DJ Hackett
Looks like Hackett has officially spurned the advancements of ole' Danny Boy in Washington. Hackett signed with the Panthers today. I always like seeing a rival of ours miss out on a player they desperately need.
The one thing I don't really get is that Hackett stated he wanted to play for a contender and I could see the Deadskins being considered as such and to some extent the Bucs, being defending NFC South Champs, but the Panthers? I just don't see how that makes sense, I guess it really was all about the money.

Makes sense
The Deadskins play in the toughest division, arguably, in the NFL. Whereas the Panthers have an easier road to get to the playoffs through the South.
Plus the coaching turnover in Washington may have worked against them.

Well
the Panthers are a contender as long as Delhomme's healthy. They were 2-1 last season before he got hurt.
But I agree with Tom that the NFC South is much easier. The Falcons are rebuilding, the Bucs will be when their old players run out of gas, and the Saints have a variety of issues.

Grizz do you know anything about the SB Nation
format changing? My friend from hogshaven was saying something about it. Maybe you could help clearify. Thanks!

Re:
Everyone wants to be on a contender, but everyone also wants to get paid. ESPN is reporting that the Redskins offered Hackett a minimum contract, and the Panthers didn't; he scored a 3.5M deal over two years, which surpasses a minimum contract. No need to read too deeply into his motivation for Carolina over Washington, as it's right there in green.
Hail to the REDSKINS. <-- you guys keep misspelling it for some crazy reason.</p>

Yeah, Hackett probably...
... used the Skins and his connection to Zorn as a bargaining tool to get other teams like Carolina to up their offer.
Practically everyone lies to get a bigger contract (free agents during silly season) or an edge on their opponent (head coaches regarding player injuries).
Seems to be the nature of da beast in pro sports.
Sad, but true.

Kudos to him for gaming the system.
The more desirable a player the more he would ostensibly be compensated. Nothing wrong with playing teams off of one another.
Based on our spending history, I think it behooves every player to spend a little time in Washington to drive up costs for other teams. I don't even mind the Redskins participating in this charade so long as they don't overspend for players. It never hurts under a finite salary cap to force opponents to pay more for their players. I was very pleased the Redskins stuck with their original offer, even if I wanted Hackett on the team.
