Hamlin tagged
Per Adam Scheffter according to
profootballtalk.com
With the deadline for using the franchise tag looming at 4:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, the Cowboys have used theirs on safety Ken Hamlin, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.
Hamlin signed a one-year deal with the Cowboys last year during free agency. He started in every game, and had a career-high five interceptions.
The move might have been prompted in part by the decision of the Vikings to cut safety Dwight Smith, since the Vikings might have pursued Hamlin aggressively in free agency.
The use of the tag on Hamlin also means that left tackle Flozell Adams will become an unrestricted free agent.

beautiful, now they can really concentrate on
getting big Flo signed, as well as MB3 and Canty.

seems like...
...there is a feeling in the media that The Hotel may not be a Cowboy next year. Here is Scheffter in the article Grizz linked to:
Dallas already is discussing the idea of inserting Pat McQuistan at left tackle to protect Tony Romo’s blind side. But the fact that the Cowboys did not tag Adams indictates that the Cowboys are preparing to move on without one of the most physically dominant offensive linemen in the game.
Adams will be 32 this summer but another team is expected to be willing to hand him the massive contract he will be seeking. Without Adams, Dallas could turn to McQuistan or it could move Leonard Davis from guard back to his old left tackle position.

I think this simply means that Dallas feels they have some options at left tackle but don't really have a good option to Hamlin at free safety. And while they are not writing off re-signing Flozell, they are more willing to take their chances letting him test the waters than they are letting Hamlin test the waters.

Adams willl be 33 in May, not 32

If the Cowboys can't work out something with Flo
I'm thinking Free is the guy they want to assume the LT spot, not McQuistan or Davis.
I'm disappointed Scheffter doesn't know this as he's one of the best NFL inside men.
But boysandbosox is right, we have nobody to effectively replace Hamlin at all, plus his franchise tag is much cheaper than Flo's.

Sorta
But he probably doesn't even know who Free is.. and how would he. It's not like he's seen any playing time.

as the inside man for the NFL Network
Scheffter should know every teams roster inside and out.

Was that a Mork from Ork reference there?

It was reported...
...somewhere else this week that McQuistan was the heir apparent. Schefter probably just read that. Most of the media just follow each other.

sublimezg, you know what I mean
if he's reporting about Flo's backup, the source better come from the Cowboys and not hearsay through the media.
I meant he needs to do his homework better.

I fully agree Terry
Nothing pisses me off more than when people who are paid to know about football, copy their work from other writers who obviously know nothing about the teams and players they write about.
I get ALL of my news from BTB now, I can't stand the media anymore.

Exactly
There is still a chance that Flo takes a deal and comes back. He could spend his whole career here, or he could jump (no pun intended) for a big money offer. He's worth a big contract, and he should take the money while he can, but I'd love it if he signed a cap-friendly, home-team discount type of deal. I don't want to move Bigg; I'd much rather us use McQ or Free or draft a LT in the first 2 rounds.
Hamlin, on the other hand, came to Dallas on a 1 year deal to give him a chance at a big contract this offseason. He's the best safety on the market, so any replacement would have been a downgrade, and would be worth a long-term deal to many teams. Hopefully he, too, will realize that he has a good thing going and sign a long term deal here. Either way, we've got him for this year, and that's a great thing.

If Flo is gone
I would feel better if we had a great left guard playing next to our new left tackle, but Kosier might be our weak link. Having one weak link on the left side is OK, but if our new left tackle struggles - look out. Teams will attack the left side of our line unmercifully.

totally agree "e"...
which is why i'd be all for looking at a LG that would actually cost less than Flo....Wahle is gone...oh well..next up... Alan Fanaca.

Faneca is going to cost too much
by Terry on Feb 21, 2008 7:08 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
Unfortunately we don't have a lot of choice, since it seems doubtful that we could pay Flo what he'd want and certainly not for the length he'd want. Here's hoping that Free and McQ are ready. I think if they thought there was no way they could start, we'd have franchised Flo instead of Hamlin, cost be damned.
Then again, maybe Bigg is the back-up plan. Stupid salary cap...

I know...I'm tired of this cap crap.
Should be like MLB with the luxury fine they have if you go over 130mm or something...Anything's better than this year in and year out disgarding of seasoned vets, restructuring contracts, etc. etc......It dilutes the game, IMO...They NEED to set in place a rookie cap...so teams don't have to come up with 70 million dollar contracts for guys who have never put foot on an NFL field....that's where the problem lies.
At least in the NBA, they have an exemption to retain your own vets, without screwing up your cap figure.
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 21, 2008 5:35 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Well, the cap is fine...
That was a bit of a joke. It's just annoying when you have to let guys like Flo go, but it's part of being a successful organization. The teams that generate FAs like him are the successful ones. The Cowboys were doing rather well before the cap was put in, but I think it's good in general, and is the reason why the NFL is the true parity league. Any team can compete (though Buffalo has been having some financial issues of late). I think it's much better than the MLB system, which is a joke by comparison and turns over half of the teams into a glorified farm system. Or the NBA system, where old guys that can't play with bad contracts are the most valuable trading chips there are.
I do agree that the rookie contracts thing is a bit of a problem; it's getting to the point where nobody wants to pick in the top 5. That seems wrong.

I liked the old school system the best
no FA, no cap, you lived and died by your drafts.
by Terry on Feb 21, 2008 7:10 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The MLB
system is total crap. Look at the Devil Rays, their farm system is loaded and I could almost gaurentee that not a single one will finish their career there because they don't have the money to sign guys more expensive then minor league deals. I'm glad that I am not a fan of a team that doesn't have the money or isn't willing to spend money but then you look at the Yankees who have a total payout of over 200 million this year, how is a team supposed to compete with that? If they actually took the time to bring them together, they would be very good. Thank god for those NY fans.

Well, If Tampa put a winning product together...
Maybe they would fill their seats.
I'm glad that I am not a fan of a team that doesn't have the money or isn't willing to spend money
The owner is a multi millionaire, and the cheapest basterd alive.
To throw away all the talent they've drafted is beyond explanation...Some teams know how to market a product, some don't...
I'm not proposing there should be no salary cap, but at least make it so you can exempt your own players, so there can be continuity in this league....this parity nonsense is for the birds..
Look at "the greatest team of all time..lol"
They are losing their entire secondary and receiving corp. talk about going from best to mediocre over night...that's shameful.
