'08 Draft Strategy

What positions should the cowboys improve upon with the two first round picks?

Star-divide

The way I, and most other cowboys fans, see it, there are three "needs" that should be addressed in this years drafts.  With two first round picks we have the flexibility to address at least two of those needs with quality players who hopefully will be able to come in and make an immediate impact.  My question is which of those three positions should be addressed with the two first round picks?  I tend to agree with those that say we should draft a cornerback and a running back in the first round.  I feel like this draft class at WR does not have a large number of players that can come in and make an immediate impact.  Don't get me wrong, I think there is a good amount of talent at WR I just feel that players such as Devin Thomas, Early Doucet, or Lavelle Hawkins are players that will have to be brought along over time.  Just wanted to see what the rest of you guys thought.  That and I am extremely bored and can't wait for the draft.

This is the way I hope it works out. . .

Atlanta does not draft Ryan at QB in the first round.  Talib falls to us at 22.  We trade 28 to Atlanta so they can draft Brohm ahead of Miami and we get their first two second round picks to draft James Hardy and Chris Johnson.

Or. . .Talib at 22, Felix Jones at 28 and get someone like Eddie Royal or Jordy Nelson with our second round pick.

I would...

be ecstatic with this outcome.

Especially after the recent news

I am not as much into Talib.  An isolated incident is not too big of a deal but the closer the draft gets, the more dirt is uncovered on this guy.  I would love Cason at 22, trade 28 to detroit for R. williams and get the best RB left in the second round.

Okay, I am climbing up on my soap box now.

WE NEED DESEAN JACKSON.....BAD!!!

This is the only guy receiver who can help us now, and be a cornerstone for the future.

Other people see Ted Ginn Jr. I see Marvin Harrison minus the diving on the turf after the catch.

This is the best return man in the draft. This is one of the best route runners in the draft, he has the best hands in the draft. He is a GAME CHANGER.

If he does nothing more than line up outside in our 3-wide sets, and return kicks and punts, it will be a huge lift.

How huge would an occasional punt return TD be?
How dangerous would it be to shade coverage to T.O. ?
How much better would Crayton be in the slot in 3 wide?

There it is, I said it, I am in love, I dont care if he's 169 pounds,(Harrison is 165) if he gains 5 hes Santana Moss, if he gains 15 he's Steve Smith.

WE NEED DESEAN JACKSON.

LOL..+1 ......I'm all for it Glory...

He would my pick as well if we go WR.....

Day 1 selections:

#22 DeSean Jackson-WR
#28 Felix Jones-RB
#61 Tracy Porter-CB

Instant speed injection to our team...

Yeah

Now that I could live with. Now having Jackson and Jones on the field at the same time does make me lean toward Jones a bit more.

And lined up next to eachother on kickoff returns.

Best hands in the draft?

Best route runner in the draft?
Look, I like Jackson. But you're going overboard in your praise. He's fast, agile, elusive. An excellent return man. But don't add elements to his game that aren't yet there.

he's a great route runner, with good hands...

there is no questioning that part of his game either...He's a top 15 talent, and if he "slips" to #22....there is no question he'd be considered. I also liken him to Marvin Harrison, only faster, and the best return man in the draft.

For one thing

Harrison is listed at 185 pounds, not 165, thats a pretty big difference Glory. Also, I don't see the toughness that makes Harrison so great in Jackson, from the wording of some of you guys he will be everything Marvin was, only faster.

Oh, and Boyz thats another future hall of famer you compared to in this class. I think you're up to four so far:
Felix-Dorsett
Jackson-Harrison
DRC-Deion Sanders
Gholston-L.T. (kinda)

Any more?

by Romo9 on Apr 10, 2008 10:31 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah.....and in 10 years....

your going to reflect on my words of wisdom and realize...that Boyz dude sure knew what he was talking about....lol...

seriously...you wait and see....I've seldom been wrong in my 25 years of projecting talent.

In fact...those 4 mentioned will be the top at their positions from this years class...

Cool

didn't mean to come off rudely if I did BTW. I tend to agree with you as well on Gholston and DRC being future stars in this league.

by Romo9 on Apr 10, 2008 11:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Forget what Harrison is listed at...

When they had that show with the obstacle course on ESPN (I cant remember the name) and the players all got on the scale he was 165!

And by the way Marvin Harrison and toughness dont belong in the same sentence. I have never seen a receiver outside of Torry Holt quicker to look for a nice soft spot in the grass as soon as he makes the catch.

There are times when Harrison makes a catch and ducks down, and then realizes no one is around and has to get going all over again.

What about Eddie Royal at the end of the 2nd?

He's as fast as Jackson, went to a good school and is bigger in size.  Same player, but less risk money and pick-wise.  My view is that if we are using a first on a receiver we should trade for a proven player.  I'm all for the scenario above regarding Roy Williams at 28, but it doesn't look like the Lions are in any hurry to trade him (even after Jerry mentioned he might be interested in trading).

Same thing with Felix Jones.  Yes, he's great, but unless he is going to carry the load, we can get a comparable back in Chris Johnson, pay less money, and pick up some extra picks by trading down.

by Valainferno on Apr 10, 2008 5:37 PM CDT reply actions

I believe

that's the same reasoning Stephen and Jerry are using. I would be surprised if they drafted a WR first because his impact can take as long as 3 seasons to realize. RBs can contribute immediately, and even CB will see the field.

Not saying a WR like Jackson would be a good or bad pick, just not convinced that's what this management group is thinking.

by dunkman on Apr 10, 2008 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I like Royal too.

If we wait until round 2, that's the next guy I'd like to see.

Starting to sway to drafting out of first round..

With Both picks...I've read where most teams are ranking picks #31 through #61 as the best value picks in the draft....Meaning...If we can trade #22 to Atlanta for 2 of their 3 2nd rounders, and trade #28 to say Miami who also have 2 2nd rounders....Both teams will be jockying for first dibs at Brohm, Flacco, or Henne.....before the likes of Balt, Chicago, Carolina, etc...It may be wishful thinking but,

I'd love to have 5 2nd rounders...between #31 and #61:

2a) Jamaal Charles-RB Texas
2b) Jerod Mayo-ILB Tennessee
2c) Andre Caldwell-WR Florida
2d) Tracy Porter-CB Indiana
2e) Tyrell Johnson-SS Arkansas St.

  1.  Red Bryant-NT- Texas
  1.  Mike McGlynn-OG Pittsburgh
  1.  Kevin O'Connell-QB San Diego St.
  1.  Peyton Hillis-FB Arkansas
  1.  Chauncey Washington-RB USC

Cleaning house there!

by goodjobtimmyheresabluestar (46717) on Apr 10, 2008 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

we need a house cleaning....

Charles RB2
Mayo ILB4
Caldwell WR3
Porter CB3
Johnson SS2
Bryant NT2
McGlynn OG3
O'Connell QB3
Hillis FB2
Washington RB3

If our draft went like this..I bet all 10 would make the roster.

15 days can't get here soon enough....
This is the most anticipated draft since the early 90's drafts....This draft will the splurge of talent that will take us into the next decade...I only hope we hit on several picks of need...

This will be very interesting indeed.

I wouldn't mind that

but I would strongly advise taking another corner. We can't put all our eggs in one basket in Porter.

by Romo9 on Apr 10, 2008 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

.but this was purely a stipulation mock....

I don't exactly know what we'd get if we traded down both our top picks...but it's beginning to entice me...figuring we want the likes of:

All can possibly go 2nd round:

Cason-cb,Talib-cb,Smith-cb,Porter,cb,Godfrey-cb,King-cb,Thomas-cb,

Jones-rb,Charles-rb,Johnson-rb,Forte-rb,Rice-rb,Smith-rb

Caldwell-wr,Manningham-wr,Doucet-wr,Bennett-wr,Avery-wr,Royal-wr,Hardy-wr

IF we were able to get 4 2nd rounders for our 2 1st rounders...we can conceivably grab 2 RB's and 2 CB's....and a WR....hahaha...howz that for taking care of business..

2a)Felix Jones-RB
2b)Matt Forte-RB
2c)Antoine Cason-CB
2d)Justin King-CB
2e)Eddie Royal-WR
3)SS
4)NT
5)FB
6)DE
7)QB

Be creative.....
