Cap room

Nick Eatman of Cowboys.com seems to think we have no room to sign any FA at all with our cap room. Seems that with Adams, Hamlin, Canty, and Barber we're "stuck" with the same exact team. Not too say that's a bad thing, but don't ya'll seeing us pick up somebody in FA who might help us? From what I've been reading, the Cowboys were in good shape with cap room. Hamlin is already locked up with the franchise tag and I was under the impression they'd let Adams test FA and Barber would require a 1'st and 3rd round pick if somebody wanted to outbid us. I was hoping for a Roy Williams trade or possibly giving something up for an Asante Hall or Deangelo Williams deal. Sound off Boy's fans!!!

I am not a Capologist

but that doesn't sound right. Also, we might not even keep Adams. Even if Eatman is right, we will still have new players via draft.

If we sign Flozell

Then it's likely correct that we'll have no cap room.  If we don't, then there will be a little room to play, but not enough to do anything significant.  Keep in mind that we have to sign 2 first round draft picks too, so really there are a lot of guys in line right now.  One of the great things about having a good young team is that your players are cheap.  Now, Barber, Canty, Ware, etc. are in line for their first big contract.  When a guy goes from making less than $1m to making $4m, your cap gets eaten up in a hurry.

Also, this is the cost of keeping Romo under contract.  His deal ate up a lot of our cap excess from last year.  Big contracts to Gurode and Bigg took care of the rest.

Cowboys Cap

Before we tagged Hamlin, we were at $9 million.  Take his amount of $4.396 million.  That will leave us at $4.631 million left over.  Who would we sign and stay under cap?  Even if we trade Roy Williams, his extension still cuts into our cap.  And we still have to sign rookies we draft this year.

I know there were discussions of trading Carp and Spears, but would those still hit our cap?

We still have to sign Barber, Canty, and still a possibility that Cowboys will still sign Flo at a smaller contract.

What will we do?

That's a good bet also

At least in Romo's case.

Where did you hear this?

I just wanted to know. Man, one year Romo gets a huge contract and the same year he is being prssured to make it cheaper.

not pressured....

Lets just say i read it somewhere already...i read so many sites...i couldn't even begin to remember where...although i saw it yesturday..i would imagine he is freeing up space to get Flo back there covering his azz.

He is here for the long haul....it's common practice....they'll just load up the azz end of his deal...how do you think the Skins are gonna go from 20+ over the cap to under it, and still pick up a free agent here and there....

no no no

restructuring salaries doens make the player take less, it usually jsut moves the $ around, often they get more. say take $2mm off this year but add $2 to next year and $1mm a year further out, or guarantee some bonus that was optional...

Actually

when you re-work contracts the player usually does take a loss. Like you said it gets pushed back to the end of the deal. Well, very few players last 6 years when they are already in their prime. If they did push it back to the back end, then Romo would be taking up WAY to much CAP room in a few years. I am not saying that they would release him when his contract gets too high, they would then restructure it again and Romo might never see that huge portion at the end of his contract.

The reason I said he is pressured is because it doesn't really look good to your fans when you won't re-work your deal to make the team better.

Romo is getting his money

Because he's got guaranteed money(i think it was 32 mil guaranteed...)

That's why players make such a big deal

About guaranteed money these days.

They know with the salary cap the chance of seeing the end of a long contract is slim at best.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small.

The amount under the cap

This is a good site:

http://www.askthecommish.com/salaryc...

According to them we were 16.8mil under before the Hamlin tag. So the team should be around 12 mil under now. If we re-sign Canty, we could leave Barber tendered at a 1st and 3rd (though I'd rather get him locked up, he's probably safe from other teams at that cost)

I think we still have enough to go after a backup QB and a WR (I'm rooting for Bryant Johnson, but I've heard DJ Hackett is a possibility) But other than that I don't see splashy FA signings this off-season.

This is making the assumption the Flozell gets a long term deal that the Cowboys can't match.

Thanks, wasn't too sure on that.

Seen different numbers on different sites.

I know, it's confusing.

Plus unless you have inside knowledge of the Cowboys exact cap workings, it's just a guesstimate.

I never understand how the Skins are perpetually over the cap, yet manage to sign plenty of FA's every off-season.

we don't need any free agents

if we can re-sign all of our all guys. Plus we have 2 first rd picks. We just sent 13 players to the pro bowl, we're loaded with talent, so long as that talent doesn't leave.

In Romo we Trust

I disagree terry

I think its great
we can get rid of an underachieving ayodele
and his cap money
and we get an absolute tackling machine

but this story isn't over
look for another deal pre-draft
