Prospects we aren't talking about
I know we have been very fixed on our three areas of need - CB, RB and WR and perhaps in that order based on value and the draft picks ability to contribute immediately, but I wanted to through out some players that we aren't talking about that might be available when we are on the board (provided that the wheeling and dealing Jerry Jones stays where we are today).
At 22 - we've speculated about DRC, Mike Jenkins and Talib. We've hoped for Stewart to fall and discussed having another RB named Jones. Limas Sweed and DeSean are the two WRs most commonly mentioned as 1st round targets. But if you can never have enough pass rushers or D-Linemen for a 3-4, how about sticking to our recent history and drafting a DE that could transition to an OLB to ensure depth for when Ellis is finished like Phillip Merling or the beefier Calais Campbell as a 3-4 DE to ensure depth/replacement for the exit of Spears.
At 28 - rather than picking for need, what would you do if the Boyz go after Jerod Mayo as an ILB or Reggie Smith to play safety.
While I doubt that we'll seen any of the above players as Cowboys, there is room outside of the 1st round for several 'surprises' based on who might still be on the board.
In the second, we aren't talking about DT Pat Sims, OT Sam Baker, OG CHilo Rachal or S DeJuan Morgan.
In the third, Eddie Royal has been discussed, but what about a Steve Slaton, Jamaal Charles or WR William Franklin out of Missouri.
Of course. . .there are always the 'Sleeper' candidates that are small school prospects or not as visibile on over-talented teams. Players like the speedy WR from Coastal Carolina Jerome Simpson or Dexter Jackson from App State. . .or what about a 3rd QB like Josh Johnson in the later rounds. . .
While I've been overly focused on the additions of a top rated CB, trading for a WR like Roy Williams, watching Jonathon Stewart drop to us at 22 or picking up Felix Jones at 28, adding an Adam Jones under an appropriate contract that makes him low risk/high reward. . .the bottom line is that every year they draft isn't as sexy as I want it to be. When Jacob Rogers in your first pick, the future Bavaro is your second pick the year when you have a Pro-bowl TE, you watch as the Boyz trade back to get a Julius Jones that wasn't on anyone's radar screen when Steven Jackson was available, or you draft yet another DE transitioning to an OLB for the third year in a row. . .all were surprises to say the least. And less than sexy. . .
So, look around a bit. What else is there that we should be considering?

ANOTHER OLB?
We've drafted them three goshdarn years in a row now. We're better stocked at that position than any team has a right to be. Excuse the outburst, but I don't get the fascination with an accumulation of players at one position.
As for Mayo, interesting. He's the new hot name, flying up everyone's draft boards and being whispered in many ears. We're probably OK at ILB as well, though; James, Thomas, and Ayodele give us one heck of a grouping, Burnet and Carpenter can back up with the odd man out of the earlier triad. There's nothing really missing there.
Sims, Rachal, and Morgan are interesting names. Slaton is one of my personal faves, and I can't understand why people continue to deride him; he fell back last seson, but there was no way he could maintain the production of 2006. He's a good runner and a capable receiver who has lined up at wideout in the past.
As far as surprises, I don't think Jerry's as content with the safety position as some would speculate he has to be. If an offer arrives for Roy, I could definitely see JJ giving up his much-lambasted strong safety and drafting a replacement in day one.

And you were expecting an OLB last year too?

Mayo can also play ILB as well
and that position is more of a need considering Carp is a bust.
I'd be into Mayo....but he's not what we need
I couldn't see us using a 1st rounder on him with much more glaring needs...I'd love to have him though.....but it would take a 1st rounder...and we better not use another 1st rounder on LB...period..
Ware , James, Burnett, and Spencer are our starters for the next several years, after Ellis and Thomas move on.....We need to develope depth behind them...Not 1st round replacements though....
If Beau Bell is still around in the 3rd or 4th....I'd be all for it, as he has much ability, and a punishing LB...Ayodele is as good as gone, Zack Thomas has maybe a year or two left in him.......and Carp will never ever start here...
Captain Caveman belongs elsewhere...send him to Miami for a kiddie sand pale and a shovel.
If we went this whole draft without addressing ILB..I wouldn't be concerned...A pass rushing OLB in the mid to late rounds would be worthy...

ILB is a need?
James and Ayodele are the returning starters, we've signed Zach Thomas who presumably competes with Ayodele and Burnett for a starting role and then Carpentar is the 5th inside backer. . .Outside LB has three quality players (Ware, Ellis and a little known Spencer) and a bunch of guys. If we draft a LB, I'd presume it was outside although I doubt it will be early in either instance. Maybe if Gholston drops to 22 for some reason. ;)

in the 52 man roster. . .
Where do you get the other player so that you can carry 9 LBs? What are you leaving on the table?

Cap hit?
by goodjobtimmyheresabluestar (46717) on Apr 13, 2008 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions
yes...we can't cut Carp...tooo much cap hit......
but....He will be traded in the '09 draft for anything we can get for da bum...His cap is much less next year...like 1.4 million.....see ya Captain Caveboy...

I can't wait. . .
Until we start the season so we can stop speculating about who's a bum and who isn't. For that matter - why is Spencer not a bust? He was virtually invisible last year. . .
I think Carpentar is an injury to someone in front of him away from showing what he can bring.

Half the season?
4 games. . .and then virtually disappeared.
by JerrodWheeler on Apr 13, 2008 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions
Didn't disappear...
He did play later in the season just not as many reps once Ellis got healthy. If he was a bust the coaches wouldn't have been trying to find ways to have Ware, Ellis and Spencer on the field at the same time.
Spencer was fine.
I think everyone within the organization is very happy with his performance. He was exemplary during Ellis' injury and played quite well during his very limited time as a backup. He didn't get many reps, but give him opportunities and he will capitalize. Trading us that selection is a move the Iggles are going to regret for a long time.

I'm not labeling him as a bust. . .

More time for evaluation
We've barely seen what last year's class can do, but if there was one standout, it'd be Spencer.

I stand corrected

Carp isn't going anywhere
Akin ayodele won't make it to training camp though...
Z.Thomas took his spot away already,he'll be traded, maybe even a draft day deal.
I know that BoyzRBack has been accused
of playing in too many fantasy leagues. . .but I believe you have been suggesting all along that we can't trade for a WR like Roy Williams/A Boldin because we were tight against the cap. Now you are advocating for cutting a former 1st round pick that is a key contributer on special teams even if he hasn't broken into a consistent role in the base defense. . .hmmmmmmmm.
Perhaps we're all fantasy GMs working without a salary cap.

Wait one minute here slick...............
First off....fantasy league games ??....I'm thinking I know more than you...In fact...I know I do...Nothing I've proposed is mere fatasy or out of the realm of possibility...so get your facts straight before you go posting my name umprovoked....
First...If your going to make light of any quote of MINE....you better be able to trace it down...cuz...
I HAVE NEVER EVER SAID I WAS OPPOSED TO TRADING FOR A HIGH PROFILE WR BECAUSE WE'RE TIGHT AGAINST THE CAP...IN FACT...I'm a huge PROPONENT of making such a trade...Chad Johnson, Anquan Boldin, Roy Williams....bring 'em on....
BTW...I'd cut Carpenter right now and take a 3.5 million cap hit, just to get that BUM off my squad.... He's like tits on a bull...worthless....Thank god Tuna is frying down in Miami...

I think Ayodele gets traded during the draft
But I don't see a need to replace him with another ILB. James and Thomas are the starters, Burnett and Carp are the backups. I could see them taking a DE/OLB type player if they don't like what they have behind Ware, Ellis, and Spencer. It would have to be a guy who can excel on ST.

I'd like Temple as the third running back...
My sleeper pick
Is Paul Smith QB, Tulsa in the 7th round.
Living in T-Town, did U get to see him play, Tom?
If so, what do you like about him?
What don't you like?
Give us your take.
