Pacman Jones to Dallas Cowboys rumors picking up steam

OK, we heard from BTB-regular sprite earlier today about the Pacman Jones to Dallas rumor. The guys on the Ticket were discussing it as a fait accompli. Apparently, that came from this link to a Rototimes.com piece. Hat tip to Dave Troll for the link. Well, it turns out it’s not that far along, but there is now confirmation that talks are taking placing.
Timmy Mac gives this report on the DMN blog.
A source confirmed to Calvin Watkins that the Cowboys are discussing a trade with the Tennessee Titans that would grant Pacman Jones his wish of coming to Dallas.
Nothing is imminent. The Cowboys and Titans have discussed a late-round pick as the compensation.
This thing sounds more and more like it might actually happen.

Look at it this way guys
The cowboys are a strong team with a family type atmosphere. Pacman is not going to mess that up. Look at Moss last year with the Pats. I understand that Moss and Pacman aren't the same type of situation but the point is, a strong team can overcome the individual. Here is what D-Ware had to say about it on the DMN blog -
"The way I feel if they bring in Tank or DeAngelo Hall or whoever, they understand what's at stake. They understand how many guys are really working. Like Tank was saying when he came here, 'I've never seen as many guys working out at the same time and have the same drive in off-season workouts.' Certain teams, I don't know how they do their deal, but here all the linebackers are going to work out together, that gets us a little closer niche. All the linebackers, all the defensive linemen, you're going to learn each other and talk to each other ... I think if you've got 10 guys against yourself, what else are you going to do? You're not going to be an outcast.
This is one of our team leaders letting anyone who comes to the cowboys know that they are expected to behave like a Dallas cowboys and if they can't do, they will not last. This is literally Pacman's last chance and if starts screwing around, we cut him and move on, no harm, no foul.

Exactly
And there is no more powerful motivator for guys in his situations than saying "this is your last chance to save your career." I think this will work out, and even if it doesn't, it's worth the risk for a low pick and small contract.

The fan in me says
wow, imagine him in the secondary along with T-New and Henry. Heady stuff.
The human side of me (which I guess makes my fan side inhuman. I'll post more on this later I guess. Or talk to my shrink) thinks he's a rotten guy and I wonder what tragic things lie in store for some Dallas-based stripper or or bouncer innocent bystander.
I know that J. Jones will do all the right things - strict contract terms for behavior, etc. I just don't put Pacman in the category as Owens or even Tank. They had issues but never hurt anyone. This guy is another kind of cat entirely...

but my fan side is so rabid for a playoff win and some postseason success that he is drowing out everyone else. Pacman has the chance to be the ultimate success story if he can just make some big plays on the field and keep quiet off the field, he will be treated like a hero. Maybe that sucks but my fan side says "Bring us a ring, we won't remember a thing."

There is nothing better than having a guy come in that wants to fit in, wants to win, and WANTS to be a Dallas Cowboy...This guy will be on his best behavior...I truely believe this. He KNOWS he has one more shot to turn his LIFE around...Give the man a chance...This would be the biggest signing, and have the same impact to our team that Charles Haley or Deion Sanders had to our team over a decade ago...And neither guy was considered a chior boy coming in....Give the man some love...

However, he has been arrested six times and has been at or near a dozen police investigations since being drafted by the Titans with the sixth pick overall in the 2005 draft.
Most recently, Jones used an Alford plea to settle a felony obstruction of an officer charge in Fayette County, Ga., stemming from a 2006 arrest he failed to report to the Titans or the NFL.
He also settled a case from last year in Las Vegas in December by pleading to a gross misdemeanor of conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct, after originally being charged with two counts of felony coercion there after a strip club fight escalated into a triple-shooting in the parking lot of the Minxx Gentleman’s Club.

I see him as less risky than TO
from a team standpoint - TO got in a locker room fight and verbal jawing with teammates I don't think pac-man has done that.
But I am left wondering how in the world do you get arrested 6 times in two years?

Does everyone else see whats coming?
Picture this, if this comes true. Jerry will now be able to make a big jump for McFadden. He could use one of the #1 picks or both and if Pacman does behave, we will cover all our holes except for WR. Or do you think he will trade one of the #1 picks and next year's pick?
Any other scenario out there?

You have a point there Dave....
The odds of trying to trade up to aquire DMac would greatly increase...As I do not believe Jerry wants to pay MBIII 7+ million a year...which I know Rosenhaus is commanding.
If I was Jerry...I'd stay focused with the same exact plan of signing a CB first, RB next....
I'd trade up and STILL get DRC....We NEED two top CB's regardless..Pacman & DRC would be a huge upgrade...And we need assurance in case of injury to Newman or Henry...Plus the possibility of not being able to resign Newman, or the eventual release of Henry.
It's not known if Pac would take over for Henry./..or just be the 3rd CB, and punt returner..DRC could come in on dime packages, or even be groomed to play FSafety in Hamlin goes onsigned., also share kick return duties, gunner on kick teams...
Plus you must cover yourself just in case Pacman does go rogue on us.I don't think he will.....But I can only dream for now of having Pacman & DRC as our starting CB's here over the nexy 8-10 years.

I'm not sure
Jones let a lot of guys go because there are some major paydays coming up - guys like Newman, Canty and Ware will be wallet busters. Why break the bank and lose draft picks for an unknown quantity when you have Pro Bowlers on the roster who are "must keeps"? I am not sure he's ready for the $30 mil price tag for a guy who could turn out to be Reggie Bush.
I think what it would mean is that they could take a WR and RB in the first round, and shoot for back-up corners after that. Right now I would think the plan is CB first, followed by "best available" for the next.

He can't destroy this locker room. We just lost a guy who's been shot thrice, let's replace him with a guy who just hangs out at strip clubs. Okay, he does seem to get in trouble there, but that's Vegas. Everybody gets into trouble there! They'll watch him good in Big D!

like any other player we take a chance on... IF we get him at a reasonable price and give him a chance WHY not....?????
we have taken many players that 'grew up' when they were with us..
Pacman is a talent that we won't find for a 5th or 6th round pick.... so why not.. IF that is the cost
if he messes up, ship him out... if he behaves.. a la TO, Terry Glenn, etc.. we hit the jackpot...
it's all risk / reward... and his reward could be well worth the risk IF Jerry and Stephen are smart...

I am just asking,
but what if he does get into some trouble and the Cowboys are in the middle of a great run for the Playoffs/Super Bowl. He gets suspended or even banished during this run and because the Cowboys don't have anyone trusty enough as backups and we lose out to a Super Bowl, is that worth it?
I will say, if he does behave then it is worth it. But this guy has been in trouble even in college! Is he going to automatically pull a good switch?
Personally, I would rather take a risk on some of these rookies than a someone that keeps getting suspended and can't even be good while in suspension.

The key is
that we have to proceed as if we didn't acquire him until he proves he can be truly reliable (which will probably never really happen). Meaning, we still need to draft a CB high (true for additional reasons), and we still need to have a quality 3-man unit without him. It may mean less reps for the rookie, which isn't good, but it will at least give us a quality backup and someone to groom as a future 2nd/3rd CB.
What would be a huge mistake is what I'm fearing: get Pacman on the cheap, put all of the eggs in the DMac basket, Pacman pulls a Pacman, and all of a sudden things don't look so good.

i don't think corner is #1 on the draft list, RB shoud be first.. but maybe getting Pac moves corner from 2ed to 3rd priority.... moving WR to 2ed..
so we have but we might not have as good because we took the risk..

JJ isn't stupid, he knows he'll have to ensure we have quality depth if Pac was to do something stupid. Chances are Pacman will get a smaller salary than a 1st round rookie will be getting if we sign him anyway. Not to mention he's already NFL ready. If anything it will give the rook more grooming time in practice to become more prepared if such a thing were to happen.
Make it an incentive based contract and voi-la, a peaceful Pac! That or a severed Pac, never to be seen in the NFL again, Oh well.
I see absolutely no problem with this if it were to occur assuming we do it correctly.

Structuring contract right = Low Risk/High Reward
That is, assuming Jerry doesn't decide the secondary is set and blow his load for a McFadden or someone of that nature in the draft...
This team will still need a CB in the first round or two of the draft.

Perhaps a year off cooled his jets...
NO sure though. Its still a bit risky to sign him from a PR prespective but the first punt he returns or INT he returns for 6 will calm the nerves of the Cowboy frenzy.
I would prefer NOT to have him, but I also preferred not to have TO and look what that has brought the Cowboys.
If the trade and salary are minimal then I am all for taking the risk but as soon as we hear one peep from the local strip club, I want him gone!

I'm all for it
I've maintained it from start that a veteran or a player already on this team will be the new nickel CB, not a rookie. It appears that's the direction were heading. I have no doubt we will draft a CB, but he will not be drafted as a starter this season. We need an immediate impact starter with experience which is why a veteran makes the most sense this year.

If we signed PacMan
The CB we drafted, Ball or Oglesby will not be the nickel CB.
We would have Newman and PacMan on the outside and when we went to the nickel Newman would switch to the slot like always and have Henry and PacMan on the outside.

PacMan to Cowboys=Moss to Pats
Pac Man is a premium player at a premium position. Because of his severe character issues, he's available on the open market. Just as Moss-at-a-discount allowed the Pats offense to upgrage big, Pac Man allows our pass defense and return game to upgrade big for less than the market would normally charge for such upgrades.
The "team killer" thing with him is overrated...I actually think TO was more of a risk (because of age and coach-clashing). I'd way rather have a guy with thuggish off the field issues who is fine with coaches and teammates than someone who is nice off the field (as TO apparently is) but clashes with coaches and teammates.
TO worked out well, I think Pac Man will work out well. We now have the best CB tandem in the league, the ability to perhaps move Henry to safety, and the ability to draft some impact backups at RB, WR, and CB.
