Cowboys To Let Flozell Adams Test Free Agency
From kffl.com
Team to allow F. Adams to test free-agent market
Calvin Watkins, of The Dallas Morning News, reports the Dallas Cowboys will allow unrestricted free-agent OT Flozell Adams to test the free-agent market before offering him a contract.
Good move or Bad move?
I think this gives an idea that Cowboys may let him go.

Here is some more info
where I think it got started.
But Adams, the left tackle, is an unrestricted free agent and the Cowboys are waiting to see what he gets on the open market before extending a deal. Colombo wants Adams, who is considered one of the top left tackles in the league, to return.
Cowboys/NFLIf the price for Adams is too high for the Cowboys, Pat McQuistan starts at left tackle.
I think Jerry has a secret deal with Flo's agent
in that he gives Jerry the opportunity to match any offer made to Flo by another team. If Jerry wants to mtach it, he can, otherwise he tells Flo good luck and moves on.
Personally, I really hope there isn't a team that overvalues Flo because I'd be really nervous going with an untested, inexperienced, second day draft choice becoming Romo's body guard.
I think it's time to move on
We need to use the cap space to sign other players. We have the depth to replace Flo. Flo is as good as gone.

Free isn't as good as Flo
Flo is an eilte LT who consistently shuts down the best pass rushers in the game, we're not going to get that kind of production form Free, at least not next season.
I agree with you Terry
But...it's going to cost too much to franchise him, and I bet someone (Miami?) will value him higher than the Cowboys can afford to invest in him, and still get their other FA's re-signed.
Like I said before, Doug Free doesn't have to be as good, he just has to be good enough. Let's hope he can grow into the position. I feel better having a great O-line coach to help him.

Miami doesn't want Flozell
They're rebuilding, they want to develop a team from top to bottom, they're sutting their veteran players, I dont think they're going to pay an aging veteran in Flozell 9 mil a year contract. If anyone that woud make a run at Flozell, Chicago would be a team I think that would show alot of interest.
Yeah, I read that the Bears are interested
I only mentioned Miami, because of Sparano and Tuna, and they cut a couple OT's already. But they could take Jake Long #1 if they like him.
by APerfectStar on Feb 19, 2008 6:54 PM CST up reply actions
I'll bet money Miami takes the other Long
Howie's boy #1 if they can't trade the pick. This kid is Parcells type of player.
Remember, he loves players who comes from football families.
Plus, C. Long played under FOB Al Groh...
... in a 3-4 @ UVa.
I agree Terry. If da Fins don't trade that pick away for multiple picks, Chris Long will be their guy.
I don't care
time to move on. Free could be as good if not better, but we won't know until he plays. That's all part of the process Terry. You can't expect this process to evolve without some growing pains. Whoever we get their going to suffer the growing pains. Flo wasn't going to be here forever. It's time to move on with the youth movement.

we're supposed to be a SB so that means
we shouldn't have to have any growing pains at a critical position like LT. Thats a recipe for disaster.
Ask Philly about replacing a pro bowl LT with a younger player who's supposed to be good. That kid put Osi on the map.
I seem to recall
the Colts doing ok replacing their pro bowl LT with a rookie. It's going to happen, it happens to every team when the price of an aging player get's too expensive. When you start overpaying for ageing players your cap suffers. Smart business is when knowing to cut your ties and move on. This is the time. This is why we draft young players for this very reason. Time to see if drafting Free was worth a good choice or not. Don't be too disappointed when it happens, because it's going to.

why would I be disappointed??
If Free has to start next season and plays well, nobody will be happier than me. I'd absolutely love to be wrong, however, I just don't feel good about a 4th rd pick with no experience replacing a pro bowl player who is proven, but I do hope I'm wrong. I was wrong about Hamlin last season, and I loved being wrong about him as well.
BTW, Tony Ugoh was a first rd pick, not a 4th, big difference.
Ugoh wasn't rated very high
coming out. Many questioned him being a first round pick. MB3 was a fourth round pick and he turned out all right didn't he. Don't assume just because he wasn't a first round pick he can't be just as good, if not better than a first rounder.
by Cowboys81 on Feb 19, 2008 8:30 PM CST up reply actions
MB3 also had a 2nd rd grade although he
was drafted in the 4th rd, he was a steal in that rd, just like Canty was.
Ugoh had a 2nd rd grade but was drafted at #32 which is practically a 2nd rd pick.
It also helped Ugoh that Colts have a great O line coach so if we have to start Free, hopefully Houck will do a good job with him.
Not to split hairs
Ugoh went 42nd not 32nd (they took Anthony Gonzalez with #32) The liked Ugoh enough to move up as they saw him slipping trading this year's first rounder and a fourth from last season to make the deal.

William Thomas was out
when OSI had six sacks against Winston Justice, The coaches didn't exactly help him out any with a tighend chip or a back out of the backfield in that game. Osi gets too much credit, half of his season sack totals for the year came in that one game.
Flozell isn't going to get offered in the 5 to 6 million range, the way free agent guards contracts went last year, Left tackles get alot more money, someone will offer Flozell in the range of 9 to 10 million, if he does, its time to part ways.
OSI UMENYIORA!
Get used to hearing that name over the Texas Stadium PA system (unless George Dunham gets hoarse) when the Giants come to town!
along with many other sack artists
fans won't realize how good Flo is until he's gone and Romo is being pumpeled in the pocket each game.
let him earn his money.,,,,,,
Run Tony Run..... How bout we trade up to the top 3 , and draft Darren..oppss..I mean, Jake Long ??...

Economics + Father Time = Bye Bye Flo
Adams has been a very good LT for Dallas for a long time. He had a couple of season near the elite level. However, he is on the downward side of his career. His false starts have been very detrimental to the offense and he has a lot of wear and tear on his body. The smart move is to let him test the water. If his FA value is less than he exptected, he may well stay a Cowboy, otherwise we should start schooling up his replacement.

So my initial reaction was:
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
But then I calmed down and thought about it. Remember last year when Colombo was going to be a FA? Seems like the Cowboys had an amount in mind that the agent didn't agree with, but after being underwhelmed in free agency, came back to the Cowboys. So there is precedent.
On a grander scheme, realize that the Cowboys pay fair market value to the their players. The way they stay under the cap with all their good players is by drafting reasonably well (2004-wow!) and by signing guys coming off bad years/bad situations to undervalued contracts that make them "prove it" so to speak. As an example of this, look at the contracts of Romo (similar to Bulger), Colombo (Jets offer), and Leonard Davis (Dockery, Steinbach, etc). All paid market value.
As a last point, and I've made this before, the models for a successful franchise (Pats, Colts, Jags) all shows us that developing depth through drafting (drafting well, letting them develop as backups, then taking over when the starter ahead of them's contract runs out) and letting players go when it's their time if they want big money. At some point, we need to switch to this model.
good post Ghetto...It is what it is....
If Flo truely wants to come back and retire a Cowboy...Let him Prove it...He's already a multi millionaire...thanks to the Cowboys...now show some loyalty. Play for 5-6 million or kick rocks.
Don't expect us to resign you when/if you retire from another team.

Plus Flo has no postseason success
in his career. Would he rather earn $6 mil with the boys and a chance for a ring or $9 mil with the bears and maybe not make the playoffs? I would hate to lose his skills and protection but I wouldn't miss those drive killing false starts at all. They do matter and for $9 mil a year, you'd better not have so many.
i think
the team is a lot better with flo and either watkins or another FS than with Free and Hamlin.
i think flo is one of the guys we cant afford to lose
the problem is we can't
afford to keep him. I'm sure they would like to keep him, but we have other free agents we have to sign.
by Cowboys81 on Feb 19, 2008 8:03 PM CST up reply actions
that all depends what his market price
turns out to be. If its around 5 or 6 mil a year, I say sign him. Ifs its closer to 8 or 9, let him go.
They do have TE's and blocking RB's on our team
If he needs alittle help...so be it...two TE sets help out alot too...we can do this...ye of lil faith.
I say cut ties with Flo....Heck..I'd like to rid ourselves of ever 30+ player on the roster...besides TO....
we can call our team "TO and the kids"

And it could be da next bk in the Little T series
"Little T. Learns To Be A Good Big Brother"
LOL!!!
no shot..
there's no way in hell the let flo walk...if they paid big bucks for a bigg guard they will pay flo...we already saw what happend when he went down with his knee, we sucked, he'll be here and he'll be paid good money...
I agree if the contract is right
I say keep him at 7 mil over 2 or 3 years but anything larger than that, unfortunately he'll have to walk.
Losing Flo will be tough because I'm not confident Free is quite ready yet.
Flo's agent say the team is negotiating
with them for a new contract. Hopefully, a deal can still be worked out. I'm crossing my fingers.
But while the Cowboys are unlikely to franchise Adams, they still remain in negotiations for a contract extension.
According to his agent Jordan Woy, the two sides remain in discussions regarding ideas and parameters for a deal, although he said it is still early in the process.
