Tatum Bell a Cowboy?
ESPN.com has reported that Dallas native -- and current unrestricted free agent running back -- Tatum Bell has spoken to Cowboys reps regarding possible interest to join the club.
I stumbled across this on Matt Mosley's "Hashmarks" blog.
Here's the "kicker" paragraph:
Colleague Matt Mosley is driving right now and can't type. But he just called me with a tip from one of his Cowboys sources. Dallas suddenly is showing interest in running back Tatum Bell.

I wouldn't mind signing a veteran running back
if the money is right.

Hmm...
Lemme think about this one.

He's fast
But does struggle to stay healthy and he used to have fumbling issues (I only say used to because I haven't seen if he still does)
I like him because he's an OSU alum and he'd be cheap.

lol..full circle...
After the highly profiled blunder of not taking Steven Jackson in the first, One of my favorites to be selected later were Michael Turner & Tatum Bell....coming out of college as the fastest RB available,(ran sub 4.40 40) and on the radar of the Cowboys during the draft, he got picked up by Denver, leading to selection of Ju Jones....He had fumbling problems coming out of college, and was still relatively raw, alas Jamall Charles of this years draft......not sure if these problems still persist....but I was pretty high on him then...He reminds me of a poor man's DMac, or better yet, a rich man's Tyson Thompson....so.....knowing we need 3 RB's on the roster...I am inclined to be all for picking up this vet at a very reasonable cost to us...
1)Barber
2)F Jones
3)T Bell
sure would look good to me in '08.

Charles
is more of a power back than Bell, though thats not saying much. I think I wouldn't want to give up any draft pick for him, not even a seventh. If we picked him up without giving up anything then we would probably be overpaying for a #3 back or another JUJO.

Sir
I will have to respectfully say, hell no.

lol....good boy...do you even know him ?
and better yet, what, or who do you propose we get to back up MBIII ? ...enlighten me young man.

Well
I think it's pretty obvious around here that it's more like I want someone to backup Dmac. If that happens, then, a bruiser, someone like Duckett. Hopefully, there is no injury situation with him. But, even if not him, I think it's pretty easy to find a backup RB.

dream on, DMac ain't happening around here

if you don't have anything of substance
to add when you reply to me, then please do 3 things. 1. think. 2. think harder. 3. just don't reply.
thank you.

that's my line..lol
I agree

only if DMac drops like a rock into the teens
because we certainly don't have enough cap room to draft in the top ten this year.
by Terry on Mar 1, 2008 9:02 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
So it IS possible?
I mean, doesn't DMAC have skinny legs, fall at first contact, and deserve to play WR? If you can see it, I'm sure pro-level scouts have noticed. I'm surprised you don't think he'll be available at pick 22 or even 28.
Food for thought.

that doesn't worry me at all because I never said
D Mac sucks, only that he's overrated and isn't worth trading up into the top 10. Now if he falls like a brick into our laps at #22, I think he would be a great change of pace back to MB3, absolutely.
Now of course I'd rather have Mendenhall or Stewart, but if D Mac falls to #22, then its almost a certainty Mendenhall and Stewart will be selected ahead of him.
I'd love to have D Mac at #22, I just don't think he's worth trading up for, thats been my argument all along to fans who think he's a franchise, feature back. I don't think he can tote the rock every game 20-25 carries and be effective.
IMO, there are only 2 franchise feature backs in this draft, Mendenhall and Stewart.

I agree with that
100% Terry
Nobody has ever stated that DMAC isn't talented.
But he does have issues which may turn out to be glaring weaknesses as he tries to compete on the pro level.
If he drops I'd gladly take him, and get to work with a strength and conditioning coach to try and bulk up those legs, give him some power to move piles ,all without losing his speed. BUt I doubt he'll drop though.

Tatum Bell
might as well be named JJ. I'll pass. He would be another RB that can't get out of his own way. Would be a horrible sign. Save the doe for someone else.
by Cowboys81 on Feb 29, 2008 10:42 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
keep in mind we need somebody to share
the load with MB3 and if we sign Bell, then it takes the pressure off of us to take a back in rd 1.
by Terry on Feb 29, 2008 3:48 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I was thinkin' the same exact thing, Terry.
And it would still help that it's a RB-deep draft.
by kcbrett5 on Feb 29, 2008 3:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yep
We can always pick up a back in the later rounds to compete for the 2nd string spot.
If this happens I would like to take the best CB at the #22 spot, and trade our other 1st rounder for more picks this year and next.
by ChrisRichey on Feb 29, 2008 3:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I like that plan, Chris
That would give us ammo for next year's draft too while saving us from having to pay two first rounders.
Man, I hope we draft a quality CB...
by kcbrett5 on Feb 29, 2008 4:00 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
exactly Terry...
and Bell could be had for less than a million/per.
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 29, 2008 3:54 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
If that's the price, seems decent
He could be a good guy to give a 1 year contract to. The guy has speed, if nothing else.
by grapejoos on Feb 29, 2008 4:24 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Even if we sign Bell
I'd still like us to make a play at Felix Jones or someone in the first round. We are losing two of three RB's this year and this draft has too many good ones to pass up.

+1
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 29, 2008 5:04 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Doesn't do
much good to draft them...if we can't afford to sign them.
we're really tight on the salary cap
by TrueBlue24 on Feb 29, 2008 5:07 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes but
do you really think JJ's splash offseason at RB consists of signing Bell? He must have some tricks up his sleeve or else the botox has gone to his brain.
by Billito on Feb 29, 2008 7:21 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
probably
a conbination of the two KING...LOL
no really I fully expect some surprises...
by TrueBlue24 on Feb 29, 2008 8:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
regardless we'll have 3 RB's on our roster...
by BoyzRback07 on Feb 29, 2008 8:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah
thats a given
