Franchise Rankings
Have you ever had to defend the Cowboys in terms of their place in the hierarchy of all franchises?
We all know in our football hearts that the Dallas Cowboys are the greatest franchise since the merger, but this guy quantified it in a pretty cool way.
I don't know if you listen to Bob Sturm or read his blog, but basically he's a sports radio personality from KTCK, which happens to be the greatest sports radio station of all time. Grizz and Bob have mutual links, and Bob's blog is actually how I first sumbled upon this blog. Anyways I digress...
This is a ranking system that assigns specific point values for different accomplishments like playoff wins and appearances, championships played in, etc. I applaud Bob for constructing this ranking system in this way, being that he is a Green Bay fan and most Packer fans would like to claim "greatest franchise ever" based on league championships prior to and after the merger. But then, the point is to rank teams post Superbowl I, so I guess he had no choice.
It's only what we already know, but seeing it always makes me smile - I especially love seeing the Patriots with barely over half as many points as Dallas.
All the teams are on here, check it out sometime.

It makes sense as the Cowboys and Steelers are
the 2 most popular franchises in the NFL. There is a reason why the 2 teams have so many fans.
The bar where I saw Dallas play GB was
full beyond capacity, as were all the bars in Austin that night. Anyhow a dude with a steeler jacket asked if he could perch at my table. I let him, but after a few beers he started talking loud about the Steelers being the greatest NFL franchise, the real "Americas team", that kind of stuff.
My buddies and I just laughed at him and after a while he gave up and just watched the game. All he kept saying was "we owned you guys in the 70's". I told him I wasn't around back then, so I would have to take his word for it. But yeah they are a great franchise and if I had to pick any other team to get behind it would be the steelers...lucky for me I don't have to.
thats funny
too bad iwasn't sitting there with you guys because I was around back in the '70s and would have torn into him about those arguments.
Fact is the Steelers were about as lucky as a team could be in SB X and XIII, especially SB XIII. To say they owned us is a complete joke.
I just watched Super Bowl 13
Terry Bradshaw said we whopped them we still whup them today - The Steelers were a bad ass team - IMO they are number 2 team behind Troy Emmitt and Irvin

Jackie Smith doesn't drop that ball
its a whole new game. Our '70s teams weren't that far behind that dynasty as those 2 SBs (X and XIII) could have gone either way.
There is no doubt
that they didn't "own" us. The games were very close and Pittsburg did have a little luck on their side, but they were still one of the best teams in league history. What pisses me off the most is the difference in HOFers from that period. It is just completely ubsurd to think that Rayfield Wright, Roger Staubach, and Bob Lilly are the only players in from that decade, compared to seven Steelers.
I totally agree
the only reason most of those Steelers made the HOF was because of those 4 SB wins, guys like Bradshaw, Swann and Stallworth certainly didn't put up HOF career numbers.
Exactly
Stallworth put up decent numbers and with the rings, he could be considered a hall of famer. Swann was definently not a HOFer. Drew Pearson deserves to be in the hall if those two men are in. Pearson had 153 more catches, 2396 more yards, only 3 less recieving TDs, and just as many Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections. Also, Pearson was even more clutch than Swann and anybody who remembers or has seen replays of the playoff games from that time knows that, (i.e."Hail Mary", 1973 playoffs vs. the Rams). Mr. Clutch should get in if Swann is.
Also, since I'm on this rant of unfairness, Bullet Bob should be in the hall. He meant to much to this game not to be. I wasn't around then, but I've heard enough. He brought speed to this game, he is why we have all those 4.3 NFL players. Career stats:
Receptions 371
Receiving Yards 7,414
Touchdowns 71
Those are amazing numbers for that time period. Thats a 20 yrd per catch average and a TD every 5th catch. Hayes still holds 10 regular-season receiving records, four punt return records and 22 overall franchise marks. I admire Paul Zimmerman so much for standing up for what he believed in by resigning from the selection commitee for not letting Hayes in.
Drew Pearson should be a HOFer
Its a travesty that a member of an all-decade team (70s) is not elected to the HOF, just a travesty.
He is the reason....
I am a Cowboy fan in the first place..as he was my favorite player growing up. That Hail Mary play was against Minnesota....not the Rams..

I meant that
me too boyzrback, although it was more
of a combination of Staubach and Pearson. When I was a real little kid I always liked the Cowboys, but that playoff game against the Vikings when Staubach hit Pearson for the game winner and then the shalacking we put on the Rams the following week in the NFC Champiosnhip was the when I truly fell in love with the team. Been addicted ever since.
yeah....just about the same time I became a fan.
Pearson being my favorite...Roger as well..TD Dorsett, Ed Jones, Randy White, Robert Newhouse, BJ Dupree, Harvey Martin, John Dutton, Hollywood Henderson, Dennis Thurman, Preston Pearson, Bob Bruenig, Butch Johnson, Larry Cole, Tony Hill, Chuck Howley, Tony Hill, etc. etc....
Those were the days, when you can keep the teams together, and build championship caliber teams without worrying about free agency and the salary caps....which ruined team sports as we know it.
Still might be my favorite edition of Cowboy dynasties....And were every bit as good or better than the Steelers and Raiders of the 70's.
