49ers part ways with Jackson
San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - The San Francisco 49ers waived veteran wide receiver Darrell Jackson on Saturday.
"I always had a great deal of respect for Darrell as a player in the NFL," said San Francisco head coach Mike Nolan. "I appreciated his dedication and work ethic during his season with the 49ers. He always had a positive attitude every day he came to work. While we are going in a different direction, I know he can still produce and be an asset to an NFL team this year."
Jackson was acquired in a draft day trade with Seattle last April and started 15 games in 2007, catching 46 passes for 497 yards with three touchdowns. The veteran has recorded 487 catches for 6,942 yards with 50 touchdowns and three 1,000-yard seasons over eight NFL campaigns.
Obviously, this is big news, as DJax was once a big name. And we all know how much Double J likes big names.
With a competent QB, I think Jackson could return to the form he was at only two years ago. You can't blame a guy for not thriving in San Francisco, which has become a receiver's wasteland since Owens left.
The question is ... does Dallas try to add Jackson?
The upside: he's very talented, he has several years of consistent productivity, and he'll give opposing DCs nightmares when they attempt to gameplan for Owens, Witten and DJax in the passing attack.
The downside: he's 29 years old and has a long history of injury problems. He had an awful year in 2007. He's likely going to be expensive.
I'm guessing this will be a nice piece of rumor mill fodder for the next few days before he signs elsewhere. My guess? Washington. He's old, aging, and a big name. That's everything the Deadskins stand for. Besides, WAS is the home of new head coach Jim Zorn (snicker), who has plenty of experience with DJax, as they were both with Seattle for the better part of a decade.
Thoughts?

hmm...
The downside: he's 29 years old and has a long history of injury problems. He had an awful year in 2007. He's likely going to be expensive.
Coming off injury problems and having a bad year, could he really command that much money? Of course, Javon Walker immediately comes to mind, so yeah, Jackson would be expensive. Stupid FA market.
Honestly, if the price were right, we should at least consider it. At 29, he's not that old.

In fact, he would come
cheap, but he would be a bad fit. I'll pass.

I hate the fact that we don't know what...
...we can expect from Glenn this season. If we think Glenn can come back and play this year, then we really can't pursue options like D-Jax.
With that said, D-Jax is obviously not the same player he was. Why else would Seattle trade what was (when healthy) their #1 WR for a 4th Round Draft Pick to their emerging division rival? That trade didn't make much sense a year ago, but maybe now it does.

I'm with you on Glenn,,,
It would really help to know if he'll be able to play or not. The last few games of 2007 didn't tell us much. Maybe we should trade him to Miami and focus on the future???

DJax doesn't have the juice we're looking for
we need a WR that can fly to comlement T.O., Witten and Crayton, not a possession WR with a history of injuries and drops.

He's not that far removed from...
a pretty good 2006 season.
13 games he had 10 TD's and averaged over 15 yards a catch. He's been a big play receiver in the past (when healthy).
He was due to make about $4MM this season....which probably had a lot to do with him being released.

+1
He's on the downside of his career. Also, he would do better in the West Coast offense according to the experts.
The are likely to be WR's available after the June 1st cuts that will be roughly similar in skills, and cheap, if the Cowboys go that way.
I think Javon Walker was the guy Jerry had his eye on, but not for the amount of money he eventually signed for. The WR's market is really overblown.
