

This is a ridiculous side discussion, but alright, I’ll bite.
Brad Johnson, 2002:
22 TDs
6 INTs
That’s an excellent year, and it’s Brad’s best. Gruden is a good offensive coach. He single-handedly resurrected Rich Gannon’s career.

I think
the argument is if we’re tied with atlanta and tampa we’d be the 5th seed since we would have a better conference record compared to atlanta and hold the head to head tiebreaker over tampa. I honestly don’t mind who loses. Either Tampa loses and we’re tied if we beat the Giants or Atlanta loses and we are either a game up on them or tied with them still owning the conference tiebreaker.
by Tristan on Dec 8, 2008 10:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Seems our easiest path is if Atlanta loses.
It just seems simpler if Atlanta loses. The rest of their games are conference games, and that will leave them at 8-4 in the conference if they win out. If they lose and then they and Tampa both win their last 2, Dallas is guaranteed a playoff spot by beating NY and Philly, and probably gets in if they win any of their last 2.
If Atlanta wins and they both win out, then Dallas has to win all of their last 3 games. Both of their schedules are easier than ours, so it seems the best bet is if we have a little leeway.

As long as Dallas beats the Giants, they're looking real good.
I know, that’s a big if, but this is the true must win game. As pointed out, it works out okay for the Cowboys no matter who wins between Atlanta and Tampa. Either Chicago or NO will knock each other off pace. Either Philly or Washington will knock each other off pace the next week. It really looks like the 2 games Dallas has to win are the Giants and Philly, as that gives them conference tie breakers over every team that can finish 10-6 (If Minnesota goes 10-6, they win their division), but will need Atlanta to lose at least one more game.
Of course, if they win out, they are in like Flynn.

I still would love to know
was it the wind, his semi healed pinkie being brace less, or what? His passes were terrible for the most part. Maybe he just flushed the crap out of his system and will be good to go down the stretch.

I will say this...
If it was the same and Dallas played Minnesota… I think thats probably the easiest matchup int he playoffs honestly.

Just saw that Chris Samuels is out for the season.
That doesn’t make things easier for the Redskins, especially if Horton is hurt too. Or hears a who.

Jansen is hurt too.
George Teague did it all.

Jerry Jones is calling out Barber for not playing

They should rest Jason Witten
I think his injury is effecting his execution, and probably practice time. When he was out, Bennett caught a first down, and the Cowboys went down the field and scored. He’s probably been practicing more. I think Witten needs to sit a game and heal.

Jerry Commenting on Marion Barber
I truly hope Jerry’s comment was neutral. This is not a time for him to be opening his big mouth about something like that.
It only leads to negativity with the players and gives the media something to create a circus around.

Yeah but..
We are playin at our house, plus, we don’t have to worry about Plexiglass Bocheeze anymore. Any more word on B. Jacobs?
Man, if they stick to their Eagles game plan, we oughtta be able to kick their butts all the way back to NY.

I think the trouble the giants had with the eagles had something to do with the swirling 22MPH winds
mcnabb had the same trouble, that game was taken over by westbrook.
The conditions won’t be anything close to that in Dallas.
