Could da Tuna Do Our Cowboys a Favor?
Of course, this is mere speculation... but foxsports.com's Alex Marvez seems to think that the Dolfia -- Bill Parcells/Jeff Ireland/Tony Sparano -- could sign some current Cowboys to short-term deals as they begin their rebuilding process.
I know you're probably thinking, how in the heck is that trio gonna do us any favors by signing some of our players?
In Marvez' breakdown of AFC East teams and their expected attempts to upgrade their present rosters in the off season, he has this to say about the Miami Dolphins...
Projected cap space -- $21.6 million: Thinking he had more long-term job security, Mueller made personnel decisions last off-season designed to clear cap space for 2008. Still, the Dolphins have so many issues that even the room Mueller created isn't enough to fill every hole. Because of their familiarity with Dallas' personnel, don't be surprised if Miami takes a stab at some of the Cowboys' pending free agents like left tackle Flozell Adams, safety Ken Hamlin, and cornerbacks Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones. Re-signing right guard Rex Hadnot before the signing period begins should be Miami's top priority.
Although I disagree with him on Big Bill signing an older Flozell Adams to a lucrative deal, I could see him adding Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones as vets who are familiar with their way of doing things.
Although it probably won't happen, a man can always hope and pray, can't he?
Oh God in Heaven, please give Ireland and Parcells an overwhelming desire to acquire these two DBs...

I'm not losing sleep...
They can have Reeves and Jones cuz I don't see us resigning neither of them. Hamlin and Flo are Jerry picks, not big Tuna picks. Hamlin will be resigned, Flo will be frnchised or signed to a very cap friendly home team contract..
It might be time for us to start raiding their coffers...Today Miami cut Trent Green-QB better than Brad Johnson..., LJ Shelton-T/G the guy is a house, and Marty Booker-WR once was 1,000 yard receiver in Chicago ...
LJ Shelton - 6'6" 345lbs...at left guard ???
That would bring our starting O-Line average up to about 6'6"-330lbs....Think Hudson Houck could work with that ?

I think Green is going to retire
Shelton and Booker are washed up players as well, thats why they're cutting them loose.
I don't want another team's garbage, especially the worse team in the league.

Mike Wahl -LG becomes available..Carolina
Reports have Wahl and LB Dan Morgan cut from Carolia...
When we signed Marco Rivera-G a few years back...it was actually his teammate Mike Wahl that many had graded better, and younger, and I prefered at the time....
....Not sure why he was released yet....But he's a guy to look into...as he played T and G...good depth at least....or starter over Kosier..

Also
I don't want the worst team in the league's garbage.
Marty Booker-We don't need an another aging WR who is merely a below average slot reciever.
Trent Green-he would be okay, but he is almost 38 yrs old and he is not one that wants to go anywhere that won't give him a chance to start. Since he is no longer with the Dolphins, who have no QB and a veteran QB lover in Parcells and Sparano (i.e. Vinny and Bledsoe), he is most likely done.
LJ-aging, was a decent RG, below average LT. He aged fast in Miami and has had injury issues in the past.

Parcells had nothing to do with
signing Ken Hamlin. At all. period. Stop the speculation that Ken Hamlin is one of Parcells guys. Jerry signed him. He signed Ken Hamlin after Wade was hired. Wade was at the press conference introducing Ken to Cowboys fans. To say that Miami will go after him because he is a talented FS and Miami has a need there might hold water. But to say that Miami will go after Ken because of his familiarity with him is short sighted ESPN babble.

Yeah, that's where Marvez didn't do his homework
The Hammer was signed in the off season AFTER da Tuna decided not to come back to Big D.

Jeff Ireland...
...was VP of pro and college scouting when Dallas signed Hamlin. Ireland is now GM of the Dolphins. I don't think it is unreasonable to say Miami may be interested because of their familiarity with him.
That said, I don't think they will sign him. When you have as many issues as the Dolphins have, you don't start by giving big money to a veteran free safety.

I'm sure Jeff Ireland
had a hand in signing Ken Hamlin and I am sure is very familiar with him as a player. They are lumping Tuna and Ireland into it together.
A veteran free safety, who is only, what, 26 and just went to the pro bowl for a 13-3 team? I see him being very attractive to the Dolphins - great place to start building up your defense with a great defensive quarterback. I'm very concerned with losing Ken Hamlin this year.

I think Hamlin should be franchised
if we can't sign him to a long term deal. It would be cheaper than franchising Flo.
by Terry on Feb 12, 2008 8:26 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Now your talking
I completely agree with franchising Hamlin instead of Flo or anyone else. He is just hitting the prime of his career, and he has proven to be an excellent qb of the secondary. He can play free safety or the somewhat outdated position of strong safety. Exactly the kind of guy you want to lock up long term. Hamlin and Canty are our most important free agent signings, and Hamlin causes the most concern because he is unrestricted.
I'm not ready to give up on Reeves until I see who the replacement is. If we don't sign Reeves, Jones or any other corner in free agency then we will tie our hands in the draft - we will have to go corner in round one. I'm all for drafting corners in round one, but you never like to enter the draft with your hands tied.

I agree Louie
its always best to go into a draft without any glaring needs so you can take the best player that falls to you.
However, looking at this draft, I'm still convinced that an elite RB or CB will be there at #22 when we pick.
by Terry on Feb 12, 2008 9:03 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
there will plenty of CB's available to us...
I certainly wouldn't be locking Reeves or Jones to a contract prior to the draft ...Neither one of them will be a hot commodity come free agency...although I can see Reeves getting interest..If we lose them I'm not concerned at all....we draft 2-3 CB's in the draft, then after June 1st, guys like Shaun Springs may become available, then of course more will be cut lose in training camp and preseason...don't panic...Reeves is not a #3 CB, not here at least......nor do i wish to outbid someone to retain him. If we get him for the minimum fine, but some team is going to pay him too much cuz their secondary is just that bad...I see him going to New Orleans or Detroit or Cincy or any other team with pitiful secondaries...

I think Reeves will sign with somebody
because he has the one commodity all teams covet in CBs and thats pure speed. While Reeves has a ways to go learning to play the position, he's always been fast which is the reason the Cowboys have always kept him around.

Maybe Campo could make a difference with Reeves
How and what do you mean... you might ask?
Everyone knows that Jacques Reeves has got blazin' speed, but why is it that he doesn't have the confidence to use it in coverage?!?!
I mean, he gives up a considerable cushion to receivers in coverage and usually makes the tackle after the pass is thrown to his guy.
It would be cool if ex-Cowboys HC and now secondary coach Campo could improve his technique and instill some attitude and swagger to make plays and use his jets as closing speed in coverage. Maybe better coaching could improve this corner.
I wonder if Bowles worked with Reeves that much... and if he did, what tips were given and what drills were implemented.
If Campo was able to help Roy and Reeves improve their cover skills... while helping develop Courtney and Ball, I'd be ecstatic.

It was earlier this season
when people where talking about how admirably Reeves was filling in for the injured Newman and Henry. They started to say, given the proper tutoring, maybe this man could even start one day. Reeves has all the physical tools and should be given a chance to play. He shouldn't start, or even be a nickel corner yet, but he should be given the chance to with proper coaching based on the flashes of okayness we've seen from him. God, that was difficult to write.

I guess 4 plus seasons isn't enough ?
I agree...If nobody in the league wants this guy...we take him back at the league min.....but some team is going to overpay for him...you'll see..
