Flozell Not Returning?

Forgive me if the title of this may have scared any of you, but I have been wondering about whether the Zach Tomas signing is a tip off that the Cowboys have already decided against re-signing Flozell.

Friday, I read an article by Nick Eatman here.

In it, he talks about how the team really only has enough money to sign Barber, Hamlin, Canty and Adams.  The remaining cap space will go to sign the rookies and possibly one or two low cost signings of need.

I don't see Thomas as a need on this team.  While he is a great player, his size and his age really make this more of a luxury rather than a need.  As has been pointed out by many of you, our needs are CB, WR, RB (in no particular order).

I'm not salary cap expert, so someone please set me strait if I'm wrong, but I'm just wondering if this signing indicates that the Jerry has already made up his mind that Flozell is not coming back.  Why else would you sign Thomas to a 2-3 million dollar deal when you have so many other positions of need and so little money left to do it after re-signing our free agents?

I can only try to help...

This appears to be a simple subtraction of cap space by the addition of another ??..if that makes any sense...

Of course I can't contend I know for sure what Ayodele's cap figures are in '08, or the remainder of his lengthy contract, or that I know the exact terms of Zack Thomas's deal just recently worked out....but I can try to figure it out.

Going by Ayodele's 2007 Cap Figure: $3,405,640

Zack Thomas is believed to have a multi-year contract,(1 year/with option for 2nd, and playing time incentives) unlike which is reported to be only a 1 year deal.
And don't hold me to it...but it very well may be that they can spread the 1 million signing bonus over that two year period ?..once again..I am not sure..But if that's the case, his 1 million base salary, plus 500,000 signing bonus would make his 2008 cap cost $1,500,000, or if his entire bonus goes to this season, it would be $2,000,000 for this upcoming season. There is a performance bonus as well, but that won't kick in until he reaches that level, or at the end of the year, not sure.... Either way:

The Cowboys I would think, are either trading Ayodele or releasing him, without a doubt.

example : Akin Ayodele :  $3,405,640
           Zack Thomas : -$2,000,000
                       -------------
                          $1,405,640

or if bonus is split:  $1,905,640

I am uncertain, but if Dallas was to release or trade Ayodele, I believe they would take a cap hit of approx. 1.4 million for the remainder of his bonus money...that being the case, this basically would wipe away clean Ayodele's remaining contract, which ran through the 2010 season.

Not a bad way at all of gaining a cap friendly performer that will be much less against this years cap, but it relieves us of a commitment to an underperforming, overpaid NFL LB that has been mediocre at best..

And it possibly gives the kids (Carp & Burnett) an opportunity to finally see some action in relief of new starter Zack Thomas.

Nice write-up, Boyz.

I'm still holding out hope that we can get something for Ayodele, he's not a bad player. But if nobody steps up with an offer, he will almost certainly be released.

I realize it's just a rumor...

but the mystery trade to Atlanta for Hall surely looks like a doable trade, and as reported, Jerry has been in contact with Hall's agent to work out extention parameters...ya never know......and their new HC knows Akin very well as his former coach, and i can assume covets a known commodity in Ayodele...and LB is a serious need position for Atlanta.

But i imagine the other 12+ teams vying for Hall have some packages in the works as well.

I believe Likely to be Earned Incentiives

count against the cap in the year likely to be earned. As reported, Zack's incentives are relatively easy for him to earn.

Regarding Adams

I don't know that we should just assume Adams is gone because we signed Zach Thomas to a contract.  Stephen Jones is the best in the NFL at managing the Cap and I heard yesterday that Romo may even re-structure his deal to help keep Adams around.  I can't imagine that Flo isn't a main priority for us.  He has to be.

I don't think that romo can

Restructure yet,you can only restructure a contract after 12 months.I believe thats what the CBA says.

I think he can

My understanding was that you can't restructure for more money until after at least 12 months, but if the player is willing to take a pay cut it can be done at any time.

I don't know about some of these figures but

I found this at foxsports:
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/teamSal...

2007 Salaries
Rk Player Salary (US$)
1 Roy Williams $11,688,850
2 Terrell Owens $10,001,100
3 Leonard Davis $9,319,000
4 Bradie James $8,754,840
5 DeMarcus Ware $7,514,840
6 Jason Witten $6,504,840
7 Akin Ayodele $5,604,840
8 Kyle Kosier $5,604,840
9 Flozell Adams $5,004,840
10 Marcus Spears $4,991,900

But I do know that Akin Ayodele should in no way be in the top 10 moneymakers on our roster. neither should RW,or spears or kosier(who according to this list made more than flo)

I'm also not real sure that brady james is worth 8.7 mil per year.

Do any of you guys have a list of what the cap hit is for each player?
everytime I look I find a different figures.

it's so damn confusing...for sure....but...

I heard the Romo rumors as well....but as duely noted by DeRat...it can't be restructured now ?...They may be putting it together to occur mid season ?..who knows..but as far as that above list...we need to chop, and chop hard :

2007 Salaries
Rk Player Salary (US$)
1 Roy Williams $11,688,850- cut and take cap hit.
2 Terrell Owens $10,001,100-restructure long term
3 Leonard Davis $9,319,000- restructure long term
4 Bradie James $8,754,840 - restructure long term
5 DeMarcus Ware $7,514,840- big extention '09
6 Jason Witten $6,504,840 - fair value.
7 Akin Ayodele $5,604,840 - trade or gone '08-'09
8 Kyle Kosier $5,604,840  - gone '09
9 Flozell Adams $5,004,840- ?????
10 Marcus Spears $4,991,900- trade or extend '09

those numbers are off from many other charts i've seen though.
