Cromartie, DeSean Jackson, Chris Johnson, Flowers and Rice
I think way too much about the draft, and every year I ponder away until I come up with my ideal scenario. Its finally clicked into place for '08. If all goes well, we'll get the following:
1a. Dominique Rogers-Cromartie CB, Tenn St
1b. DeSean Jackson WR, Cal
- Chris Johnson RB, E. Carolina
- Brandon Flowers CB, Virginia Tech
- Ray Rice RB, Rutgers or Mike Hart RB, Michigan
Why should you care who I want? I think an average joe can pick pretty well because you benefit from "less is more". I think the scouts and front office people can get so deep into the players that they can't see the proverbial forest anymore. If you read several different scouting reports, you get enough of a variety to pick pretty well (except the late picks). And believe me, I've wasted a lot of company time reading scouting reports and watching youtube highlights.
My belief is you look at positions that are deep in the draft and let the laws of supply and demand give you the best bang for your picks. Luckily, CB and RB are deep this year, WR not so much. That's why I'm doubling up at both CB and RB. We have two spots open for each on the roster and this draft looks to be a good one to fill them.
Dominique Cromartie - You watch this guy at the combine, and he looks like a future stud. And he matches his talent with playmaking (check the Senior Bowl clip on nfl.com). My worry is that he'll be long gone by 22. Hopefully some bs pops up in the next month or so about him smoking pot or something so that he slips. My only worry is that on the few plays I've seen from his college days that he doesn't look as fast as I would've thought. But he looked plenty fast at the Senior Bowl and Combine so I'm not too worried. I'd be willing to trade into the late teens for this guy. Stay away from Talib, he looks like future toast.
DeSean Jackson - While this isn't a good draft for WRs, I think Jackson's small size might make him slip to where he's a good value late in the 1st. We have good size receivers, but if Glenn can't go, we don't have the quick guy who can get deep. Jackson looks like a Santana Moss to me, and would immediately step in as our punt returner and possibly slot guy. He'd be a great compliment to our young and physical group of Crayton, Hurd and Stanback. His size doesn't worry me too much because he won't play full-time, so he'll have some time to bulk up, and he's quick enough that I don't think he'll take many direct hits.
Chris Johnson - Patience should be the key tenet when picking a RB this year. There seem to be a lot of guys that fit as a complimentary quick guy/possible returner, so we shouldn't reach. F. Jones, C. Johnson, J. Charles, R. Rice, M. Hart, J. Forsett and S. Slaton all fit the bill. Of those I favor Johnson, Rice and Hart. Speed is vastly overrated for a RB, as Julius and Reggie Bush have proven (so why am I picking the fastest guy?...read on). What I look for in a college player is production and the ability to break tackles. The NFL is too fast to just run around guys. Speed helps getting a guy to only be able to arm tackle, but you need to be able to break those (exhibit A, Julius Jones). The key I look for in scouting reports is the ability to run inside or break tackles. F. Jones and J. Charles both have been flagged for lacking that (as has McFadden). Speed is a nice bonus when you have the other ingredients already. Watch little guys like Tomlinson and Westbrook, and you'll see that they often break a key tackle early in a run before getting to show off their wheels. Chris Johnson had great production, can break tackles, and has the bonus of amazing speed. He would also slide in as our kick returner from day 1. Hopefully he drop to the end of round 2.
Brandon Flowers - I'm a Hokie Alum, so this might be a homer pick, but I've watched this guy for several years and he can play. His 4.6 40 will make him slide further than people think. Remember D. Hughes last year from Cal and how far he slid after clocking a slow 40. This guy covers like a blanket, is a solid tackler, and will make the occasional big play. He covered as well or better than DeAngelo Hall did during his days as a Hokie. While is 40 wasn't great, he's plenty quick, and at the least would be a solid nickel guy.
Ray Rice or Mike Hart - Go to youtube and type in Ray Rice. This guy is like a mini Marion. He's thick and runs with surprising power. While he has a lot of mileage, that shouldn't be an issue as a complimentary guy. He has excellent vision and cutting ability.
Mike Hart would be an ok fallback option. I don't care about his 4.6 speed, I'm impressed with his production in big games. I wasn't overly impressed with the videos I watched, but if he slips to the 5th or 6th he'd be a great gamble. I do remember one highlight I saw where he made a cut in the hole that was simply jaw dropping. Plus he's a great character guy.
Sorry to ramble on so long. I stopped blogging when I realized how much work it is, but I still need to occasionally scratch the Cowboys writing itch. Nobody I know personally would actually care about all I've just said. Luckily we have a sanctuary for over-obsessed Cowboys fans.

+1
And I can't fault him for it; WRs have an immense bust factor. However, there's something to be said for drafting what you need in a class as deep as this one.
I'd be elated with Flowers in the second round, much less the third. A guy that reliable doesn't often slide that far. I know Mayock had him as his #1 DB not too long ago.

yeah I agree
were not picking a first round WR, especially when this draft class is so weak. Jackson is not a first round pick.

We may have to trade UP...
...if we want to get Cromartie. He's rising to the top REAL fast. He may even go top 10. Top 15 for sure. Keep an eye on Andre Caldwell from FL in the 2nd. Another guy I like is Lavelle Hawkins from CAL. Caldwell is particular is impressive, he's bigger and ran a sub-4.4 at the combine. He's look good with a star on his helmet.

nice piece..
i like that u brought up ray rice.. ray went to HS about 20 miles from wher i did and i've seen and heard some pretty crazy things involving him on a football field. i like desean jackson (also of youtube fame) but if he didnt bulk up.. and just by chance DID take a solid hit. hes a small dude for the NFL.. leave it at that. great piece tho

Thanks for the review
I'm pulling for CB first, but Jerry mentioned a "wow" factor for the offense, which I'm beginning just now to dread...
by dunkman on Mar 9, 2008 10:16 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
seems like
the only "WOW" factor left is DMAC doesn't it.. That scares me a little to think about.

maybe his WOW is....
Pacman jones....
As in "WOW...what an idiot"

I don't know why
But I have this gut feeling about Ray Rice. I think he's the next Jones-Drew. He has good vision, he's patient waiting for a hole to develop and he blows through it and follows blocks. With his short frame he's able to stay low and make nice quick cuts.
by sublimezg on Mar 9, 2008 10:20 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
the kid rice got skills
n that seems like a legit comparison.. he very well could end up being a the same type of player jones-drew is.. imagine that

hes got a website that the people at Rutgers made for his early heisman candicacy before the '07 season.. check it out

Say no to Ray Rice.
I've seen a ton of Rutgers games. I live in the area and see him live and on TV. He is a good player no doubt, but the knock on him is he will have a very short NFL career. He got beat up at Rutgers and durabilty (5'9 190 lbs)is a concern. We need a speed guy with some size, that's not Ray Rice. He is a 2nd or 3rd round pick.
Felix Jones is the more logical choice as the days go by. He was on Serius Radio today and said Dallas expressed alot of interest in him at the combine. Tampa Bay was the other team. A first round CB seems unlikely and we aren't trading up to get one either. Looks like we will grab one in the second round or the 28th pick. Flowers or King would be my guess, but at the 28th pick that might be a reach so trading down could be an option.

I disagree Cowboys81...
I truly believe in this guy, and think the knock about his durability is garbage.
He will be a VERY good back in the NFL, and will have as long a career as he takes care of his body. Which, knowing Ray, he will!
I've been touting this guy all season and offseason as Marion's replacement.
He would have run a 4.3 at the combine had he not tripped at the start. He IS a speed guy.
Remember, I know another short running back almost the same size as Ray, who was told he'd never last in the league...and he became the greatest of all time!

Rice is not a NFL starter
he would be a good change of pace RB, but won't be able to take the beating if he had to start. Felix Jones is the logical choice right now because he would add the speed dimension we need to compliment MB3. He would add to the return game also.
Emmitt was about 20 lbs heavier than Rice and built alot stronger in the lower body.
by Cowboys81 on Mar 10, 2008 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not true at all...
Ray is 5'9, 205lbs.
Emmitt was 5'10 and 212lbs.
Also, I'm not bringing him in as a starter...I'm bringing him in as a change of pace to MB3. Also, another back they said the same things about was Tiki Barber.
I think people put WAY too much on size, etc. I'll take what the guy has done on the level he's been on. His stats are what I'm judging him on. In three (3) years, he has over 5,000 yards!

He also ran the ball ovewr 900 times...
way too much wear on those tires...

And see I see it as...
Having the experience to know where to go and when to go there.
I'm not a big believer in limiting young players now a days like everyone.
If you can run you can run...to me it doesn't matter how many times you do it. Run until you can't run anymore.

I like Ray Rice as well
I think Dallas would have to take him with their 2nd round pick.
Rice has great balance, and can get through the hole quickly. He is good at setting up his blocks and can pick up blitz assignments. Smart kid with talent.

I admire the time and effort....but...
1a. Dominique Rogers-Cromartie CB, Tenn St
I'll just come out and say we have no chance what so ever of obtaining DRC at pick #22....He is by far our biggest NEED player, and would instantly become our best pass defender, opposite T Newman. With the luxury of two first rounders, I'd trade both to get this guy.
Unless you plan on trading up into the top 10...you can forget this guy...
1b. DeSean Jackson WR, Cal
Unlike others guys on this site, I would LOVE this pick, and to top it off, however slight, there is a very good chance he may fall to #28. If he does, I wouldn't hesitate to pick up one of the premier college punt returner in college history. He also is an exceptional receiver, with great hands, and body control. I liken him to Marvin Harrison, and he does poccess the quickness to elude big hits. I wouldn't care if he ran out of bounds, or drops to the ground with on coming defenders....cuz more than likely, he'll already be 25 yards down the field...This is by far the most electrifying player in the draft.
2.Chris Johnson RB, E. Carolina
If we don't get a RB in the first, I would LOVE this pic as well. I do not see him falling to #61 though.....If we address our CB and WR needs in round one, we'd probably have to trade up a bit in the 2nd to secure this guy. If Charles is still available there...I'd prefer him.
3.Brandon Flowers CB, Virginia Tech
I'm not sold on this guy, but I'm pretty sure other people are, so I have no doubt he won't be around with our #92nd pick in round three. Sure he may turn out to be the next Ty Law, but if we don't grab him in round two, I'm not worried.
4.Ray Rice RB, Rutgers or Mike Hart RB, Michigan
If we don't grab a RB by round 3....Jerry should be shot. If Ray Rice is available in round 4, there's no doubt we'd be looking at him...Sorry, but Hart is more than likely sliding down to the 5th-6th round area...I love the guy's character, it's his snail pace that won't cut it in the NFL.

I'm not hung up on any particular player
because honestly I know less about most of these guys than a lot of people on this site. We all know that in some order Dallas needs CB, RB and WR and probably more than one.
I just hope that the patience they've shown in free agency carries over to the draft. As good as Dmac may be, not one draft expert I've read has said that he has great coverage skills and more than anything last year, that tanked the Cowboys' ability to advance in the playoffs.
by dunkman on Mar 9, 2008 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agree with you Boyz
on everything, except Jackson, but we've already argued about that. I would be very tempted if we had the opportunity to trade our top two picks into a pick around #10 where we could get McKelvin or DRC. I also think that if we don't get a RB in the first that I would be hard pressed no to go J.Charles but I wouldn't mind Chris Johnson as well. I would liken Flowers to an Anthony Henry type.

well....we'll see about Jackson..
The fact is Desean Jackson has been working out exclusively with none other than Jerry Rice this past 3 weeks....And Jerry Rice sez he's going to be a phenominal playmaker at the NFL level, You tend to take his crtique seriously....You listen to any Pac-10 coach, any west coast scout, any opposing player that ever faced him...you'll realize maybe their right...
So if you wish to argue the ability of Jackson, and the impact he'll have on this league...you might want to take it up with Jerry Rice....THe best receiver of all time... :-)~

Got his number?
What is the difference between him and Ted Ginn. Jr. from last year?
by Romo9 on Mar 9, 2008 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ginn
Is totally clueless when it comes to route-running. He flies straight on every play. Jackson can run the curls, fades, and of course top it off with as good a streak as anyone. He probably doesn't quite have Ginn's all-out speed, but he's more elusive. That's part of what makes him so good as a returner, although I think the Hester comps are premature.

Well, I don't really agree with this though...as Jacksons 4.31 40 speed eclipses times of Ginn's...but your right...he's much more athletic and elusive.

Mayocks top CB
unless he changed it recently. He is high on him.

Like I said he was his #1 guy
at one time, but Flowers is the most likely choice for us at this point and you can add King in that group. All the others will be gone by the 22nd pick. Unless were moving up, which I think is highly unlikely were drafting a CB in the second round this year.
by Cowboys81 on Mar 9, 2008 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
King is not a 1st round talent
Any team that takes him in the 1st is reaching badly.
McKelvin
DRC
Jenkins
Talib
Cason
Flowers (maybe)
There are the likely 1st round CB's.
You can lump King in with the 2nd to 3rd round talent.

I would puke.

Right
And Cason is an iffy first rounder. He's in the same class as Reggie Smith IMO, and Smith would make more sense because of his duality. (He can also play safety)

Jets?? they just drafted Revis last season
no way they go CB 2 years in a row. Pats don't want to pay top 10 money, I say they trade out.

I'd like Ray Rice too
Another guy is Kevin Smith - I thought he might be a small school, one year wonder but he appears to be good between the tackles as seen in this video.
These guys could be good bargains depending on where they are taken and could be every down type of backs if they block well. I'd take a chance on Hart for a late second day pick.
