Rosenhaus keeping cowboys busy!

Has super agent drew Rosenhaus been spending alot of time talking with the cowboys?

http://www.kffl.com/team/14/nfl

According to KFFL.com rosenhaus reports that after working out Zach thomas' deal with Dallas he's been in negotiations with dallas regarding MBIII and Contract extension for TO

Star-divide

I think this is great news that the boys are talking extensions with Two of our best offensive threats. Hopefully we can getr extensions for both of these guys!

I think its a huge mistake

to extend T.O at this point, he still has a year left on his contract, take a wait and see approach, same with Barber, he'll be locked up for one more year since he's tendered at a first and a third, if he proves his worth next year as a lead back, which I highly doubt, then sign him later in the season, I dont think the cowboys should be in a rush to sign these guy to extended contracts. Jerry made that mistake already with Williams.

its not a mistake, its very smart

T.O. will remain the best WR in the league for at 2 or 3 more years and he's proved to be very happy and a team player when he's paid well knowing the team wants him.

Its all about making this man happy and Jerry has been brilliant in doing that. I'd make the exact same deal with him that he did back in 2006.

TO has a huge cap number

Extending his with a big signing bonus and low base salary could free up cap space to go after some of our other targets.

philly gave T.O. a big signing bonus

where did that get them, nothing but a headache...

And it keeps his cap number big

I think TO has proven he has turned the proverbial emotional corner. He is not as a big of a risk as he was when we first signed him. He could go to any of 31 other teams now when we were the only ones willing to give him a second chance 2 years ago.

by Impatient on Feb 23, 2008 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

because he's a big risk

dont get suckerd into his recent good boy act, he's thirty four, you dont tie up big money in an aging receiver, and his agent isn't going to accept roster bonuses every year, he'll want upfront money only, and he's shown, once he gets that, his attitude changes. We're going to be eating terry Glenn's money this year because I doubt he'll be back, aging players get injured anf their production drops off drasticaly. New Engand doesn't tie up big money in aging players, they move on and thats why they're winning every year.

Randy Moss?

You know he'll be re-signed.

TO's gotta know he's past the point where he can shoot for a long term deal. I think he'll take the same kind of deal he signed 2 years ago. A series of one year deals camouflaged in an apparent 3 year deal.

Sure, but why must it be done now

why is it such a big deal to ge tit done now, if he wants to stray here, then Jerry would be smart to wait until atleast thanksgiving to sign him to a two year extension, but I wouldn't give him anymore than that. He wont get a better deal from any other team after next year, he'll be thirty five and other teams would only sign him to a base/incentive laden deal then.

I was under the impression

that re-doing TO's contract was to free up more room under the cap, and secure him for a few more seasons.

I might be one of those "sucked", but I went from being a TO basher, to believing he really likes his relationship with the Cowboys, especial Jerry Jones and Tony Romo.

well said Tom.....get a grip man''..

He is restructuring NOW so WE can Sign Flo, MBII, and Canty....can't you read between the lines ????????????????????

That's what TEAM players do...Romo will be restructuring his deal soon as well...you gonna give that a hard time ?

TO would command more money than Randy Moss right now, he's 35 and in better shape than anyone in the league. Base/incentive laden deal ???..

yeah Base salary of 7,000,000 and a bonus of 3,000,000...........whew...count 10mm against the cap each year

...not the way to do it....just ask Arizona how they're doing with Fitzgerald right now.

I'm not sure if Romo can re-structure yet

NFL players are only allowed to re-structure their contracts once in a calendar year. Since Romo just signed in the fall, he probably isn't allowed to re-structure yet.

Section 9. Renegotiations and Extensions:
(a) Provided that all Salary Cap requirements are met, Player Contracts for current and future years may be renegotiated and/or extended except as follows:
(i) The contract of a Veteran Player may not be renegotiated to increase the Salary to be paid to the player during the original terms of the contract for a period of twelve months after the player’s most recent contract renegotiation. But the base salary can decrease?

We know from recent court and master decisions that bonuses are not salary. So more bonus and less salary might qualify which is what usually happens in a restructure.

by lee3022 on Feb 24, 2008 4:07 AM CST up reply actions

Agree thats normally the case

The Team will restructure to give more bonus to reduce base salary.

For brevity sake I didn't include all of the subsections under "Section 9. Renegotiations and Extensions:" Here's an additional subsection.
(e) An amendment to a Player Contract that changes the terms under which Signing Bonus is paid is a renegotiation.

Also, I have found 3 different definitions of "salary" in the CBA.  Different sections have their own qualifiers as to what constitutes "salary".  For Team Salary (for purposes of CAP calculations) and top 5 and top 10 players salaries (for calculation of Franchise Tags) bonus proration counts as "salary".

P.S. Haven't seen you post in a while.  Hope your doing well.

by DeRat on Feb 25, 2008 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, lets go the same route as the Skins

rework contracts every year, push the money down the road, and end up 23 million over the cap at years end, like the Skins...

Hmm, what other team had 23 million of dead money on their cap, oh yeah, the Dallas cowboys of the late ninties, the Jerry Jones 5-11 run dallas cowboys, restructure contracts every year, thats a winning formula...NOT!!

at the end of this year...

Possible contracts that will be off our '09 roster:

R Williams-cut- savings over 5,000,000
J Ferguson-cut- savings over 4,000,000
T Glenn-cut-    savings over 5,000,000
A Ayodele-traded or cut- savings over 4,000,000
A Henry-traded or cut-   savings over 5,000,000
B Johnson-cut-           savings over 2,000,000

possibly:
Carpenter-traded or playing or cut-
Spears-traded or playing or cut-

possible savings- over 5,000,000

Total possible savings after this season:

$$$$$$ 30,000,000 $$$$$$

With prorated bonuses being spread over '09 & '10 or...all bonuses in '09- no more than $ 10,000,000 combined. Would give us nearly 20,000,000 freed up cap space to do anything Jerry wants to do ......

That is the reason this has to be done now..so we can sign MBIII & Canty...This would leave TO as our only player over thirty, and all our key components locked into cap friendly contracts....unlike all the crap contracts list above.

We are looking to get rid of crap contracts...

'09 Free Agents:
Newman- franchised, reduced salary, or free agent
Columbo- signed or free agent

and ??..

'10 Free Agent:
Ware...signed to multi million dollar contract...

Yeah, rather than model the NE method...

... do we want to venture down Snyder way and go the route of the Skins?!?!

I would hate to see our Beloved Cowboys slide through that downward spiral and venture into salary cap hell again.

Deke's points are valid.

MB3, Canty are issues for this season.

Newman and Ware will be next season's issues.

The Patriots have been the most successful team of this decade for a number of reasons... and one of them includes how they plan and manage their personnel and cap issues.

The King needs to pattern our model after them.

When was the last time we won a playoff game again?

sorry silver...but you two gotta gewt wid it...

focus on one year ????????????????

Can someone here please help me with this ??? Tom, Grizz, anybody...

We are in the process of offering an extention to Terrell Owens...by far and away the most integral part of our pursuit to win a Super Bowl...

By doing this negotiation now, it would negate and eliminate his current '08 cap hit from 7 million dollars, to a more cap friendly extention where the bonus can be adjusted over the length of the extention...thus making THIS '08 cap hit substantially lower than the current 7 million dollar hit...AND it would free up current money to furnish offers to Canty and MBII..and possibly Flo...

What in the world is so darn hard to understand about this ???

Do you people actually think this is TO's last year here ???...hell no..He'll be here at least 2-3 more years. I assure you he will be in attendance when Jerry opens his up his 1.1 billion dollar stadium in '09.

Do you people think we have a snowballs chance in hell of ever winning a Super Bowl WITHOUT Terrell Owens ???

If we don't sign TO to an extention I can assure you, we are going to be maybe the 2nd, or 3rd best team in our DIVISION...if we're lucky...

He is what makes this offense work...period...or do you wanna try Crayton and Hurd as our starting WR's....LMFAO
